John Bercow speaks to Iain Dale after inquiry brands him a serial bully | LBC

  • Ex-Commons speaker John Bercow has told LBC he "absolutely denies" claims he bullied his colleagues, insisting he is a "warm, empathetic, principled and passionate person".
    Speaking to Iain Dale on LBC, Mr Bercow said he had "fantastic" relations with most of his colleagues after a damning report found he is a "serial bully" who should have been "expelled" if he was still an MP.
    The damning conclusions were upheld by an Independent Expert Panel following an investigation by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.
    It has been recommended he should lose his parliamentary pass - and Labour has reportedly suspended him. Although he was a Tory before becoming speaker, he announced he had joined Sir Keir Starmer's party last year.

      Because Labour holds their most of their MP’s accountable much more often than the Conservatives. Conservatives will continue to lie, bully and break the rules and get away with it because they aren’t held accountable by the press or the opposition. However if Labour are caught doing anything it’s a full on attack even if it’s not even true.

I guess the rationale behind this, is that any evidence in support of older cases is often considered unreliable because of the passage of time. So why then does this rationale not apply to Bercow's case? The other thing is the timing of the rule change, it comes across as a bit suspicious, don't you think? There is an awful lot of smoke, if, as Bercow claims, there is no sign of a fire.

    Bercow says here that he was repeatedly re elected to his seat whilst Speaker, as a Buckingham Voter would point out that this is factually incorrect, as Speaker no one from the recognised Parties stood against him, therefore he got a free pass, which many still get annoyed about, effectively we residents didn't get a valid vote for more than 10 years, this in a so called Democracy....

    • @euanparker2534
      @euanparker2534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      He was referring to his re-election as speaker, this is a vote that occurs amongst members of the Houses of Parliament. I absolutely agree with you that the lack of representation of the speaker's constituency is one of the greatest flaws in our democratic system but Bercow wasn't suggesting his mandate as speaker came from his constituents.

    • @holdontoyourwig
      @holdontoyourwig 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The general public don't elect the speaker.
      It's wasn't Mr Bercow's fault that no one stood against him. Surely if people thought he was doing a bad job a candidate would have been put forward.....but it never happened.

      @@euanparker2534 His mandate as a speaker comes from the house. He has to give the house an opportunity to overturn the government. It is his choice as to what and when.
      As he presided over a hung parliament, the opportunity arose on many occasions. That's why Lindsey is silent 80 majority no chance.

    Im not a fan of Bercow, and as the speaker of the house his judgement was sum what suspect! I cant Boothroyd would of allowed what went on during the Brexit debates. However he made points where he was cleared of bullying only for the panel to set aside the finding and find him guilty without any further evidence, being found... All rather shoddy to be honest. A judge would of thrown it out!
