I find it especially weird given that they already allowed Stan to say "I thought you were playing Spin the Bottle with Soos!" which seems worse to me, I guess they thought that at a party with teenagers spin the bottle could lead to worse?
TBH, Almost every episode of Gravity Falls deserves its own dark toons review XD

Specially the inconveniencing episode it was real funny and really dark one of my fav episodes it was where the kids go to a haunted convenience store and mable gets high on out of date smile dip which was also banned too
What makes Dipper and Mabel's dynamic unique is that while Dipper thinks with his head, Mabel thinks with her Heart

I still love how "Not S&P approved" made it onto the summerween poster just out of spite for the censors.
Considering all the BS Hirsch had to put up with, god it really makes you appreciate everything they DID get away with in this show. Especially lines like "I ate a man alive tonight." and "Ohhhh Ford, I got the kids...I think I'm gonna KILL one of them now just for the heck of it." Oh and how about that moment where Bill just TAKES A DOE'S TEETH OUT OF HER MOUTH just because, or gives Dipper a head of Khal Drogo then TAKES IT APART PIECE BY PIECE showing skin and flesh and bone...Then there was Bill Cipher's monster form, the Summerween episode as a whole...Northwest Mansion Noir where like you know, BLOOD OOZES OUT OF THE STUFFED MOUNTED HEADS ON THE WALL, totally kid friendly content.
Thank you Alex Hirsch, for not backing down where you could, and giving us a show that people will remember and watch for YEARS to come. And yes, I did grow up with this show, in the sense that I wasn't a KID watching it, but I was there watching it as it came out. I really don't think I ever saw a fandom BREAK in half as badly as the GF fandom did over "Not What he Seems". I think the only time I saw a fandom SO evenly split before that was ATLA but that was over shipping, not theories. Not over moral dilemma's characters had to face. Not over actual content that could be dissected in fun ways vs just a lot of yelling (god the ATLA ship wars were BAD).
It was AMAZING to witness firsthand. And MY GOD did Alex just feed into that chaos. Incredible. I almost feel bad for people who just get to watch this show all in one sitting; I think part of the fun of GF was experiencing that journey with these characters. Figuring the phrases out, wondering what Cipher was up to...if you binge it all in one or two sittings, I really think that affects that fun mystery element. And it's why I don't mind that Disney+ has shows release every week. It reminds me of back when I had cable. And sometimes...the wait is more than worth it.

Yeah I'm so glad I was able to catch this show while it was coming out, even if it was just after Not What He Seems, the wait between episodes was such a big part of the show because of all the theories, fan art and secrets that people would make in between.
@@00ammy00 That hiatus SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED lol. I mean sure I had enough content to last thanks to the fandom but OH MY GOD it was the worst. Meanwhile like I said Hirsch was just kinda feeding into the chaos in fun little ways that made the fandom lose its mind EVEN MORE lol. That shot of Mabel lifting her hands up with "I trust you" became a STAPLE of GF fanart.

There’s something about moonlight forests with giant, thick trees that’s really hits that Halloween feel for me.
Add a little resting fog and boom, it’s perfect.
World of Warcraft had some nice forests like that :)

Gravity Falls has to be in my top 3 shows period. I didn't discover it until my mid 20s and man did I miss out. Pretty sure I loved every episode of the show from start to finish.
I wouldn't put higher in my top 3 favorite shows. It's in my top 10 for sure, but I can't top other animated shows like Batman the animated series and Avatar the last airbender.
This monster became an instant favourite because of how tailor made to kids he felt. He really sounded like something only a kid would make up and be scared of. The design and casual violence it allows is awesome.

You should do one of Northwest Mansion Mystery. Even by the standard of Gravity Falls that episode went some... interesting places. Gravity Falls in general really walked the line between being a comedy and basically kid friendly horror show, so it's good material for a show like this.

You could honestly do an entire Dark Toons miniseries about this show. This episode's actually probably the tamest compared to, say, Dipper watching a duplicate of himself get cryogenically frozen whilst screaming in agony, a bunch of taxidermied animals bleeding fom the eyes and mouth as they recite a demonic chant, or Bill literally dropping lines like "I'VE GOT SOME CHILDREN I NEED TO MAKE INTO _CORPSES!"_
Yes. Disney let him say that in the same show where they didn't let Soos dress up like a bear for fear of him looking like a furry.

I love Gordie as a one-off character from this episode,as hegets twoshort, yet amazing lines. "Remember me!" and, "I've been twaumatized." Plus the smile on his face as he deliveres his last line? Perfect. I vote Gordie for Mayor of Gravity Falls once he's old enough. And they should make that second line of his the campaign slogan, or put on the Welcome to Gravity Falls sign, "I've been traumatized!" 8D
First of all, Walker White is the greatest thing I have ever heard
Second, Candlejack could get reviewed for this series even though it’s not that dark. Just food for thought
Third, Gordy’s lines make me laugh just thinking about them, which is a clear sign that the writing for this show was top of the line
Lastly, if you’re doing more Gravity Falls episodes, I have to ask that Northwest Mansion Mystery get discussed

My Dad didn’t really watch Gravity Falls much with me and my brothers. But one day we asked him to watch this episode with us and he Loved it ! He never really watched the rest of the show but he loved this episode and we watched it almost every year after . He loved the Halloween Trickster monster 😂
Summerween was one of my favorite episodes from Gravity Falls. This episode was as Dark as the Jimmy Neutron episode “Sleepless in Retroville”. That episode would be good to cover on Dark Toons.
I still think you should do the hospital episode of Steven Universe where Connie's Mom takes Roses sword. The visuals in the hospital are great.

Does Mystery Incorporated count as a kid show? If so then I recommend the episode "Night Terrors". Personally I think it's the creepiest of all the episodes.

You should do one on Invader Zim, "Zim Eats Waffles" it's a deliberately benal and uneventful episode but they still found a way to work in a kid with a giant spike sticking through his brain.
Honestly Gravity Falls is a great series to do a dark room episode for. I recon there is a few episodes of Owl house that would be good for a dark toons as well like Grom Fright, the Intruder or even Thanks to Them which is set during Halloween.
Soos has a lot of funny lines in the show but "I ate a man alive tonight" is probably my favourite 😆

The episode The Eds Are Coming is also a good Dark Toons choice, what with the the psychological terror experienced by that one kid, Jimmy I think, and the overrall sinister vibes, and the pay off is most definitely worth it

The fact that it’s unknown how the candy monster is alive adds another scary element; a new one could/ and will eventually emerge in the following summerweens, as long as people keep throwing out the loser candy.

Right after my friend introduced me to Spirited Away, I introduced her to Gravity Falls with this episode. And she liked it so much that when we finished it, she wanted to go back to the first episode and watch the whole thing.
One of the normal looking faces Doug mentions happens to be Matt Braly, who after Gravity Falls went on to create Amphibia, another top tier show from Disney Channel! Just wanted to mention that, This is one of my all time favorite Gravity Falls episodes and an instant watch every Halloween.
And i'm not sure if i'm right with this one, but another face happens to be Dana Terrace, who went on to create The Owl House, another S tier Disney Channel series!
I'm honestly surprised you haven't shown an episode from the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. One I think would be a good idea to review is the one where Billy delivers people to a space monster that eats their brains. One of my favorite episodes.

First episode I ever saw and I've been a avid fan ever since. My son even got eased into horror with this show .
Also I just wanted to say, thank you for this series, these videos you’ve been putting out since 2020 have given me a whole lot of inspiration for my own creativity, just by paying attention to details like backgrounds or going about behind the scenes facts or even simple relatable jokes have really made an impact on me as someone who loved watching dark toons as a kid.
Really influenced me and very excited for the next one!
This was my childhood favorite Halloween special truly a modern classic.

This episode was so much fun for me. I grew up loving and hating the Halloween episodes of TV shows, especially animated shows. But when I got older they were no longer scary, no more shivers down the spine, no more holding my breath and sitting at the edge of my seat. But this episode, this whole show, sent me straight back to my younger days. I was genuinely scared by this episode and I loved it so much.
I freaking love that show. Definitely one of the best episodes of a show that's almost all great episodes.
I was the perfect age for Gravity Falls when it came out (12) and this episode cracked me up. I was just starting to get curious about horror movies, but not quite brave enough to watch any so this episode was really good for me at the time.

Still one of my favorite jokes from the show was the party invitation that said, "Not S&P approved" because the writers weren't allowed to put spin the bottle on the paper.

Gravity Falls is such a gem
Since you're such a Gravity Falls fan, I highly recommend checking out Amphibia. Especially, the Halloween episode! You can tell that the people who worked on Gravity Falls work on this episode because the whole thing is told like one of their Anthology episodes; even down to their creepy title cards.
Honestly there's a handful if dark episodes in that show. Including the Halloween one.

The Mabel hate really surprised me when I found out about it. She's a child. She's very sincere and full of joy. It's not like she's just constantly complaining through the whole show. And at the end, her allegedly "selfish" desire is...to not have her 13 year old twin brother live in a different state than her. What a monster! :D

to sum it up a fair amount of people do find the other aspects of her personality annoying but the real problem is her "selfish desires" compelled her to do some morally questionable choices (particularly in season 2). It apparently rubbed people the wrong way in hindsight. Especially when compared to what Dipper has been doing since day one of the show.
I also think relatabilty plays a factor in why Dipper is the preferred twin over Mabel.
@@SnazzyjazzBro There was also how even Bill himself pointed out how Dipper constantly had to sacrifice his happiness for Mabel's sake with her never making the same sacrifices for him in "Sock Opera", and that's not even mentioning all the times she's mocked his interests or freaked out over him trying to find happiness separately from her (while she's perfectly fine doing the same to him)
The main issue is that it's pretty one-sided when Dipper doesn't mock her and Mabel makes almost no sacrifices for him yet comes out with everything she wants.
There’s a double standard, where Dipper’s ambitions either in relationships or otherwise usually end up being a lesson for him to learn, whereas Mabel does some selfish stuff and is rarely expected to account for it. Take Carpet Diem, the conflict that every body swap story seems to need comes from when Mabel organises a sleepover with her friends in the attic bedroom the twins share, but doesn’t tell Dipper so he has to sleep outside to get any peace and quiet. Mabel is never called out on this and when the body swap shenanigans conclude they’re back sharing the room.
Little Dipper is another one. When Dipper uncharacteristically is being a sore winner (which only happens so he has a lesson to learn) he gets hit with jokes about being just a tiny bit shorter than Mabel, and his plan to fix this results in the twins being small enough for Gideon to trap them in jar. Dipper apologises, Mabel doesn’t. This is one example of how his inferiority complex is fed by being consistently teased and bullied by Mabel and Stan.

Dark Toons is one of my favorite Channel Awesome shows because you can tell how passionate Doug is about this subject. I'm a cartoon nut myself and this shit stimulates the nerd cells in my brain
This episode didn't scare me, but I do love it. Such a great show and what a way to do a Halloween special. Major props to Hirsch for how fun this all was. It's certainly one of my favorite show and episodes

I was about 20 when I started watching this. Growing older with my younger brother watching this show with him. It was a nice series me and him could easily watch. I used to watch this show on repeat way too much. This episode is great but the scariest episode for me is still Northwest Mansion Mystery episode. Second season got much more dark and that episode in particular shocked me a lot. They got away with lot of stuff.

I do like that a big part of the twins characters is ones desire to grow up faster vs the other not wanting to grow up so fast.
Censorship is a nightmare when it comes to animated shows. But it really shows when the creators get, well, creative with what they can get away with.
I still remember watching this on TV, 10 years ago. Then the show went into hiatus and I didn't watch another episode until the whole series was available to stream.
The episode of the real ghostbusters with the bogey man. Gave me nightmares since I was at the right age…. The bogey man’s voice and the fact he was just basically a large head with small arms and hoof feet. Still gives chills to this day!

I love Gravity Falls, even to this day!
I am so worried that it'd be a gem lost to time. And I am so glad that the sheer quality of the few episodes we got STILL leaves an impression to this day.
And thank you for pointing out the good artwork of Gravity Falls too. The colors, the shading, the designs, the general feels... Each episode was never JUST an episode. It would always be like an artwork, trying to invoke specific emotions in the audience. :)
Doug, please do "Donald's Off Day" (terrifies me even today) and "Rock and Rule" (you use a still of Mok in the intro of "Freakshow Cinema").

You could literally make several episodes of this show into Dark Toons like Mystery Mansion.
There was one cartoon in specific that frightened me as a little kid. Technically it's a movie, but it is the story of the little tin soldier in Fantasia. The imagery from the sewer rats was pretty intense, plus the music amplified the drama and danger of the situation.
I would say that if I were a kid at the time it came out, Over the Garden Wall probably would have scared me too. Specifically, the chiming of the bell episode.
If any show can do Halloween perfectly, yet somehow not being Halloween, its Gravity Falls.
I love Gravity Falls. It was actually NC's "Top 11 Gravity Falls Episodes" that made me want to see it myself, and it's still one of my favorite Disney shows.
This was my favourite show growing up I remember watching this episode, my dad loved watching this show with me and my mom questioned how this got made as a kids show
I recently rewatched this episode last weekend and I couldn't stop laughing. Man, this show was great. This was last year Trick or Treating, but I had fun and made sure to go out with a bang.

Soos (please correct my spelling if I'm wrong) is my absolute favorite character, because he gets right to the edge of annoying or hateful and the has a moment that makes him gotdam hilarious!
Yeah, Soos is a pretty funny character. I was originally going to hate him at first, but he was a lot better than I thought. I'll never forget when he said "Butt Island" and I cringed.

I'm 47, but I really enjoyed Gravity Falls, one of the very few cartoons of this century I like.
If your open to older, or more obscure cartoon, my recommendation is Bottles from 1936. It’s a Happy Harmonies cartoon. It’s about a character called the Drugist who falls asleep in his story and has a nightmare where every product on the selves some to life, andsome try to kill him.
Not only one of my favourite shows, but along with Avatar Last Airbender, also a show I learned of through Doug here. So, thanks!

Already watched this episode twice just in the last two weeks. Love this episode and Gravity Falls.
I did not grow up with Gravity Falls. My first exposures to Gravity Falls was actually Weirdmaggedon, and a couple of the episodes leading up to it. I was hanging out with a now ex-girlfriend in high school, and we needed something to watch. She turned on Disney XD, and that was what was on. Fast-forward about two or three years later, and my family had gone through a big forced move. So I watching a lot of shows on Hulu to distract myself from how depressed I was at the time, and I recognized Gravity Falls as "hey, I watched this with her" and decided to watch it properly from the beginning.
After the breakup, that girl never wanted to talk to me ever again, and I haven't seen her since I graduated, but if I ever got the chance to see her again, I'd thank her. Without her, I would have never given Gravity Falls a chance, and amazingly written episodes of TV like this episode would have gone right under my radar.
I would love your thoughts for a Disneycember on The Owl House. The creator, Dana Terrace, is the showrunner who worked on Gravity Falls and she's also Alex Hirsch's life partner. Hirsch was also a creative consultant for the series and voices several characters. Dana was inspired by art and storybooks by Hieronymus Bosch and wanted to do a horror show for kids. Now Disney wouldn't let her get in too much horror for S1 but they eased up a lot for S2. It has two specials left next year, but I highly recomend it. Many of the creators from Gravity Falls also worked on Owl House. I will say the first season is a bit slow because they're world building. They also found out towards the end of the first season that Disney was shortening their run, so S2 tightens up a lot plot wise with the shorter timeframe
