    What are your mantras? Share the wealth!

    Those are some good mantras. On my first ultra, I used Keep moving, Keep eating! Probably not so useful for a sub 3 marathon 😅

      Cheers Mark! Ha, I dunno - with a slight modification it could work quite well I reckon with the latter stages in mind… keep pushing, keep fuelling. What d’ya reckon? 😅

    Nice one Nick - another great video.
    The mental thing is massive for me. I find myself dreading runs and races. I would certainly say that I do mentally prepare before races, but I have to work really hard to ensure it’s positive preparation.
    I agree, when you’ve done the training it’s good to keep telling yourself that fact - like you said “I’m fit, I’m strong” Trust the process and all that good stuff.
    When I’m in a run by myself I tend to find myself counting when it gets tough. I quite often count my breaths knowing 45 breaths is about a minute or, I just continually count to ten. It’s just another way of keeping me in the moment and not allowing myself to think about how far there is left to run.
    In races, it tends to be a bit easier. There is generally something going on around you to distract from negative ruminations. Slowly closing in on the person in front can be a positive focus whilst I tell myself not to stress if someone goes past me - they are running their own race.
    Otherwise it’s the visualisation of how good it feels when you get home after a good run. Visualise that cup of coffee, putting your feet up, eating a doughnut etc.
    (Looked like the Greenway track?)

      Thanks Matt, great comment and insight. Have to say I generally look forward to races now, but then that’s easier to say when things are generally going well… I guess it’s about trying to relax (what’s the worst that can happen) and enjoy the experience as much as you can. They say smiling in races can help, maybe worth a try? 😄
      And yep the beloved Greenway… you’ll see plenty of videos on this stretch I reckon 😅

      Oh and the counting thing I’ve heard before - @FlobergRuns who I mentioned in the video does it. Something like counting back from 10 minutes or something wild… I’d definitely lose count, but then it’s all just distraction so 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I find 5k on the track quite easy mentally. I just count each 4 laps. Although I did miscount on that same race you did, and I was expecting another lap. Doh! But 10k on the track is hard work mentally! I’ve only done a couple. Worth a go for the experience.

      Yeah I actually found it a lot more enjoyable than I was expecting - but then really struggled the second time so just a case of preparing better I think! Yeah, I bet 10k is interesting… although nothing compared to the ultra ones 😅

      Cheers Timothy! My speed has really improved over the past year - now just the ‘small’ matter of building that speed endurance… 😄

      @@nrg_runs 😂 oh that tiny matter. You've got this man, it's just a matter of time. Do you have an idea of what your target marathon is? I live in Edinburgh so I'll probably run Edinburgh and may head down to Yorkshire later next year.

      @@timothytrewinHa, indeed. Ah I love Edinburgh as a city - never ran it, but have been to the race as a supporter 😊 Definitely can recommend Yorkshire, although there are some tough stretches in it which create an extra challenge! Funny you ask… latest video just out is about exactly that… th-cam.com/video/9B4vsjggsWc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sdhG9-v_QMP40BpW

    I have a mantra thats a bit odd maybe, but it comes from the british heart foundation. “Fight for every heart beat”. There’s a history of heart disease in my family and I just think that when it gets tough, and maybe the heart rate is a bit high. At least I think to myself that I’m fighting.

    • @nrg_runs
      @nrg_runs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah I love that, John. I think if it has personal meaning to you then it’s going to be even more effective! How long have you been using it for?

    • @johnauld9851
      @johnauld9851 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nrg_runs I started using it for my marathon plan in 2017. I remember saying it to myself when I had to get up at 5 am to to a long run on a Wednesday morning before work.

      @@johnauld9851Long time, then. When you find a good one, hold on to it! ❤
      And fair play for the 5am starts - needs must sometimes I know, but I’m not much of an early bird 😬
