I"m a full-time commercial photographer and I've been using the R6 as my daily driver for a little over a year now. Amazing camera. I'm w/you: the upgrades on the Mk II are just not enough to justify a move in that direction.

Great video, and reassuring to know how the r6 still holds up! I'm sticking with the r6, I've switched my rp for the r7 so performance is closer to my r6. Having these two camera bodies I've effectively doubled up on my lens options out of the same 4 lenses by having two different sensors sizes. I'm finding the r7 is so so good. I would have liked an update on the rp yet that doesn't exist right now. worth noting that rp is still super good!

Love a lot of thr points in the video KJ. We all bought into the rf system knowing that the system is still evolving and is still relatively at thr beginning of it's life cycle.
I got my R6 knowing that would be "replaced"* with in a year and as much as I love the smaller changes to the body and the video settings are cool. But it's something you can definitely wait on if you are already in the rf system.

Great, level-headed analysis. My thoughts are exactly the same -- and this means I'll be able to pick up a second R6 body at a good price this year! :) Canon's blistering pace of releasing new cameras (every single one of which has a different body layout! Has Canon ever heard of muscle memory???) is hard to keep up with. I like the R6 I have, and I do sometimes shoot sports and 20 fps has never been a hindrance to me. I also never shoot video. I appreciate you giving advice to people that won't encourage them to go out and spend their lives' savings on gear they don't need. I always feel bad for people who come to forums asking "I just got my new Canon camera and I'm a newbie, what's a good first portrait lens?" and everyone tells them to go buy a $3000 prime. I love all the advice you give on your channel and I'll continue to share your videos!

I had a 5D Mark IV and that's why I got the Mark ii now... what I also like is that it has a 0,5seconds buffer meaning during kisses or ring exchange the camera uses the 0,5seconds before I press the shutter and stacks it all into a collection. And I want to do more video in the future that's why I love that the Mark ii is unlimited in its recording time!

Yes!!! Great advice! I was one of those photographers that shot on a crop Canon 40D from 2007-2021. Professionally the last 6 of those years. I invested in the R6 because I was able to save my own money from my business. Soon after I invested in Lights and Location. The camera upgrade was because I knew my 40D SO WELL And knew it limited me in low light. I needed the upgrade. But I knew I needed more than a fancy upgrade so I then invested in education.

After months of frustration with the R6 I am starting to see what a fantastic camera it is. I have no need to upgrade to the MK II (i may get tempted when the R5 II arrives tho).
I upgraded to the R6 from the 5D IV about 6 months ago. I could, can and have picked up a new DSLR and shot a event a day later. For those jumping into the mirrorless system, don't expect the 'R' system to be like your DSLR. You will need to persevere and learn the new system to get the results but its worth it.

I have 2 R6 and bought a MKII. After having the R6 since day 1, I still love it very much and it is my go to (obviously having many more shoots under my belt with it).
The MkII is awesome as well and I am loving the feel of the grip and over all performance of the camera. I upgraded because I do sport’s photography and the speed is Very useful to me. However, if a person is considering upgrading from an R6, I would totally agree with you KJ, it’s not worth upgrading if you are getting the job done with your MKi.

agree here as well, doing motorsport video and photography, the upgrade does make sense for me but I don't have the previous R6. (Coming from Nikon) Would it be a game changer? No, but comparing the two knowing I want one, the MKII makes more sense on my end

the mkii has a lower slower buffer then the r6 not worth upgrading if you actually do sports.. my sports are done with my 2 r6 and my r3 if needed for very low light.. mkii buffer will not do in shooting sports .. the original R6 delivers better performance. It can work at full speed for about 13s before dropping to 14fps, when using RAW files. Switch to JPG, and it continues at the fastest speed for more than 30 seconds. The R6 II lasts for just over 2 seconds when shooting at 40fps with RAW.

    I did switch to R6mark 2,
They did solve the overheating and no crop on 4k60. It 's a big deal for me
And about the autofocus there is a significant improvemnt when you compare it with R6mark 2. And a few minor usability improvement

Very good answer to the inevitable question " Should I upgrade". That said, I purchased an R6 but returned it and purchased the R5 because I enjoy bird photography, which often happens in low light and requires deep cropping. In my experience, the R5 allows me to crop tighter than the R6 while retaining more detail. Other than this example, I found the original R6 to be excellent.

Thanks for this video. I've been using a Canon EOS Rebel T1i for the last eight years, so it was time to upgrade. Just this week, I chose the R6 with the rf 24-105mm f/4-7.1 is stm lens and an extra battery for less than the R6MkII body only. Still keeping the T1i until I can find an aspiring local to give it to.

I use my R6 a lot as a professional photographer, so I'm thinking about going to the Mark II so I can still get a decent amount of money for my Mark I (hence the new camera costing me less) and also because I don't want to take any chance of getting problems on a shoot with a camera that is getting used/older more and more.

  • @AnandaGarden
    @AnandaGarden ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you, Katelyn. I'm keeping the R6. I would only upgrade if the R6II's sensor fixed the somewhat flat RAW image of the R6 (which you addressed in a video - thanks!), and if it looked much more beautiful and saved me lots of time. I might also upgrade if I had spare $ floating around and the R6 II's automatic subject selection turned out to be spectacularly good. Beyond those points, the R6 autofocus and image quality are wonderful - a fine continuation of the 6D's terrific sensor (not the 6D II).

I shoot fast jets at airshows... some clocking near speeds just below Mach 1... so the upgrade makes sense for me for the FPS alone and the AF improvements are welcome. I completely agree on the megapixels aspect... noise performance on the R6 is superb and is, IMO, better than the 45MP R5 which I also shoot. R6 images are super clean and I am sure the R6mk2 will be the same. I do no video so none of the video features mattered. Great video. Thanks as always.

I think that most people won't *upgrade* from the R6 to the MKII but that the MKII is a fantastic camera to buy if you're looking to buy into the Canon mirrorless system and want to do low-light / hand-held photography. I would have purchased it over the R5 if I'd waited 6 months.

From the standpoint of a wedding photographer, your reasoning makes a lot of sense. If you do longform video and wedding videos like I do, the R6 Mk2 does make a lot of sense. The R6 Mk2 fixes a few issues that makes this camera almost perfect for wedding video/photo hybrid shooters such as overheating in 4k60 fps, the 30 minute time limit in video mode, adding custom video settings.

Hey Katelyn... Let me just say I've been a bit frustrated the the MKII compared to the R6. The R6 I could always nail focus and the MKII just seems to be all over the map making things difficult. Additionally over the last couple of days the Menu Screens have been going bonkers, as I'll be looking for something in the wrench menu and all of a sudden it's over in the AF menu making choices on its own. Last night I did upgrade to the new firmware, but if this thing keeps going squirrely, I'm going to have to leave it at home for my trip and toss my RP in the bag to be the backup for my R6. Tempted to send it back to Canon for them to look at.

and I started taking wedding photos in 2022
I bought the canon r6 1 last spring and I had the canon 6d
I sold the 6d and I had my r6 1 transformed into a spectrum but which will have the possibility of being normal or an infrared
so I still hesitate the canon r (very good for photography) and the r6 and r6 2
I think go little by little to the video and where is my question I am bad in English...
did the famous 30 minutes by putting in 4k often happen....
or else keep only the r6 in video and the j buys the canon r
    or canon r6 2

I traded my 5DIII 2 years ago for the R6. Love it. As with you, the MkII’s features aren’t relevant or appealing to me. I love the R6 sensor and 24x36-ish prints are just gorgeous. I don’t shoot video, so the main selling point of the R6II as a better hybrid camera is meaningless to me. Plus, I’m really used to the on/off switch being the left hand knob from 10 years with the 5DIII. I really dislike the change in the MkII with the left dial being the stills/video switch. So the R6 will be my camera for many years to come. Maybe I’ll take a look when the R5 Mk III comes out. Until then, my money will go into RF glass (I have the 24-105 f4 and the 50 /1.2).

Just bought the R6 for 600.00 below normal selling price...and the EF to R lens adaptor came free. If there is one positive about camera models changing quickly, it is that often the changes are incremental, but the 'older' model becomes an even better buy.

I don't upgrade either - there's an excellent comparison of both cameras with sample footage from James Reader, here on youtube. Major benefit of the R6II seems unlimited recording time and no more overheating - if this wasn't an issue for you, no need to upgrade. It would take a backside illuminated sensor or significantly more megapixels (30+) to make me upgrade.

  • @chronocross85

I upgraded. If you shoot video then I think the extra $400 is worth it. Also I prefer the colors on the R6 Mark II over the original R6. Its somewhat similar to the colors on the R3. Also my presets just work better on the R62. Another thing is that they redesigned the hot shoe which is huge because the R6 and R5 has a faulty design hot shoe which causes your hot shoe to come off over time.

Based on my conversation with Canon USA, the hot shoe internal mounting was redesigned some time ago. There was no external change. The early R5 and R6 models had that issue. The R6 II does have enhanced connectivity.

Considered R6MKII. But after saw discount on Canon factory refurbished R6 and all discounts comes with it, I purchased R6 for $1700 and refurbished RF24-105 f4 L lens for $720. Just received it in completely new condition both camera and lens. I previously had Canon R. Tested with R and my new R6. R6 images are more in focus and sharper(same lens used).

I think the R6 MKII, is mostly for people that are concentrate on an hybrid level of job, because the video specs, are really a way better specs compared to the MKI. But of you're a photographer, then is not worth it. But for videography work, it is really good to upgrade from the MKI.

I wouldn't upgrade but if someone was buying a new Camera and they were looking at the R6 then they should get the R6M2 for sure. One thing you missed is the hotshoe issues that the R6 has had according to Canon forums which is why Canon changed the HotShoe. I used R5 for main pictures/events and the R6 is the reception camera which nobody normally buys a 20x24 print of a reception picture.

Owned both the R6 and R6 MK11...For me it's a substantial difference. The images on the MK11 are sharper and better video options, better dynamic range, no record limit, and something that people are not talking about is the power switch on the original R6 is notorious for breaking off (see Amazon reviews and Reddit posts). This is a $400 fix after the 1-year warranty. This is why the power switch was redesigned in the MK11. In addition the auto focus is snappier and more accurate on the MK11.
The 6k to 4k conversion makes for very sharp 4k video, love it.
My advice...don't walk..RUN from the original and get the MKII, it's a well rounded camera for stills and video that is somewhat future proofed for the next several years.

I w always tell others this. If a new body does have features that you think do apply to your shooting situations then rent the new body and take it for a test run to see if it really worth it before spending that much money. I rented an R6 and some RF lenses to see if that was a worthwhile purchase. I did get a R6 after seeing what features did benefit me. I will likely rent an R6 II because there are some new features that might be a benefit. But by trying it out with a rental would let me know if those features were really worth spending the money on an R6 Mark II.

i never upgraded to the Mii, only because it was such a lateral move that it didn't sense financially to get virtually no visible gain. I eventually got the R7 as additional camera, i quickly realized that the r7 is ok for"4K Fine" video and wildlife photography. I eventually felt that there was no logical affordable upgrade for the R6, and the R6ii was just so minimal. I also eventually got the Sony ZV-E1 for much upgraded video specs. Now that the r5ii is set to be released potentially this week i feel that I may be able to re-invest in Canon, but I could go Sony at any moment :)

Recently in the chair at my dentist, he has 2'x3' prints all around his office of the mysterious corners of the world he has visited with his trustee Lecia medium format something or another. He knows I shoot weddings and we chat about cameras. You know my camera has 50 megapixels! What do you shoot with? I tell him an R6 and he's looks bemused. Then he starts listing numbers. Then I explain if I drop an R6 at a wedding, it would cost me about 1.5 weddings (in terms of profit) to buy another R6. How many more root canals would it take to replace a Leica SL2? Also it doesn't take a 7k camera to make an interesting shot of stonehenge, but dont tell the guy with the drill that.

I can't wait to watch your video where you say the R6 II was for me and I should have switched right away 😉 I did comparison vids on my channel between the r6 and r6 II and as a architectural photographer I noticed a HUGE difference in image and its not because of the extra mega pixels. More control with the anti aliasing filter and color is actually better in video on clog 3.

A few things not mentioned in this video, first is the vastly increased sensor read-out speed of the R6m2, going from about 30 ms to just under 16 ms in full-frame 4K, according to Gerald Undone. Not only is that significant for video rolling shutter, but also for e-shutter stills for capturing fast motion, such as the bride throwing bouquet. Also, e-shutter on the R6m2 maxes out now to 1/16000, not even the R5 can do that, and might help with large aperture outdoor shots. In addition, the overheating issues seem to be re-engineered, as evidenced by the greatly increased video recording limits. This might be important to a hybrid wedding shooter who can't afford to wait for the recovery time if it does overheat. And finally, the battery life improvement using the same battery is almost 40% improvement based on the CIPA ratings, for the casual and enthusiast shooter, this might be the difference of carrying an extra battery or not (initial reviewers in San Diego all said they shot photos and videos the whole day on a single battery). And yes, going from 20fps to an industry-leading 40fps RAW with AF is a game-changer, especially at this price point, beats both the flagships R3 and Sony A1! Adding that all up and the R6m2 upgrade seems worth it to me.

I’ve looked at those references and videos, the only evidence of substance I see are house pictures with supposedly more moire implying a weak or removed Aa filter, but no raw files to compare. I have thousands of raw files from the original R6 and hundreds from the R6m2, and I haven’t seen this over-sharpened or over-processed look in comparison, so if this is a real issue, I like to see a real-life example.

It does amaze me the focus on cameras. But the answer to this question is it depends.
If you do video, and do events and you only have one camera, yeah you need another. But if you have two cameras, and Don't shoot video then no. If you don't have strobes, then invest that money in OCF strobes, this will be the biggest improvement in your photography, ISO doesn't matter so much, your subjects are separated better and you don't have to blow out the skies, like many photographers do. It gives you better photos, more control and better overall pictures. Lighting is everything, not cameras. So that is my response to this question. It depends on what you have now and what you need to get the best photos. P.S. if I was buying a new camera it would be the R3, this camera is a workhorse, it does everything well, feel so comfortable in the hand and the battery lasts forever. Video can shoot at 240fps and it looks amazing. I have two. Save your pennies, this is the camera to get.
