What Is a Xebec Ship?

  • The xebec was a Mediterranean ship with combined sail and rowing propulsion. It was developed from the Mediterranean galley and shared many of its features. The xebec had a much larger sailplan, however.
A xebec would have 2 or 3 masts with lateen sails in a fore-and-aft rigging. The combined sail area of a xebec was large meaning that it could gain speed fast and catch up to other ships.
This speed meant that the xebec was often used as a pirate ship especially by the Barbary corsairs of the Magreb coast of present day Algeria, where it was also developed.

Thank you for this precious content about the Xebecs.
Imagine a modern motor-sailer yacht with this rig. Maybe a 90 foot length or more.

yup exactly, and it seems that no one piece youtube theorists catch up to that .. and actually the ship real name/spelling is (CHibak) the X are the Latin alternative for the (ش) (CH) character and the meaning of the word are (web/fishing web/trapping web) because the algerian sailors/navy (pirates/privateer) used to attack and raid the crossing ships in huge numbers of xebec's and they trapped the targeted ships from different sides so they can't run/maneuver 😁

Ok , what flag is the vessel flying? It looks remarkably like an American flag. Also although the xebec started in the 16th century , they lasted into the 19th century so there is overlap with the creation of the United States of 50 or 60 years.
