What Were Schooners Used for?

  • The schooner was a highly versatile vessel from the age of sail. It was used for shorter distance transport of people and merchandise keeping small harbours and local areas connected to the main harbours, where they functioned as feeder ship for larger vessels.
The schooner was fast and highly maneuverable, which made it a useful fishing vessel and transporter of perishable goods like fruit. Its maneuverability also made it very used for Arctic sailing and exploration.
The high flexibility of the schooner meant that it was the last of the transport vessels from the age of sail to come out of service continuing to service smaller communities and carrying bulk commodities.

The schooner was used in Greenlandic waters until very recently. If you are interested in ships that have sailed in Greenland, then you might like the book "Ships in Greenlandic Waters" available from Post Greenland. You can find the book here: www.stamps.gl/...
Regarding Greenland I recently read and interesting little counterfactual book about an archaeologist finding traces of an ancient culture based on whaling at the coasts of Greenland. Its called "The Whale Culture of Greenland.

These are starting to have a revival now. Sailcargo and Grain de Sail use them.

There are actually still some places in the world where schooners are regularly used for local trade, and due to climate change concerns schooners and other small sailing vessels have been making a small bit of a comeback for local trade in multiple areas and many sailing trade startups have been cropping up over the past few years, which is very interesting. Motorized vessels just can’t keep schooners dead.

That is very interesting. I was unaware that schooners were still used for trade. Could you tell where this is?

    Great video!
Looking forward to seeing more videos of you!
Do you already have a video about the 'Carrack' ?
    The Carrack
is also a very interesting ship type, evolved from the Cog.

Thank you! I have yet to make a video about the carrack, but it is on my list, so it will come at a later date. The carrack is indeed a development of the cog combined with the portugeese caravel.

Cool video! Learned a lot. What is the name of the schooner pictured at 1:20? It has the exact same design as a schooner I have sailed on in the Caribbean.

Thank you happy that you liked the video. Unfortunately I do not know the name of that particular schooner.
