Asking ULEZ protestors about climate change, conspiracy theories, and Sadiq Khan | Extreme Britain

- The backlash against ULEZ since it was expanded has been unbelievable.
We’ve seen vigilantes taking down ulez cameras, the Tories chalked up their win in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election to it and it’s become the defining issue of the London mayoral election, with Tory candidate and Sadiq Khan’s closest rival in the polls Susan Hall promising to scrap it on day one if she becomes mayor.
Sadiq Khan has called Susan hall the most dangerous opponent he’s faced in politics but his lead in the polls is narrowing.
Ed Campbell went to meet the people who want to see an end to Khan's mayoralty and his flagship policy.

They also have like 5 crossrails already and continuing to exapnd their Trams and Metro - hopefully if Khan gets a Labour government they can really get things going in London again.
It’s also run up to Paris olympics, so compare that to London in 2012. There were a lot of “developments”, turned “white elephants” when olympics is over but in the run up to olympics things look better always.

In a wealthy country it shouldn't be.
@apz202 Private car use involves trade-offs and sacrifice. Greater congestion on our roads, greater air pollution, less walkable areas for pedestrians. Even in a rich country, it's a privilege that comes at the expense of others.

The cost to the NHS from people with breathing problems in London doesn't make it into their calculations either.
This latest ULEZ to Outer London will make no difference. Khan was told that and he ignored it and actually got the wording changed on the report. Read the Jacobs Report. All this is doing is ruining people's lives and their businesses. Most of Outer London is rural, with fields, woodlands, country lanes and very poor public transport.
The less well off don't have vehicles. They have to walk or rely on public transport.
You can get a ULEZ compliant car a lot cheaper than £8k. Mine is 20 years old and compliant
This clearly isn't about improving air quality or the environment. If it was they could have done a lot more without increasing surveillance or giving contracts to untrustworthy corporations.
Take away the stupidly low speed limiters on ebikes in the UK (copy rules from countries like Australia or Holland) and give everyone in London free access to massive quantities of ebikes and it would be cheaper AND better for the environment.

@@greatscott369 about the working classes having homes with drives?
@bernardosullivan1654 OK I misunderstood your point there I think.
Those old English men at the Palestine protests looked so kind 🥹
They complain that buying a ULEZ compliant car is too expensive, going to cost £8k... I bought my car in 2018. Second hand, 2002 plate, for £1500. 3.0l engine and barely 20mpg, and it's ULEZ compliant. They have no idea what cars are compliant.
And yes. As a business owner, you should generally pass on the fundamental operating costs of your business to your customers. Including the ULEZ and Congestion charges, if running your business means you have to pay them, to remain profitable.
Yeah a plumber can just add £12.50 onto their daily charges, and where's the issue?
Bloody itemise it and people will clearly know why your rates are up.
Or don't and raise it by thirty quid and still blame Khan.
This is incredibly depressing. To the ladies singing with megaphones who oddly all look like Hall clones........None of us get to do anything for free, especially drive. Everything we do now comes at the cost of impacts to the environment for future generations and it's incredibly important we strive to minimise those impacts. Even if you don't agree climate change is a thing 🙄 you can't deny the effect of vehicle pollution on children's health.
And not a single GCSE was found in that crowd...

From the off, ULEZ is a bad policy, well intentioned, but badly implemented.
Either ban the vehicles that are causing these issues, and scrap them at their current value (for people within the zone) or it's hard to defend this isn't just for revenue from those least likely to afford it.
Can you imagine the outcry if there were an outright ban on older vehicles?! But they have effectively done this in French cities, with the pollution tag system.
@philthrelfall5294 I agree, but either children are dying of pollution or they aren't. What would the acceptable price be to allow kids to get asthma?
I agree it's a bad policy. Get rid of the cars without the burden hitting the poorest. Currently, this looks like a money grab where those affected most are those with older cars, typically the poorest, and it's not really fixing the issue.
@ashjenvey The French 'pollution disk' system would bar the highly polluting vehicles from cities, but the outcry this would cause would be huge. ULEZ, with a scrappage scheme is clunky, but seen as more "British"!!

It's on the border with Kent but still technically in London.

To be completley fair to this absolute shower, there was one almost half decent point made there... which really is, who's farming the data from the ULEZ cameras? Where's it being stored? How long is it being kept for? Who's contracted to handle that data and how can anyone be sure that data is purged at the end of it's useful life? The privacy concerns are pretty valid, I think. If a data breach did happen and all of that driver data leaked, would the people affected be compensated? How would they go about claiming that compensation? These are questions we should all be asking about our data when it's being captured and stored by the state.
If that's your concern, I think your ship sailed a long time ago.
Rather the state, which is supposed to accountable to us, than corporations.
Though in truth the latter owns the former, not us.
@@django3422 it’s not my concern, but I think it’s the single valid argument in the video… you’d be right to question who’s handling and storing the data (a mate of a Tory minister who’s probably never seen a computer before if the Covid PPE shitshow is anything to go by).
@@PostingCringeOnMain I don't think it's valid because London was already teeming with surveillance cameras and most people carry a tracking device in their pocket into which they input their finances, their social life, medical needs etc.
@@django3422 yeah, the problem with that logic is that it implies we should never try to stop something bad happening on the basis that similar bad things are already happening... in other words, why should we try and stop youth knife crime when London is already teeming with young people carrying knives? Just let them carry on, you'll never stop all the young people carrying knives, so why bother to try and stop any?
Sounds kinda stupid when you put it like that, don't ya think?
Also ~I really have a lot less of a problem with Google mining my search terms and selling that data to advertisers so TH-cam knows which brands of shoes to show me between videos than I do the metropolitan police actively monitoring my driving data and potentially passing it to the Crown Prosecution Service. If you can't tell the difference between those two situations then I'd wager to suggest you're more interested in feigning ignorance to win an argument with a stranger on the internet (very coiol and normal) than engaging any kind of critical thought... and more than one thing can be true at once - like supporting ULEZ in principal while ALSO having concernes about data handling and privacy.

The UK has already met it's 2029 NOx target, London's air is cleaner than ever, and the UK's air has never been cleaner for thousands of years. Even the air at Port Talbot is now considered green. The presence of the lichen called 'Usnea' in our cities is proof that the air is clean, because Usnea is hyper sensitive to pollution.
At this time in our social development, when we should be celebrating the success of fierce environmental policies, we turn to blind panic !
What a waste of good intention

So much for 'asking ULEZ protesters', this video seems to be mostly just giving these extremists a voice! Not enough challenging, or pushback - almost a platform for them!!
I wrote a paper on London air quality, Diesel particulate pollution and health-disparities between rich and poor boroughs, long before ULEZ implemented but after its proposal.
It’s really important for people’s health. We can critique it’s implementation but unfortunately most of the argument is fuelled by the individual being worse off endorsing more fringe views associated with conspiracy theorists like 15 minute city
Very interesting, do you happen to have a link for where we could read this for ourselves.
