Last season I was camping next to a river and upstream was a dead deer stuck under a fallen tree in the middle of the river. Drinking downstream from that could be a problem. Lifestraw is ok, but trying to suck water directly out of the river is annoying, you need to almost lay down which in the cold and wet is bad
If one finds themselves without a UV pen or straw filter, fill up & then leave the clear plastic water bottle out in the sun for 5-6 hours, less if you have reflective foil or similar...
got done myself drinking out a creek in vic high country, was so crook i had to sleep with my arse hanging out my swag, my but was flowing like that creek your in
Thanks for sharing mate. Although my heart goes out to the poor soul that does your laundry. lol. Hoping to see you out and about on another adventure soon. Cheers:-)
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer All good mate, tbh I probably would have done the same lol I think it’s just a male thing. I always wait till the last minute and self diagnose first haha. From this end I think I just felt sorry for ya because it sounded painful lol.
Wise words indeed and delivered in a very entertaining manner. You should approach some local primary schools and see if you can sell the video to them as an educational documentary. 😂😂
When you get those little buggers in you....when you need to go...you gotta go....NOW.....when I was young we drank out of every stream we fished in...not now, no where, not worth the chance. Garth
I to have had a good run and have drunk from rivers on all my rides and hikes for years with no issues. Now though, it’s not worth it , not after my last two adventures and getting sick.
Funny I've drunken water from creeks plenty of times, both out bush and in agricultural areas (cattle). Never got sick or anything. Might be due to growing up in the country where there was always something decomposing in the water tanks, rats, cane toads and the odd unlucky possum. I do sanitate water now though, theres nothing to loose doing it and a lot to loose by not having basic water hygiene. Quick question on those 2 occasion you drank creek water, did you collect the water from near stagnant or still areas of the creek or from quick running water (like over a rock feature)?
No, both times from what I would call the freshest cleanest flowing rivers. I have drunk from 100s of rivers with never an issue until recently. Learnt my lesson that’s for sure.
I think it is a bit of pot luck with creeks. I also grew up on untreated water. We also found a dead possum in the gutter and the water would come out of the tap a muddy brown after every storm. Never got sick. Only time I got sick was drinking out of the creek in Walhalla.... unfortunately I think that creek had raw sewage draining into it. I was vomiting for days.

It's all shits and giggles until someone giggles and shits.

Haha. So good. The only giggling was my wife listening to each explosion
Lance, survival straw is so simple and effective my friend, thanks for sharing
Absolutely, I have never used one, but have seen them in action. I should have written a list of methods to not forget any at the time. 🤙
Yep Life Straw.
Camelbak even have one now that plug in line with the quick release hose attachment.
Excellent to have in the kit bag for when needed.
Thanks for the warning. Very good advice.

So true. 😂
A little known tip is wearing your helmet whilst purifying your water can increase your survival chances from river monster attacks.
That’s definitely going all out with protection and the ultimate goal.

Back of my head hurts from laughing. Well said 👏🏽and so true.
Thanks mate. I love the bush and thought I’d try some new videos. However nothing was exaggerated, the dark side of adventure riding at times. 🤙
@@The_Apprentice_Adventurer you mean the brown side of adventure riding
Even though water in a stream/creek/river maybe clean, always the possibility of a dead animal, keep it mind
Nice work Lance. A good precautionary tale 👍

Hahaha. So good. I was lucky to not get real bad until 2 days after my trip. My last day of riding it was building but manageable.
Fantastic video mate 👏 Thanks for the knowledge and laughs 👍🤣

Its no laughing matter, but it was good for a laugh.
What are those things on your feet?
They are my water socks. Good for hikes to keep the shoes dry while not ripping your feet apart on the rocks when crossing rivers.
Well done champ. I enjoyed that vid while sitting here at lunch eating my maggot bag. Mmmm
only monster in that river is that jacked bald guy, Am I right
After my second attack I wasn’t so jacked hahahah.
Great video mate!
Don’t know why you would wait two weeks to see the quack though.
That’s what my wife said. I dead set tried to self diagnose and thought it was from milk (Lactose) I was quick to start drinking milk again lol

Hahaha, well it took me 40 years to learn the hard way. So with some different terminologies you might be into something.
Great stuff Lance.
More please 😎🤯
I have a few more survival tips 😉
Ok .. I'll pay this one .. 👍👍
Council pools have river monsters too!! 😅
Great episode. 😂
