Thank you for uploading this program, but I have a question.
They said "clears path" or "clears a (the) path", at the first phrase of verb they introduced, so I wonder if it is not necessary to place articles or not in this expression. Thank you.
As far as I'm concern that the article takes in this case. This is a specifically statement that over concerns a politics background to decision making on.
Nice question. I'll try
"clears the path" when the accent is on a known path
"clears a path" when the accent is on a possible path yet to be traced
"clears path" when the accent is on removing obstacles (to arrive somewhere, regardless of path's shape)
👍 Good question! 😊 We would need to place an article before 'path' in this expression, which could be 'a' or 'the'.
This continued to puzzle me.
I found the BBC article.
The title is
«Hungary's parliament clears path for Sweden's Nato membership»
The subtitle is
«Sweden has cleared its final obstacle to joining Nato after Hungary's parliament voted to ratify the bid.»
I stubbornly continued to read "clears path" as a synonym for "removes obstacles" - imho no need for article since used in generic way.
Now I went to verify, but it's not easy since my cold makes me fuzzy.
@@bbclearningenglish OK, but what differences are there between a path and the path?

I like your videos congratulations
As a Swede I think Sweden should stay out of Nato
Too bad
Thank you and good bye 🤝
wow
I'm wondering what the difference is between farewell and departure?
Hmm, farewell is moreso just a way to say goodbye. Where as departure/departing is more so the act of leaving and going elsewhere. If you go to an airport, if you are flying elsewhere you would have to go to the departures.
Now, you can use “depart” like farewell. “I must depart” but that is also more of an emotional saying and would sound out of place in a casual conversation.
Hope this helped!
@@Falkriim Thank you so much for your explanation 👏

It's so exciting to learn the English language from BBC learning English.
I don’t really like that you started to push political agenda into learning material.
I understand that you are obligated to do it now ,since 2022, but as a person with Ukrainian citizenship I can say that you display only one point of view.
Why all of journalism standards have been forgotten?
Agree.
Hurdle, would It be a synonym of obstacle?
I think it is.
Perhaps,an old-fashioned word.
According to Cambridge Dictionary, the word "hurdle"is also something difficulty to be dealt with.

No. It is just a hocus-pocus-shifting-focus (*) break before the next episode of the "Not so pleasant reforms" series. Hopefully not in South American's infinite episodes style.

I appreciate you reviewing terms relating to Sweden's participation to NATO. It was one of the hottest issue recently, thus the words and phrases you spoke in the show will help me with conversations with my colleagues during a coffee break.
Hi BBC thanks for important topic. I overcome final hurdle in understanding English native speaker . It is a clear path to incorporate new learnings. Farewall see you next week!
Lovely examples 👍 You just need to include two articles (a/an/the) in your sentence - so it should be: 'I overcame THE final hurdle in understand AN English native speaker'.

It won't take long for the US state debt to double as so many countries out there wanting to spend their money on their well being and not on its own military...

Bad news.
It is.
Why is it a bad news?Could you justify that?
@@diegodiniz-zw9fn , don't you notice OTAN means "war"? It means also to increase weapons spending.
Therefore, reduce investments in sectors that bring real benefit to the population. Joining NATO means increasing the importance of the weapons industry, which is the least mentioned and the one that contributes most to global warming. Furthermore, weapons need to be tested and stocks renewed. How? Mainly making enemies and provoking wars. Why do you believe that NATO did not stop advancing in all directions, but mainly towards the East, even after the end of the Cold War. Yes, I watch RT, to REMAIN well informed and I am against censorship especially on those channels that claim to be democratic and point the finger at others. Is it enough for you?
In modern era Nato can take a more broader role in peacekeeping

The Sweden's Pyrrhic entrance into NATO cleared the path for a farewell to the old world order overwhelmed by too many systemic hurdles.
Maybe Russia should be neutral? Wouldn't that be a good thing. I'm sure Russias neighbours would like that.

Slava Ukraini go Sweden
Hi from Ukraine 🇺🇦
NATO is using us to solve its tasks and problems. Congratulations to Sweden, but it has happened because Ukraine is fighting, having lots of victims!😢
Putin invades Ukraine because he feared western influence on his borders and feels threatened.
Finland and Sweden join NATO.
Putin: looking at a 1000km border to NATO.
*surprised Pikachu face*
Take it easy, will you
Nato should now put 100,000 troops on Russias border with Finland. That will take the pressure off Ukraine
Mastering strategy requires deep thinking abilities and military knowledge.
If 100 thousand come on border with Finland, Russia can provide them with some basic needs logistics, like high quality food and vodka, coupled with some ballet performed by Bolshoi strategic reserves, at a discounted price. Keep in mind that laundry services, for border-line presence, are not contemplated under the military doctrine of the Russian Federation.
If this sounds too complicated, there's Risiko at around £ 30 on Amazon.
The humble were screaming "Make love, not war". We, who are above, sing "Make mind, not tripe".
Finland doesn't ned 100 000 troops. Most of its border to Russia is just bogs. Russia can try that again :P
Its meant to be a diversion. If Nato moves../ so will Comrade Putin. Take the pressure off Ukraine without risking anything
Thanks for video ! I think it's a worst decision for Sweden because this country will pay to NATO for its safety. Russia doesn't want any war. Everybody can find the true about this topic if you want of course.
No, Sweden is paying for its own military. The money it spends goes into its own military. It just have to pay a rather small membership fee. Of course Russia want war, just look how it invaded Ukraine and how it has invaded its neighbours. This is why Finland and Sweden is joining Nato, lol.
Russia showed Sweden that it’s not a trustworthy neighbor. So NATO became the obvious choice.
