    A video breaking down first person animation to it's very basics. I will take you through my journey from capturing reference with a GoPro, to explaining the process and then animating each individual step to completion. Hope this helps those who are interested.

      This video is so good!! Not a lotta good tutorials out there for this stuff, so I'm really glad I watched this one. Especially really cool to see it done by someone working at DICE :D I love these tutorials. Animation is something I've thought about learning about recently so this video is very useful. Also very cool to get a rig to play around with too!

    Note to future animators: 6:21
    While this is a getting started tutorial, and who gives a crap when you're practicing, don't chicken wing your characters in the final product for modern weapons. lol
    Make a vertical V, not a horizontal one < with the elbow. Tuck in the trigger arm and elbow. Extend the barrel arm and hand. It'll look more realistic.
    th-cam.com/video/0AUldPdj9E4/w-d-xo.html
    ^This guy shows a bladed stance (side of torso facing front) but if your character (third person perspective) is wearing body armor because say they're military or police, their chest should be facing forward. In real life you want the plate facing towards the potential enemy bullet.

    • @cburn-YT
      @cburn-YT 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A note for said future animators, a chicken wing stance is fine for traditional rifle grips, a vertical grip is only fine on pistol grips, so anything thats got the grip that resembles an AR, AK, MP5, ect THOSE grips, for a bolt action rifle with a tradition grip, feel free to wing

    I'm curious, after watching you animate the rig, I've just realised that every fps I can think of moves the gun to the camera (head) instead of the other way around. Is this just the "don't fix what isn't broken" approach or is there an inherit flaw that you as an animator are privy to that those of us not in the industry don't understand?
    I've shot a lot of different guns in my life so I have always felt that the way guns are handled via in game animations has always felt off, your video is the first time I've been able to put my finger on why.

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Very good question and well noticed. The other way around as you mentioned is the correct way, but due to the first person camera being used for so much in game and being the centre of attention for the player at all times, it would be slightly disorienting to the player to take him to the object instead of the object showing up in front of him. It’s the same as for example a jump and roll in first person is just a crouch movement with a camera shake but you never stop looking where you are going to sell the felling of it, but not taking the focus and attention of the player away from the center of the screen. (hope that makes sense and it helps a little)
      Thanks for watching and commenting. ;)

    I am so glad that I followed the link that Dennis at DICE tweeted out today. This is mind blowing!
    When I play a game I'm always at least SOMEWHAT conscious of the fact that somebody had to create every single aspect of what I'm experiencing, but it never occurred to me just HOW intense the process truly is.
    After seeing THIS I am definitely going to appreciate the subtle nuances in what each character does while I'm swinging lightsabers & firing blasters in Battlefront 2!

      @@harveynewman You got it!
      Believe me when I say that I understand on a fundamental level how complicated this actually is. I'm still trying to wrap my head around basic CAD. I've got the marketing & the crowdfunding campaign essentially figured out for a simple but gimmicky A.F. "As Seen On TV" type of product, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to actually BUILD the darn thing in 3D.
      So Trust Me, I TOTALLY recognize the level of talent that's required to make something like THAT work!
      ...and THAT is why you and others like you earn The Big Bucks! You've earned 'em.
      Perhaps now you'll also begin to get the Respect and Admiration from the Gaming Community as a whole, from Casual all the way to Pro, that you all deserve as well.
      Rock On, & Keep It Comin'!!

    Nice tutorial! But isn't it bad to make the aim down function an actual animation? Because, if your game had the feature to add sights onto your gun you would need a new animation for every different sight / scope. Wouldn't you therefore just move the first person rig in the game engine towards the camera (so it look through the sight), instead of doing an actual animation for it?

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey...really great question. And it seems like that in most games. But unfortunately the camera is the one thing that needs to be static to avoid disorienting the player. So the weapon is the one being raising to the POV of the camera to give you the ironsight look. We do need to adjust the position and animation depending on scopes. It’s not the most fun work but it’s part of the job.

    You shared awesome insight that in one game need to animate 1st person and 3rd person cycle for same character so my other doubt is if that can be animated to camera how will you animate these kinda games whats the pipeline will Animator animate separatly like these cycles are only gonna be 1st person and 3rd person is gonna be separate or animate like usual 3rd person games and lately somewhere they will add a camera for 1st person which Never animated.

      Well that’s a loaded question. But I understand what you mean.
      It really depends on the studio, the type of shot and what’s it’s mean to be used for. So the answer to all the questions is that you can do it all.
      When you start at a studio the first question is always what’s needed for animation and how can I achieve it in the most effective way positive and then you take it from there.
