However what I want to add are sub elements, so each of the main 4 elements would have sub elements: Fire - Magma Water - Ice Earth - Metal Air - ??? (maybe Lightning?) Still not sure about air's sub element. So sub elements would still mostly follow the rules of their main elements and keep all of the synergies.

Awesome stuff! I love the progression from prototype cylinders to fully modelled characters and scenery, it's looking polished! Have you thought about using behaviour trees for the AI, if you aren't already using them? Looking forward to see how the game progresses!

This is perfect. I love this. You can probably make a general/sensei type to summon AI although it might destroy the fun for some players. You're really good at modeling and effects. You need more subscribers
I know this is quite generic, but after certain amt of kills or xp, you could choose a sword that combats the elemental type of the enemies, such as water sword for fire enemeis, etc. You can choose different swords on basis of buttons, like e for fire, q for water, etc etc.
This looks soo cool and I’m glad your developing it. Some story stuff could be this: you are a lone samurai (ronin if you will) your home country has been invaded and destroyed. You must survive the bounty placed on your head but the traitors are not the only threats lurking in the shadows (oni or demons)
It would be cool, if you added a factions mechanic were the ai fight among themselves cause of factions. Would be even cooler if you could join one and help them in major battles, I think it would be funny to see a major scale battle for such a goofy game.
I like the look of this game. A cool addition will be a side bar to house smoke bomb or grenade? Maybe as more waves spawn Monsters get added to the mix, like ogres, or demons. Worth considering to shake up the gameplay from just bashing hordes of ronin. Really cool game concept that I would definitely play
The game reminds me of Warlord Britannia. I like that you can hire your own troops in it to fight with you and build a base to help with defending when enemies come to attack you. But obviously make this game your own!
The best part are the eyes, they look not so serious but when you see multiple of them rushing at you then its Psycho level, or goofy level depending on whats happening Dont worry everything starts out initially ugly but with effort it grows more into perfection
looks great! an idea for the enemy AI is to make their movement less like a chase. You can have them go around you and attack you from different angles to limit the amount of slashing while walkign backwards.
Love it, I even think there is a really fun potential in the ninja clan fighting (when you tested AI), so its a Vampire Survivors where you upgrade your clan skills
some graphic design ideas (this is gonna be a long): 1-I liked the comment by Ruben D where he suggested ninja's throwing shuriken's at U it gave me an idea, you will prolly be able to block them, and it got me thinking, it would be weird if you had your sword in the same position every time you block something, so what if the sword was set to a random angle every time you block so it looks cooler. but not too off angle cause then it would look wierd. (think of how the light sabers block the bullets in star wars) 2- since the game has katanas and everything, what if you had an animation when you join the game of you having a cool animation of you unsheathing your sword before the game starts.
Another thing, the samurai should have an ability where they dash at you and as soon as the dash ends they slice their sword. also, the sword swing looks good, but it would be cool if your not just swinging it horizontally every slash and instead swing in different directions vertically and diagonally, and maybe you could have combo's in this game and that would be the animation for a basic attack and you could have an animation for a heavy attack. Another thing, as of right now idk what ur plans are for the dash mechanic, but it would be completely awesome if there were some more fast paced movements like wall running or jumping off the walls so we could perform some SICK movements and then just dash toward a bean and slice them. Which brings me to my next idea where there is an ability where you dash toward the bean and then perform some type of elemental attack. (i would prefer if the attack was a Fire attack dash thing bc flames are cool)

What if elements had trade offs, like earth might have slower but harder hitting attacks. Oh, and special attacks gotten by items would be great, you would have to choose between AOE, or a large dmg single strike. And if there is bosses there better be one that can only be defeated by depleating it's poise.
Wow this loooks awesome! It might be a good idea to at some point during the game team up with one faction to defeat another faction. Teaming up with AI can be really fun!
Great devlog))). Suggestion: then slashing ninjas you could split them into 2 pieces thus adding a bit more variety and impact to the combat. I guess making them canon-glass would also make sense as they do not have any armor.
watching the beans battle was what I found to be the most entertaining, I hope that there will still be large battles between the AI factions in the final game

I think each element promoting a different playstyle would be something to consider, while also being able to combine it with other elements What I'm thinking let's say going for a Fire build lets you do AoE DoT damage, upgrades like your weapon is doing Fire damage, enemies that die of fire spread it to other enemies, etc etc. But you could combine a Fire build with Water build, that when extinguishing enemies, damages the remaining fire DoT to the enemy (like a kind of "Shock"), so the build becomes about building up tons of DoT and then killing them all at once with this built up damage Looking forward to your game!
I'm not going to lie...I would love to try some PVP. (I know it ain't exactly rogue-like but cmon....) Game can be fun/complex enough to have a PVP game mode. It could make for a fun tournament event for the Discord server, etc...
I would love to see ragdoll to really show the impact of your swings, crazy elemental effects from upgrades, big orc bosses, blood moon maps and demon katanas and enemies!!

It reminds me of Karlson lol :) As a suggestion, it would be cool if the yin and yang symbol was added in some way since your going for the whole samurai kinda thing, maybe you could add it as some sort of element or weapon?
I feel old now. I remember a time when game devs would just make games where you hit things, get xp, then upgrade and it wasnt inspired by vampire survivors.
The only thing I'm going to be taking from Vampire survivors is the fast leveling and semi random upgrades. Tbh I haven't even played Vampire survivors nor seen many videos about it

My personal opinion about things and what to add: - Proper enemies models, not beans. They might be simple ghost-like flying bodyes with head, stilysh yet not over simplistic. - tbh thats all
Maybe add more abilities to differentiate but keep it balance. For the ninjas more movement based abilities like double jump or wall jumps maybe even like wall running and for the samurai you could give them more attacks and maybe a ranged ability like a shurriken and some charged attack that does more knockback and damage, and a combo system
Very nice project with such satisfying attacks ! One way of improving the whole experience would be by changing how your AI works : using FSMA (Finite State Machine Animator), this would make your code cleaner and would also allow you to make different kinds of AI reusing code parts. Great job !
ok who decided to release a bunch of devlog #1 videos at the same time haha thoughts for game.. give some enemies nodachi so you have to guess how long the sword is if they carry it behind them. maps with archers, throwing stars might be a quick way to add some fun. also get blazed and go over your AI code again ;)
Hear me out on a upgrade. You could grapple a bean and pull yourself towards it or be able to pull it towards you. It could be on a bow weapon where you shoot a grapple arrow on to a bean.

I would love to see this roguelike take inspiration from games other than Vampire survivors. Others games like Enter The Gungeon, The Binding Of Isaac, Gods Will Fall, Hades, and more games of that nature. From Enter The Gungeon you could implement things like the in depth fun story, multiple base characters to play, chest and key system, secret rooms, shop, floor design, the synergy system, the home hub area in which you use your meta currency, etc... From The Binding Of Isaac you have lots of overlap with the previous but also the ability to get items that can entirely alter how you play, very unique game changing and sometimes breaking combos, a system inspired by the angel and devil rooms, etc... From Gods Will Fall the unique bosses, somewhat random starts, passing things between runs, (Particularly in combination with the others you could start with x characters, say 4, each character is always their character and they come with something unique to them such as a weapon, passive item, or active item, but they also get random gear. Then if you die with one you can continue with the next until your entire group dies in which you restart and go to the hub. This could also allow easy multiplayer implementation.), Etc... From Hades you could add the unique separate upgrade routes that the gods offer, the relic you can have for a positive modifier in every run, the ability to choose paths based on rewards perhaps combined with the others open path concept, Between floor rests, etc... And obviously there could be a lot of overlap with each other. If you stick solely to a Vampire survivors style game I think you would miss out on some major potential for an amazing roguelike, keeping the killing for xp system which then allows you to upgrade while also implementing some of these other systems could make an entirely unique and awesome super cool roguelike that I could definitely play for hours on end.
I'm definitely not just going to follow whatever Vampire Survivors, I mean I haven't even played it :D I'll take inspiration from all sorts of games, not only roguelikes.

In this first devlog I tried to get the basic slashing to be as good as possible, there will definitely be other ways of damaging enemies.

I would love to see this roguelike take inspiration from games other than Vampire survivors. Others games like Enter The Gungeon, The Binding Of Isaac, Gods Will Fall, Hades, and more games of that nature. From Enter The Gungeon you could implement things like the in depth fun story, multiple base characters to play, chest and key system, secret rooms, shop, floor design, the synergy system, the home hub area in which you use your meta currency, etc... From The Binding Of Isaac you have lots of overlap with the previous but also the ability to get items that can entirely alter how you play, very unique game changing and sometimes breaking combos, a system inspired by the angel and devil rooms, etc... From Gods Will Fall the unique bosses, somewhat random starts, passing things between runs, (Particularly in combination with the others you could start with x characters, say 4, each character is always their character and they come with something unique to them such as a weapon, passive item, or active item, but they also get random gear. Then if you die with one you can continue with the next until your entire group dies in which you restart and go to the hub. This could also allow easy multiplayer implementation.), Etc... From Hades you could add the unique separate upgrade routes that the gods offer, the relic you can have for a positive modifier in every run, the ability to choose paths based on rewards perhaps combined with the others open path concept, Between floor rests, etc... And obviously there could be a lot of overlap with each other. If you stick solely to a Vampire survivors style game I think you would miss out on some major potential for an amazing roguelike, keeping the killing for xp system which then allows you to upgrade while also implementing some of these other systems could make an entirely unique and awesome super cool roguelike that I could definitely play for hours on end.
I'm definitely not just going to follow whatever Vampire Survivors, I mean I haven't even played it :D
I'll take inspiration from all sorts of games, not only roguelikes.
