Was a Dhaka University student in 1971. Watched the low flying helicopters arriving with Indian Generals on late evening of the 15th to accept surrender the next day. An unforgettable moment filled with somber awe.
A debt that cant ever be repaid by the lives that were saved if the war dragged on.

As a Bengali, which gives me the edge of reading, speaking, listening and understanding the Bengali language, I can assure you that Bangladesh will only go downhill from here. The amount of hate that Bangladeshi people have in their heart for India as a nation and every non-Muslim people is just stupendous! I read Bangladeshi content, not just the recent social media outburst after the worldcup, but their news, their literature etc, for a significant amount of time. From that I can definitely come to the aforementioned conclusion. The country was and is and will be systematically radicalised , and with the introduction of social media, it's just spreading like COVID. With Hasina gone, which will be sooner than later, Bangladesh will become like a second Pakistan towards India and mark my words on it. And it always has been like this unfortunately. It was the majority Bengali Muslim community who contributed into the vote bank of Muslim league in the 1946 pre-independence election, upon which the fate of India was decided and then divided. If you see the electoral maps of the time, you'll see that the present day Pakistan was not the main contributor in the Muslim league vote bank, but rather they grasped Bengal for good and to put the final nail in the coffin, the league conducted genocides like the Great Calcutta Killings, Noakhali, Chattagram etc. So the present day Bangladeshis are the people who wanted the partition the most, not the present day Pakistanis (the original settlers of the land, not the Northern and Western Indian migrators). In 1971, they took our help because they were too desperate and mind it, that maximum of the people killed by Razakars were minority, not majority. They took our help and after that forgot about it and now just mocking us on our face. I belong to a 100% Bangladeshi migrant family, from both of my sides. I have seen my grandparents having nostalgia about Bangladesh and longing for going back to the ancestral land, so did my parents. But honestly, I don't possess the same sentiment and I feel lucky that my ancestors didn't choose to stay in the present day Bangladesh. Partition happened for good, it filtered out the cream from the scrum, this can be definitely said in this case after seeing all these. I am an atheist btw, so don't look for any religious angle.

When hasina wasn't in power, before 2009 they were acting as threat to india as well. That time we hadn't social media or frequent news peddler, so we didn't know, that Bangladesh gave shelter Alpha group Chief and he was operating Insurgency in NE . That Time BNP govt sent 10 trucks of Ammunition to NE separatists and luckily BSF rescued it before reaching to them. In 2001 Bangladesh rifles killed 8 BSF personnel and hanged their body on border fence. None of these news came into public hats off to the Congress govt. I am a Bengali , born and brought up in India after 1971 and writes in the backdrop of the ongoing Jew-Muslim war. My father narrowly escaped east Pakistan and fled to India before 1971 and somehow survived. What his village in Chittagong went through in 1971 is too horrible to write. Let me remind SG that 1971 Bangladesh was not the last genocide Muslims have committed on the face of this earth. Even in my lifetime we had to house harassed Bengali Hindus trying to escape this idiotic community. That's why the heroic liberation war of 1971 holds little meaning to this Hindu. The relative economic success of Bangladesh should also be seen in the light of a nation that is not politically stable, specially for people who don't understand the difference between a community and a nation. If Bangladesh is so futuristic as you describe Mr SG then they would be crying to stop global warming - the best case simulation scenario I have read about is only 1/3rd of Bangaldesh's land area to be claimed by the water. More realistically all of the coastal India will be lost, and most of Bangladesh will be under water - this is my "prophetic" view of the world .

Sekhar, since you are discussing the creation of Bangladesh, could you please focus a bit more on what happened on the Eastern front? While the stories of the Western Front are inspiring, we have heard them quite a lot with a lot higher frequency. This perspective seems more aligned with a Punjabi (west Indian) view of East Bengal, which incidentally, was a primary reason the two pieces of Pakistan couldn't stay together. Not just in Pakistan but even in India the treatment of refugees and many other aspects get unequal treatment when it comes to East vs. West.

Do you know in last 50 years Hindu population has come down from 18/19 % to 7.5% and within few decades it will almost vanish as per demographic study done by a Dhaka university pofessor? Do u know Awami League is equally islamic like all other islamic parties to satisfy demands of common people?
Please also mention these when you try to create a sugar coated narrative about Bangladesh by specifying its economic growth stories. This economic growth is also in danger because of complete islamization of its common people.

All this notwithstanding, B'desh should not be seen as a friendly country by India. They are resentful at being expected to be grateful to India for helping them come into existence, and they also don't feel a whole lot of kinship because of the difference in majority religion. Hindus were approximately 20% of the population in 1971, but only 8.9% of the current Bangladeshi population consists of Hindus. So they have the same murderous attitude toward non-Muslims and Hindus in particular.

But Tamilians are seen as Dravidians and so the North Indian "intelligentsia" who were mostly leftists and Congress supporters didn't interfere in SreeLanka to help Tamilians. Instead they helped the Senhalese who are also believed to belong to the same race as North Indians.

Saw the comments. Well I am from Kolkata too, and my observation tells me that Bangladeshis don't hate indians, their issue is really West Bengalis. Both sides keep fighting each other, make stupid memes against each other, which I really don't understand. If both governments are friendly then why fighting over stupid name calling, water issues etc? Let the respective government do their jobs.

Nope, you are just a short sighted fool. Bangladeshi extremists hate all indians any natural/man made disaster gets celebrated widely in their social media Uttrakhand floods, Sikkim floods, Gujarat bridge collapse to Uttrakashi tunnel disaster they rejoice openly and call it "God's punishment to Indians".

You forget from day one Pakistan was bankrupt.
    It was never financially viable.
East Pakistan before the 1958 coup in Pakistan had a GDP higher than West Pakistan.
From late 60s West Pakistan GDP surpassed that of the East due to reasons which led to 1971 and break up of Pakistan.
Even as late as 1970, more than 70% of Pakistan's foreign exchange used to come from the jute export from East.
So, we shouldn't be surprised at Bangladesh overtaking Pakistani economy as undivided Bengal used to be the richest province in Mughal India due to textile trade.

Military victory wasn't achieved in 13 days but over a 9 months civil war.
India entered only in the last 13 days of a 9 months civil war.
By October of 1971, the Pakistani troops were on the defensive and on the retreat as they were cut off from supplies whereas Mukti Bahini largely consisting of ex East Bengal Regiment and East Bengal Rifles were well supplied by both India and USSR.
Besides this the west Pakistani troops from plains and deserts were completely ill equipped to fight in the wet paddy fields and riverine region of Bangladesh.
American and French forces faced similar predicament in Vietnam.
This is evident if you read Witness To Surrender written by Siddique Salik of Pakistan Army's ISPR.

Yes, but military was active in trainning Mukti Bahini and if u search more u would know that army had already entered BD in October itself. War was officially announced on 3rd Dec and full plethora of wpns could be utilised. ISPR is bullshit they have there own agenda.

Think India entered long before not just in the last 13 days. Just that it was in the form of giving asylum, training East Pakistanis soldiers etc. In all probability Indian agencies started on the Bangladesh plan even before the 9 months. The last 13 days were just a climax to what was going on for a very long time. Mujib in all probability already had the back of India when he made his political demands 6 point plan.
