Holy crap you have been doing this for quite some time! Just following up on my 6 year board upgrades to a XEON and came across your video on that board. :) You're so much younger, quieter (softer tone), an bedazzled with cap!
It wont just run at 2200, no mate and will take a lot of tweaking to get it running there too. Im kinda guessing the fact you asked means you are a beginner so I would personally say stick with 1600MHz. I doubt youll get yours to run at 2200
i know the x58aud3r is a budget board i got a v1 for free with a 920 and 6x2 ddr3 i have had no probs with overclocking the only prob i have noticed witch may be particular to gigabytes x58 series is it doesnt load auto defaults automatically like my ep45ud3p when youve pushed the oc to far but i had no prob getting 3900 on 1.25vcore
I actually used to own a x58a-ud3r v2, good board, BUT, to be honest the one i received didn't overclock well, when i tried setting the memory timings to their rated specs the sound would start to crackle horribly during gaming came to find out that it was a power issue on the board, stock settings ran fine, I know people will say i didn't set the timings on the board correctly, however when i replaced it with a P6X58-E board, i set the memory timings and no crackling no distortion whatsoever
Hi, scuse me for the question. Can you tell me if the x58a ud3r is compatible with ram of 1866 mhz? I want to use 3modules of 4gb to 1866mhz and i am afreid about the inversion.
I have a question regarding that noctua cooler and gigabyte motherboard. I don't know if nocua cooler will block the ram slots I've seen from the vid that it does block at least half of the 6 slots but does it block the other 3 on the right side?
@sassoodi Dear Tom, I got the 1600 speed :) multiplying by 12 ..I tried to X14 (1862Mhz) but it didnt work,so i kept on 1600. Is it ok to put the VGA GTX 480 on the 2nd slot as I put the X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series sound card on the 2nd PCI express (Dont know what can be use for the 1st one ?!!! very tight place) Will the Gtx480 still run at X16 or it will be running at 8X ? (not possible to fit on the 1st PCI) waiting for your advise..thanks
The rev2.0 versions of the UD5 and the UD7 are basically the same boards and the UD3 is nearly the same with just 12 power-phases and another NB/SB heatsink design. So let me tell you to be careful with those boards and a 980X CPU as there are intermittent stability problems - at least with the FA / FB BIOS. Thanks mate for the nice reviews! Looking forward to the 580 and the 69X0 reviews!!!!
What nochua CPU cooler have you got there? I just recently purchased this motherboard and I'm worried about heatsink clearance. I want a noctua cooler but their website says that non of their products (except the discontinued ones) fit this particular motherboard
hey fella... would you consider doing any giveaway's? Sick wicked review as always brother... any news on when your getting you hands on a GTX-580 wink wink... or is this just rubbish speculation like i thought it was.
CAn you tell me which pcie in this board are 16 and which are 8 because thats an important thing to look into when buying a new motherboard, and if you have the rampage iii formula can you tell me if I can run pcie 1 and 3 in 16x because in the Asus website they say its a 16/16,16 so either pcie2 or 3 are 16x
@legendray2008 I dont have the board and Im planning on buying the Rampage III Formula or any board with enough spacing between two graphic cards, I have GTX480 and Im buying another one soon and I need to have them seperated so the first card dont heat up more, and I saw at the Asus website at this board have 16, 16/16 and want to double check.
@TimeToLiveCustoms Thank god..I thought i picked the wrong memory and MB.. As for over clocking the memory to 1600 and the i7 950 to 4.0 mhz plz advise how shall i start..what the steps to get the stable speeds,, is there a 1 2 3 sites to do it..as its my first time to over clock.. many thanks for your help and support
@fefgam Not many CPU's actually need more than this or the Asus Sabertooth tbh dude. the more expensive boards just have more bells and whistles that hardly anyone really uses. If you are buying an i7 950 then this board will get you to 4ghz without any issues if you know your way round the bios. Check out my Noctua NH-D14 vs Thermalright Silver Arrow video dude.
Tom you becoming a Gigabyte Fan Boy? ...LOL Good job on the review. Still waiting to see the review of the new GTX 580 (Wink..Wink...Nudge...Nudge). As always keep up the good work
@firasbkm Whether its first, 2nd, 3rd or 4th .. You can tell just by looking at PCI-E slot .. In the case of x16 ones ,, you should have pins along the whole slot .. but in x8 slots .. pins are not complete .. stop about midway.
well i bought this mobo pretty cheap beacuse it was in open box return online and looks like it is in good condition but i wont know if it works till later when i save up money and get more parts iam aming at a i7 960 and xfx 6970 and 750 modular psu and 2 blu-ray drives and ssd and a 1tb hard drive and maybe 2 reqular dvd burner drives i want to do video editing and all hopefully it will be a cool system
I have the X58A-UD3R Rev 1.0 in my own rig .. and 4.2GHz on my i7 930 is a piece of cacke I was forced to sell my Sky Star 2 PCI card and getting a USB one because I wasn't able to populate that PCI Expansion slot in my 2x5850 setup I have my Xonar STX on the top PCI-E x1.
Ha Tom, but what if you're an Asus fan but don't like the look of the saber tooth :P hehe Loving your reviews dude, I can't wait to see your view on the HD 6970/6990 against the GTX 580
What kind of business are you actually in? I'm going into Electronic Engineering and your job is kind of what I want to do but I'm in engineering school.
@Ksquaredgaming ive had to clear cmos on evry asus and evga board ive ever overclocked notta once on a gigabyte bord yes asus is in my user name just because my first real rig i had an asus board in it the name just stuck with me no im not crazy its just a personal preference
i would say the main resone the ud3r is better than the sabortooth simply put bios bios bios gigabyte boards have the most user friendly bios ive ever worked with i personally detest asus's and evga's bios the ud3r is a great board but the damn northbridge could heat the goodyear hanger
Holy crap you have been doing this for quite some time!
Just following up on my 6 year board upgrades to a XEON and came across your video on that board. :)
You're so much younger, quieter (softer tone), an bedazzled with cap!
@petegrimsby its a spread spectrum issue. Get a sound card there is nothing you can do tbh
Dear Tom,
Support for DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
Does this mean that the UD3R doesn't support 1600 Mhz?
It wont just run at 2200, no mate and will take a lot of tweaking to get it running there too. Im kinda guessing the fact you asked means you are a beginner so I would personally say stick with 1600MHz. I doubt youll get yours to run at 2200
why dont mobo companies make visual appealing boards as well as hardware?
they would sell lots more.
You are the best reviewer on the net imo!!!
keep up the great work Tom!!!
@sassoodi there is no quick answer tbh. Go read some of the threads in the overclocking section on my forum. All the answers are in there dude.
@v8superstars we give loads of stuff away on the website matey
@sassoodi as with all memory above 1333 it will require manually setting up to run at speed but it will do 1600 and beyond fine dude :)
hey tom, have you had a look at the thermalright silver arrow. it beats our noctua by approx. 1 - 2 C :)
a review of the x58a-ud7 would be cool too
@TimeToLiveCustoms
Mint az whens the NDA lifted?
Can't wait for the 580 review!
i know the x58aud3r is a budget board i got a v1 for free with a 920 and 6x2 ddr3 i have had no probs with overclocking the only prob i have noticed witch may be particular to gigabytes x58 series is it doesnt load auto defaults automatically like my ep45ud3p when youve pushed the oc to far but i had no prob getting 3900 on 1.25vcore
@Nadrealis I have staff yes but we all work together. TH-cam is just something I do because I talk to much!
@Jallandhara
Thats not a hat my friend, its a beanie!
if you get audio problems after an overclock how do you overcome this ? i got this problem so i cant overclock much more :(
I actually used to own a x58a-ud3r v2, good board, BUT, to be honest the one i received didn't overclock well, when i tried setting the memory timings to their rated specs the sound would start to crackle horribly during gaming came to find out that it was a power issue on the board, stock settings ran fine, I know people will say i didn't set the timings on the board correctly, however when i replaced it with a P6X58-E board, i set the memory timings and no crackling no distortion whatsoever

@TimeToLiveCustoms link in description missing a .
Can I put 32gb ram on this?
@TheMoo1231 naaa thats old news now dude sorry :(
I have a question regarding that noctua cooler and gigabyte motherboard. I don't know if nocua cooler will block the ram slots I've seen from the vid that it does block at least half of the 6 slots but does it block the other 3 on the right side?
hi Tom, can you review the thermalright venemous X ?
Is the nh-d14 still the best and most quiet cooler on the market?
Still running with the stock cooler on my 965 and omfg it's noisy.
@sassoodi

waiting for your advise..thanks
@TimeToLiveCustoms dude, This vs EVGA X58 SLI 3 - What would you choose? and why is that?
@InferocitoMustang tbh if you are not overclocking just get the cheapest one
The rev2.0 versions of the UD5 and the UD7 are basically the same boards and the UD3 is nearly the same with just 12 power-phases and another NB/SB heatsink design.

@TimeToLiveCustoms Oh, do you have other employees or is this just your own personal venture?
the rammemory do you have to overklock it to 2200mhz.
What nochua CPU cooler have you got there? I just recently purchased this motherboard and I'm worried about heatsink clearance. I want a noctua cooler but their website says that non of their products (except the discontinued ones) fit this particular motherboard
NH-D14 I think - not sure it was years ago
hey fella... would you consider doing any giveaway's?
Sick wicked review as always brother... any news on when your getting you hands on a GTX-580 wink wink... or is this just rubbish speculation like i thought it was.
how much do you spend in thermal paste a month i wonder

@Nadrealis I own a review website dude
where can i get one of those test benches from ??? i like the shirt :) ...
@legendray2008 I dont have the board and Im planning on buying the Rampage III Formula or any board with enough spacing between two graphic cards, I have GTX480 and Im buying another one soon and I need to have them seperated so the first card dont heat up more, and I saw at the Asus website at this board have 16, 16/16 and want to double check.
so true about the layout for graphics cards, i have 2 5770;s on this board and the top ones loves to overheat as it has no room :(
@TimeToLiveCustoms

@TimeToLiveCustoms Haha, what's your FAVOURITE motherboard of all time??
Whether it be for overclocking or for features or for price/performance :)
@v8superstars oh btw Ive got 580s now :D
Can you tell me the dimensions of your cooler?
@firasbkm Whether its first, 2nd, 3rd or 4th ..
You can tell just by looking at PCI-E slot ..
In the case of x16 ones ,, you should have pins along the whole slot ..
but in x8 slots .. pins are not complete .. stop about midway.
@pr0jectSkyneT have got one here to do matey :)
