Getting ready to tackle this in the Spring Glen. Bought a low profile jack for my 2019 GS and ready to get after it. Thank you for another informative, well made video!
I just purchased a 2016 z51 m7 with 28k. I am a diy guy and like learning new things about my vehicle. Just finished clutch and trans fluid changes and will be starting rear dif fluid shortly. I was a trainer for many years and i can say with 100% certainty that your videos are excellent. Thanks very much for a job well done!
When you first showed that fill plug, I knew that joker was going to be tough getting to it. Having the U-joint with tape on it works great as I've used that method too. Keep up the good work Glen and don't work too hard!
Glenn, great job showing this service procedure. Informative and to the point! It is refreshing not hearing some guy exercising his ego as so many of these videos that are more performance than substance. Thank again, my 2014 will definitely benefit from this.
I bought all the back half fluids for my C6. The transmission went easy but the diff was a problem. I didn’t remove the lower plug but I bumped it and it moved. The top wouldn’t budge. I did everything I felt comfortable with to get that top plug out. Eventually I decided to take it to the shop. I didn’t have the guts to put the heat on it. I ended up selling the car before getting it to the shop.
Hello again, just an update on my last comment. I followed your differential fluid change procedure to the letter including putting some electrical tape on the 3/8" universal to reinstall the fill plug which was hugely helpful. As mentioned my Z51 has just turned 28k miles. The fluid level was 1/2 quart low and also there was a fair amount of particles on the drain plug. With your advice, I was happy to get the fluid changed. I did wrap some aluminum foil around the rear support member to prevent any fluid from making its way into the member and then spilling on my beautiful garage floor or pavers in the driveway. However the only fluid that got on the member is when the diff was full and a few drops ran out of the fill hole. Also i cracked but did not remove the fill plug when draining thus limiting the flow of fluid from the drain plug and reducing the chance for a mess! So please accept my sincere appreciation for this and all your videos. Though this is my 3rd Corvette in my lifetime, there is always lots to learn. Its important to have a trusted resource to obtain information and for me, you are that resource! Thanks again!
Thank you Robert I really appreciate your comment and support! It's a good feeling knowing that fresh oil is in the differential and hopefully adding to longevity and reliability. Take it easy. -Glen
Good afternoon Glen, do I need to run the car around to warm this gear oil up before doing this so it will come out easier or does that even matter? Thanks!
If your car is in a very cold climate, lower than 40⁰ it might not be a bad idea. Either way, regardless of ambient temperature the hotter the gear oil the better it will flow out. Have fun, you're in for a treat! Haha
I just changed to rear end fluid in my 2014 C7. It was way easier than I thought. C7 owners need to check the fill and drain plugs on their cars. Both plugs were only finger tight,,,,, OMG! As long as you are under there,,, change it, 3 qts and you are done.
Glenn, I got a little surprised when I got under my C-7. I have a Premiere Edition Convertible (#090) that is a Z-51 3LT. Since the convertible Z-51's do not have a air intake like the coupes do, GM puts 2 ea. 7- 8 inch coolers for the differential just ahead of the drain and fill plugs. This makes getting at these plugs a lot more difficult. I am right in the middle of the job and have both plugs out and I am dreading putting them back in. Perhaps your followers need to know this information before they start the job. This just might be better done by the dealership techs, but it is going to be a lot more costly for the owner.
On my '16 Z51, when I'm turning while backing out of the driveway, there is a shudder. My late Corvette expert said there was an additive that he could put in to limit or eliminate that shudder. Are you familiar with that additive?
I understand that the safe bet is to use the GM brand oil, but according to Lucas their gear oil contains more than adequate friction modifiers at half the cost. Let the discussion begin Lol BTW I've used the electrical tape on the universal swivel trick. Great video 👍
My buddy has used the gear oil 75W90 from Walmart and it costs $5.00 only- he did his Mercedes’ differential fluid change with it too So Should I use the Walmart stuff or spend 20-30$ per quart from name brands who spend tons of money advertising their product which is not superior to any Please advise?
Use the gear oil specifications that the manufacturer recommends. In the long run replacing with cheap oil will cost hundreds to repair from premature wear.
Excellent example of how to change the diff fluid!!
Thank you!
Thanks for posting the video. It couldn't have been more helpful.
Good news James! You're welcome.
Nice job Glenn, you show and explain things so most people understand, thanks
I appreciate your comment Miles, thank you.
Just wanted to say thanks for the videos you've done on the C7! It has helped me save quite a bit of $ in labor.
Great to hear!

That process is way more involved than I have time to type. Factory service manual is best.

Worst part was reinstalling the fill plug. That was a biscuit eater! Thanks Terry

Way to go staying on top of that differential service Glen
Thanks

It's someone else's headache at that point.
I'm going to pull the trigger on a '15 C7 m7 soon.....Awesome vid!
Thanks and good luck.
Precision Transmission has some vette driveline vids on their channel. Wearpoints and stuff and what can happen. Very good vids.
Very true, got only a little lest then 2qrt out of mine. Crazy Right
Sure is
Question about the ELSD. Do you change that as well? Or is there no need to change it? If so how do you do it.
That's the other "differential" I mention and is a much more involved procedure.

Love the Scotty Kilmer reference! 🤣
🤣😁🤣
Glenn, thank you for the video. I am wondering how to change the differential clutch fluid (eLDS). Any suggestions?
Good video thanks for sharing. Beautiful vette Glen
Thank you sir

@@ozzstars_cars LOL, I'm down the road from you so not too cold here! :)
And Bob's your uncle 👍👍 GM fills their axles below the fill hole so it was really low .
Anything to save a dime.
Great Job!
Thank you sir
Thanks for the info.
You're welcome GG
Great DIY vid
Thanks Al
Thanks for this, I’m gonna attempt to do this on my own. I’m not really good at this stuff. 😅
Take your time Joe, use safety stands and pace yourself. Did you watch the video on how to properly jack up your C7?
@@ozzstars_cars yup I watched that too. Watched a few . This one looked the easiest for me to try. So I’m gonna give it a shot

That's true, the plugs are not very tight. Usually the fluid is pretty dirty with anything over 1k miles.

Good info Jeff. The fill plug is tricky to put in, that's for sure. Saving a hundred or two makes the wallet happy. Thanks for sharing!
Any bleeding procedure needed after the oil change because of the cooler in the system?
Nope. My videos don't skip any details.👍
I have c7 2018 grand sport ,how often should the differential oil gear should be changed ?
First 1k miles then every 30k if the car is not track raced.
When should the ELSD fluid be changed?
First soon as possible, even at 5k miles. Then every 60k.
@@ozzstars_cars can you show us where this esld fluid is ?
Don't you need to also bleed the diff cooler oil when doing this procedure?
There isn't one.
Can a bad differential cause vibration while accelerating?
@PrankedYou if the pinion bearing was shot, otherwise they are just noisey when bad. Usually a whine sound.
On my '16 Z51, when I'm turning while backing out of the driveway, there is a shudder. My late Corvette expert said there was an additive that he could put in to limit or eliminate that shudder. Are you familiar with that additive?
The shudder is from the front Ackerman steering geometry and is normal because of the design. One of these days I'll make a video about it.
Yo I'm In Coatesville and I saw your Corvette
Enjoy the races.
Nothing funner than working in super tight places under a car.
It's a good challenge.
I use same fluid but I'd bet something like amzoil without modifier would be just as good. I ain't risking though lol.
The problem is none of the chemical producers are obligated to print the ingredients on the label. No clue what's going in there! Hmm
always fun doing maintenance on your own baby, so satisfying lol
Haha took me almost a year to motivate myself to do the diff gear oil change. lol
@@ozzstars_cars I'm at 36k on my versa. Time to change the manual trans fluid 👍
Maybe a dumb question.. but.. is this procedure done on a 2016 C7 Z06 Z07. Automatic or just the manual?
All C7's with automatic or manual transmissions.
I understand that the safe bet is to use the GM brand oil, but according to Lucas their gear oil contains more than adequate friction modifiers at half the cost. Let the discussion begin Lol BTW I've used the electrical tape on the universal swivel trick. Great video 👍

Hi, Is it ok to change the rear diff fluid at 43K miles?, I have a 2017 camaro ss
Shouldn't be anything wrong with that if done correctly and with the correct fluid.
🔥💪😂
