I can only believe that people at Disney corporate cursed themselves at how Harry Potter slipped through their fingers - and doubly cursed themselves when Universal ran with it - and continues to run with it - at least in the theme parks.
Part of business, but especially big business, isn't just making sure that you win - you also have to make sure your opponents lose - and that's not necessarily the same thing.

What were you expecting would happen to them? Play the same 30 year old's they were in OT? The actors are in their 60s and 70s now. Carrie Fisher died in real life halfway through making the third film. These characters weren't going to be around forever. How is the TLJ disrespectful? TLJ was about generational disillusionment. Luke, Rey and Kylo are all disillusioned with trying to live up to the respective legacies that overshadow them. That's the point the film was trying to tell you. But that went over your head because you wanted Super Saiyan Jedi Luke from the EU.

@@BlueHooloovoo A competent writer can write a story with the old trio, and then include new characters in their adventures. TLJ took the most hopeful and beloved character, by most, in the series, and turned him into a whiny bitch who gave up and abandoned his friends and family. Luke would never do that, as Mark Hamill himself said in plenty of interviews. On top of that Luke tried to kill Kylo, which is completely out of character. Luke could not kill his mega murderous Father, yet he will try to kill own nephew? Don't say Luke sensed Kylo's dark, side, because Rey, could sense good in him. Ruin Johnson did not comprehend the lore and the overall message of the originals, so he wrote this awful story as a result. TLJ disrespects its core characters, the original story, and even the new characters. A boring space chase, with an even more boring Casino mission. TLJ kills the original legacy, attempts to be funny and it fails miserably. What i can't comprehend is why are you defending this POS movie.

Absolutely! The Force is female in those books, Mara Jade & Jaina Solo are such better characters than anything they have come up with so far. I think the drawback to going to those books is that Harrison, Carrie and Mark were so old that they would have to be recast, and maybe that seemed like a bridge too far. After Solo flopped, I think anyone who is going to suggest recasting any of the big 3 and doing sequels based on those characters should have their personal effects pre-packed, because they will probably get fired. Truth is, as an old-school SW fan I would rather see new actors in a good story than the originals in a bad and insulting story.

Indeed, the new movies would have needed to be set _after_ the New Jedi Order books were set anyway, if they were going to include the old main cast.
I think "killing" Jacen, Jaina, Mara and the others was such a lost opportunity. They could have introduced them as adults but kept them at the fringe of the new story. Then taken advantage of them and made a TV series about when they were young: and boosted sales of the existing old books and other material in the process instead of throwing them at the waste-heap.

Forget the fact that up to that point, for 35 years a film franchise expanded beyond just the screen. It established a fanbase that thanks to the Marvel comics, other comics, games and other media gave people something to pass down to their kids. I am not saying that all of these ideas are without criticism , but are just as important as the lore behind say Iron Man, Thor or any other MCU character.

Pixar was an established Independent Studio. It just had to keep doing what it was doing. Same with the MCU. As far as film production goes, LucasFilm was the closest thing to a "clean slate" they had. Not because it didn't have an established universe, but because minus an active EU universe (which, to be fair, Lucas also dismissed as Canon for any future film production if he wanted to go another way and did ignore during the prequel as there were continuity conflicts). But it was dormant as a film franchise and not doing much on TV either. This isn't a down vote. Literally Disney could have done nothing but collect from there ownership of the old stuff, but no they got greedy and wanted to shove almost everything pre existing down the toilet.

Star Wars worked because George Lucas’ vision and Irvin Kirshner’s guidance. Ghostbusters worked because of Dan Aykroyd’s vision and Harold Ramis’ guidance. Star Trek worked because of Gene Roddenberry’s vision and Gene Coon’s guidance. These are myths, and so you always want to have an outstretched hand to people who might not have that background. And so you're really telling two stories at once. Yes, but hyper-woke Netflix was always going to treat Dark Crystal right, with reverence: because the Gelfling are matriarchal, and combating a patriarchal society: the Skesis ( see making-of documentary on Netflix ). The world of Thra, itself, has a kind Gaia-esque female sensibility to it, with Aughra claiming she _is_ Thra. This goes right up their New Age, 'The Force is Female', Bobo alley! Unfortunately for Star Wars, however, it had always been, traditionally, a male-oriented franchise - which is why toys were, and still are, found in the boy-isle. So we couldn't expect a respectful treatment from rabid feminists on that account; they had to screw it up to show boys they had the power, now, under the guise of allegedly expanding marketshare to girls ( which predictably failed ).

    • @Trazynn
      @Trazynn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's pretty based in that messaging really. At its core The Dark Crystal is about it balance in everything. It then took a guy to say 'fuck this shit', who then first got cancelled by society to kick things into gear.

Star Wars had baggage: a ONE, single timeline and lore that dated back 40 years. Many aspects of the SW universe had been established in games, comics, movies, and tv shows. There is a continuity that exists between all SW-related media. Its fans understood this.
Marvel: It came with a "blank" slate. while Marvel comics has been around for longer than SW, it is understood that many universes exist. There are already like 8 (probably more) different established comic universes and numerous tv show universes. There is no required continuity across the different Marvel media. Its movies can be started from scratch. And it was. Characters were given origin stories and storylines that deviated heavily from their comic counterparts. Its fans understood this.
As such, making a SW film comes with an increased possibility of messing up the established lore. Luke's character assassination, Leia's force powers, the knights of ren, snoke, the continuation of the republic empire after the death of the emperor (i can go on and on). You can't just push out new stuff that contradicts years and years of backstory (unlike Marvel). There is only one Luke skywalker, one han solo, one leia. Marvel has 3 different Peter parkers over the last decade.
TLD: they angered the SW fans with inconsistent storytelling. We didn't like it. And we know there's no going back. So why continue watching?

"Solo" was an origin story, but should simply have been a heist movie, set in the Star Wars universe.
"The Mandalorian" seems to be a western series, set in the Star Wars universe.
A "Kenobi" movie could be a detective or spy thriller, set in the Star Wars universe.
Why is this so hard? Just get a known character from the Star Wars universe, set them in the Star Wars universe.....and start going through the classical movie genres.
A "Wedge" (or perhaps "Antilles") movie could be a space combat movie. A cross over with a sequel to "Rogue One" could be a special forces scoot-n-loot action movie. It could tell the story of the development of the B-Wing.
I am sure they could get away with a sort of submarine movie, a martial arts movie (think Donnie Yen) or even a comedy.

From what I can tell, Disney Star Wars failed because:
    1) No planning - or rather very poor planning. On top of believing Star Wars was a guaranteed win (see Galaxy’s Edge), they really didn’t have a set plan for where the story was going to end up. This is apparent with how Ruin Johnson went on his own tangent. Speaking of which...
    2) Not enough people onboard who understand/respect the source material. George made his own mistakes with retcons and bits that didn’t add up from Prequel to OT, but there were still signs that he tried and put passion into those films with himself and the people he brought onboard. The writers currently working on the franchise save for Filloni and a handful of others seem to have their own interests at heart rather than the continuation of the story.
    3) I know that there are people prowling for a fight, so I’ll just say this before going on. Absolutely nothing wrong with diversity. But when you uphold diversity to the detriment of product quality, you’re setting up yourself for failure.
    4) Never - *NEVER* - insult your target demographic or your customer base. To loosely quote my marketing professor, people will remember how you made them feel. And if it was something the class could collectively agree on, a successful marketing campaign requires you to respect your customers. They’re the source of your income and you aren’t doing yourself any favors by scratching at the hand that feeds you.
    5) This is just a shot in the dark, but from what I can tell, they’ve been carrying out little-to-no market research to understand who is buying what. Why else would they license Star Wars games to EA, a company with perhaps the most consistently tainted reputation within the last decade? Even a Google search could reveal how the public felt about the infamous game developer and how many games they’ve botched/studios they’ve dissolved. And it’s this horrendous decision which is giving me a nasty impression of what might be going on under the hood.
In other words, it’s too late for any course correction that would be affective. It’s been seven years since acquisition, two since the Star Wars disasters of 2017. Any opportunity for repair is long-gone and everyone walks away with this with scars that won’t be forgotten. Aside from a complete culling of the writer’s and heads within the Lucasfilm division, I don’t see how they’re bouncing back.

Out of all seriousness, Rian Johnson's ego and bombastic behavior is a lot more destructive than most are willing to realize. Disney has done little to disavow his words over the last two years.

What it needs is a new direction completely removed from what came before. The mandalorian looks 10 times more interesting than the current movies. It's not good enough to rehash what was there before. Those remakes never work out, financially they tend to under perform. Look at MIB, Ghostbusters and everything else that rides the nostalgia wave. Fans don't want more of the same, they want a continuation and new stories set in the same universe. The star Wars games for example did this really well early on. Tie Fighter, knights of the old republic etc. Showed this to be true.

I’m saying this as a (once upon a time ago) hard core Disney fan first and foremost. In the first few years of his running Disney, I actually backed Bob Iger. I always felt Disney buying PIXAR made sense, and in that same time period, we had things like the promise of Disney Animation returning to hand drawn films, new Disney nature films, a continuation of the classic Disney IP on home media and so on. It actually felt like the Disney brand might be respected under Iger.
Then he bought Marvel, and from that point forward, it’s just gotten worse. I fully agree with the assessment of the executives under Eisner, that Marvel was too edgy for Disney. The brands don’t mix, and still don’t. It’s been under Disney that Marvel Comics has gone full blown SJW. I don’t feel Disney had any business buying LucasFilm or Fox especially. Maybe Iger has made a ton of money for the stockholders (he’s also created a lot of debt), but it’s been at the cost of the Disney brand and what made it special. Disney used to mean creativity and top tier guest experiences. I don’t feel it does anymore. It now means retreads and subpar service at insane prices.

Okay, I have a huge problem with this video. Many times people try to blame a few people for some systematic issues. They blamed Snyder for the original DCEU issues (even though great directors and actors CAN screw up) and they blame Ryan Johnson for the Last Jedi. And now, Iger and Kennedy are being hated on.
But that's not really fair. Both are competent and did an amazing job.
If Star Wars had to be restarted, she was perfect for the role, since she actually did pretty well.
The problem with Star Wars is simpler than anything you talked about. Star Wars... was a finished story. It had a happily ever after, one that lasted for over 30 years.
And because of that, creating a sequel was in itself, something flawed.
But we also have to look at reality. How much of Star Wars hate we have in us is because the movies and decisions are bad, and how much is because our happily ever after that we had for 30 years was destroyed???
I mean, people have been looking for any excuse to hate on Kennedy. I mean, that "Force is female" thing, which wasn't even a Star Wars thing was making people pissed about how she was "changing canon" when all she was doing was having fun and encouraging girls. And she wore it because hey "force" is often a word attributed to Star Wars.. but it actually had nothing to do with Star Wars. She just decided to support it cause she thought it was cool.
But hey, they tried to see it as her changing the Star Wars lore... because random t-shirt slogans somehow effect canon...

Looking at Iger's 3 main planks for Disney's mission statement, the first one stands out, "Making branded content." Franchises. When you plan to pad out a story into an extended universe, the longevity of the thing runs a high risk of overtaking the storytelling as priority. By it's very nature it has to. Unless you have people creating a story that can foresee things well ahead of time - or are just that creative and are given the room to improvise and distill the story down until it really works (arguably Pixar's formula of success), a franchise is just going to end up a rushed, bloated opaque mess.
Couple this with Iger's second plank of "Technology changing the workforce," i.e., assigning too many hats to too few employees who actually create the film, since everything's digital now. This also makes for too many moving parts for mid-tier or higher management to oversee: Studios thinking that films need an increasing amount of CGi, which inflates the production pipeline by number of EFX shots required, number of EFX houses outsourced to, etc. Ultimately the magic tool of technology convinces management that fewer domestic heads need less time to make the thing, and schedules become increasingly constricted, communication between workers and management literally more distant with outsourcing. In the end, it's a top heavy bureaucratic nightmare of a production, with the story elements increasingly controlled by committee at the executive level.
And, the all too human misconception, that what worked before will always work in perpetuity. For Iger, making branded content worked for a decade or more with Pixar and Marvel. He banked on it working again with Star Wars, overlooking as the video points out that Lucasfilm was a studio without any substantive projects when it was bought.
Or rather, Iger's third plank, "Becoming t̶h̶e̶ D̶u̶t̶c̶h̶ ̶E̶a̶s̶t̶ ̶I̶n̶d̶i̶a̶ ̶T̶r̶a̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶C̶o̶m̶p̶a̶n̶y̶ a global company" was his torch of progress that probably compelled him (along with his commitment to investors) to move forward on it.
