      Everyone. Literally every single English football supporter looked at the screen in aguish when we saw an England corner. Every single corner that was taken was a waste and we all knew that if Harry Kane was in the box we'd have converted so many more. Anyone can ping a ball onto the penalty spot for a big CB to get his big slab head on it. Literally even I can do that 10/10 times.
      Such a bloody waste. You can't tell me that there was a unanimous agreement in the England camp on the decision for Harry Kane to take corners.
      I'm not understating it when I say that he was without a shadow of a doubt the WORST player to take a corner. I'd have preferred Joe Hart to take them.

      Adrian 1977 Kearney it is dumb to take away a box threat but you definitely can’t just have “anyone else take it”, you still need a good corner taker. In Rooneys case, he wasn’t the best at headers and he was pretty good at whipping in a corner.

    • @kevinthorp6982
      @kevinthorp6982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Adrian 1977 Kearney you're totally right, take into account Van persie and Rooney were more all around players, so they have the ability to take a corner properly and set up the play, though Kare is a pure 9 which make that decision nonsense. England coaches are horrible. The one's in charge of the national team tho

    • @JChimos
      @JChimos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. Y'all are stupid if you genuinely think it matters which professional footballer takes a corner. Any of them can swing it in. All that matters is that they're not preferred elsewhere.
      I can hit the penalty spot every single time, and I can swing it in or out. You telling me i'm better than some professional footballers at taking corners? I'm pretty sure you'd all rather Kyle Walker swing it in than me.
      Pretty sure Harry Kane failed to beat the first man a couple of times as well.
      Maybe Beckham set the bar too high.

    I feel like English players have a lot more "hatred" amongst them. They take their rivalry beyond club football that's why they don't have much cohesion when they play for the national team. Iceland was a proper team, those players played together from they were children, most played for lesser teams around Europe. As a team they qualified for a major tournament for the first time in Iceland’s history. For the whole, tiny nation of Iceland, that competition was everything. The players understood that however their careers had gone before that, it was a unique opportunity to prove they were real players 🇮🇸

      English4Football: adding some more meat to the bone as if it were, Ryan Giggs for me put it best when he said, "when I watch England play there seems to be a lack of ability to simply solve problems on the pitch" when the ref blows the whistle. I think he's right. I'm 41 and in my life time the only occasions I can remember England stopping key players from performing is Italy 90 (lucky against Cameroon in the quarters never stopped r.miller with others in that team but) great performance against w.germany no one could have asked anymore; Euro 96 outstanding against the Dutch and kept Germans quite like Berfhoff; sammer etc in semis; France 98 what a performance against Argentina, no one could have asked of any more and then limped into the semis in Russia during a very diluted tournament (i.e no Holland, Italy etc). All other tournaments England have failed miserably at containing marque players, never mind doing the simple things like defending corners properly 😡

    I’m from the US, but a fan of England football. I think the issue starts with the individual player’s obsession over their own club. In a separate interview, I remember Ferdinand and Gerard owning up to the reality that players were sitting at different tables while spending time with the England National team. They spoke about an issue with legitimately building the team chemistry off the pitch. Here in the US, we don’t have that problem because the MLS is already a joke. Players have passion for their club but it’s incomparable to the passion I see players have in England for their own clubs. It’s a double edged sword.

      Michael, as Liverpool fan (from the city) I can honestly say the main issue is fans don’t care as much about their national side as they do their premier league team.
      The Premier League and the Champions League are so far ahead of the National game that we don’t care. The players also don’t care. It is a redundant form of football. The quality is dire and as such it is not that important.
      Also.....players play 70 game seasons, they play qualifiers they always win, they arrive at the tournaments and are exhausted. We play more than any European league.

      That is why that song, 'Southgate, You're The One' became so popular and I think it is that first line which rings so true to fans: "Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape and I cannot forget".
      Although, you should look into what happened behind the scenes of the FA over the last 10 years and you will see that it wasn't quite a quick turn around as it seems. It was actually has been year 6 to 9 of a 10 year plan that Gareth Southgate and Sir Trevor Brooking put together in 2012 and worked out.
      Basically they realised the issue was with developing players so went about changing everything at grassroots, academies and youth teams. Then helped change the set up to line him up as the next in line to the throne to be the next England Manager. However, they predicted that their plan would show fruit in 2018/2020. Roy Hodgson resigned 2 years earlier than expected leading to a suspicious chain of events which went off course and then back on course again.

    A midfield three of Dier, Dele and an over-the-hill Rooney was curtains. All three can't control a midfield. We have always had midfield players who can control matches, who are not fashionable, either sat on the bench or not even picked. Instead they go for guys who catch headlines or score a few goals. We have never valued controlling midfield players as high as they do on the continent. Players like Carrick, Scholes were barely ever consistently used properly. In Italy or Spain they would have had 80-100 caps minimum just controlling the matches. In 2016 they had plenty of central midfield players(less fashionable) who could have controlled the matches.

Despite what those players did in their careers and how they're viewed now? Won fuck all for England, underperforming massively in the major tournaments. We're not the only nation (or football team) to have wasted a golden generation of talent. Overconfident? Uruguay who've won two world cups are south America's most successful national team in the cops America! 1966 was a flash in the pan and nothing since then has even remotely suggested that England are a top national team! Huge infrastructure, top stadiums, perfect pitches, handsomely financed football Associations etc etc! Fact of the matter is, when it comes to players, they're just not very good! You can't pass the ball 😂

    No respect for the opponent. When England played us in 1990, 1996 and 2010 the German team was always described as inferior and mediocre. English punditry somehow lives in a parallel world.

    • @jossym
      @jossym 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      96 you're right, England were classed as favourites being as we were at home. But 90 - absolutely not, West Germany were red hot favourites and every pundit and fan thought at best a decent England side had a punchers chance if Gazza carried on playing like he had been. As for 2010 - the entire country considered Capello's team to be utter shit.

      England players are mentally weak. They can't handle the pressure and expectation of playing for England in big games. The 2nd half against Iceland was the epitome of this, they collapsed mentally. Couldn't even make basic 10 yard passes. All they were thinking about were the headlines when they got home.
      England literally haven't beaten a noted side in a knockout game since 1996 lol. And that was when we had home advantage. Argentina, Brazil, Italy (twice), Portugal (twice), Germany, Croatia, Uruguay. 0 for 9 in knockout games against quality opposition. Any many wouldn't even include Croatia in that.

    Kane on corners and free-kicks, Wilshere not kicked a ball all season, Hart was full of errors, Rooney played CM even though he wasn't a CM.
    Iceland's first goal was a routine set-piece they used in a previous game v Austria, so England knew about it. Yet, they messed that up as well putting Rooney on the tallest player.
    So many errors, but the squad selection was the biggest error by Roy Hodgson. How Harry Redknapp didn't get the job at the time was the real question. Still, roll on 2021!

    there was a guy is school who was essentially a bully. He would cut people down by what they wore or how they looked to the point they almost broke down. One guy had had enough and took him out, outside the chip shop at lunchtime with three swift, unexpected punches. He had underestimated his victim and over-estimated his confidence, or arrogance. Neville has just said it. For two years England were 'pretty good, beat Germany, done well against Holland and France. We were really confident'. So, who was Iceland? Never underestimate the little guy.
