@@notreal1477 you make your own luck and we made ours by playing on the front foot and dominating. You can’t complain about how you lose when you have four times fewer efforts at goal than the opposition. when i was a youngster in the mid 90's i was playing football at a decent school level and for other teams. But the coaching back then was terrible.. and i knew it even back then. All the coaches looked for in players was strength and pace. all they wanted was the players to run down the wing and cross the ball. no imagination, no skill. just 100% focus on pace and strength. İ would always attempt back heals and flicks but each time i was told to stop. İ was even taken off the field once for doing a successful back heal becuase ı had been warned not to. skill and technical ability was coached out of young players in favour of strength and pace. so it doesnt surprise me that we are miles behind other nations regarding skill and technique.

      He’s not a great manager
England only beat Croatia because they’re old now.
And England aren’t good enough to beat Scotland
And England only won the group cause it was an easy group and they’ve only scored 2 goals (and Kane isn’t scoring).
And England only beat Germany because it’s the weakest Germany side.
And Ukraine were rubbish and that’s why England got past them.
And Denmark were robbed even though England had more possession, more shots, more shots on target and were fouled more.
Or …Gareth Southgate actually knows what he’s doing and is working to that plan.

Southgate has massively improved the side whether people like it or not. No one expects England to even do well in tournaments these days, but so far that is 3 semi finals in 3 years, 2 for major competitions (not sure if nations league counts). People will complain about the teams they faced also, but England were crashing out in the round of 16 to the likes of Iceland and I'm pretty sure that the likes of Colombia, Sweden, Croatia (whom beat England), Germany and maybe even Ukraine are all better teams.

@@carlybishop6160 Not to mention there was a point that England couldnt even qualify for a tournament (Euros 2008), then losing in the first round after group stages (euro 2012) and the same after in 2016 to Iceland. In the world cup it's been the same story also, knocked out in the first round after group stages (2010), finished bottom of the group stages in 2014 (where a finished Italy, not the best of Uruguayian teams and minnows Costa Rica finished above England). Notice how it's been the same story over and over again right up until Southgate got appointed, his first major tournament (Semi finals in the 2018 world cup - massive improvement already), 3rd place in the Nations League (the pattern of consistency starting to form - though can't break that semi final deadlock and in fact a semi finals curse is beginning to form as opposed to a group stage curse or a round of 16 curse lol), and now 2nd place in the Euros, first finals in 55 years with countless of different managers not being able to even once get into a final within that long timeframe. Every tourney so far there's literally been an improvement - not a step sideways or step back; WC2018: 4th, Nations League: 3rd, Euro 2020: 2nd. Was the closest to winning it aswell, the fact it went to penalties meant that the game wasn't decided by a result but by a 50/50 lottery chance in penalties, shows how far England have come through.

Gareth Southgate has drastically changed the culture and thinking around English football and the national team. Thoughtful in his considerations about his own team's strengths and weaknesses, as well as smart tactical and personnel decisions- which has led to England being a genuinely competitive and courageous team. He's led with such humility, thoughtfulness, compassion and boldness and established a joy playing for England not rooted arrogance and hostility towards others which is returned with a fierce loyalty from the players- dude's been incredible.

@@carlybishop6160 "how close" was that? A Marko Arnautovic "goal" which was miles offside? Enough with those narratives, Italy had the best chances in this game but somehow because Austria were better for 20-25 minutes out of 120, the perception is that Italy were close to losing.
As for England it's too easy to say it was "just one game" when that game happened to be the first time they were coming up against a technically superior opponent. The same would have happened earlier had the drawn not allowed them to avoid France, Spain and Belgium.

@@oldskoolmusicnostalgia England can keep the ball when they want to. I think England were lured into a false sense of control, that despite Italy turning up the heat, they could just keep defending and see out the game. In extra time when England had composed themselves slightly, they found themselves to be a bit more dominant on the ball.
England are a side that can dominate possession; but you need the right players on the pitch and a more attacking mentality. Had the game remained 0-0 for a longer period I think England would've had more of the ball.

    • @BigSmokeMUFC

You're surely not comparing Ireland to England in terms of football? England has a huge world acclaimed league, invest hundreds of millions in football and a huge catchment population. Ireland has around five million people and rugby is by far the most popular sport. Ireland qualifying for and being competitive in past world cups and European championships was really the pinnacle of expectations for Ireland. It's not Roy Keane who is saying England have all the best players and are going to win the euros with ease

    • @clemfandango619

@seanq5223 so Keane can just bitch about England without any comeback? The population thing is so pathetic - you don't hear English people playing the population card when they lose at cricket to India - a country with 26 times as many people as England. Is there no Rugby played in England? If the Irish Love Rugby so much, then how come they've only won four grand slams and lost more games than they've won.

All of which tackles those issues. Roy Keane great player, but sometimes he goes a little over the edge and is very bias.

Well if you pay attention here, he hinted at the plan he is implementing and when he expected to see results. I think he is currently on track with his own personal targets.
It’s quite clear that of all the panel here, he is the most rational, considered pundit here and has honestly assessed England’s issues and how to fix them. We are seeing the results of this now

i think Southgate just wants to play Spqnish tiki taka, hmmmm thats how we were at 2018 world cup. Pochetino would be an awesome England manager, he knows how to util8se our best player in Kane. Perhaps he can manage Spurs and England at the same time

He has a point he said the youth has to be developed enough.
Clearly youth players we have are showing that just need the right system in place to implement them as well as game time at club level.
Give Gareth time, hodgson couldn't even beta Iceland for flip sake.

@@ay613 hahaha hes i agree with you they need time. Perhaps my problem is Southgates style but its football in general these days. Watching old clips the long balls of Beckham and Gerrard were so exciting and now the repetitive go no where passing and dribbling of Barcelona influence has really made football a lot more boring and diving has crept in.

    • @ay613

@@Creees yh I would like to say we need more variance in our play. But we do need to improve our passing game that's kind of been the reason we've done rubbish take the game in the video or in general.
We need right now a creator someone to create chances and a good defender or world class is what I mean.

Roy Hodgson just didn't have many options, the only decent players he had available were Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole. They were past their best and still Lampard wasn't in the squad. He was a crap manager but the fact that he didn't have a very good squad didn't help that either. Gareth Southgate sort of knows what he is talking about, he knew that he had fewer top level players available as England manager and likely made sure to pick the right ones for the squad.

Who remembers Wimbledon long ball and hard winning. Why don't England pick a team witch matches their playing style. Pick players that do the job in their position. Lampard and Gerrard were the same and didn't flow. Go back to spirit down to earth personalities. Scrappers and Jack Russel tacklers. Long ball and headers. Theres nothing more scary then a long ball into or near box for international games. Theres that nervousness attached to a defender in these games and more hiccups for a forward to pounce on.
