That's wonderful Twm. I'd just recently decided to call my new campervan Myfanwy. I was aware of the song of course, having grown up in the Valleys, but discovering the history of your legend has brought more pleasure and I'm super proud that Myfanwy will be touring the roads of Ireland (where I live now) very soon. Diolch yn fawr.
You should be! He was the best all round Welsh entertainer ever - Singer, songwriter, musician, actor & comdedian. I was only 14 when he died but I never forget him & I never tire of playing 'Ryan at The Rank' Vol 1 & 2. Absolutely, brilliant he was!😊
As an Englishman living in Wales I was asked many years ago to accompany some friends to a show in Swansea Grand . It was billed as a Welsh variety show and if I’m honest I did not much fancy it. Ryan Davies was the compère and star. The first half was excellent but the second half, which was basically a one man show by Ryan, was amazing. The late great Bruce Forsyth was lauded for his versatility, but believe me he could not hold a candle to Ryan Davies. Comedy, singing, dancing , playing a variety of instruments you name it he did it. What a star. What a loss.
Duw, listening to this has taken me back to my initial police training at Cwmbran in 1974. We had a lad on our course with a fantastic voice and he could bring the students' bar to total silence of an evening when he stood up to sing Myfanwy. Listening to Ryan singing it has just sent a tingle right down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. Diolch.
i can't believe this song has only 48 hits' should be 1,000,000 hits..... only one to sing this with the gentle ness it requireds................ luv it...xx thx swanseagrand 4 posting .........
have to hear this once in a while because its the best solo rendition of it I have ever found. Most likely because of the personality, character, and voice of the legendary Mr. Davies. But he personalizes the song, and makes it his own. A wonderful talent.
As an Englishman I have just by chance come across this recording of Myfanwy and also the first time I have heard Ryan Davies . This is one of my favorite Welch songs . All I can say is TERIFIC
Ryan Davies was a super voice of Wales- pure talent - no stupid arrangements!!! Just a simple wonder!!!. I have su ng Myfanwy in Parry's cottage- not many Irish have done that- what an honour!
My mother adored Ryan, and went to see him at The Top Rank in Swansea. They met, and chatted, and he signed her programme. She cherished that programme until the day she died, but Ryan was long gone before her. I also met him briefly. He was a very funny man, a great entertainer, and a proud Welshman.
who in their right mind would dislike this?? 16 people who either have a dislike for the Welsh language or have lived a very sorry existence! I really feel for you all! This song and indeed this version blows me away every time I listen to it, without exception! I completely agree too with the statement made that this is the greatest love song ever written :)
I dont think I've heard any rendition of any song that comes as much from the heart as this does, and that is what makes it so special. Incredible performance
I am proud to say that my mother was born in Wales, and although I have never lived there permanently, it is without doubt where I belong. It is home. Thankyou for posting and letting me hear this beautiful voice. Reminds me of the people waiting for me, both over the border, and a little further away. Deeply moved and glad I'm not alone in this. Nos da Ryan x
I have fond childhood memories of Ryan, who was a much loved friend of my parents. My father Alex Johnstone was the drummer at Swansea Grand Theatre for many years and shared happy times with Ryan doing the pantomimes. A tragic loss that a man with such talent, who was such a genuine person in an industry where many are not, should have died so young. God bless and nos da, Lisa x
I was lucky enough to see Ryan live on stage at Ruthin during Eisteddfod week back in the 1970's. We had always enjoyed him on TV, and to see him live was even better. Such a talented man, I remember him singing, playing the harp, telling stories and he did the most amazing quick change act I've ever seen. I shall never forget you Ryan, you were taken from us far too soon. Diolch am fod mor cofiadwy. Cysgwch yn dawel.
I had the pleasure to work at Swansea Grand Theatre when Ryan (and Ronnie) appeared there, to see a panto audience sitting in absolute silence while he sat on the edge of the stage singing Myfanwy was an experienc never to be forgotten.
My father was not a great lover of music, but he loved Ryan, and this was one of his very few favourites. He passed away in January 2020, at the age of 89 and, at his cremation in the February, this was one of the 3 songs I chose for the service. Absolutely amazing.
There will never be anyone with the talent of dear Ryan. He had a fantastic singing voice, his humour was second to none and I feel so lucky to have witnessed his talent. I will treasure the memory of this fantastic performer always. God bless him.
ianto a superb soaring voice heart in every syllable, resonating with love and passion. To hear him sing is to be touched by the sublime. Taken too young, the world is darker but rejoice we heard him.
I had the privilege of seeing Ryan in cabaret on many occasions and this was the last song I ever heard him perform. It still brings a tear to my eye and I hope his memory will never be forgotten. RIP, you were a real genius and superstar.
When Ryan describes it as 'the greatest love song that has ever been written in any language..' he is telling the truth. If you don't understand Welsh seek out the translation. Absolutely heartbreaking!
i do not know why i love this....i have no welsh heritage...irish yes....but this really moves me, no matter who sings it......i cannot even begin to understand the language....but wow....this is awesome
What a touching tribute to the wonderful Ryan Davies...I met hime twice when I was a young boy & on both occasions he was so nice to me...I was 13 when he died & I remember delivering the Evening post & read the headlines...I felt as though I had lost one of my family...You were right during your wonderful video...he has never been replaced! AND NEVER WILL...Thank you for sharing this
I had the Privilege of Knowing Ryan when he lived in Cardiff as Bethan Arwyn and Ryan and His wife lived with in a stones throw of where I lived. Now ironically I now live a few miles from Croydon where he use to Teach with his welsh headmaster friend. he Touched everyone whom he met ! and was an all round entertainer no smut just pure genius even now all these years have past I miss Him his singing and his Humour! Bethan, Arwyn, if you ever read this we Miss your Dad
This is the voice of an Angel. You can forget Charlotte Church. No forcing. Just natural and from the heart. You just cannot teach that. "End Of" as they say nowadays.
I was lucky enough to have been a pupil at St John's in Shirley, Croydon when Ryan was teaching there in the 1960s. As you can probably imagine, 'Mr Davies' was a very popular teacher! It was always fun when he was teaching. Music sessions were briliant, even if I did always end up with a triangle when I wanted the symbols! Harpists used to come in & play to us too, this was surely Ryan's influence. I remembered him fondly as I was growing up, I had no idea that he had left teaching & was very surprised when he appeared on the TV in Ryan & Ronnie. He lived in the next road to us & I remember my Mum sending me round to his house with a card & some flowers when one of his children was born. I'm sure that he is remembered with great affection by all who were fortunate enough to have meet him.
I never met him....or Ronnie. Here in Wales at the age of eight, I would watch them both in black and white speaking a language I didn't understand ; yet laugh out loud because they were funny. Their humour crossed the language barrier. When I was fourteen , Ryan died. I was extremely saddened by this news. I'm now pushing sixty. Ryan Davies has yet to be replaced here in Wales. He never will be.
I used to live in Shirley and had no idea that Ryan taught at St John's. I met him at stage door of the Grand Theatre in Swansea and got his autograph; he waa lovely, very funny and wrote "Cofio yn hapus" on my programme. I treasure that brief chance, as a teenager, to say "thank you, you made me laugh so much". Thank you so much for for this information.
As a child I saw Ryan in all 5 Pantomimes at tha Grand theatre in Swansea. He also did a show at the Loughor Welfare hall and he sang Myfanwy to me. I must have been about 5/6 at the time. Such a lovely man.
I was born in Tumble in 68. My parents always had the Ryan at the Rank on, guess it kinda stuck with me, then welsh pride was at it's greatest. The one line which will always make me smile, is when Ryan thanked Mr Rank for the use of his hall, we had so much pride back then, Max,Ryan, cabaret's in the local Rugby club etc, now I live in Newcastle and all they gave us was Ant n Dec.. And the English say were slow. Imagine Ronnie and Ryans Saturday night takeaway.
this was played at my nans funeral and we played this for her on the last days of her life. this brought a tear to her eyes even though she could not speak. this song is beautiful. x
This has to be the best sung version of this Beautifully poignant song, it`s so haunting, What a singer, what a song, Amazing. So sad a loss, but certainly not forgotten.
Why is it anger, O, Myfannwy, that fills your dark eyes; And why do your gentle cheeks, O, Myfannwy, not blush upon seeing me? Where is the smile once on your lips, which sparked my foolish, faithful love? Where is the sound of your sweet words which saw my heart race after you? Myfannwy, may you be all your life, under the shining midday sun. And may the bloomed rose of health dance a century upon your cheeks. Forget all of the promises you made to someone, fair maiden. And give your hand, gentle Myfannwy, to do no more than say, 'Farewell'. the health in the sixth line can be substituted with youth or youthfulness. The Welsh version is much nicer to read. Oni fynwch fyned yn waeth nag anifeiliaid, mynwch addusg yn y Gymraeg.
this beautyfull rendition was played recently at my dear mother's funeral service...i miss you Mam so much and forever you are in my heart....my mother's name was Jane Myfanwy
I had the great pleasure of seeing Ryan in Babes In The Wood when I was aged 7 (1977) I can still see him now, wearing a girls blonde wig , in plaits that curled up at the side.I now watch his son on Pobol Y Cwm (he plays the part of Mark) and I often wonder if he can sing like his dad.Cried my eyes out watching this video.Nos da Ryan, cariad.
"You know what, I think I was there in 1972 / 73 watchng Cinderella in the Grand." My sister and I got up on the stage with him. We, and a few other volunteers, provided a "backing-track" for one of his songs. We played various instruments whilst Ryan gripped his larynx with his fingers, and oscillated his voice-box to the tune of "The Blue Danube" . I remember it vividly, although I was only 6 or so at the time. Fond memories of a uniquely gifted and lovely man.
I do like the pictures of this man's life, so great he was. I can't help but come back to his songs in the sadness of the nights that are so long and think of the fact that sweetness, tenderness and intelligence is so superior and helpful to the soul compared to the bare and raw noisy bellowing or emoting that I hear so much today.
I have to come back to this ever so often, both for the song, and for this wonderful performance. I have had most recently the feeling that this song imparts, of being left by a beautiful girl, but at the last word, she stayed. It brings more tears than as if she had really said "farwell" as Myfanwy does in this song. What a shame so few got the opportunity to take joy in this great talent of a man.
I had the good fortune to see Ryan in Dick Whittington at the Grand - the funniest pantomime I ever attended. I also once saw him buy a pack of cigarettes in a grocer in Oystermouth. He brought the whole shop to a standstill, roaring with laughter.
Ryan & Ronnie was Required lunchtime viewing in our house, First rate Comedy & Pathos plus used to look forward to the rare vocals as well. brilliant entertainers and I we were extremely sad when we heard of his passing. So many bright lights of Entertainment have been snuffed out prematurely over the years. Thank you so much for uploading this great track with the extra bio information
its been a year since i commented on this, but have to say Mr. Davies technique is so flawless, tender, and true, I have tried so hard to sound like him. It seems that only this song has such purity and sweetness, and tenderness in the voice that is also gripping is so hard to do. Mixing words of rejection with a beautiful sound is so unique, I enjoy this performance tremendously, makes me want to sing it over and over myself.
I first heard this song last Sunday on 'Cerys on 6' . It is so beautifully sung and very moving, I was a wreck. Thank you Cerys Matthews for playing it.
The most beautiful song ever .. it makes me cry every time, and brings back wonderful memories of my parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles who are no longer with us .. my Welsh heritage is the best gift I ever received!
I lived in Oystermouth in 1975, and I saw him regularly in the newsagents (John Menzies) there. Swansea Grand Babes in the Wood was the only time I saw him live, but of course he was on the TV and radio all the time. He was completely irreplaceable - but John Cale also does an unforgettable Myfanwy.
Oh dear God... I've loved this song for years, and I even named by own cat 'Myfanwy', so how did I never hear this version until now? His rendition broke me... recent rejection probably didn't help! :p In any case, diolch yn fawr iawn for uploading. :)
He sang this in Swansea at the Top Rank Suite. I got the CD and the old Record :D. Great singer, I love to sing this piece. The greatest love song in the world!
Mr. Andrew! I agree! Absolutely heartbreaking! I wonder about the poor people who dislike this wonderful interpretation, although I would have wished myself Mr. Davis would have sang all three verses of this wonderful song! In my opinion the missing second one is very important! Anyway, Diolch yn fawr, Mr. Davis! Walther
Grampa and Nanny 💫 Our world ... we miss hearing your voices😢 Nanny, your comforting words of wisdom and always with care ❤️ Gramps when you sang this favourite beautiful welsh song, whistled with the birds in the garden and point out the “At one time “which one of the many different species of butterflies it was 🦋
Ryan is my grandad and whilst i never got the chance to meet him he will always be close in my heart and i am proud to be called has grandson ❤

A very rare talent indeed 😊

No other Welsh person could sing the greatest love song like Ryan Davies, what a sad loss it was when he passed away.

This is not only the best song but was sung by the best person to sing it. It still makes the hairs stand up every-time I hear Ryan sing it.
I cry when I hear Ryan singing this touching song. I really love it thanks to a true Welsh man.

Probably people who listen to the catawalling that they call singing and music that you hear today.
This song and man makes me cry every time I hear it. God bless him we all loved you Ryan Esther Annette Davies.

Great singer. One of the best who sings this song.
I wish there was more of Ryan on TH-cam.

My favourite version of this this great Welsh tearjerker. My mother met him at the Top Rank in Swansea, and she talked about him for years.

Why do the talented die so young, such a brilliant singer and entertainer and so missed.
Why is it anger, O, Myfannwy, that fills your dark eyes;
And why do your gentle cheeks, O, Myfannwy, not blush upon seeing me?
Where is the smile once on your lips, which sparked my foolish, faithful love?
Where is the sound of your sweet words which saw my heart race after you?
Myfannwy, may you be all your life, under the shining midday sun.
And may the bloomed rose of health dance a century upon your cheeks.
Forget all of the promises you made to someone, fair maiden.
And give your hand, gentle Myfannwy, to do no more than say, 'Farewell'.
the health in the sixth line can be substituted with youth or youthfulness.
The Welsh version is much nicer to read.

I so miss Ryan and Ronnie. They were so funny.
What a lovely song and a great singer
I do like the pictures of this man's life, so great he was. I can't help but come back to his songs in the sadness of the nights that are so long and think of the fact that sweetness, tenderness and intelligence is so superior and helpful to the soul compared to the bare and raw noisy bellowing or emoting that I hear so much today.
That's a very good song
An amazing talent for entertaining everyone. I listen to this album at least twice a year. Still hugely missed after all these years. Thanks Ryan.
He never will be replaced.
He will never be replaced. God bless you Ryan bach.
Wow ive just been blown away what a beautiful voice this must be the best rendition of myfanwy-many thanks.
I have to come back to this ever so often, both for the song, and for this wonderful performance. I have had most recently the feeling that this song imparts, of being left by a beautiful girl, but at the last word, she stayed. Must like it. Myfanwy was my mother's name. Beautifully sung.
To all Welshmen around the World, the greatest love song ever and yes i'm very bias, sorry
Amen.
What a beautiful voice.❤🏴🙏
the most amazing song i've ever heard, sung beautifuly by a master - shame he was taken from us so young
Truly great. The best rendition ever.
Gone but never forgotten. R.I.P. Ryan.
This is the only interpretation that brings tears to your eyes thank you ryan
What a great voice this man had.
I have learnt this on my guitar, Im Welsh and love it. I have never heard it being sung like this before...........goosbumps.

He was completely irreplaceable - but John Cale also does an unforgettable Myfanwy.
Superb rendition and in fact the best!
if god had passion, it would look like ryan, what an amazing performer in any language, and yes he's welsh
Quite simply breathtaking by a very talented gentleman.
Oh dear God... I've loved this song for years, and I even named by own cat 'Myfanwy', so how did I never hear this version until now? His rendition broke me... recent rejection probably didn't help! :p In any case, diolch yn fawr iawn for uploading. :)
what a beautiful, beautiful voice. It is such a lovely song.
He sang this in Swansea at the Top Rank Suite. I got the CD and the old Record :D.
Great singer, I love to sing this piece. The greatest love song in the world!
Beautifully sung!
Loved him on tv in Ryan and Ronnie, 'don't call will on your father!'! Never realised he had such a fabulous voice,!

"Don't Call Wil on ewe father"

Hilary Hill
Beautiful.moving..the greatest love song ever..diolch ryan
Mr. Andrew! Davis! Walther
That came straight from his heart - still very much missed
Many great singers have sung this beautiful song. But not like this the best interpretation ever it's his song and will always be
