  • Hi There,
Well its been a minute! Thank you to all of you who reached out, I appreciate you. In this video I first explain where I've been for the past 7 months. If you want to skip this then just forward on to 1:57. This is where I talk about my first direct negative comment. I was completely unprepared, however, it also gave me a really good giggle after and I soon realised that not everyone is malicious when being negative. I hope you find this video helpful please comment, like and don't forget to subscribe and remember.... Grey Is Okay x

I find it amazing that in our culture, women feel entitled to comment on each other’s bodies in a negative way - mostly older women. I’m also Punjabi so I know🙂. It’s good to laugh it off but also address it. It can affect us adversely. I’m so pleased and inspired that you are affecting change. Women should root for each other! Redefine what beautiful means. You’ve given me strength to continue with going silver. I think beauty should be authentic, honest. Love ❤️

I had SO many negative comments that after two years growing out my gray hair, I colored it again. I instantly regretted it. I’m starting all over again with the grow out. So many women were rude to me. The comments were breathtaking, crushing, and they made me feel embarrassed for who I was. I felt like I needed to pretend to be younger (even though hair dye doesn’t fool anyone) and I was told basically that it wouldn’t be good for my relationship to look so old. I was also told “you were so beautiful before why did you do this”. Hopefully I am stronger this time around

So funny. I agree...generational thing. I am 50 and just decided to stop coloring my hair 2 months ago (In part thanks to encouragement from beautiful silver women like you on TH-cam!) My mom's (79) reaction was "Oh no! You're too young! Don't do it!" While my 12-y.o. daughter was like, "oh, ok, cool" (like, so what? She sees lots of young people on TH-cam and Instagram with all colors of hair, including gray or silver, so it's truly no big deal to her). Just so funny. You're right, have a laugh about it.

It's definitely a generation thing! You're right, they just don't get it, no filter, or in denial. I'm 45, loving my age (honestly I don't really understood why people want to stay young), I feel much more confident & joyful. I am growing my grey out now & chopping my hair to donate it in the next few months. I'm scared & excited to see what it will look like when I finally do it..and I definitely expect comments!!

Well, as a South Indian woman in your age bracket, I get it. You were a huge inspiration for me, not seeing many Indian women my age growing out their grey hair. I can say, objectively, that you are quite beautiful. I'm sure all of us had a different kind of beauty in our youth, as you said, not just women but men too. But that beauty changes into something still beautiful, but different. And as someone else warned me about growing out grey hair, be prepared that other people's negative comments are about how they feel about themselves, not at all about you. And I'm glad you're back!

Loved this story and how you dealt with it.
I get what you were saying about how she didn't mean it unkindly, but I think I'd have been tempted to say something like "Oh, I see you're still dyeing your hair, poor you, that must be such a chore" or something along those lines.
That way you could get across that if she's going to comment on your appearance, you can feel free to comment on hers, and see if she get it. That actually it's not really ok to comment on someone's appearance if it's not a positive comment, without giving the other person a chance to have their say too.
Might work, might not, but maybe she'll think twice next time, who knows?
For what it's worth, I think you are still stunning.

I get what she is saying... we remember ppl (celebrities, friends from past) as they were and compare them to that which isn't fair. But your gray hair isn't just okay .. it is incredible and you are gorgeous! My mom is also horrified that I am even considering letting my grays go. Im sure I will get similar comments.

You look Stunning in grey hair! You look spicy ,hot and very feminine in my opinion !
Im 37 this year and 1,5 months on the path of goin back to my colour....Its quite spontanious decission but i've been Fed up with going to hairdressers waisting money and time. Simply not enjoy it.... Started coloring my hair myself.... but feel fed up with grey roots. I' ve been already with my not colored roots for over one month.... and saw your video. My thought was.... Why didnt even occur to me ....that I could look even better with my on hair. I feel I may look even younger and better with silver strands:) please keep motivating !!!
Funny thing is ... i always thought sillver hair make us older.... but browsing Photos with natural silver hair ... i totally change my mind, I find it opposite!!! I on the other hand understood that aging is part of us, natural part we should not be ashamed of.... Women look natural, kind of elegant and edgy, unique! I also think that natural silver is unable to copy by hairdresser ... natural is the best. Thank You for your work ! 🥰

Great to see you're back👍🏼❤. You're beautiful and your hair is stunning. Just wanted to say, those comments are definitely generational and I can wholly empathise. After 30 years of dyeing, I recently stopped and transitioned to grey, and I love it! However, I received loads of negative, unwarranted opinions from the older generation. These really hurt at first but then I gradually learnt to ignore them. One aunt who I had invited round to dinner actually said 'you look so ugly now - it's horrible, you look horrible, what have you done, I hate it. Go and dye your hair back!!'. I was in shock ( and had not asked for anyone's opinion). Thankfully I'm over that now. I still think the older generation within our culture has a long way to go in accepting our decision on our hair. Personally, I'm proud of my grey hair and receive compliments on my hair colour now more than before! I've always been independent- minded so going grey wasn't a big decision for me either. I also make sure it's well maintained with great products and a short choppy bob (that suits me), along with a modern and edgy style and bright pink/ red lipsticks. Anyway, just wanted to let you know, you're not alone here. You just keep doing you and go with what you're head and heart are telling you! Your videos are fun and it's great to see a fellow punjabi sister showing the way 🙏🏼👩🏽‍🦳❤❤

You have given me encouragement, I am almost your age and have similar skin tone and hair colour and texture, been going grey since around age 12, I have very narrow forehead and if colour my thick hair I look like as if am wearing a wig, so I think if I let my grey grow out my face will look somewhat visible. I know negative comments, once a guy came to fix my hot water and called me "auntie" and kept calling my husband "bhaji" and this guy was around 27-28 and "I was like lets colour my hair again," but no I persisted, cant be bothered with it really...You look beautiful and in fact younger than if you were to colour your hair, I feel dark hair shows our fine lines and this one looks so cool..

I love all the Silver Sisters I'm finding on TH-cam... I started going grey at the roots when I was 23, at the time my natural hair colour was darkish brown so I was touching up the roots every 3 weeks. At 40 I decided to go lighter so the grey wouldn't be such a contrast. After having the colour stripped out to a strawberry blonde I was able to stretch the root touch up's out to 4 weeks... I'm now 67 and 2 months into transitioning to grey/silver.
I'm told I don't look my age and consider myself lucky not to feel it... I think what I'm trying to articulate here is that it doesn't matter what age you are, transitioning to grey it is a big step! I'm sorry to hear this lady (around my age) was inconsiderate with her comments toward you, malicious or otherwise. I can assure you there are many in my generation who are with you all the way and would not have thought that way let alone voice it. I truly believe we all have a choice (at any age) on how we speak to others; family, friends or strangers... it boils down to the attitude we chose in the moment.
I'm so lucky to have a very supportive partner who loves the women on the inside... I'm almost certain he wouldn't care if I had rainbow coloured hair as long as I was happy 💞😂. I hope you don't let this negative comment get you down, you are amazing and authentically beautiful inside and out... keep up the great work, awakenings can be tough! 💜💕

❤️ I embraced my grey over lockdowns and haven’t dyed it since Feb 2020. I love it so freaking much and enjoy hearing from other women who have done the same - so was looking around TH-cam and found your video!! I know it’s hard to hear comments like that - even when you know it isn’t malicious and when you can laugh about it - I know for me personally there’s still a part of you that can take it to heart. I think it’s definitely a generational thing. I personally have yet to receive a negative comment (other than the occasional “that’s your natural color?!? You’re too young!” - I don’t really feel that’s negative tho) - mostly I get complimented on it! But it’s funny, because years ago I tried the whole dying my hair silver trend (when I probably could’ve just stopped dying it then and achieved that look lol) and a friend’s sister said “ugh why would you want to look old like that - that’s awful.” So I’m sure at some point I’ll get a negative comment too! Anyway, you’re gorgeous and I love the art behind you. Will definitely check out more of your videos!

I totally agree, my inlaws are still dying theirs. Where as I started off with "spending so much on and instructing my hairdressers to put silver highlights in" but nobody understood except WOW Hairdressers, even then u can't get the correct colours where u want them. Its been 5yrs now to the day I transitioned and still battle with the hairdressers. The transitioning part is quite hard as the roots grow out even with the highlights - so be prepared. I found the Indian hairdressers less helpful they just don't listen to what you r trying to achieve but still take all the money, where as u can go back to other hairdressers and get corrections - its hard.

  • @Purplenpinkk

It's crazy, because I didn't think you were in your 40s, at all. Every time I see you, all I can think is how beautiful and young you look, and how amazing you look with your gray hair. So, I'm 53, and I totally get what you are saying about not really feeling or realizing that being in my 50s is a long way from my 20s and 30s. I have some gray hair and aging role-models. One of them is Jamie Lee Curtis the actress. When things come up like the story you tell here, I just think about her attitude towards aging - if you don't know anything about her, look her up. Jamie Lee is such a positive role-model on how to have a healthy, balanced and positive perspective on accepting where you are in the aging process. She is so smart, lovely, she looks great and so comfortable with herself. This is what I aspire to. I don't want to say too much on the family friend, because I have so much compassion for her and the fact that her comments do reflect that clearly she struggles with aging, and mourns that as women we do age and we change. She was clearly longing for those days for herself and you by repeating the line, "She used to be so beautiful." so many times. It's like she's really saying, "I used to be so beautiful." Like she is sad that we have to age and change. But, change is the one thing we can count on and it's up to us to find the beauty in that change.

This is something my Nanna probably would do. I remember her telling me she thought my partner had 'put weight on', she didn't realise he could hear her, I was mortified but I know she didn't really have much of a filter so l just tried to soften the blow(!) Infact, just recently someone told me something she said about me that was quite hurtful too..
I hope I don't get that way when I'm older!
But yeah, there's others in my family who will happily be rude and it feels like deliberate meanness. I find I've distanced myself from that, it's just not my way and I don't appreciate it.
I'm glad you took it the way you did, I find getting older can be hard to adjust to at times, without the added rudeness. We are all changing, we age quicker in our 40s + so I think it's nice to be kind and keep our thoughts to ourselves at times.
    Imo your beautiful x

My auntie is 83 and she still gets her hair dyed red every few weeks. She's very hip in her clothing, makeup, etc but there's something kind of desperate, to me, seeing her try to hold onto something to that degree. About twelve years ago she had a chemical peel on her face. She still works in retail even! But in my mind, I think she could rock her white hair.

I don't often comment on YT videos, but this strongly resonated with me! As a fellow Indian (and Punjabi), I've experienced this sort of thing exactly. There was a summer when I spent a lot of time outside (protesting cruel treatment of animals) and when I went home to see my parents, one of their (Punjabi) friends asked how I'd become so dark (!!!). There are unabashed comments about appearance. It's a weird outlier in a culture that otherwise seems to value kindness and compassion (I was raised in Canada, so my experience *in India* is limited). Anyway, I love your channel and really appreciate your tips, honesty & insights.

You are beautiful! I just saw one of your videos for the first time and thought "she is a stunning beauty". I had a very close person to me tell me that I will grow old and will lose my looks. I was hurt. It's like, can't women be beautiful after a certain age??? Or does just this person not think of older women as attractive? I personally, find many older women to be very pretty. I think it's media that presents the ideal and their ideal is false. I decided to go grey after I saw a woman at a sporting event. She had these ribbons of grey hair woven between black strands. I thought it looked elegant and real. God bless real aging women!

Thank you for sharing. Its your journey to embrace not anyone else's. Be bold, fearless, and unapologetic💜. I'm in the beginning of letting my gray hair grow out and researching different ways to go through this process. I love the idea one day and done😃. I'm shiney white all over, I'm surprised how shiney it is and my is medium length (above shoulders). My hairstylist says my hair is very healthy. My question is... How much damage does the process do the hair and how long does it take to repair the damage?

This is my first time seeing you and I was thinking how beautiful you are. And that was before you said what the woman said. Some people have very little emotional intelligence. She is the one with the issue, not you. I say, "If someone else's view of me means more to me than my own view of myself then there's a problem." I also believe that these kinds of comments show that what you do bothers them more than it bothers you. Again, they're the one with the problem.

Your hair looks cute. My hair is graying in the same areas. What bugs me is when I'm wearing my hair kinda centered and sorta flat, and there's those couple of grays just sticking right up like 'hello everyone.' I had been pulling them out but I'm gonna stop.
Has anyone experienced gray hair that turned back to the natural color from the root? I'm talking like 1-3 inches of grown gray, then back to natural. Absolutely no dyes. I kind of feel like eating true dark chocolate daily may have contributed to that. It does contain antioxidants! I've been slacking for months and coincidentally, I've been getting way more grays. 🤔

I admire you for being able to accept the negative comment with such kindness and equanimity. However, we also have to remember that the comment that was made to you comes out of the subconscious programming we all receive in patriarchal societies that, for women, beauty is equated with "youth" and, even though it is silly because I've read stories by some women who started having gray hair at the age of twelve, gray hair is currently coded in Western societies as "not youthful." Patriarchal societies tend not to recognize mature beauty as being just as beautiful as youthful beauty, but, guess what? The only thing that will change that is for women to decide that they will redefine beauty for themselves and other women to include having gorgeous silver hair at any age--once that happens, women will not color their hair because of societal pressure, and everyone will start to see the many different kinds of mature beauty that women have WITH their natural silver hair. Thank you for being one of those pioneers! (We also should remember that there are chemical companies that spend many millions of dollars every year on advertising to shame women into dyeing their hair. Why? Because those chemical companies make lots and lots of money from that.)

We are the change sister, redefining beauty standards, one silver strand at a time ! It is not just the men however, women can either encourage or take other women down. Its sad when the choose to do the first. x

    • @divinemotherwisdom6611
      @divinemotherwisdom6611 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TheGreyIndian You are, sadly, correct--women as well as men have had their minds conditioned in negative ways by patriarchy, causing some of them to not be supportive of other women at times. Positive change is happening over time, though.

You know us Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi people’s childhood hair rituals 😊
how we are so used to putting oil like mustard and coconut oil in our hair since childhood. Which hair oil is good for grey silver tone. I am worried now putting oil will make my hair brassy or yellowish.
