That would be so cool if it does work (which it probably won’t) because if it did then they would put that stuff on houses all across the USA 😂
I'm actually really excited for this to be tested. If it works, this technology could be revolutionary. Rather than just warning people in the path of these storms, we could just outright stop the tornado dead in its tracks.
It might fail, but it's damn well worth trying to see if it's even possible.

I would also like to see if stopping a tornado is possible. In nature, Saharan Dust stops the formation of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean because of the drying effect it has on the atmosphere. This dust also weakens hurricanes that have already formed and sometimes causes them to fall apart and dissipate entirely. Both hurricanes and tornadoes need moisture in order to form and operate. I believe this dust may have the same effect on a mesocyclone that has yet to produce a tornado or on a tornado that has already formed.
It would definitely be worth a shot.
@@TimothyLatiolais Undoubtedly So! But, it probably won’t happen for years yet. There’s still a lot of testing and trials and all the other stuff too. I’d really like to be apart of it someday. Whether on an already established team, or one of my own doing. Either way it will be a lot of work and fun
Yup, the rodeo scene made me go “they’d all be watching radar on their phones for hours, they wouldn’t be surprised!”

@@titusseptim The F4 that sideswiped them and went on to slam Wakita and Aunt Meg. One thing for sure (I haven't seen the movie yet) that is correct with the rodeo is that nocturnal tornadoes do take you by surprise because they lurk in the dark, and unless there are power flashes or an abundance of lightning, you won't see that beast coming.
True they should have been more aware, although look how quickly Joplin developed.
Well maybe nothing intense was forecast, or it rapidly strengthened. Do people suddenly forget how unpredictable nature is?

While watching the film the other evening, I was thinking “oh, how cool it would be to sit next to Reed and have him provide a running commentary on each scene.” This was the next best thing!
You can watch his live streams on TH-cam when he's storm chasing. Unfortunately, he get super-hyper and starts shrieking into his microphone, which (for me) distracts from the experience. But he has a lot of fans out there and I still watch him if the guys I usually follow aren't out on the hunt.
That would be a blue-ray exclusive.
I just saw it today, I think like me, Reed would have been rolling his eyes at some of the scenes. It was a decent movie though, prefer the characters and the ambience of the original though. Had some funny moments too.

I don't think that moisture-absorbing material will do anything much to weaken a tornado. What I thought of, is lots of powdered CO2 released into a tornado. The CO2 is heavier itself, but more importantly, it's very cold, and so will slow down the updraft.

good to know Twisters has real Storm Chasers seal of Approval. im actually shocked the standalone Sequel is actually rated higher on Rotten Tomatoes by Critics and audiences more so than the original Film. did not expect that.
@@Punisher6791 I really think twisters is better, at least today. I would totally re-watch both films, but I get a little more enjoyment from Twisters. But Twister is such a classic, it helped boost the sensation of storm chasing and of a disaster movie with characters to care about and root for more than some of the blockbuster disaster films like final destination or something like that. Both Twister and Twisters are great films but the CGI in twisters is great. I don’t want to put the two films against each other, they come from different generations so I think younger people would like Twisters more.

@@Punisher6791 as a regular watcher of twister I was excited but also very skeptical of twisters after seeing the trailer because it seemed they were gonna focus more on getting as much action in as possible and not enough on the science and damage of tornados but I was very pleasantly surprised and I love twisters just as much as twister now!
@SamRK-1000 definitely nailed that one despite be being born the 90s I got way more enjoyment from twisters 2024 I guess it's more relatable then 96 twister
My mom and I are both Team Dominator fans, and there were a few points in the movie that we leaned over and whispered to each other either "Reed would never do that" (like the reckless off-road driving) or "Reed would totally do that" (screaming and hooting from sheer adrenaline). I'll always love the original Twister the most, but the new one was really a fun ride, too! Grats on all the well-deserved publicity you're getting by association. Never stop chasing!

I mean, they brought on a ton of real storm chasers to help on the film so they had some good input albeit they obviously stretch things for fun movie magic
@@ReedTimmerWx Be honest, is that first movie what inspired you to go into this line of work? Because I know a *LOT* of storm chasers got their inspiration from that; if I'd had money- and hadn't been 10 years old when it came out- I might have done the same. I've always had a fascination with tornadoes ever since.

I enjoyed the film. I did notice that they also used some storm chasing phrases correctly in it as well and some of the scenes you could definitely tell they based Tyler's character on Reed.
Also one great thing the movie highlighted was that storm chasers go and help out communities that have been affected if a town has been hit by a tornado.
I'm not a chaser per say, but have always had a passion for weather. I followed storm chasers before they were cool lol. Not gonna lie got teary eyed a couple times in the movie. Wish they would have put in a big dedication to all those who have lost their lives in the storm chasing world. Tim Samaras and others ❤
Finally watched it tonight. I'm currently working on a Meteorology degree, and I really felt that, through all of the disaster movie rule-bending that is needed for a good movie, they really paid tribute to the entire profession, more than before. A lot of homework was done, the visuals were insane, the sound was *horrifyingly* great, and the little bits of real science and real events were awesome to hear. They had a few pretty heavy references, and I'm sure you know which ones, but I'm glad they went there, it had to be shown. All I needed to see was a Dominator -- maybe D5 should be able to drive off the road, and have the plot armor of a Dodge Ram!

That wind turbine (when you were live) was startling. I had no idea they were even in that part of the country. Shows what I know. Also, the snapped parts def showed the force from the storm and that was a freaky storm.
No idea it's really only place they are it's best spot for them since they have no oceans
Tornado Alley/Plains states are cool, in that they have wind turbine fields across the street from oil rigs. I think it’s awesome, because instead of leaning one way or the other, my opinion is we should balance ALL forms of energy. Bring on the windy oil! 😊

@harryparsons2750 I know that I was saying they had no idea wind turbines were in the plains and I said well they don't have a ocean put em in its actually perfect spot with constant wind speeds
@@harryparsons2750 yep, off of Cape Cod MA. They just recently closed some beaches because of the busted of turbine debris that is washing up on beaches. I think that's on Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.
Saw the movie Friday, as soon as Tyler Owens started yelling and drove into a tornado I thought, "Yep, he's got to be based on Reed."

Reed, you know more than most suprise tornados happen!
After an active late afternoon of storms, the radar was finally clear. No storms for miles. Earlier storms long passed. Sometime late at night we finally got kids to bed, all warnings, all watches, done with, or so we thought.
I felt that uneasy feeling, that sense that has saved me once before, but decided to play a game to distract me.
A bit later the power flickered, then the radio goes off with a severe thunderstorm warning. I began to shut down the game and as I get up to shut off the power to our consoles and tv, a tornado warning goes off. It said our area, not far down the highway from us. Radar indicated rotation, heading our way. A suprise thunderstorm with rotation came out of nowhere!
I rushed upstairs to get my 2 kids. By the time we got to the bottom of the stairs, the wind was whistling through the windows and door. Our motion light outside kicked on.
Yet 5 minutes later, it was done. It began to clear up. A piece of siding got lifted but didn't come off.
Our weather vane, its pole snapped.
Fact: Fast moving, less than 10 minute tornados can and do happen.
It's just that no one ever believes us out here, even though the radar picked it up. No one in the next town was alerted, only our direct area was. And our area has 2 radars that overlap at their edges.
I was in a tornado in 2016. The problem is, no one remembers the tornado except the people on my street at the time, even though it was all over the local news. The tornado came down my street, went off into the woods, and dissipated all within about 8 minutes. A few years later my town got hit by a more "normal" tornado, and that's the only one people seem to remember. They talk about "the tornado" as if that was the only one to ever hit the town lol.
@@themanifestorsmind Where we live now, same location as of where the suprise tornado I mentioned above, so where we are, a tornado took a direct hit of a church quite some years ago, I think in the late 60's or early 70's. The steple fell to the ground, multiple damages to trees and other buildings, yet there's no official record of it kept anymore. I went deep looking through all the records for this area, it's not as easy as I thought it'd be. There's officially no records of a tornado hitting the church near us, yet for insurance claims reasons, it would've had to be recorded! There is surving photos of the damages.
And the town near us, there used to be a recorded tornado, it's still recorded in a history book about that town, as their "Only tornado". Yet nothing in the official records can be found. I'm like, HOW?! The damages was surveyed and recorded, why was it removed?
Btw, tornado records can only be removed by 1 department.
And when I was 6 yrs old, I was in a small gym of a childrens home facility place in St. Louis. One afternoon I had that uneasy feeling. I was the only kid who stayed by the exit door and didn't want to play. We did not have cell phones back then, the lady watching us only had a walkie takie, to communicate with the office, and in the office they had poor reception, so getting news was difficult at times.
There was no severe thunderstorm watches, or warnings or any tornado watches either.
My gut knew we should not be in that gym. I kept asking the lady for us to leave. My anxiety got worse when the clouds got dark. I urged her to listen to me, we need to go now! She radioed the office. Nothing. Just as she began to call the kids to come over, the rain, hail and winds blasted open the windows above, like high up on the walls, shattered glass falling down unto the kids as they ran, power flickering, sky swirling dark with green, lightning flashes reflecting off the broken glass and rain on the gym floor.
For being the first kid wanting to leave, I became the last one, to try to help, me and the lady struggled to get the door shut. We start to head towards the stairs to catch up with the kids when full power goes out. Darkness until the red emergency exit lit up.
1 injury required rescuing to get a large tree off a teenager that had fallen on the building, over her bedroom, smashed through her window, while she was in bed, and an ambulance transport for her. The roof of the gym we were in, torn apart.
But the official report from that tornado is gone!!
Reports are being removed for no reason.
Sharing stories of tornado events still needs to be done.

8:08 - This year in Nashville it actually happened. Tornado blew up a Nashville Electric Service Substation and sucked fire into the sky. Probably one of the coolest videos if you look it up

My favorite part was the Bernoulli Effect discussion and Reed recounting his May 3, 1999 F5 tornado experience under an overpass. Valuable information for anyone caught in a life or death situation with a tornado! Excellent work Reed and Brian!
Just watched Twisters at a drive-in, and loved it. I immediately said that wrangler is Reed Timmer! I enjoy watching "disaster" movies, I do not expect reality from them. Love your videos for the reality!
The “We got twins!” tornado reminded me of the 2023 Akron, Colorado tornado
This is probaly my favrite all time movie in history!
Been a massive fan of the franchise since the first movie released in the nineties. I almost became a Storm Chaser because of it. I’m really looking forward to seeing this film. lol
The "Surprise" tornados were the worst part of the film. Everyday Oklahomans would be aware of the weather enough to know they need to pay attention...even moreso for the storm chasers.
To me, that was a flaw with the drive thru scene in the original too.
I took your advice and resisted the temptation to watch this video first, then went to go see Twisters today. Never saw the original, didn't know what to expect, and as someone who's a nerd about stormchasers and tornadoes I really didn't set my hopes too high. But I was thrilled when watching it at how accurate just about everything seemed! After watching this, I was proud that I determined everything that you did, especially the "twin tornado". I knew that right away it was a multi-vortex, and when the two vortices moved apart to become separate tornadoes I wasn't buying it lol. But it was an amazing film and walking out I knew they had to have gotten real stormchasers for advice.
I wonder how you felt about them sheltering in a movie theater. At the beginning they did warn each other that sheltering under an overpass was a horrible idea, but recogized they had no better choice due to their car being about to loft. I was surprised no one mentioned sheltering in a bathroom the whole film, but I was really happy to hear them educate the audience about overpasses and basements.
Thanks Reed! #4 bothered me so much when watching the movie. I’m like, you’re gonna tell me 2 veteran chasers didn’t know an EF-4 was about to just drop on them. Lmao. Ninja tornado. Coming out of nowhere.

When I was watching Twisters, I couldn't unhear Reed screaming "DRIVE!" when they were stuck in the tornado's path. I guess that's what happens when you watch too much Tornado Chasers lol

That was exactly what I thought while watching the movie today with my son! Tyler's souped up truck was a Dominator wannabe! Not that I'm knocking anything, we really enjoyed the movie.

I actually just saw this movie today and for the most part really enjoyed it. They definitely based Powell’s character on Timmer. And I actually pulled up the wind turbine clip to compare with what the movie shown lol
I hope they paid Reed very, very well for basically adopting his persona, his vehicle, his science, etc. for this movie.
This year was crazy , Reed crossed the country chasing like never before.
I agree, this was a great year for tornado chasing. And it's the first time I've really seen a lot of tornado chasers streaming themselves doing it too. Very cool stuff.
The microphysics part is exactly what I have been pondering over enough to start a degree in meteorology through Mississippi state. I would really love to work on this in the future, I know Reed won’t stop until it’s done!
They for sure should've dedicated part of this movie to Reed. During a lot of it I'm like they had to have had inspo from him.

I was really glad to see the actual meteorological knowledge in the script. When both teams are describing basic supercell dynamics and the use of the proper data on radar in certain scenes, it gave it even more of a sense of realness. Aside from the inaccuracies.

I think it’s your knowledge that’s the key element. Early in my watching your channel I watched you find the best possibility for getting out of a tornado. My youngest son got an earful on how truly scary that seemed to me. I really thought you were buying it that day.

3:36 Kinda weird when every other tornado expert says to find a low point point like a ditch. Although if it's an EF5 it's no good anyway with ground scouring potential.
@@tHebUm18 key is a well built overpass. It has to have girders you can get up in between, which are uncommon in a lot of areas. I think ditch has just as much variable. There’s just not science against it
I'd take whatever I could get that wasn't in a flingable vehicle or open land in that situation.

I watched this movie 2 days ago and I knew I’d love it cause I have a strong passion for severe weather. As I was watching the movie, I was thinking about the dominator 3 when I saw Tyler Owens’s truck. Honestly, I think Twisters is my favorite movie of all time.

I have something to add Spoiler Alert
The characters in the opening scene did acknowledged that the overpass was the least safest before taking shelter, but they had no other choice since the tornado was coming in fast
one unrealistic thing is that in real life the wind is capable of blowing out the windows and even like pieces of gravel or dust or even something small can destroy the vehicle's windows, in the movie the windows remain intact despite the winds being over 100 miles an hour, The example of the windows blowing out was in 2013 when the Bettesmobile was about to get hit by a powerful subvortex, the side windows shatters before the camera man took cover and the vehicle got struck
Another one is that tornadoes can form very fast from nothing to large and violent, such as the Joplin tornado, the tornado when from nothing to a multivortex mile wide wedge in like 30 seconds, also the doppler radar at the NWS refreshes every several minutes so that if a tornado suddenly forms as fast as Joplin after the radar refreshes, it will take a few minutes to update the radar, and once it refreshes and radar reported the tornado, it would've might have been to late for those in the first few minutes of its path
Also, if I recall correctly, that sudden increase in size and strength happened in the movie when the tornado hit the oil refinery. It might have been an EF2-lower EF3, but then just suddenly expanded into a monster...
I think I remember seeing footage of that rapid growth, so was contemplating how realistic that scene was in the movie.
The warning for the Joplin tornado went out 17 minutes before touchdown. 17 minutes may be fast, but it's not 30 seconds.
@@jessb9514 oh, but sometimes there can be radar holes, or it happened in a area that was unlikely for tornadoes that night, or the night itself, such as the Cookeville tornado of 2020. Another thing is that in that the scene, people are ignoring the warning because of too many false alarms, or cry wolf too much, also the people were distracted by the rodeo, so they didn't know a tornado was about hit till it was too late.

My family in upstate NY just had a string of 8 tornados go through this past week. Unheard of. SMH. The final one ( hopefully) destroyed two churches, one my parents were married in and later l had been baptised in, several family weddings. It still hurts and I am not even there. laying flat in a ditch is better than an underpass. underpasses also have a higher risk of trapping flying debris.
I really liked the movie, and afterwards my friends and I were just talking about what was realistic about it and what wasn't. This is the perfect video for after the movie and helped answer some of our questions! Thanks Dominator team. Great information.
I read in one of the articles that to do what they did in Twisters, they'd need at least 22,000 tons of absorbing material to dissipate it. Way more than that puny truck could handle.
I could see a modified C-17 Globemaster being used to disperse the materials from above the supercell.

Knew from the moment I saw Owens that he was based off Reed. Been following Team Dominator since I was about 10 years old. Loved the film, and loved the breakdown on real vs fictional.
I started following a couple of storm chasers 2 years ago. Far more entertaining than movies.
I just saw Twisters in the theaters I loved it. I am rating it a 10.
I feel like Tyler was a reference to Reed because of how much they love Tornados and how they go into them for science!
The movie was good and while it had unrealistic scenes, it was still fun. Most notably, people would be under a Tornado Watch all day before a tornado formed for real so you wouldn’t be caught off guard.
Reed and Pecos Hank. The most followed chasers there is lol. Everytime I’m chasing I’ll see atleast 15-20 vehicles follow reed as he leaves 🤣 reminds me of everybody following the “Tornado Wrangler”

That rodeo tornado wouldn't have crept up on me, full time weather nerd here who is always looking at doppler radar, wind speeds etc on my phone / laptop. I'm Australian so don't get many tornados here but we can get some super gnarly storms.
People made bad reviews on how "The movie is not realistic". If it was realistic, it would be just some guys waiting for a storm to pop up and then the strongest tornado they witness that day is max an EF2

In my area of PA just a couple days ago, we had an unexpected tornado. It was warned after a meso was spotted on radar. There was NOTHING at all for even a minor risk assessment from Binghamton NWS Office. Mind you, I've got a degree in the field as well (bc of the og Twister). It was warned, but after the meso was spotted on radar. A funnel was spotted by a civilian also. If it touched down, we had less than 5 minutes warning. So while its unlikely a storm comes by surprise, it easily still can. That being said, Reed, you know as well as anyone that the issue with night tornados isnt the warning going out, its that ppl tend to be turning in for the night. My area in 2018 got a strong EF2 that dropped at 10pm. No one could see it despite NWS Binghamton putting a risk assessment out that day for the area. The warning went out about 30 seconds before I felt the pressure drop over my house. I did some calculations on the storm and figured that the funnel passed directly over my house and dropped in a straight line 1 mile away 5 seconds later. I didnt even get to my basement as a 10pm at night storm. I was literally laying in bed when my phone went off and darted for the stairs feeling the pressure drop and my ears pop. The shopping plaza that was destroyed thankfully had closed in the 9pm hour so all of the parking lots that would have been full during the day, were empty.
It’s probably because of your region. People don’t expect tornadoes on the east coast like they do in the Great Plains.
@tomaslopez2940 Well yea- that's a given but even under Reeds statement, we still should have better assessments for something like that and we dont. So he's like... half right. In areas where tornados are common, they never go unnoticed these days but for my area and most other areas of the world, we can still be taken by surprise. We dont even have sirens here and this area is 75% over 65 years old, most ppl here only have home phone service and if they have cell phones, they arent the best as using them like my mother who's 74. So can twisters take ppl by surprise, absolutely. Just not where he is.

@doublecrossedswine112 I dont work for any weather forecasting agency despite having a degree in the area. The radar indicated the meso which prompted the warning so yea, thats how we knew. But NWS Binghamton which I do look at each morning merely out of curiousity, had no risk assessed for the day. Even the new station mets were caught off guard by it. The warning was radar indicated not risk assessed in the days prior or even that morning. Thats my point, if it weren't for the radar signatures, no one would have known without actually looking themselves or at the sky. Thats my point.
