Hello Diane and greetings from the UK. I began painting about a year ago at the age of 60, and The more I learn the more I realise how much there is to learn. I have just recently discovered your TH-cam channel. I have found your tutorials to be so useful in the fundamentals. ; Many other teachers giving demonstrations seem to forget the beginner. Thank you for imparting some of your wealth of knowledge and skll. you have been a great help to me.helen
Diane, thank you, thank you! This video on values and gradation helped so much to better understand how to use them. Great class. Will apply this to my painting. The best to you.
I have never seen this kind of explanation.. it was wonderful.. it’s something one can come back to it as a lecture of reference.. I am beginner and learning my own.. videos like these they contribute invaluable learning in the life of a beginners like me..thanks you so much. I wish you longevity and good health:)
This undercoat value I need this to a T teacher! I wanna use the silvers and glassbead over and translucent colors with fluorescent and glow in the dark mixed media!!! This is shining light on me thankyou!
Wonderful demo, Diane. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us via Quick Tips! Would love to see you develop that as a painting in gray tones only.
Great tip! Thank you so much Diane. I would love to see this tip combined with the atmosphere effect as objects move further. I would like to understand better how the value goes down and sky color mixes into the distant objects. Ex mountain at different distances trees and ground going into the distance.
How do you keep your paint fresh on your palette being in a box? Love your videos. I’d love some on your set up. I like to be tidy and enjoy how you keep your colors clean.
Brilliant! So glad I finally found the time to get this short video in! Esp liked how value change & value contrast were both explained as working hand in hand - thank u! In re to the video tutorials, is there one or more that go into this dual concept more? Thanks again so much - Adan :)
Hello, thank you for your instruction, it is very helpful. I wonder about: what is the difference between Value painting and Tonal painting? How do they relate? thank you
Alicia, thank you for your request. These Quick Tips are limited in time so that to paint a landscape from scratch would go far beyond our time limit. Here's a solid procedure to follow: (1) Do a preliminary sketch where you block in the major shapes, but without detail (Do the exercise in Quick Tip 44) (2) Separate the composition into shadow areas and light areas (Also Quick Tip 44). (3) Block in colors beginning in the shadow areas, then the areas not in shadow (See Quick Tip 179). We do have full length free video on our TH-cam channel. Search for Notan: How and Why to see it. I use this process in that video. Hope this helps.
I appreciate very much your lesson and I think I did understand. What I didn't understand is how four(?) people gave nolikes. They seem to have most definite problem with understanding value both from color wise and knowledge wise stand of point.
I don't mind the "no likes." There is no way everybody is going to like everything I do, so whether or not the Tip is liked is not a concern. But thanks for that.
2 ways Depth ...space...like a landscape Distance....depth Squint to throw out of focus... Value is gradations in the distance...dark to lighter, the further the lighter You’ll see variations in distance Clover has better contrast, blurry in distance
This is brilliant especially in real time. I love that it's in greyscale. You're a great teacher. Thank you.
Thanks.
you ... i will make you, Dianne Mize, my muse to get back to the easel again. This helps with my Ptsd so much. Eternally grateful.Thank you
Thank you, travene1!
Thank-you! You are a great teacher Diane!
Oh thank you!

Thanks, Helen. My hope for this channel is to provide the basics, one at a time.
Good teacher
And you, Diane. This is very helpful as I learn how to manipulate value to tell the story of my scenes. 🎨🖌👍
I always like knowing these Tips are helpful Thanks.
Thanks so much! This makes so much sense. You always make me excited about painting.
Great.
Diane, thank you, thank you! This video on values and gradation helped so much to better understand how to use them. Great class. Will apply this to my painting. The best to you.
Wonderful. I love knowing when these Tips are helpful.
She kept saying, "but let's just focus on what values create distance".
My focus only went were she led it.
Gotta love her 😄
Pick it up there and take it further.
Just stumbled upon your videos. Great information and explained very well. Will watching more of them, for sure. Thank you.
Enjoy the journey. You have only 240 + at this point, and more to come. 😇
Fantastic quick tip. Great explanation of how value works to convey depth and distance. Excellent.

Thanks!
Thanks, Leslie!!!

Thank you Diane, it seems so obvious once you've pointed it out! It really helps me look more closely and see the difference in values.

I always learn something new from you!! Thank you so much! :)
Always a pleasure.

Hi Dianne, this is great information; really inspiring! Thank you so much! Julie 🥰
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed to get straight in my mind for a painting I’m working in presently.
Music to my ears...
Thank you Dianne. Specifically for use when using mid tones and shadows not necessarily for aerial perspective.
My pleasure, as always.
Thank you so much. God Bless.
Thanks.
Excellent video! Thank you!
Thanks.
That made so much sense. Thank you
You are so welcome

Please see Quick Tip 115 where I answer that. You will find it at th-cam.com/video/RORenwUXMDI/w-d-xo.html

We have an entire series of four lessons called Creating Distance. It's also available in a mini-course.
In the Studio Art Instruction Yay! Can you post the links? Esp to the full series - thanks! :)
Love this demo! Could you do a tutorial similar to this, but using warm and cool colors as you gradate?
I'll put this one on our schedule.
Thank you so much for Sharing!!
And thank you for watching.
Once again, thank you.
Always a pleasure.
this is a perfect companion to the one that came out today! 3/3/21
Thanks.
Thank you I get it! I need to hold on to the keys to achieving it.
Give it some practice on scrap canvas. It's better to master techniques on scrap canvas rather than while doing a painting.
Thank you. This was very helpful.
Great.
Thank you,very informative
My pleasure.
Hello, thank you for your instruction, it is very helpful. I wonder about: what is the difference between Value painting and Tonal painting? How do they relate? thank you
Audrey, there is no difference. The terms tone and value are used interchangeably. Originally, the Brits called lights to darks "tone values".
During a painting I take photos and put them into gray scale to check my values.
Don't we love having the technology to do this sort of thing. Thanks for your tip.
Very helpful, thank you!
My pleasure.
great! THANK YOU!
It's a pleasure.
Thank you
My pleasure.
Hello Dianne. Can you demonstrate how to paint a landscape with trees from scratch? I don't know how to start.

The basic terminology is ‘high contrast’ and ‘low contrast’.
Thanks for adding that. There are several ways of saying the same thing.
Hi Dianne, this is great information; really inspiring! Thank you so much! Julie 🥰
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
