Norm is one of only a handful of people outside of my family and close friends that I genuinely get sad about thinking they won't be around forever. What an amazing asset he has been to this world.
I grew up watching norm as a kid. Im still amazed as i was as a kid. That man has true talent for his craft. New yankee and the woodwrights shop were my all time favorites.
Nice project. Interesting to see that TNYW is still going strong after all these years. I have always admired Norm's woodworking skills since I first saw him working with Bob Vila in episodes of This Old House.
Hey Norm, I went to a Boarding Military Academy from January 31, 1971 to Early June 1973. One of the Cadets' dutys was to be excused from all classes and other dutys for one day each school year to perform the Dutys of Officer of the Day, Sergeant of the Guard or Orderly. Those Cadets sounded all the bugle calls and raised and lowered the US Flag at the proper time each day. I was taught to tie 4 Half Hitches to secure the Flag, after winding the rope on the cleat. Seeing this video brings back memories. Thank You.
I grew up watching Norm from the first time Bob Vila introduced him on This Old House. I then watched probably every episode of The New Yankee Workshop. This man is probably responsible for selling a ton of wood working tools for a lot of businesses. May God bless him and his family always. 🙏🏽🔨🪚
I don’t have the tools or the talent to built a flag pole like the one Norm is building but even so he does inspire me to put up my American flag tomorrow and leave it up and display it proudly. And I urge all proud Americans to do the same. Especially in the state our country is presently in. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
This why Norm is an artist as well as a master craftsman. The only 2 things my dad and both of grandfathers ever agreed on was Charlie Pride and Mr. Norm
There's still people doing stuff like this. For example, Matthias Wandel, here on TH-cam. He's even built a bunch of his own power tools. And he definitely doesn't use dominos. He doesn't even like pocket holes. You've also got people like Frank Howarth, also on TH-cam. He's definitely way better equipped (actually even better than Norm was), but still really good. And amazing at making videos.
This was a great video norm like always and your like the best woodworker and every woodworker I’m sure likes u and your the best and a lot of fun to watch norm!!
Norm, on wooden sailing boats, the main mast shape is exactly how you discribed. Square where it hits the keelson, octagonal where it clears the deck, and round up to the truck. It is not a large truck, since it is at the top of a mast. (Or, what Army people call a flagpole) steve
Before we use any power tools, let’s talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.
There have been at least two taller wooden flagpoles. The tallest ever wooden flagpole in the world at 225 feet was found at Kew Gardens in London, UK, and was fashioned from a Douglas fir harvested in British Columbia; it was taken down due to rot in 2007. Its closest competitor, at Stampede Park in Calgary, Canada, was 202 feet tall, and was also fashioned from a BC Douglas fir; it was taken down in 2001, also due to rot.
"I've used every clamp I have." What?? Norm doesn't have a clamp room? I'd have thought that he would have a clamp hangar, or a warehouse to equal NASAs. steve
Russ had another property on Nantucket which featured a few times over the years and was where several projects ended up, it's pretty much a certainty that's where the flagpole was installed.
I know this is old, but I'm disappointed that Norm bought a cleat from the Internet, he could have bought it from a local marine store on the island, they must have piles of them.

I totally agree 👍
Im always impressed by Norm but this time im also impressed by that beautiful verticle grain lumber!
Man, I haven't seen this show in ages, so glad it showed up in my suggestions. Norm Abram is a National Treasure!
Norm makes a very difficult process seem easy. Norm is a National American treasure. Thank you Norm for years of service.
I grew up watching norm as a kid. Im still amazed as i was as a kid. That man has true talent for his craft.
New yankee and the woodwrights shop were my all time favorites.
There were so many flags around America because this was less than two years after 9/11.
Thanks for your patriotism, Norm.
Yet now, 23 years later there is talk of giving one of those murderers a nominal pardon!
The Iraq war just started
Nice project. Interesting to see that TNYW is still going strong after all these years. I have always admired Norm's woodworking skills since I first saw him working with Bob Vila in episodes of This Old House.
Excellent! So glad to see this one since I didn't catch it when it originally aired!

I always wear my safety glasses. Thanks Norm!

As always, you do a fantastic job. Thank you.

WOW that's a lot of clamps WOW.
My Dads motto " you can never have enough clamps"
No Dominos
No Shaper Origin
It’s a pleasure watching a craftsman ply his trade

I know what this Marine is going to try building over the weekend.
Job well done.
17:04 I'd fill it with cement, not concrete... 😅😊
For those that might get confused, Cement makes concrete
That’s a pretty cool build. Very unique.
Pretty cool Flagpole Norm Abram.
GOOD SEEING YOU AGAIN, NORM!!!
another nice video THANKS
A good patriotic gesture.
This was a great video norm like always and your like the best woodworker and every woodworker I’m sure likes u and your the best and a lot of fun to watch norm!!
Sir, you are a MASTER of your craft. I hope you're well. Thank You.
Norm is a true craftsman and a National Treasure. Imagine what this man could do today if he a a shop full of Festool woodworking machines.
He could do the same stuff… festool stuff is high quality, but nothing revolutionary…
Makes you proud to be American.
Norm, an American Treasure!

Love you Norm

Thanks

Norm certainly is an Americana classic …
Beautiful job, but I'd be tempted to paint the hollow inside to protect it from moisture. Thank you.
That's the tallest flagpole that no one has ever made out of wood, Norm!
There have been at least two taller wooden flagpoles. Wood was way cheaper than steel before the Industrial Revolution. I’d say most flag poles were wood or wood pikes.
30 years ago I made one 6 ft taller. Still standing and holding a flag too.
You can make out of wood a smaller flagpole to attach to the pillar of your house because that’s a lot of wood not knowing how expensive fir is.
I think I’m going to do that! Thanks for the idea!
kids probably have kids of their own now 😅
I think the one who was holding the level was one of Russ's granddaughters.
"You're gonna need a bigger lathe"
2003 "I bought it on the Internet."
Nice catch! 17:30 Lets Go!
Back when what you ordered would actually arrive as described 😂
Match and a bullet in the ball is what is missing. How you would get it if the mast did not pivot?
"I've used every clamp I have."
What?? Norm doesn't have a clamp room?
I'd have thought that he would have a clamp
hangar, or a warehouse to equal NASAs.

I wonder if this flag pole is still there? Anyone know where this is?
He said it's on Nantucket.
Russ had another property on Nantucket which featured a few times over the years and was where several projects ended up, it's pretty much a certainty that's where the flagpole was installed.
It's still there. Needed a paint job, but standing tall and proud.
👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏💪💪💪💪👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
PBS wouldn't let this happen today.
Maybe if it was the rainbow flag

Most likely to share with the audience that if you can’t find it locally that it is available.
Norm !! nice a pole for my trump flags ...
Bob villa sucks
Thanks to Biden/Kamala's inflation I cannot afford to buy any wood.
