I know this is an old video, but I love this video and I’ve re watched it so many times! I just bought some food from hermit grub and my hermit crabs love it! Thanks for being an awesome crab advocate! ❤
I ordered enough from all 3 to last at least 6 months to a year!! Currently have at the very least of 50 different dry foods for them! I have never seen a hermit crab run but they run to their food dish every time.
Hi! I recently rescued 2 hermit crabs. They are both very small, no bigger than a quarter. We set them in a VERY TEMPORARY 2 gallon tank with everything they need according to many of your and others videos. We just got a 25 gallon tank to put them in! I’m afraid the substrate I am using isn’t suitable, but my parents plain won’t buy play sand from anywhere. I am using a mix of the eco earth and this old bio-active sand for an aquarium. If we can’t buy play sand, would sand from a local beach be better, or should we leave out the sand entirely? I also feel like they are not eating or drinking. I gave them some strawberries, carrots, blueberry, and lettuce. Our smaller blue one doesn’t move at all. It’s currently hiding, though the other is very active.
We use live sand in our water pools. We don't have any research for me to answer your question. I can't say for sure if your hermies can safely molt in that type of sand. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful with this.
Very helpful!! I went straight to these vendors and ordered a nice variety. Do you have a video of actually putting these on a dish to serve in the tank? I can't quite figure out how many options and how much to serve for my 9 crabs. I feel like I'm waisting a lot! Thanks!

It really depends on how many crabs you have. They eat very little at a time. Just offer a small amount of different foods from the groups. I'm so sorry you are having a bad experience. We have never had a bad experience with Hermit Grub. They are a small "mom and pop" type store, run from their personal kitchen. Maybe they are having personal health problems or some other life situation causing slower than usual response time. Their product is amazing, but I do understand your frustration.
Can some body commet a bunch of hermit crab food brands because my crabs didn’t like this brand and I’m about out and I can’t think of any good brands for them

What ecological niche, do hermit crabs occupy, to eat so much guano and meats, at the same time? Are they composters, or are they some kind of opportunistic predator? What nutrients are hermit crabs able to derive, from animal waste? Isn't the waste, already nutrient depleted? Is it a probiotic? Can hermit crab waste, be beneficial to a garden? As would vermicompost, or guano? Can you keep composting worms in the same enclosure, as your hermit crabs? Like a bioactive crabitat.
Hi Darren. I love that you are so interested in understanding your hermit crabs needs and the WHY behind them! Hermit crabs are omnivorous scavengers in the wild. Often feasting on the leftovers and decaying matter.... even garabage. One of the atypical things they like to eat is the feces of herbivorous animals, particularly worm castings. They also eat their own feces... clever little dudes cleaning up after themselves, huh? I would definitely classify that as opportunistic! Without enough protein in their diet, however, they will become cannibalistic. I'm not sure you could gather enough hermit crab poop to benefit your garden, for example, we have 43 hermit crabs and we hardly see any poop in our tanks. You can absolutely have a bioactive tank. However because of the closed environment, space, and molting nature of our hermit crabs - you want to be very careful what you add to your tank. Research has shown springtails and isopods to be the most beneficial as well as safe. I hope this helps! If you would enjoy reading into the research behind these findings, head over to www.crabstreetjournal.org. They have some fantastic data!
Calcium is essential for hermit crabs exoskeleton and so exo mix is usually a mixture of lobster and crab shells, egg shells or other items that are high in calcium.
@@CrabCentralStation OK cool. Ty. I knew about the calcium through eggshells, oyster shells, cuttlebones, etc . I'd just never heard exo mix before. Ty for responding :)
Me: Oh, my buggies could use new protein stuff. Me: *spends way too much money on the first site* ...oh... I'll try the other place next time. Is there somewhere I can get a bunch of worm castings that's in a resealable bag? Paul's looks good, but I just don't like that bag.
LOL! I love it! We just poured the bag into a ziolock bag. You could also put it in a jar or tupperware container. We put that dish I poured in the video (the coconut sheldish) of Paul's worm castings in the tank on Monday night and it is about half gone already! Crabs are LOVING it!

@@CrabCentralStation thank you for the reply. I also ordered from just 2 old crabs and am much happier.
FYI there’s no such thing as “Egyptian Worms”🤣
Can some body commet a bunch of hermit crab food brands because my crabs didn’t like this brand and I’m about out and I can’t think of any good brands for them
Can hermies have bird seeds
Yes! Just make sure there are no additives.
Is there any US website that is reliable to buy hermits?
Not that we know of...yet! However, I know Mary Akers is working with a distributor who may begin shipping captive bred babies!
@@CrabCentralStation Ohh that's nice to hear. When will they start to open?
Applications are opn now! Go apply at www.crabcentralstation.com
@@CrabCentralStation I looked at you site, and cannot find where I could apply the application? Can you help me?
On the home page of the website scroll down to where all the buttons are. Click on the one that says "Adopt". That will take you to a different website where you can find the application. I hope this helps!
Can they eat turtle food
If it is single ingredient/whole food - yes. If it has preservatives or added “stuff you can’t even pronounce “ - then no.
hermit crub link doesnot work anymore
Thank you for notifying us!
What is exo mix?
Calcium is essential for hermit crabs exoskeleton and so exo mix is usually a mixture of lobster and crab shells, egg shells or other items that are high in calcium.
@@CrabCentralStation OK cool. Ty. I knew about the calcium through eggshells, oyster shells, cuttlebones, etc . I'd just never heard exo mix before. Ty for responding :)
hermit food hermit food hermit food
We have had a lot of folks asking us what hermit food companies we suggest. We thought this would be a great unboxing to help them out.
Hii could you check out krabooz it’s a company just for hermit crabs
Hi! Why would you like us to check it out?
@@CrabCentralStation I guess that would work. I'm just worried about it getting all over the place when I try to get it in another bag.
