Good question! Yes, they can move the shells around. We find them out of the basket all the time 🤣. If you are concerned, you can always give them a good mix/toss on water change days, or once a week or so.
That was great. Today I learned my humidity is too high because the tank isn't warm enough and I need to move my thermometer/hygrometer. I learn from every video though, so much appreciated!
Hi! I just got 2 hermit crabs last week. As of right now I only have the eco earth substrate as I am having a hard time finding the correct sand. My crabs have been under the substrate ever since I got them. The temp and humidity gets checked constantly so that it is the correct temp. They have salt water and regular clean water. I sit good out every day but like I said, they stay hidden. They are alive as I have checked to make sure. I just don’t know why they are hiding.
Play sand can be found at any hardware store, walmart even had some. It’s pretty cheap, 5 bucks a bag. If your crabs are u see the substrate - do not keep digging them up. I've had my buggos for a few years (the oldest will be 5 in August!) and a video I'd like to see is how to put things up inside the tank. I mostly have suction cups, but most of them fall all the time and the one that doesn't is very bulky. I guess I could silicone stuff to the side, but then it would be difficult to get out if there's an emergency. Do those fake bamboo poles work? This includes having the light inside the tank too. How do I keep it up? Also, I've been wanting to make a second story out of the light cover to put the water pools on (they are/will be two of the smallest critter keeper. I think they hold half a gallon of water each, plush the filters and the rocks for getting in and out.). Because I'm worried about the weight I decided to use pvc pipe too, but I don't really know what I'm doing with making something that's going to have to take a decent amount of weight. I guess my real problem is just making the most of the space. I have a 65 gallon (and it has weird proportions because someone probably made it and trying to make my own lid ended up being a disaster) and 4 bugs (1 E and 3 PPs. One is pretty tiny and one's a jumbo) and I just always feel like they need more room. I want to get a topper, but I'm not sure how to make that work yet.
Great ideas. We filmed a lot of how we made our toppers, including how we attached things. We also have several different projects filmed that we will share with you guys as well. I would definitely use the pipe to help support the light filter shelves. I've seen some folks cut out a space in the middle of the light filter to drop the pools into. Stay tuned for more videos and thanks for letting us know what you hope to see!
@@CrabCentralStation It was great to see how much they like the wheels and how active they can be when happy. Hey! I entered the giveaway, I left a review under the name Miss Mehli for your website. Super stoked to see what else the future holds for you guys!! Love your channel
Any tips for a new owner?? Hey! Love your videos! I just got my first 3 crabs ever! I bought a 29 gallon tank & I’m having a hard time warming it. It has been staying around 69 degrees. I bought a medium size heat mat that claims to warm tanks up to a 40 gallon. However it did not do the trick so I bought a second mat of the same size ( i JUST installed it lol) . I have had these crabs for 3 days & I haven’t seen one of them since I put him in here. I think the temperature makes them want to stay buried. I put out fresh veggies the past 3 nights & they don’t seem to be eating. Are they stressed about the move? Any tips?
Hi Hailey Stone! Welcome aboard Crab Central Station! We are so glad you found our channel ❤! All of my best advice can be found in our videos. I would start with the PPS How to keep my hermit crab alive, then - basic care, food 101, heat and humidity, basic water pools, and substrate. Those are all meeting basic care. As you mentioned, if the tank is too cold, they will be less active and hide.
Hi! I'm new to having hermit crabs (I have 1 medium sized purple pincher named Comet and 1 small Ecuadorian named Macie but mace for short) and I have them in a 10 gallon tank right now, but soon getting a 20-40 gallon, and I had a few questions. First, how deep should their substrate be? Right now it is 4-7 inches. My next is should I use sponges? People have told me all sorts of answers, but I'm using them currently, but clean them once every two days in boiling fresh water. I also have both a salt water, and fresh water dish that they can submerge in, but should I make it deeper? If so, how deep? Also, what are some products you recommend for hides, and climbing, or anything to keep them happy and healthy in general. My two last questions are how exactly do I mix the substrate and sand, and Comet has a shell that is painted and I heard it can be toxic to them? She already had it when I got her, and I was wondering if there was anyway I can encourage her to try one of the non-painted shells I put out for them. It would really help me if you gave me some extra tips too! Thank you very much for having this channel because I realized I had a lot of inaccurate information and I will now be watching these all night!:)
Hi Gamer Kid! Welcome to the Crab Central Station! We are so glad that you found us! First of all, it sounds like you want the best for your new crab friends and I love that! We have a lot of videos that will answer all of your questions in depth, check them out :) 1. Substrate should be 3x as deep as your largest crab or 6" min. You want a 5:1 ration of children's play sand to eco earth. We have a video all about substrate. 2. No sponges in the water. They harbor bacteria and just aren't needed, extra work on you! They can be placed in the tank on the substrate as a part of their natural diet. They will eat the natural sea sponge (nothing man made though). 3. Pool, both fresh and salt, should be deep enough for both of your crabs to fully submerge in. 4. Shells are very important resources for hermit crabs. You definitely want to get 3-5 natural shells for each crab in the correct size and type. Since you have two different species you will be looking at two different types of shells. We have a video called Hermit Crab Shells 101. Watch that it will teach you how to measure, what kind to buy, and where to order them. 5. We actually have a list of our favorite products on our website! It even has all the links for them. Check it out at www.crabcentralstation.com in our Favorite Products tab. We also have great care guides there and awesome hermit crab food companies we like to order from. 6. You didn't ask this question but since you have one Purple Pincher and one Ecuadorian, I wanted to let you know that you will want to try and adopt one more of each species when you get your bigger tank set up. They are social creatures and live in colonies of 100's. Each specie has a different "Language" and they need a species buddy to live with. 7. Finally, Ecuadorian's are considered an exotic species and they live in a much warmer/humid area. They will need their tank conditions to be at a consistent 85 degrees Fahrenheit and 85% humidity. Thank you so much for reaching out to us! Feel free to ask any more questions. We are happy to help. You can also follow us on our instagram or Facebook (both at Crab Central Station) and DM us there. You can always email us as well at crabcentralstation.com Did this help you?
I keep my crabby's tank spotless But the 4 years I've had them and live in pa. When the warm weather comes some how I get a GNAT Issue in there tank I'm very care with there home so nothing can get in But I guess when I left lid 1or2 get in and breed there little white baby things floating only in fresh water bowl not the salt one.Im really can't take it any more is there anyway I can stop this??please help its alot of care to keep up with
Are the bugs flying around in your tank? If so, you can spread some olive oil or coconut oil on a paper plate and wave it around in the tank. The gnats will stick to the oil. To try and rid them from the tank, try feeing only dry foods for a couple weeks. No fresh foods. You can get awesome hermit crab safe foods from www.crabstreetjournal.org or on etsy from hermit grub or just2old crabs.
I am obsessed with my new pet hermit crabs I got them yesterday they are so cute! I do have them in a critter keeper but it’s very large and the substrate is very deep both of my crabs are down molting and their names are bubbles and skidoosh
Omg you replied! Well kinda like from your first tank, and then to your tanks now! Like an evolution and see how you care has improved! If you used those tiny bug cage things from dollar tree then include those too. I think it would help people understand that we all start somewhere!
Hello Crab Central Station! I have a question... could you house small freshwater fish in your crabies freshwater pool? Potentially a 5 gallon? Assuming it was large enough for the fish. And you had a large enough tank to house a 5 gallon in your hermies tank. Either tetras or fresh water shrimp?
You sure can! We are experimenting with freshwater fish in our 10 gallon water pools right now! We have found, however, that if the breed of fish is not fast enough the crabs do eat them! Tetras seem to work, but we have yet to try shrimp.
Hello! I am wondering how much sub should I add to my 20 gallon long? I want it so they have plenty of climbing space, but anough sub. Also one of my Hermit crabs died while molting. :(
Hi Sophie Ricci. I'm sorry to hear about your crab passing during molting. Sometimes that happens as the molting process is very complex. As for substrate, you need 6" minimum of theb5:1 ay sand to eco earth. That will be 2, 50lb bags of sand and 1 brick of EE.
Hello from Texas! We just use clear packing tape around the outside edges of the background. Then we tape the heat mat using the same kind of tape. Does that help, or am I misunderstanding your question. I'm happy to help, let me know if you have more questions.
@@CrabCentralStation no that's perfect I used packing tape also with the heat mat but we are waiting on the background so I will probably do the same as you guys when it arrives. Thanks for the help and love the giant tank room 🙂
love that these are pretty similar to mine. just upgraded to a 40gal breeder tank for my two hermies Creep & Hyde. Creep is my biggest crab and he’s the most social, but i’ve been wondering, since he’s always out and about, should i add another crab or two? Hyde is very true to his name so i don’t see him as often as the other. i want creep to have friends i feel like he’s v lonely
Hello Rhiannon! How exciting that you have upgraded! Congratulations! We follow the 1 crab per 10 gallon rule, so this means that in a 40 gallon you could have four crabs! Creep would love a couple more friends in the tank! If you are able, please adopt and don’t shop the new crabs! Thank you so much for your support!
Hi!! Im afraid i have a problem with one of my crabs. he is a small purple pincher and i got him at the beach (dont worry now im more educated and wont ever shop ever again) his shell is topped with a gloss which is dangerous and im afraid he is stuck
Hi Daniella C. Has your crab ever changed shells before? if so, he probably isn't stuck in the current one that has a clear gloss coating. If he has not ever changed before, it is possible. Unfortunately though, there is nothing we can do to make them change shells or to help them become unstuck to the paint/gloss. Trying to break the shell off of him/her can cause damage or death just as being stuck can. The best thing you can do is provide him/her with several shell options that are the correct type and size (check out our shell 101 video to see how to measure and order shells). Then, just hope that he can change into one of them. Sadly, this is sometimes the result of a horrible unregulated industry. I'm so happy to hear that you will adopt instead of shop next time - that's great! We bought our first crabs from a beach shop too, but now we only adopt, foster, and rescue.
Thank you so much. No he hasnt changed shells before:( I really appreciate your channel and what you do. thank you so much and i hope nothing happens to my crabby
I have a question what is the smallest tank they can have because I only have one but he lives in a plastic tub it I just a substitute for now but I have a tank and I'm gonna be honest it's kinda small its not a 20 gallon I think it's a 16 or 18 gallon but I just need help. My hermit crabs name is sabation Ive had him about a month.
Well it's me from a while ago anyways I fix it and got a 10 gallon tank my other crabs tank was 3 gallon 😮 and lived alone but I got him another crab and everything is better and I'm so happy because of y'all!!
We all have a starting point, most of us at the same place - with the information given at the beach shop or pet store. The good news is that we can move forward in our journey to provide a better life for them.
I’m a little late but I just got four hermits a few days ago and was wondering if you could review my tank cause I want to know if I need to make any changes.
Are you going to filter them? They would be difficult to take out of thebtank to clean every couple of days. Also, make sure you have a safe and easy way for the crabs to get in and out of the pool. The skinny opening at the top is what worries me. As your crabs get bigger can they easily get in and out with the ladder and tubing from the filter. Just some things to think about.
@@CrabCentralStation I think because of the size of my tank I’ll be going with a critter carrier as my pool with a bubbler. I only have a 20 gallon right now, so I’ll put them on a shelf to not lose molt space. I’ve also ordered some food from Just 2 old crab! Thank you for the suggestion. My crabs were on pellet mix food from the store & I think that’s why they haven’t been touching it 🥺 I’ll be trying fresh cooked food today as well!
We definitely will do more reactions to tanks... probably pretty soon, because it's been awhile since we've done one. Join us on our IG and FB for announcements!
Thanks for watching! We are not taking any tanks for review right now. We will make an announcement when we do. If you just want us to take a look at your tank you can always email us at crabcentralstation@gmail.com
We just do them periodically. We usually make a post on our IG for new submissions a couple weeks before we release the video. Follow us on IG so you can get your tank pics in when we announce it 😁
@@CrabCentralStation awe I don't have an IG. Do you ever take any through FB? Though tbh I'd love to just show you guys anyways if I'm allowed to message ya there :] It's a "walk-in" hermit crab "green-house". A true mansion of a setup 😅
@@CrabCentralStation is there a way you can cut glass or make a custom top for a tank my top doesnt completely cover. its possible you have talked about it but your videos are so long I sometimes have trouble finding info
Yes! All of our lids are custom made. We got glass cut to the exact size at a local glass shop. We then siliconed knobs to the top so we could easily take them down when need be
We will post on Instagram asking for tank submissions about a week before we do our next tank reaction video. If you just want us to look over your tank privately, you can email us at crabcentralstation@gmail.com
We like to do these every couple months... keep your eye out on Instagram for the next announcement. You can join us tonight during the live! We will have comments open for questions and we learn a lot from seeing others tanks. Hope to see you there!
Hey I’ve been really busy so I’ve missed some uploads but I got really nice shells for my hermits and I’m upgrading from a 20 gallon tall to a 55 gallon 😃 I’m very exited I should be setting it up with in a couple weeks! But do you have any suggestions I got bigger water dishes should I add my old ones as extras.? Also should I add extra food dishes?
Hi It's KittyBee, good to have you back! Awesome upgrade! You should be good with the new bigger pools, no need to have the old ones too. We do have several food dishes in our tanks, but we have a lot of crabs and we don't want any fighting over resources. You could have one food dish with daily foods, one with worm casting/green sand, one with some foraging goods like oyster shells, flowers, ect.
Would you come to. My house and set up a tank in my house. I think you could travel to help, people get started and build crab tanks.....kinda like the TV show Tanked on you work with hermit crabs.
I would love to start with two crabs in a 20 high., I’m so afraid Ayer watching all your and the other couple crab channels . That everything has to be perfect or your crabs will die. And all the other climbing stuff geez that’s a lot.
They do require pretty specific care, but once you have it all set up, they are pretty low maintenance. The initial set up takes time and money... but it is worth doing it the right way. Your crabs will be happy, healthy, and more active.
Want a baby hermit crab? If so, head on over to our TH-cam channel and check out our latest video that explains how to adopt one of our first captive bred babies!
Kate Schemenauer - don't we all? Our first tank was a kritter keeper with CAT LITTER as a substrate!!! Can you even imagine??? How a beach shop gets away with selling crabs in that environment and telling people that is the best way to care for them, it's just beyond me. BUT.... This is a safe place to learn and a loving community! Please feel free to send pictures, ask questions, and keep watching our videos on the different aspects of their care. Welcome aboard!

We have a lot of videos that will answer all of your questions in depth, check them out :)
You can always email us as well at crabcentralstation.com
Did this help you?
Where do you get the hermit crab wheel? I know they like to walk and I can’t find the saucer style wheel they have in their videos
We find the saucers at Petco and the plastic vertical wheels at Petsmart.
8:10 you can see a crab playing with the weal
All. The. Time. They love it!
@@CrabCentralStation 😂 awesome
We are all entered...including our Google review. 🤞🏻😁🤞🏻
Super awesome! Thank you!
I am obsessed with my new pet hermit crabs I got them yesterday they are so cute! I do have them in a critter keeper but it’s very large and the substrate is very deep both of my crabs are down molting and their names are bubbles and skidoosh
Hi! Such cute names! I recommend upgrading to an aquarium when you can. 😊
@@CrabCentralStation yes I’m trying but I can’t get one
Facebook market often has great deals on aquariums!
Thanks I’ll check there
super helpful for ideas on how to upgrade- UNRELATED,, her eyes are the prettiest green color !!
Awesome! We are so glad you find our content helpful! And, thanks!
Hi! I LOVEEEE your videos and you have helped me sooo much! I was wondering if you could do a tank evolution? I think that would be cool!
Hi! That sounds like fun! What does a tank evolution mean?
Omg you replied! Well kinda like from your first tank, and then to your tanks now! Like an evolution and see how you care has improved! If you used those tiny bug cage things from dollar tree then include those too. I think it would help people understand that we all start somewhere!
WOW! What a GREAT idea! I LOVE this! We will definitely put this on our video idea list. Thanks for suggesting it 🥰
@@CrabCentralStation thanks! I really appreciate it!
where do you get those leaf backgrounds like the ones they can climb on?
Amazon - artificial box bush panels.
What kind of wood am I able to use in my cabbies tank, also can I use maple/oak leaves from the yard
You can use maple/oak leaves if you do not use any pesticides in your yard. Those are also good woods to use!
Hi Darcy could you show us your pools in detail to give us ideas onsetups
Hi B Peters, stay tuned.... next video out 😉
Would love for you to check are 55 gallon tank would like to know if this is a good place for are 4 crabs
Can you use crab safe paint on their shells or no cuz I have just go my first hermit crabs today
No paint is safe for hermit crabs. They modify their shells to fit their eyestalks and they can easily eat the paint as it chips off.
Hi I have had 3 crabs seens July of last year and they have not molted ones what can I do to help them or what should I do
Hello! Would you mind reaching out to us on our instagram? We are able to better help one on one there! Our handle is @crabcentralstation
Hi Crab central station👋 do you put the heat mats on the outside of your plastic aquarium backgrounds?
Yes we do. We use ultratherm heat mats on thermostats.
@@CrabCentralStation how do you stick the backgrounds on may I ask?
I'm from Australia also so I might not be able to buy the same products 😬
Hello from Texas! We just use clear packing tape around the outside edges of the background. Then we tape the heat mat using the same kind of tape. Does that help, or am I misunderstanding your question. I'm happy to help, let me know if you have more questions.
@@CrabCentralStation no that's perfect I used packing tape also with the heat mat but we are waiting on the background so I will probably do the same as you guys when it arrives.
Thanks for the help and love the giant tank room 🙂
Great! You're welcome 😊
love that these are pretty similar to mine. just upgraded to a 40gal breeder tank for my two hermies Creep & Hyde.
No he hasnt changed shells before:(
I really appreciate your channel and what you do. thank you so much and i hope nothing happens to my crabby
What’s the best place to get food?
Great question! We like just2oldcrabs on etsy as well as hermitgrub, also on etsy.
Hey ladies! I left a review on the website for the giveaway:)
Thank you!!!
Your picture for the video did you intentionally spell subscriber wrong?
😉 creating late night thumbnail pictures is obviously not my forte! Thanks, friend!
Me watching this channel then realize my hermits are suffering
We all have a starting point, most of us at the same place - with the information given at the beach shop or pet store. The good news is that we can move forward in our journey to provide a better life for them.
I’m a little late but I just got four hermits a few days ago and was wondering if you could review my tank cause I want to know if I need to make any changes.
Hi! Yes, I'll be happy to look it over. Send us some pictures to our e-mail
crabcentralstation@gmail.com
Should I use a coco hut?
our crabs love their coco huts!
I am entering the giveaway!!! Love from Maryland you guys have helped me a lot over the years with my hermit crabs thank you guys 🙏
Yay!!! So glad we could help. Thank you for supporting us over the years!
Can I use the round fish bowls for my pools??? I think it would be kinda cool to have round pools hah 😅. But idk if that’s not good to have
Are you going to filter them?
@@misscristina255 Awesome!!! I'm so glad our videos are helping you and your crabbies have the best life! Keep up the good work!

how often do you guys do tank reviews, and where do we send things to be shared to you guys for these? :)
We just do them periodically. We usually make a post on our IG for new submissions a couple weeks before we release the video. Follow us on IG so you can get your tank pics in when we announce it 😁
@@CrabCentralStation awe I don't have an IG. Do you ever take any through FB?
Though tbh I'd love to just show you guys anyways if I'm allowed to message ya there :]
It's a "walk-in" hermit crab "green-house". A true mansion of a setup 😅
Yes, of course! You can email us pictures at crabcentralstation@gmail.com we would love to see your set up.
@@CrabCentralStation i'll deff do that then! thanks so much!
wouldnt higher temp increase humidity??
No, higher temperatures will drop your humidity.

How do I find the name for my hermit crab
We come up with ours on our own!
Hey I’ve been really busy so I’ve missed some uploads but I got really nice shells for my hermits and
I’m upgrading from a 20 gallon tall to a 55 gallon 😃 I’m very exited I should be setting it up with in a couple weeks!
@@CrabCentralStation thank you for your feed back! This should help a lot!
@@CrabCentralStation oh I had another question how can I send you a picture of my tank?
You can email us tank pictures - crabcentralstation@gmail.com
@@CrabCentralStation thank you
Is it just me or the hermit crabs always spinning on the wheel
How could I send my tank to you?
we are not currently taking tank reaction submissions but when we are, we will announce it on our instagram!
Would you come to. My house and set up a tank in my house. I think you could travel to help, people get started and build crab tanks.....kinda like the TV show Tanked on you work with hermit crabs.
Oh man, that would be a super fun job! I wish I could do that 😁. For now though, I am a 6th grade teacher.
After subscribe this channel I really want to keep hermit crab
