From Dutch learning German is way easier than learning French. Some people are just scared of Komposita (merged words like Rindfleischettiketierungsüberwachungsgesetz or whatever that's called) but most composed words aren't really long (like Handschuh). Longer ones are more of an exception but not that rare, but also not undoable. The grammar is another thing haha. If you want to give it another shot, give it another shot ^^

Just to break it down for the non-German speakers: In German Grammar you can usually just fuse words to express a connection between them. The story shows how absurd this grammatical construction occasionally can become. The fun part is that every part of the story and the words they end up with are entirely legit (a little weird maybe, but it all makes sense) and could theoretically be used in German language. It's ridiculously long and hard to pronounce, though. The literal translation of the longest word they finally end up with would be "Bärbel, who works at the bar that sells the beer of that one barber who trims the beards of the barbarians who usually visit Rhubarb-Barbara's bar". Hope that helps ;)
It is just fun. Fun sometimes also means absurd, but in this case it is not. On the contrary - the fun of this joke comes from the fact that even though is sounds like gibberish, It makes total sense all the way, if 1. you understand German, and 2. are capable of doing the necessary decoding fast enough. And I admit, as a non-native German speaker, this is very fast.

From Dutch learning German is way easier than learning French. Some people are just scared of Komposita (merged words like Rindfleischettiketierungsüberwachungsgesetz or whatever that's called) but most composed words aren't really long (like Handschuh). Longer ones are more of an exception but not that rare, but also not undoable.
The grammar is another thing haha. If you want to give it another shot, give it another shot ^^

Just to break it down for the non-German speakers: In German Grammar you can usually just fuse words to express a connection between them.
The story shows how absurd this grammatical construction occasionally can become. The fun part is that every part of the story and the words they end up with are entirely legit (a little weird maybe, but it all makes sense) and could theoretically be used in German language. It's ridiculously long and hard to pronounce, though.
The literal translation of the longest word they finally end up with would be "Bärbel, who works at the bar that sells the beer of that one barber who trims the beards of the barbarians who usually visit Rhubarb-Barbara's bar".

It is just fun. Fun sometimes also means absurd, but in this case it is not. On the contrary - the fun of this joke comes from the fact that even though is sounds like gibberish, It makes total sense all the way, if 1. you understand German, and 2. are capable of doing the necessary decoding fast enough. And I admit, as a non-native German speaker, this is very fast.
