I'd not realised how different they are, I only had the original. It almost seems like they should have gone half an extra mile and just made Assassin 2.
I was surprised at the amount of changes as well, doing a full on sequel might have been a better idea. I wonder how long it took to make these changes. but then Team17 released a few special editions with lots of changes like Alien Breed that I think doubled the level count.
Its a fun game and the terminator inspirations continued into the game. as there is a terminator style robot that says "I'll be back" when you destroy them 😁
Ah, remember when we were impressed by voice samples of that quality? 😄 I don’t remember Assassin at all? I probably heard it had a timer & just dismissed it. The changes for the special edition are surprisingly substantial, especially the weapon mechanics. I can certainly see the Strider comparison but Strider “flows” cleanly where, from what you’ve shown & said, this doesn’t. Then again what do I know, I don’t think I plaid it. Then again I have severe memory issues, so for all I know it could have been a favourite back in the day. 😅 Interesting video, thanks.
Good voice samples always used to impress me, still does in the older games 😉 The saving grace with the timer is that its not a game over, but its still makes the game far more difficult. and yeah the flow is the problem, you have to stop to fire and baddies can come at you quickly. so stop shoot at anything off screen, run, stop, shoot. its not a great flow, but SE goes a long way to improve that. Thanks for watching.
Only owned the SE back then and didn't know of the differences at all. I always enjoyed Assassin, a good Strider clone for the Amiga imho. Gorgeous graphics, and plays very fluidly and well, too.
I didn't really grasp the amount of changes with the games until I really started checking them both out for the video. up to that point I thought it was just the sprite.
Never played the special edition but I get why they simplified so much the levels and implemented a classic horizontal fire: the game was so hard. The combination of very hard difficulty and confusing maps was devastating. In fact, in my opinion Assassin is too unbalanced to be considered a good game. The first level is very promising but literally it doesn't represent the rest of the game. In the 80s, there were many action platforms with similar gameplay, with almost unavoidable enemy attacks and confusing levels: Assassin seems to retain that design, which in 1993 was completely dead and for good reasons, and this game seems to completely ignore the evolution in terms of game design happening on consoles. Great video, anyway!
I'll echo how hard it was, had to use so many of the cheats to finish that off. where SE was a far more straight forward and enjoyable game. Its a weird mix of new game designs and a lot of old.
I like both versions, but I miss first stage in woods and caves in SE. I think that dogs were too much annoying so they cut whole stage. SE would be better if they restore it and that boss fight and chopper at start, only dogs could be removed. Nobody will miss them, plus I do not like the idea of hurting dogs in games.
yeah I think the first stage should have stayed, it didn't even need to get cut down. it would have been fine as a single big level, but getting rid of those dogs would have been a must do. so annoying when they grab on and who wants to kill dogs?!
I think that's more how I played it as I ended up being very cautious as some enemies would quickly run out and hit you. so I just kept trying to hit them off screen, I think if you were better at the game it would flow nicer.
The main character is like Strider! :D
I get the feeling they were very inspired by that game 😁

I don't think I ever got off the first level of the original version (until I discovered 'savestates' of course!).
The first level was a little hard, those dogs were a real pain to deal with.
Great work sir! That looks interesting, I thought the soldiers at the start were Peter Jackson!
Only ever saw that first version and i thought it was ok ish but never knew the SE version was so different amazingly
I had no idea how many changes they made until I made the video, I knew of a few of the basics.
so it was really interesting to dive into.
Good old days. This was a great game.
The music is very Terminator inspired.
Now I have to fire up FSUAE and play this.
Its a fun game and the terminator inspirations continued into the game.

@@GouldFishOnGames Good old days of no lawsuits.
Definitely would have been better developers for Strider than Tiertex with their HUDs that took up half the screen and their 2 frames per second
This team should have headed up Strider 2, rather then the hated Tiertex.
but then it would have been Amiga only (not that its a bad thing).

Endgame / game over music in this game was also excellent. You’ll never defeat Midan!
was always a bit shocked when i heard the narrated intro (was that in the second game)?
I loved Team 17, but don't remember Assassin...I would have enjoyed it though .
I guess there is no better time then now to try and give it a go 😉

Welp, at least it's better than the Assasins collection.
That start-stop gameplay looks annoying as hell...
