  • I surveyed multiple Porsche dealerships and found the average cost of having a Cayman's oil changed was around $450! Do it yourself in under an hour for about $50 and pocket the $400 difference. Even if you have to buy every tool I use in this video, including a floor jack, you'll only spend about half of the dealer price on that first oil change. After that ... $400 ... every ... single ... time ...

It's always baffled me as to why the USA still uses quarts to measure fluids.
Each division on the Porsche readout is 500ml - half a litre - A nice round figure!
    Quarts just confuses everything!

you can simulate knurling on the end of a bolt by twisting it to the left a couple millimeters at a time until you feel it give a tiny bit and that's a sign that you've hit the thread

my 2013 Toyota sienna was the first car I ever experienced that inner oil filter element replacement versus a screw in self-contained unit. it was weird at first but then I learned how to do it and it's no problem not really taking any much longer.

Great video! Thanks for how insightful it was. Before you drain the oil it is also helpful to remove the oil filler cap to create a vent!

Thanks for pointing that out. I forget to do that about 95% of the time :) tbh, tho, I'm not sure how much of a difference it really makes. It might depend on the car, probably some engine designs need it more than others.

Something I’ve started doing on my Cayman a few years ago. Is cutting open the used filter. And inspect it for any metal and or debris. Along with grabbing an oil sample to send to off to the lab.
I also replace the oil plug every 3 oil changes or so.

Create a vent ? No. It's to create a net pressure of zero between the engine and the surroundings. That way gravity does its job on the oil "better"

@@alexv5581 You are both right. He just knows a word that you don't. VENT: an opening that allows air, gas, or liquid to pass out of or into a confined space

I always thought you were supposed to keep the drain plug out when removing the filter to ensure the best drainage. Is that the right procedure for this car?

Cliff Dude - One of the bolts appears to be missing from your exhaust manifold. (at 21:19)

I would have taken the oil filter off first , then the pan oil ,

Good eye! Yep, it seems that (weirdly enough) 987.1 manifold bolts seem to either seize up to where they're impossible to remove or simply fall out ... :)

Just bought a fairly well specced 2012 987.2S 6MT. Want to do my own maintenance but they are so rare I don’t want to impact value too much. But I don’t want that Porsche tax 😅 what to do what to do

I am doing it myself to save some $$ but also because it's not that bad. Now, I do have quick jacks and have accumulated a lot of tools over the years making it that much easier to work on my cars. Plus I take my time and do it correctly. On a 2005 Boxster S, 6 speed I bought for 13k, I'm really not worried about dealership maintenance recs. 😆

The correct torque for the oil plug is 37 Nm.

    • @HokieD1993
      @HokieD1993 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Not sure that is correct. Pelican Parts says 50 Nm (37 ft-lb)
