I remember back in 2005/06 when I was reading some auto magazine and came across a news scoop of the Fortuner launching in India at around 12 lakhs. I felt really thrilled seeing the car and the price. This was the time when Swift was 4.5 lakhs, Qualis, Sumo, Bolero was 6-7 lakhs, Scorpio was around 10 lakhs, etc. I was a college student and my taste was changing from dreaming about expensive German/American cars and starting to like cheap small cars. I remember back then when the Tata Indigo CS had launched and I was excited to see a short length sedan at a lower price. So my being excited about the Fortuner speaks volumes about its VFM tag. I actually thought this was a SUV that I could actually buy, instead of the Scorpio. But it took a lot of years for the Fortuner to actually launch (2009 as mentioned in the video), and finally the asking price of 19 lakhs disappointed me. Today the Fortuner is the torch-bearer of hooliganism and rowdyism. In fact there are Punjabi songs that declare that Fortuners are meant to mow down toll gates.

Why hasn't the Gloster been successful? 1. Not as rugged and capable as the fortuner off road. 2. Proven to be quite unreliable filling forum pages with complaints starting from oil leak issues to major transmission issue 3. The Chinese MG emblem is not very desirable 4. Couldn't establish the brand early on. Something where the Endy succeeded in and therefore at some point was giving the fortuner serious competition.
Facts indeed!!!. The Gloster would have done really well if MG would have got it's reliability spot on. The reality is why will anyone spend so much on a not so desirable brand with well documented reliability issues. Cant Imagine owning a Gloster for 10-15 yrs when niggles come knocking in the initial stage of ownership itself. Bring back the Endeavor!!!
Sometimes it feels we Indians give up performance for gizmos like a billion inch touchscreen, panoramic sunroof (hey, there's six windows), ADAS (seemingly useless in our traffic). I would still trade all these features in for a honda's V6 or Toyota's legendary 2GR-FE. Add to that, manufacturers are putting turbos on engines with a cubic capacity less than a milk carton for pulling the same gross weight.
Its resale value, reliability and the low service cost that makes this car what it is. I come from driving a brand new DSG and I would seriously consider the Fortuner as my new car some 4-5 years down the line. Perhaps by then, there would be more interesting options in the market.
The segment Trio- ENDY, GLOSSY, and Fortuner are one of the best cars in Indian market which offers different things like Endy offers you great dynamics, performance and stabilty on road. Fostuner provide you amazing power and reliable engine and Gloster have features from both, still its the most premium car in the segment with great finishing and cabin quality.

No one talks about the hard steering in the Fortuner, which is a big con, and yes the power is great but you don’t constantly drive spiritedly, electronic steering would have been much better, it's better driven by a driver.
I feel like one big reason among many for the huge sales is because of the ripple effect it created almost a decade back. The image it created has been engraved so deeply of it being 'THE SUV' is still being perceived by many till today. But just like all ripples coming to a halt if the prices keep skyrocketing like this then the days of Fortuner's dominance will also soon die down significantly.

Looks much less impressive(aka less badass)than Fortuner. After sales and reliability is okay but nowhere near Toyota. 2) Tata Safari. I LOOOOVE the way this car looks both inside and outside. But what are the chances it will run for 10 years hassle free? There seems to be a large number of negative experiences online regarding Tata service etc. I know that's to be expected because mostly the people who had negative experiences will talk about it online but that's the case for all brands and still Tata seems to be the one that seems most likely to be a gamble. And if I wanted to gamble with 30 lakhs I would buy Bitcoin lol(not financial advice) 3)Gloster. In terms of appearance this is as good if not better than everything in this segment. But maintenance and reliability are big question marks(please correct me if I'm wrong). And repairs will be more expensive compared to Toyota for sure. 4)Meridian. Similar to above but less impressive in terms of appearance. So I am now beginning to realise why the Fortuner is soooo insanely popular. Two reasons: 1) It's the only one in it's segment that can last for 10+ years without too much expense or headache. And contrary to what people believe...a person buying a 40-50 L car DOES care about maintenance. I am able to afford the Fortuner without taking a loan and even I care about maintenance costs and reliability. And most people are gonna be financing their Fortuners...so they definitely care. 2)It is EASILY the most badass looking vehicle in the 50L range(only Gloster gives competition in terms of appearance but it will PROBABLY be much more expensive to maintain... Fortuner is a wannabe ego trip statement at the best.
Tbh Scorpio N is way better than this toyota stuff... Their we get double wishbone suspension with Watts linkage , Ventilated disc brakes front and rear and the list continues... Has sunroof , connected car , etc etc in Z6 diesel which cost 19 lakhs which is less than half of Fortuner costs. Also , Scorpio N has more width and height than Fortuner too...
Toyota will be one of the first brands to release flexible vehicles, including their Innova and fortuner lineup. So they will definitely continue their dominance in the respective segments.
Driving a Gloster is a greate pleasure, and fortuner is yur sporty friend, but still I'm worried about the quality that Toyota providing in 50 lakh budget.
Spending 50 lakhs..cheap service cost ..can go anywhere reliable engine useable and functioning controls..and most important resale value .. that's the perfect 1st 50 lakh car for you even the camry is...360 degree camera and other features can be installed aftermarket..but great resale value less maintenance cost can't.. That's a sensible decision

The price is the USP of fortuner. It’s Toyota where SUV ends Fortuner begins from there. Good Toyota kept it higher price it’s an art of keeping the class away from masses. ( like Royal Enfield of two wheeler , every one has one and it’s a commoner now. No more class). Toyota Fortuner is emotion inshort Fixed Deposit
Bought it exactly 354 days ago. Absolutely a stunning car. Buy only if you love driving not if a chauffeur is going to be driving it. Trust me, the engine is amazing and the MT is just icing on the cake.
Price is one thing but for that cabin inside looks so dead! 5-7 years back. Even if Toyota works on that front it might command some of the price it has been valued at
MG recently introduced Gloster's blackstom edition which is no doubt a knight of this segment, they've added that perfomance value which is quiet a fun driving the Balckstorma and also carring safety features like adas and better build quality than Fortuner.
Spoke what was on my mind. I don’t see why Indians are paying premium car money for essentially taxi maker. Toyota is a taxi maker all over the world and entry level cheap cars. India has put them in league with BMW and Audi . The plastic quality of fortuner is same as that in some commercial trucks.
What do you get from BMW under 60 lakhs let alone 50-55 lakhs ? This buying with budget stretching doesnt work with such cars as they are really unreliable and the maintanance cost a bomb while a fortuner or most japanese cars keep running with just engine oil, fuel and tyres
Toyota is the most selling brand of the world for a reason. They have seperate variants for taxi. We dont get real toyotas and thats it. Holding gripe wont work. They have fun cars like GR yaris, Gr corolla and sports cars as well but will we get them ? No. Before saying about plastic quality. What kind of quality are we talking about ? Durability or plushness. Plushness like mercedes would last only so much and any cheap toyota's plastic quality is manifolds better than a bmw's plastic which just melts under the sun
Overpriced - Not when it was originally launched... for the first two generations. Now, definitely yes... a big fat yes. Overhyped - For ability and practicality, no. In terms of features and comfort, yes Undefeatable - At this price, no. For a percentage of extra money, I think people can look at other cars which provide at least similar levels of ability, more comfort and potentially more status.
The cheapest Land Rover is 90 Lakhs OTR, and a Fortuner’s base variant starts at 40 Lakhs and goes till 60 Lakhs. So what are you even talking about going for a Land Rover ?!?!
@@sanchaynarain3532True. Fortuner is the only real option in it's class. Only if the Endeavor & Pajero Sport had sold in good numbers we would have had some meaningful alternatives.
@@vikyp989Endeavour gave a pretty good competition though, even if it was present now the current generation would have definitely eaten up a lot of sales and also Fortuner wouldn’t have been hyped as much as it is rn.
Lets be real there is no competitor. Luxury brands are not reliable and Range rovers are as good as trash 3-4 years down the line. To keep a car long term it needs to be reliable and that is toyota
Isn't it pointless buying used fortuners/innovas. Their resale value is so good you could actually spend a little more and get a new one. Example would be a 50000km run innova crysta zx diesel automatic being sold at 23 lakhs. Not worth it at all. And, most Indians don't maintain their vehicles well which makes it more risky to buy a used car. Let me know if you think otherwise!
@@xp5158 I’ve bought a 10 year old fortuner and put in some money to upgrade it. All in price is less than what you pay for a compact suv and it’s a great buy. Not regretting it one bit
How I would like to put it as, Fortuner was well priced, till Endeavor competed with it. Then Toyota understood, 1. Lack of options 2. People's sentiments associated 3. Desire to showoff image. Now for all these 3 things, people are ready to shell out insane money. So Toyota saw the opportunity and grabbed it. People complaining about a VW Tiaguan or a Skoda KODIAQ, both PETROL only, but see the price gap as well. Take an extended warranty and keep 5lacs in hand for DSG Gearbox Failure, still at the end of 5years, one would be seeing that they spent less than a 5year On Road Price of Fortuner. Toyota just doesn't want to invest on features, when people are ready to buy it without features. Simple Business!! I would say, TATA SAFARI Fully Loaded, SUV 700 Fully Loaded or SCORPIO N Fully Loaded at 30lacs +-2 lacs OTR Price makes sense a lot. Somehow SAFARI is yet to give 4x4, but how many of us are indeed using 4x4.
I've driven fortuner all the time and its great car and no one can deny, but today Gloster is standing against it and giving pretty tough competion to it.
When I see this unmistakable Toyota Fortuner while walking on the road, I hurriedly change track as I do not like the sight of an accompanying gunner wearing black.
Fortuner is overpriced, for that matter I feel even Innova is over priced... But the bulletproof reliability is what make these vehicle so desirable!!! One of my relative bought 5 years old Innova automatic (especially for BS4 and bigger engine ) at 17 Lakhs !
Absolutely!!!!.... Not having to ever send your car to the service center outside the usual maintainence schedule is a massive bonus. Only an Innova/fortuner owner will understand this.
All I can say that neither of these guys ever owned a German brand car in india or a fortuner in india .. having owned both .. u just realise that there is nothing premium about a BMW X1 except it’s price .. 20k .. I had to replace brakes .. it took me 3 months because the service centre had no slots no spare parts .. after 4 years the interior door handles melted .. after 28 k rear shocker died .. after 5 year the sunroof roof lining came hanging down .. actually other than the price the ownership experience was even less premium than Maruti …. But yeah it s engine .. boy that diesel engine pulls like crazy .. Toyota on the other hand I can take it any where !! Servicing 1/3rd of bmw. It dashboard may not be premium but overall ownership experience is stress free and smooth and indeed premium!!
Fortuner's success lies in its resale price and unbothered ownership (unbothered about breakdowns and after purchase expenses). All other things like 'bravado' and 'systumm' etc come as a +
Many people will feel very bad, but brother, the simple fact is that Fortuner has become very expensive, although it is based on a pickup, Toyota has launched it by giving only the rear roof and some nice interior. ,,,,,The real meaning is that those who wanted to be sold simply fled the country. ford and mitsubishi Leaving aside the reliability and durability of a Toyota, this car does not cost more than Rs 30,,,,32 or at most Rs 35 lakh. Because of politicians and powerful people, it has become more popular, but not more.
We say Government systems are pathetic because there is no competition. When I see TOYOTA FORTUNER, I realise that lack of competition even makes Private Comapnit worst than Government System in offering. If Toyota Fortuner can be offered in more of a big family SUV avatar likes of Toyota Sequoia of USA with strong hybrid petrol of Innova Hycross, it can kill the first entry level SUVs of BMW, Audi & Merc. But ultimately who cares, Toyota is happy downgrading itself with Maruti Suzuki JV. That's the model successful as per B-schools
In the political hierarchy, you missed the Ciaz/Verna which sits above the dzire.. And below the Scorpio, there's the Bolero Neo... The fortuner is being succeeded, in recent times, by the JLR Defender...
My elder brother recently sold his #fortuner and again brought fortuner #legender
When you go off roading what you need is reliability instead of features. Fortuner does everything better than any suv in India in off roading in its class and other class too
It’s not because of resale value it’s famous but it’s famous that’s why it has good resale value. It’s that “power” “being raw” attracts a general Indian influenced by societal setup of glorifying power with politicians n mafia thru n thru which makes fortunes famous. The day society stops glorifying mafia Ian in stories n movies the realism will hit a buyer. But that will never happen, keep loving that fortunes vibe!!
All those who never owned one are vomiting here, when you have no issues of giving 32 lakh for a tata with a hyundai transmission and fiat engine but you have issues with a 2.8 ltr engine with all 4x4 tech and bulletproof ownership
Toyota is pricing their Fortuner variants upon craze among the buyers in India, but definitely not the features. But this is not a safe play on a longer run for automotive companies in India. Deprived of many needy features they still launch their top variant Fortuner model for Rs.64.32 Lakhs seems atrocious how the company weighs Indian buying behavior.
I believe the main reason the Fortuner is such a big success is its competition. Don't get me wrong, they are all great cars, but they are being priced as much as the Fortuner. Now, if Isuzu did not increase its price so drastically, it would've eaten into some of the sales of the Fortuner. Bit when you see that its just a little cheaper than the Fortuner, obviously we feel its better to go with the trusted product especially considering the availability of spares and resale value.
Yes, IMO Fortuner is Overhyped and definitely overpriced. In the same price there are other good option as well like MG Gloster etc. those give better value for money.
Toyota cracked the code, now they are milking the buyers. For it's potential buyers the fortuner is more than the sum of its parts. Toyota reliability too can be decoded pretty easily.

Endeavour Was The Only Option To Control Fortuner Pricing Through Competition !!!
Lol ..
Toyota will be one of the first brands to release flexible vehicles, including their Innova and fortuner lineup. So they will definitely continue their dominance in the respective segments.
2 BEST Indian car Journos (My personal Favorite) doing what they do best...As always! Thanks Guys!
🙏🙏
Once you drive Gloster willl never want other car. The car has feel of thrill!
What more should be expected from an SUV based off the Hilux pick-up with regard to refinement and dynamics !!
I wish you could also discuss future perspectives too like diesel engines in view of NGT policies
Guys… update yourselves.. there is no JBL sound system.. my friend had booked the vehicle taking test drive in the vehicle having JBL’s .. but when the top of the line vehicle arrived.. they JBL’s went missing…. When inquired.. they said that they broke the ties.. surprising… … isn’t it…
Gloster, is much more advance & luxury SUV compared to Fortuner 😍
Fortuner needs an interior overhaul to even justify 70% of it's price tag.
Even if Toyota works on that front it might command some of the price it has been valued at
Was planning to buy one but would be stupid to do so at this price point. I can easily buy 2 suv in 10 years period. Not worth the price. Period.
The reason for the high price is not only Toyota, the government tax too.
then how do more luxurious and feature rich vehicles cost less than the fortuner in the same tax bracket ?
Government taxes make ALL cars way more expensive than they need to be
MG recently introduced Gloster's blackstom edition which is no doubt a knight of this segment, they've added that perfomance value which is quiet a fun driving the Balckstorma and also carring safety features like adas and better build quality than Fortuner.
Chinese over japanese 😂
@@CLOSEUP001lol UK not chineese
U fortuner kids are hilarious
Illiterates .
What about the upcoming Fortuner, new gen/facelift with diesel mild hybrid? No mention of it, can we have a video on it.
No point blindly speculating and potentially misleading. When we have more concrete information, we’ll certainly have a video on the new Fortuner
Keeping in mind the eminent diesel cars ban in India, does the resale value edge in buying the fortuner still holds true?
Fortuner.. Buy once cry once.. After that its all smiles for next few generations 😂
That’s a great way to put it!
I want to know how safe is Fotuner, I want ADAS and other safety feaures in Fortuner like Gloster has right now.
#zigwheels - please put up a video on the overhyped valuation of used cars
Overpriced - Not when it was originally launched... for the first two generations. Now, definitely yes... a big fat yes.
Overhyped - For ability and practicality, no. In terms of features and comfort, yes
Undefeatable - At this price, no.
Gloster is the game change of this segment as it offers completely new vibe other than Fortuner and Eandeavour.
It swings like hell, steering is bad, I test drive it.
Buy it then joker
@@cannibalronny7314 Why ?
Best Fortuners today are the used ones in the market! Amazing value for money
Fortuner is undefeated because of its design and japani engine ❤
Too Long a video , for the substance in it.
Overhyped and overpriced too no doubt
I've driven fortuner all the time and its great car and no one can deny, but today Gloster is standing against it and giving pretty tough competion to it.
Hahahaha joker read the sales figure for 2023,joker
Guys please do a review about type 1 fortuner because lot of people buying used fortuner, and what you think about used fortuner
In Pakistan fortuner is about 2cr rupees
I heard next Fortuner is diesel plus hybrid that's give us 22km to 24km averages.
Please cover Gloster Blackstorm vs Fortuner Legendar,
I like both cars, I'm confused which one is better.
one is over priced and the other is Chinese, so is having bad image.
Gloster is arguably a better car if you want the bang for your buck.
Ahh yes , when you have 3 litre engine with 200 bhp , it won't break much
All I can say that neither of these guys ever owned a German brand car in india or a fortuner in india .. having owned both .. u just realise that there is nothing premium about a BMW X1 except it’s price ..
Could you do a ZIGANALYSIS of jeep compass as I am planning to buy and I would be great if you do it
One service on European big brands will cost you 75 to 1lac, compare that with Toyota and you see why people love Toyota
Fortuner's success lies in its resale price and unbothered ownership (unbothered about breakdowns and after purchase expenses). All other things like 'bravado' and 'systumm' etc come as a +
All reviewers talk about the short term benefits of other cars over a Fortuner.
Please do the same discussion 5 years down the line…
Many people will feel very bad, but brother, the simple fact is that Fortuner has become very expensive, although it is based on a pickup, Toyota has launched it by giving only the rear roof and some nice interior. ,,,,,The real meaning is that those who wanted to be sold simply fled the country.
ford and mitsubishi
Leaving aside the reliability and durability of a Toyota, this car does not cost more than Rs 30,,,,32 or at most Rs 35 lakh.
How about the New Prado coming to India next year may be.
Nope. No confirmation about the Prado. For such products India is a low priority market anyway.
Bhaisaab kabhi Gloster ki Blackstorm edition ka bhi review dedo, mujhe lagta hai vo Fortuner se better hai. "
When you go off roading what you need is reliability instead of features. Fortuner does everything better than any suv in India in off roading in its class and other class too
Gloster is a perfect car! value for money car hai ye Fortuner ke jaise nahi ke bas loot macha rakha hai.
Toyota service is tooo good I own a Innova crysta service centre people treat well with the customers
It's beach head market is politicians, who are the least price sensitive. Toyota is monetizing well.
That "Thumka" had me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
All those who never owned one are vomiting here, when you have no issues of giving 32 lakh for a tata with a hyundai transmission and fiat engine but you have issues with a 2.8 ltr engine with all 4x4 tech and bulletproof ownership
Its a bloody Hilux with 2 extra seats.
Audi Q3 is far better for this price..
Ya, I don't like fortuner because its got no fridge and bedroom.
Tamil nadu political Hierarchy is Royal Enfield bullet
That pot hole or speed breaker and speed up i have done with my scorpio many times
Fortuner price is like iPhone in mobile market.
Mitsubishi Pajero sport would be the best replacement of fortuner
Yes, IMO Fortuner is Overhyped and definitely overpriced. In the same price there are other good option as well like MG Gloster etc. those give better value for money.
Mg is a Chinese shit box.
That “uncle” is the same uncle who keeps asking when I’ll have kids.
Ffs
We seem to all be meeting the same uncle. He will then crack an uncomfortable joke we have to laugh at 🤣
I'd buy a Jeep compass 4×4 if looking or a skoda Kodiaq or even vw tiguan.... fortuner is old skool for me
Can't wait for the facelift of the Fortuner.
35 lac is vey justified price for fortuner. Due to over priced fortuner mediocre cars like gloster meridian also selling for high prices
Toyota cracked the code, now they are milking the buyers. For it's potential buyers the fortuner is more than the sum of its parts. Toyota reliability too can be decoded pretty easily.
Simple answer....no other options or no other reliable suv
Very interesting talk..
