This video was recorded at 6 o'clock, on a very cold December morning. I was already out before dawn, so I caught a lot of cold. You can hear it in my voice the effects of a very humid and cold morning. You might want to turn on the subtitles on this one hehe.

@@random120 No problem, I've said this so many times before that I think I should probably make a video explaining it hehe. I pronounce "Oden", it is the Swedish pronounciation of Othin, and the one I'm more familiar with. I was introduced to "Oden" before knowing the Old Norse pronounciation "Óðinn".

I am a pagan, my father (casually) practiced Asatru in the late 90s early 00s, when I was a child (for the record, I do not practice Asatru). I remember having shrines to Odin and Thor in the house, hearing their myths before bedtime, etc. He eventually left that path to become agnostic/athiest (side note: the day he openly expressed that he no longer believed in the gods, there was a massive thunderstorm that caused damage to our neighborhood, I fully believe it was Thor haha). Odin has been a pretty central symbolic figure in my life for as long as I can remember.
Fast forward into my adulthood, I developed breast cancer at 25 years old (I have a rare genetic mutation). The night before my mastectomy, I was so afraid. I've never felt fear like that before. I had a dream that Odin visited me and shared with me the story of how he hung from the world tree. I saw myself hanging from the world tree. It was a dark and terrifying experience, but through that dream, I found an unexpected strength to face the surgery and the healing process. It was painful and probably the worst experience of my life, but through the darkness of that experience I found illumination. In that moment, I felt that the lessons of Odin were clearer to me than ever before.
My point in sharing this story is that your interpretation of Odin in this video resonates with my own experiences so deeply. Same with the other videos I've seen from you. I see that you /know/ these gods and their lore with a special kind of intimacy. It's really amazing and I love your content :)

This is what I've been trying to tell other Asatru people. I honestly dont think you can possibly follow down a path hailing Odin without knowing the evil things he's done. I have and I accept it. I looked at the horrid things Odin has done and look at the evil deeds I've done. But when I look back at myself I wouldn't say I am evil. It's a sense of understanding that nobody is good or evil. With everything Odin has done whether you call it good or evil it had a purpose that led to a positive outcome for him and his tribe. It's a scary lesson to learn if you have to be the leader of anything. Sometimes you have to do fucked up shit for the benefit of the tribe. Even if the action only benefits you. The things you might gain could be useful in the future.

As my interpretation, odin is our mind, and the myths in the poetic edda are riddles that if interpreted correctly, you achieve wisdom and spiritual enrichment. Thinking that the gods are physical is spiritual darkness, the gods are not physical or living in another world, they are here, they represent nature, they represent truth, strength, wisdom, gravity, etc. Odin (our mind) it's known as many names. The saver, the doomer, the corrupt, the just. We must act like the gods in order to be the best version of ourselves.

You want to know who Odin is?
I have a feeling somewhere in between 7th-9th century AD.
The Norse religion & Christianity got mixed up with who he was possibly?
      Check this out!
Esus is another name for Odin.
      The word Esus.
Add a "J" that was later introduced into the Anglo Saxon English alphabet in the 17th century.

You can kind of link these ideas of Odin with the Left Hand Path in many of its aspects, and it kind of shows how easily Odin is taken up as one of the gods of the Left Hand Path. And why not? Odin one of the few deities around who, in some fairly neat but not exact ways, corresponds to the Lucifer archetype that we're familiar with in many ways. Sure he's typecast as the leader of the forces of order, but he's also the god of a chaotic, almost Bacchic mode of divine inspiration, Odr (it's in his namesake, even), he's a patron of outlaws and non-conformists, practices a form of magic that is considered taboo for men to practice, and sacrifices himself for the pursuit of knowledge. Even his whole deal regarding Ragnarok, and the fact that he's gaining knowledge for the sake of avoiding his inevitable demise at Ragnarok, can be seen in terms of cultivating knowledge in order to fight, change or even defy fate.

I met Odin in the woods once, He appeared to me as an old man, I was 28 years young and strong and I feared nothing unto death. But when this old man was walking toward me, I became very fearful and I could not control it. He told me many things about myself that no one else could know, and things about myself that I did not know. His words toward me was very harsh with no mercy, scolding me and I was on my knees crippled with fear unable to even speak. He told me, "Get up and stop pitying yourself." Then he walked into the woods and disappeared. To this day I still don't understand that experience. No! I was not high on drugs or Alcohol.

Then the next day on the news another woman was raped walking from the bus or train through the same park.......hours after the women who had a ghostly encounter.
Maybe the divine spirits and gods can only wake up the most stubborn of us through such harsh ways.....I mean human parents are capable of the same thing, makes me really re think the whole good and evil thing....

Now she claimed from her experience that it seemed Odin had put those distractions as a test to see if she was serious about reaching out to him. She also spoke about how every question she had for him he had asked her in return, but she flet like she had the answer already in her and odin was like asking her to get her to seek out more or think a different way. It appears from many accounts that Odin is tough love, but also compassionate but also a little tricky.....hey im no better right?

Man, great insight. Seen this maybe a year or so ago.. Really, if we're in the image of our gods, then they to went through things we go through and must still go through to maybe eventually become centered.. I grew up only hearing of the Christian faith, through the years questioning things, beginning to listen to other beliefs, iam noticing alot of similarities. Our gods walked the walk, and have left behind lessons to help guide us,, to eventually overcome anything and have control over all our senses. Everyday it seems we learn something new. Those who question life and ask themselves why certain things are the way they are. For instance, iam a peaceful man, I treat others with respect they show me, sometimes ignoring ignorance or joking back,, but what gives another man, power over me, to make him think he can stop me,, ask me dumb questions, if I question his authority, he tries to throw me in a cage?? Why?? Is no better than me..😁

I really respect the impartial knowledge you have to share, this video as well as your video on thursatru and the sinister path have had a large influence on how i follow the Odinic path. I initially thought that in nondualism; embracing my addiction & self destructive behavior would lead me to great enlightenment, which it sort of did; but it also lead me too realize that with the absence of order, chaos & darkness dominated my life; it almost broke me. Until i realised that it wasn't about embracing the chaos, but coming to realize that chaos around and within me has the limitless potential to create, just as it has the same limitless potential for destruction without order. Its a matter of learning to work with it by establishing and structure to further grow and create. I try to stay faithful too tribalism; but my path to following Odin is heavily influenced by thursatru as well; i know this path will continue to be an uneasy one, but i am finally reshaping the chaos within me because i have finally found order and purpose, I've revived my love to relentlessly pursue wisdom, ive learned to accept the nature of events and take accountability of my consequences make the best out of it.

Sorry for being 2 years late but this is the first time I'm hearing Shani ( Vedic/ Hindu version of Saturn) being considered one of the Rudras. So could you please provide any scriptural reference? But yes crows and ravens are Shani's vehicle definitely. Although I've heard Shani's brother Yama/ Kala has been mentioned as a Rudra rarely.
Anyway Shiva is the chief of Rudras that much is certain.

    Dear Arith
Thanks a lot for this wonderful video. I would like to add another aspect though. By slaying Ymir and creating Midgard Odin manifests a reality that is to his liking but due to the laws of nature (the Norns live directly on Yggdrasil not in one of the 9 worlds) everything that comes into existence has to decay and end at some point. Now since we are all part of Midgard and most of Odin’s unsavory acts are aimed at staving off or even preventing Ragnarök it could be argued that while he obviously does these things to gain knowledge and power, he also does them to actually save the world, well his world of course. I think in the light of the views you’ve presented in this video this adds even more tension to the fascinating figure called Allfather, Bölverkr, Fjölnir… well you get my drift…

Although raised in a judeo christian family I had always been drawn toward paganism and odin since a very young age. Ive never associated odin with jehova I have always been able to see the differences. As I've grown older I realise my relationship with odin has shown through my own sacrifices for wisdom and self improvement. I've always looked at self sacrifice as giving up a part of your life for the better. Not suicide. To me its like quitting smoking cigarettes not doing drugs or drinking moderately stop hanging around a rough crowd. I truly have gone through dark times and come out the other end a better stronger wiser. Symbolicly sacrificing an eye to see the world in a different way to focus on what matters. Sometimes i feel like a completely different person than I was 5 years ago. Since being able to look back and relate my transformation with characteristics of Odin its helped me stay on my path of spiritual rediscovery. It's not uncommon for me to see two ravens about while out walking. This helps me feel closer to odin like hes watching my progress. Since stumbling upon your channel a few weeks ago I knew right away you have knowledge far greater than almost anyone on TH-cam or any video I've watched about the gods, old ways, runes. and I have learned alot from you. You do so much more than just read stanzas from the Eddas. And I Thank you for that. You are a great teacher. Please continue to do what you do friend.

Very interesting video, and definitively made me think a lot. Simply put, two things can be true at once. On one hand, in the Havamal we get a fatherly figure who gives solid advice on proper conduct, honour, and even love and romance. He goes out of his way to test the honour and good deeds of others, and often shows up as a mentor. He has gone to incredible lengths not just to learn, but to teach, and often puts himself in harms way to do so.
On the other hand, he is often portrayed as a sad and lonely old man, who's quite possibly gone mad... He is described as untrustworthy and even deceitful. In the mythology, he often starts wars and conflicts just to see who will win, and once I even read that he even killed one of his own followers so he could take their soul to Valhalla.
    Now, here's my personal interpretation:
I see Odin as a tragic as a somewhat misunderstood wizard. A lot of the people who describe him as bad are often writing from the perspective of those who have lost to him, not necessarily those that he favours. He is a god of wisdom, and therefore the mind, and more specifically, the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind can be real scary, so of course this explains his dark and brooding nature. I see him as a mentor the shows up to guide us through darkness. Not to hold our hand, but to help us explore our fears and reconnect with a primal power deep within us. To sit in the darkness until it no longer bothers us, then we go deeper. He is a god of death and rebirth, and I believe that he sends tests our way so that we can grow from the adversity - He is a war god, after all... I do not believe that Odin will just give you warm fuzzy feelings and I do not believe his darker aspects should be overlooked. Only a fool would expect this from him. But at the same time I do not believe that he is entirely selfish and "bad" especially considering myths are not meant to be taken literally, but contain a hidden teaching (which is a whole other can of worms) The point is, Odin can be dark - real dark - and has a cunning, clever and manipulating nature. I experience him as a patient, quiet, stoic old man and father, but on all the gods I would not want to get on his bad side. He represents raw, primitive, vital human existence, and harsh truths that some would be forgiven for mistaking as nihilism. He exposes the hard to swallow pills of life, and will show us things most people would want to bury their heads in the sands about. However he clearly does this for the greater good, as a harsh truth is better than a lie, and finding your own power out in the dark and cold is better than being weak. Like I said, two things can be true at once. I believe the fatherly, noble, warrior king aspects of him are just as much a part of him as the dark, wild, untamed and maddening aspects of him. They are two sides of the same coin that is the god Odin.

I love the honesty, the imperfections of the gods, the humility, the grey areas that reflect the human condition. The gods are not all powerful all knowing and benevolent, but not the complete opposite either, they merely exist as they are, neither good nor bad, just nature doing as it does, just as we do every day. Much love to you all.

Not to mention how Adolf Hitler claimed he was possessed by Wotan , and this fuelled his, love for the,German people and their legacy. It seems prophetic that we see Nazism and Paganism emerging again recently and challenging Fundamental religion. These old Germanic tribes defeated the Holy Roman Empire by coming out of the Alps and joining together. Jung's analysis of the Black sun and occult knowledge is itself a resurrection of mankind's latent inner powers and workings.

Udin reminds me constantly of the necessity of sacrifice. It is impossible to gain without giving. This holds true down to the tiniest molecule. It is a central principal in physics that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I think much of the all father's story embodies this principle. You MUST give to receive. Even if you steal something you give away your honor, and some of your humanity. Also the idea that knowledge can cause a great deal of harm to the knower seems to be a theme. Science has proven this as well. The more intelligent you are the more likely you are to be depressed or anxious because you can truly SEE things as they are (pretty messed up) Sight is central to Udins character. I think him giving up his eye for wisdom is a metaphor: if we wish to be wise we cannot rely too much on what we see. The eyes are easily deceived.

also in arabic, Odin means I am in debt or I have debt upon myself - spelling Odeen -> in arabic أدين
now the nice part: when you say in the name of Odin, you are exactly saying in arabic, in the name of religion = باسم الدين
so religion = din = دين
it is the debt that we owe to our spirit and holy soul. this is why we have to read, dig, reach, and activate our chakras, reach kundalini and balance our caduceus within of us.
in the north mythology, Odin made 2 major sacrifices, one that has to do with sacrificing one of his eye, to attain knowledge and wisdom
but this sacrifice was incomplete and his ego stayed intact to his subconsciousness. along with the philosophy of right and left hemisphere, the left eye being the materialistic philosophy and the right eye being the spiritual soul, so he apparently sacrificed the wrong one.
and the other sacrifice, is the first ever crucifixion, and that was the optimal sacrificed and last one he made,
where he sacrificed himself to himself, on a tree, while holding the staff, same one that of moses, the kundalini staff.

If Odin comes to you, it may, just may be an easier ride, or not. He was always respectful and made it clear he was there for me when I needed him. I don't know if I'm ready to reconnect at this point, sadly. Not ready yet. You made a very good point, he is not all light but he is both light and darkness as that is how we also are. In the "image" of the gods, we are the same in nature. Odin may not have sacrificed himself for anyone else but he definitely paved the way for us. Odin may be dark and destructive but we are also. There is a lesson in everything, so they say. Since I met Odin, I have definitely changed and become more self centred but also much tougher. Not always good, not always "acceptable."

we have to remember that as in all polytheistic panteons, the gods and the godesses are as complex as the mortals themself. with all the shortcommings that all motal humans have. for better or for worth. nobody is perfect and all we can do is to try our best.

Great explanation, coming from someone who isn’t on a pagan path myself. Kindve on a crossroads of sorts on a personal level, paganism has always been an extreme curiosity for me and something I’ve researched heavily many years of my life. I’m new to the ways of the Norse people and Norse paganism, but I’ve found it immensely interesting to research and read about. Your videos are very informative and I enjoy watching and learning

It sounds lile every other religions allegories once you study hermetics enough. Tipheret being the heart and also the sun and the christ consciousness that you obtain once you crucify the lower nature.... Which brings on dark night of the soul (mental anf emotional anguish like you described) this is the fast path towards enlightenment.... Braking thtough the lower ego by shattering it. Pr the slower path throughout many many lifetimes of the same hard lessons streched out teaching you love and power slowly blooming higher consciousness. I think it's so awesome that this parallels nearly every religious mythos ever.

14:28 Odin did not at all accept his death. He built an army of the honored battle dead to fight in Ragnarok. He has Fenrir chained up to try and prevent Ragnarok.
