    Odin has always been for me not a god of the natural world, like of the sky or water or earth, but a god of the inner self, the mind, knowledge, madness, humor, and sacrifice. He is a god of the absurd. A god of existential dread, and a figure of a young man's desire for experience placed over the backdrop of old age. He is the yin yang, youth and senility, life and death, both at times childish and petty while also fatherly and wise. He is both man and god, self-affirming and self-annihilating.

I was looking for my great grandfather's hat (since I have his staff), which was brown and quite old, but I liked it and it had a sentimental value to me. But someone stole it away, so I got a new hat for me, and aside from the connotations of the colour blue, that is my favourite colour :D Take care friend!

    I've emersed myself into the philosophies of the Trika and Krama traditions of Kashmiri Shaivism for about 3 years now and I feel that it illuminates the trinitarian mysteries of Odin/Shiva/Hermes/Toth that befuddle the Western seeker pained by Christianity's claims of Trinity. In short, I'm not convinced that writers like Snorri were putting a christian overlay on non-christian mysticism but hiding the mysticism in a way that the average Christian would write off. Tattvas 3-5 are Lord Sadashiva that works through the the feminine power of will Iccha-Shakti, Lord Ishvara that works through the feminine power of knowledge Jnana-Shakti, and Lord Suddha-Vidya that works through the feminine power of acting Kriya-Shakti. These masc/fem (consciousness/power) dualities are universal forces that are beyond human intelligence (Buddhi, tattva 14), but pervade all but the first two tattvas. In-short, the saying that consciousness uses our intelligence to know itself applies here and is why manifest reality cannot be omniscient. Omniscience is infinite by definition and would be incapable of localizing or categorizing, so if Odin is manifest, he cannot be omniscient.
    I completely understand the distructive nature of seeking knowledge on familial relations too. I can't speak for European life, but in America "expert culture" overlooks the importance of relationships and destroys many families and communities through arrogance. I'm guilty, as evidenced by the above. Knowledge is great, knowledge is power, knowledge destroys, but without relations, there can be no renewal.

    Always great to hear your insights, for me, especially regarding Odin
    Ive always struggled with Odin. Many others have said that "Odin is how you find paganism" and other such things, which although i never believed (because i came to Paganism through Thor) it did at times gnaw at me
    As i grow older and more sure of what makes me call myself a Pagan of course i care a lot less about what others think makes one a Pagan, by which i mean i stay certain of my belief, but i do like to hear others
    I also long ago abandoned the idea that to be a "true pagan" i must know and respect "all" the Gods
    I mostly just chat with Thor or Sif, and assume if it is someone else i should be "speaking" to, they will help me connect, and that seems to work for me
    It is, of course, Odin's negative aspects that always made me keep him at a distance, yet at the same time i always wanted to embrace him because i too seek wisdom
    But it was also my understanding that what we think of as "the gods" is a construct - a very important one of course - but a construct nonetheless
    Without such a construct it becomes very hard to know any of the gods
    Much love to you Arith, and all seekers of Wisdom and Pagan understanding, wherever you may be
    Keep vigilant, the world is changing and only those who can see the truth can possibly try to defend it, we need to stop fighting with others who see the world differently, and make them our allies, we willl need them in the next few years

He is full of ego, hell just to even get into his discord you have to pay through his patreon. He comes off very cool and supportive at first in his videos, but the real jacob comes out quickly. You can choose to call me a liar and a hater, but that does not change facts, i caution any norse pagan especially just starting to take heed with his information given, if not just avoid it completely. He lets for real nazis hang out in his community and events, he claims to want to offer people a community but paywalls it behind his patreon, he keeps on delaying the hall because he's garbage with money, proclaims himself a gothi after 6 months of being pagan, he refuses any gender-related discourse with the excuse that he he perceives it as political and non-pagan, he constantly uses folkist/nazi dogwhistles and promotes nazi ideas like an ancient white race from the north, he's not really with us here in reality land anymore citing his belief of mars being mankind's origin and the literal existence of mythical creatures and characters, he refused to not hold gatherings during the pandemic and left mask-use and participation up to individual choice which is irresponsible, his gatherings are also all paid and there have been some really disturbing events like him cutting open the arm of a guy who wanted to swear a blood oath to him and couldn't manage to do it on his own.
      I'm not even through all the issues with this guy. He does great videos, he makes quality content, he appears like a really nice guy, but it just takes a little bit of digging and paying attention to notice the rot.

  • @nillsknillz
    @nillsknillz ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for the video, very interesting analysis.
    What I've gathered while reading into norse mythology is that Odin himself is purely driven by fear. He asked himself multiple times why he is the way he is, even doubting his methods in acquiring knowledge from time to time. It's the fear of loosing Idunns apples and his (and his kin, the ase) eternal life. Losing his kin due to a war to the vanir. Losing his control due to a greater knowledge possessed by another being (mostly the giants). He told Heimdall to produce half human, half ase people so they grew strong and could defend the ase during ragnarok.
    In Odins stories we can learn many things. Even his ultimate pursue towards gaining all knowledge couldn't save him in the end. His fears lead him to actions, sealing his own downfall. He couldn't impede his own fate because he tried to change the world instead of changing his own self. This is in my opinion the greatest knowledge odin himself never could attain.

      Bro, Odin is far more than this. For 9 days he traveled into Ginnungagap, the vastness ocean. Whatever he saw and understood it definitely shaped all life for the better, he literally brought civilisation to the war driven people by creating poetry and far more other things.

    • @nickstebbens
      @nickstebbens ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this is, imo, a stupid and semantic argument - you could rationalize away all actions as caused by fear of non action, but that wouldn’t be a very accurate description in many cases. Odin doesn’t seem very fearful at all

    I think the lesson in Odin's pursuit of knowledge is that knowledge is such a thing that requires a character that can't be too fond of comfort and is willing to transgress social conventions, norms, and roles to acquire, knowledge that grants one true insight into the nature of reality and human nature and subsequently the power to shape one's reality to ones favor with this insight. I also think a lesson in Odin's pursuit of knowledge there is no sacrifice too great to acquire the power to determine one's own fate. Another lesson from Odin's pursuit of knowledge related to my first point and maybe at best a reiteration of the first lesson, pragmatic knowledge- (knowledge you can affect and shape the material world and human evolution with) is sacrilegious, thus the pursuit of knowledge for Odin is the very basis of the European Scientific institutions that gave rise to the Faustian Man and Profane and Inert Cosmos of modernity.

    If Odin was the omniscient being described in later writings, he would never have had to do all the self sacrificing and deception of Jotuns in order to obtain that esoteric ancient knowledge. If he sees everything, and knows everything, it would stand to reason that he would not have need for any other gods in the pantheon like Heimdallr.
    To believe otherwise is a misconception

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well said. If he had been originally an omniscient being the great majority of the myths concerning Odin would not make sense and would be worthless. In fact, taking into account the negative impacts of Odin's actions, if he were an omniscient being it would just make him an evil being, purposely causing harm to obtain something he already had.

    A re-examination of morals and ethics, rather than a transgression. The forming of a new compact. Testing the limits. Understanding, and refining.
    Nine months in the womb of the hag Ceridwen, to take the Awen from her cauldron. The world is dead. It is time to be reborn. Freyja talks in her sleep. The new dawn approaches. It takes courage to enjoy it.
    Everyone is a warrior in battle. There are those who survive, and never give up, they are without fear, and they reach Odin, and there are those who do not have such spirit and faith, and they simply die, and turn to mulch. Half go to Odin. They are the heroes. Freyja can have the common men if that is what she wants. Whatever rocks your boat zus.
    Solomon asked for wisdom. There comes a point when there is no point in learning anymore. Knowledge still comes, but it can't be communicated. Then it is time to develop patience.

    Love the new dark mysterious look, Arith! People sometimes say “Good luck / with that…”, and sometimes it’s sincerely meant with goodness or fortune, while other times it’s a disguise for cursing people to their demise (for various psychological reasons of projection, I presume). I find it’s not always so easy to know the intention behind such a short quick-witted phrase. But I am certain that either way the correct and best response is always a sincere ‘Thank you’. This testifies to one’s own authenticity and sincerity, leading by example towards such virtuous ideals or goals
    It’s also interesting how luck, or Loki, might not necessarily always have much or anything to do with this saying at all, as a blessing or a curse (knowing what we know of Loki, however, it’s more likely charged with the undertones of a curse). Take dice, for example (like in the boardgame, Solaris, that I designed which combines reconfigured poker & chess; link below; currently seeking publishers/sponsors etc., and has been submitted to the Canadian TV show, Dragons’ Den, for the 2023 season). How do we know it’s not actually the Holy Spirt of Christianity working through dice or cards etc.?
    I suppose it all depends on the results and one’s own worldview. Either way, I thought it an interesting enough connection to make a point of, for what it’s worth
    May 2023 bring you good fortunes & cheer, man. And… good luck!

    My Family/tribe has this tradition for ancient oral traditions. (One feather can of course turn into 5 chickens, I'm well aware of that). I have been Asatru and Christian my whole life. When i got baptized as baby i got a Mjølner/Thors' Hammer in silver in a silver necklace like a amulet. I have never weared a cross but that amulet and im confirmed and go to church often. I have even baptized some.
    Just want to add some:
    The Viking; "Harald Bluetooth" was driven by the wisdom of Odin. He was indeed a manifestation of Odins wisdom. Odin is the only of the Norse Gods who talked about a higher "God" (call it what u want), cause he have seen and knows. Thats why he is the God of wisdom and the king of the Norse Gods. Ty Harald! Our Danish founder.

    Hey. Just saw your last post on FB. I'm sorry to hear it. Both about the virus as well as those that have left you. May Odin give you strength to do what you must. I was going to FB in search of ways to sit down for a chat from time to time, if you have such liberty with your free time, of course. I have reached a blockade on how the Gods, or Fates, affect a person's life, thus hopefully finding a clearer picture over the duties, responsibilities or what other attachments may come, of one interfering in the first person's life, one way or another, and thus interfering (????) in divine will. Tibetan cultures talk constantly about karma, and, even though I've read about this important consequence years ago, only last summer did the realisation actually came: every person's karma is a result of their life so far (and maybe more). Interfering in one's life, to help or alleviate, means interfering with their karma. It left me transfixed. What implications are there? I've read somewhere, long time ago, may be utter bs as far as I can attest to it, that in native american cultures, when you save someone's life you became responsible for them. And I still remember not understanding what "responsible for them" might mean. Now my beautiful brain asks me "Didn't that actually refer to taking upon yourself, as being done by you, any acts committed by that person from that day onwards, be them good or bad? Or on the contrary, if the Fates said they should die, and you save their life, you've created a disruption that will only extrapolate until natural order is restored, and all other threads of destinies affected by your action fall back on track?" and the answers there hopefully lead to a better understanding of how important are our choices? For now I hold the belief that we have little to no choice when it comes to the path we walk on in life. The path is already laid out in front of us. How we walk the path, that's up to us. But that's hardly something new. I need more answers. Yes, I know, I am also one of the many who come and ask things of you, and for that I do apologise. I truly wish we had met at better times. Peace

    Incredibly thought provoking at the end. I can think of many people, indeed many cultures around the world, who would benefit from this introspection about self-aggrandizement and seeking knowledge... but none the less, applicable immediately for me as well. I've always strongly felt that it's foolish to spend too much time studying history here in our day, because at the core - it is belief. It's scripture, essentially, and the fact that sources correlate isn't verification of any kind at all - if anything it just makes finding the truth harder... ...but there are a lot of people who buy in, because they expect it of themselves and others, not to question, to seek the right answer, and stand above others after they attain it - as a symbol themselves.

    Arith, with respect, could you correct me if in your understanding I'm wrong about what to explain right now here? I've been building my spiritual path, so any exchange is appreciated. As Thor wouldn't have killed the snake/dragon that feeds the vital force of the universe, and that might have been an add to the Myths by christians hand isn't possible that the blind seek for power at any cost would have given in the same way to the one who would be wisest of the old gods? I'm asking because I've been seeking myself and as far as I can see, and is not that much, Odin seriously feels able to see the future and the past. Every small connection that I'm able to have with Odin shows a care about what is said/pass to me to guide me throught situations that if those situations were explained exactly as they are, for sure i would have giving up. After 3 years i have the feeling that Odin know what is to come and how i would react to with the personality i have at the moment, able to find the right words so to make me stronger, to change my thoughts to face what is to come. English isnt my first language, hopefully my post can be understood. Your work have been very important to me all this 3 years, im grateful I found it. Thank you for reading!

      @ArithHärger  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Since the symbol of the serpent (in pagan contexts) represents knowledge, ancestral wisdom and the feminine magic arts (related to both ancestral knowledge and magic mysteries) its destruction in Old Norse myths can be both a Christian interpretation as well as pagan. The fight of Thor against the serpent isn't wholy Christian, but an allusion of the fight-dance between the Sky fertility god with the Earth Goddess, which together in chaos create life and fertility (order from chaos). Thor isn't the only Norse god related to the Serpent. In some Vendel period helmets we see helmet-plates with the representation of Odin with a serpent, and in the Osberg tapestry we have a grove of serpents and hanged men from a tree (in relation to the cult of Odin). The serpent was also a symbol of wisdom. The destruction of the serpent in a pagan contexts is in reference to the destruction of balance and the destruction of the protection of life itself. In other words, we could see this as a fervent search for wisdom and power, and such wisdom and power, if not applied carefully and correctly, may be very destructive. It is possible that in a pagan version the death of the World Serpent represented the beginning of Ragnarök: the very power that holds and protects life is destroyed, opening up the way for chaotic and destructive forces to take over and destroy all life. Of course this motif was highly used to convey Christian teachings and religious ideologies in later medieval icelandic literature, but the "pagan core" of it may be indeed the representation of imbalance when one seeks to control the forces of nature, which will only result in one's own destruction and the destruction of others.

    Thank you once again for one of your deep dives into the gods. As a new-ish pagan, I have always had trepidation when it comes to interacting with Odin. I do not feel his call nor his pull. I have often seen him as a god of wisdom and knowledge over a supreme deity of sorts.
    I am much more in tune with Thor. He is of the Earth and makes me feel more connected to the natural world. When I feel the need to converse with a deity even closer to magic and nature, I feel that Freyja listens the best to my calls. As someone who appreciates and calls to the gods but is more concerned with Animistic properties of day to day respect for all living things, I find the traditional motives of Odin to obtain, gain, and frankly take knowledge to run counter to my spiritual views of respecting all and coming to knowledge through osmosis as friendly relationships are formed with Others.
    Thank you once again, and I hope your recovery from Covid is going well.

    Interesting. Ever since I read the phrase "Odin is the god of frenzy", that's how I describe him, even though I don't perceive him as such all the time. That reminds me how one can get excited about something, and then they get hyped about it, and then after they've got it, the excitement slowly fades. I get that when I'm going to see my favorite band in concert 😂
    Now about wisdom, I believe having a lot cannot only make you selfish, but misunderstood as well. For starters, you can't have a normal conversation anymore. I've seen many people expand on random facts that only get a mention, on conversations about something mundane, like work. Those unfortunately, are very lonely people, whether by choice or not, and as such don't really understand the concept of listening when in a conversation. Wisdom is cool, but even Odin seems to favour wisdom that comes in handy, rather than random facts about whatever. Also, facts will probably never make a sweet talker, so m'yeah, watch out for that.
