Just finished this final episode. Thanks J., Helena, and Paul for taking the time to make these. I had watched KoH not long ago and it inspired some intrigue in me for the Crusades and characters depicted. Your mini series has further educated me and inspired me to continue learning about these people.

Go out of your way not to offend Muslims, by "forgetting" historical facts.
But at the same time invent facts to offend Christianity
Sounds a lot like the summary of the past years...

Christians really could take some advice from Muslims. Mainly, stop turning the other cheek

When I woke up the first thing I shared with my wife was the amazing experience of listening to you guys. A few videos had laid out the ground work for me, like the short 5 minute video from Prager University on what the Middle Ages were really like. Also saw a few with Bill Warner contrasting the Crusades and Jihad over the last 1,400 years. Your series, however, was a goldmine. I went looking for copper, but found gold. Now I feel ready to actually watch the movie :) Thank you again for amazing work.

You were lucky to find one of the only 2 historically accurate PragerU videos I've seen. The other one is about the cause of the Civil War.

Wonderful series! Thank you so much for making them! And you are right. This movie is quite hostile to Christianity and whitewashes Islam. Good that you pointed that out! Looking forward to the future videos posted on your channel.

Real Crusades History Its distressing how much of media is anti west and anti Christianity, we need people like you writing the script for films and video games! I remember your video on the assassin creed game and the anti Christianity stuff makes all these games and films so dull to watch and play. This stuff matters because policies are made based on what the public and those in charge believe about history. I really enjoy your channel though! Your videos are really well made and informative, and they don't go on for too long as well :)

Totally agree. I so fucking tire of listening people even in my family claiming assassins creed is a great game. And idk why they made evil templars in the first place when they were a really pure organism and way more interesting than the assassins than again have mentality of a modern day atheist...

I've been slowly watching many of your videos and I find them all very enlightening and well done. I thought this series on "Kingdom of Heaven" to be particularly good. If I might make a suggestion, a similar treatment of the film "Arn: the Knight Templar" would be very welcome. Thanks for the hard work and dedication you put into this!

It's wrong to denounce Islam because it is a 'peaceful' religion, and it's unsafe to denounce Islam because it is a violent religion.
It seems we have a problem here.

What a fantastic series. The closing comments about being grateful for Ridley Scott I 100% agree with. I am a Japanese-American software engineer that didn't know anything about anything about anything with regards to the Crusades. I'm now a low-key Crusades buff and own over 50 books on it. I owe that to this movie. I unabashedly love the Director's Cut. I have no religious dog in any of these debates, but I saw the film as more anti-organized religion than solely anti-Christian. You do raise a good point about how the good Muslims are shown as devout and the good Christians are skeptical cynics.
Would be it self-serving if I asked you to do a feature on my favorite (and most underrated/least-talked-about-badass) historical figure? The savior of Tyre? My namesake? Cheers.

The movie depicted Knights Hospitaller and Balian, who are historically hardcore Christian believers, into doubters of their religion. Which is highly ridiculous. And the chants of Knights Templar going "Gods will it!" with every chance they get is pretty comedic, in a stupid way.
The movie did peakmy interest into the Crusaders, Knights and the overall Holy War history so it did served its purpose. They really gone out of their way, the whole nine yards, to make Saladin cool as hell, .

I went into this movie with the understanding that it would be full of half-truths and untruths. The first time I saw it (granted I didn't know nearly as much about the time period as you three do, however I had read some about the period), I rolled my eyes at several places.
However, I watched it for a second time and every-time thereafter, I find it to be a very good movie. Good story, great visuals The scene when the Army of Jerusalem arrived on the battlefield was by far my favorite shot of the movie.
People who watch Hollywood movies and take them as historically accurate are ignorant. Same with the movie "The Patriot." Personally I love that movie. If you watch it with history in mind, you will rip your hair out, but as a movie and story, it is very good. In my opinion.

Question: Why Scott decided to use for the banners of Jerusalem the combination of blue and gold? The medieval reason for using the silver and gold is to point out the importance of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, this silver&gold combination has only the Papacy, because it is in contrary to heraldic rules. Why he used the blue field? Blue is connected to the Virgin Mary, but in this case it doesn't make sense in my opinion. The German order had the Virgin Mary as their patron, but also they has not been using blue. What to you think?

The small ceramic exploding globes that you mention are extant. The Royal Ontario Museum has specimens. Probably, as you say, they were originally filled with Greek fire, though later they were charged with gunpowder and used as grenades.

I enjoyed this series a lot. I have a request. It doesn't have much to do with the Crusades, but could you please review the historical accuracy of the movie 'Name of the Rose', which is about the Inquisition in the 14th century CE?

Scott actually shows in this parody that the patriarch is the smart guy since he knows that in order to burn a body that contains 70% water you need a proper modern gas crematory to run for 3hrs/ body...so he is much better at math than the nihilist knight.

  • @tldr7159

Just a note, this is a movie not a documentary so keep in mind if it had been accurate to the core, it´d been very boring, especially parts such as the ransoming as it was way too complicated for a near 3 hour movie.
Also very odd you guys never mentioned, Sybillas, son, or any of the scenes..this was only from the theatrical version. Anyone who´s seen the extended edition loves them, and they explain so much the theatrical version does nto, same with the extra material. If you´re going to do a kingdom of heaven review this detailed, you really should had included that.
very cool concept, but extremly disappointing you guys didn´t even review the WHOLE movie, and only 2/3 of it as thats all the thatrical version is, while the extended version is for people into the movie and time period.
Also the comment you made about the ballistas and siege towers was "pure hollywood" is wrong. This was indeed not used, but in this movie Balian is a genuis of an engieneer, and it´s been proven that it is posible to use counter weights like this, also in this time period. Did they do it? Most likely not, but its not pure hollywood as you stated...
So many inaccuracies in this. Its basic physics how a siege tower could tilt or break apart. Anyhow, if you get the chance, please do the extended version..It make this average theatrical movie SO MUCH BETTER . I´ve been a huge fan of the crusades and time period for many years, so really enjoyed listening to this, also the pilgrim version in the movie and all th e documentaries as possible i coudl find.
I just really wish you had done the extended version... it´d had been much better.

well the guy made the duelist .. then went down hill little by little.... not even worth talking about historically. sure he sells his shit... and causes so many of us to have to explain realities..... if just one time he would use his money to do good, ie make something resembling history it would be epic.

+Robert Freid (ComradeDimitri101) I remember watching braveheart for the first time and everyone in the room at the end credits just looked at each other in disgust!? we felt very uncomfortable about being english!? Trauma based mind control at its best!? i think the 90's film industry had a huge campaign on our minds for my generation!? I always watch films now from an objective point of view! i almost joined the army after watching "Saving private Ryan"...

    • @robertfreid2879
      @robertfreid2879 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Nelly Boltram. Same here, I remember those 90s and even 2000s films that had a huge influence on my viewpoints on history. Not just films, but video games and tv shows. Video games like the earlier _Call of Duty_ series (the ones that were set during the WWII-era) and the earlier _Assassin's Creed_ games. And tv shows like _Band of Brothers_ and what not... Not just video games, films and tv shows. But some rather poorly researched books as well, books like _Hitler's Pope_. Thankfully, I did research into the subject and found out the truth about Pope Pius the 12th and Nazi Germany. That he was NOT "Hitler's Pope" as many say he was...
