- Not long now until this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard! Even though the official Timed Shootout started in 2011, there has always been a fastest run up the FOS Hill each year. All the way back to 1993.
This is your chance to watch every single one of them back, including Martin Brundle's then-current F1 car, a six-wheel Williams and a Ferrari Can-Am car to name but a few.
Let us know which of these is your favourite.

Just a tip; when you do a video like this you NEVER put a music on it. Just the car sounds are enough!!!
It was probably only recording they happened to have available.
Sadly, I don't think they have a Raw Recording of the FW07's Run :(
These are all clips from live broadcasts/streams, so it is what it is. Unfortunately.
@@simeonyves5940the FW07 done this faster than Solus GT.
Commentary 🗣️
The crowd’s reaction to the McMurtry says it all. That little thing is a rocket.
I love the rocket exhaust illusion from the fan, makes it look even faster.
Imagine going back to 1999 and showing the video to the F1 team... They would think the Martians made contact, for sure.
I was there to see it in person during 2022, and man, that car was literally the definition of 'blink and you'll miss it!'
Such an amazing machine.
@@michaeleaster1815the Spierling has Mia Taylor's Bentley Speed 8 engine in it and has 1090bhp.
@@AlanFormula12022 No it doesn't. The Bentley had a four litre twin turbo V8, the McMurtry has two 746kW electric motors.
Those group c jags were no joke. Absolute rocket ship even 30 years past its era.
No doubt👏
I never realised how many hillclimbs Justin Law has won. Legend of Goodwood
That jag is fast
He’s the Law of the land
Ohhh. That J. Law
Now I understand why those Silk Cut Jags are always so popular on the static displays at Goodwood
The Le Mans Jag with the spoiler barely hanging on is a sight to behold.
And still winning the shoutout too..what a driving skill by Justin Law
wonder what that cost
@@04yzfr6 probably thousands if not millions 😂
I was there in 1999 when Nick did that run.. he went past us at 143 .. the whole crowd was shouting .. absolutely stunning
So cool! The camera does not do it justice!
I chuckled a bit when I noticed Nick had to come back for three years running before he could get a dry run.
@@hanzzarkov7690 I thought exactly the same thing!
The time still holds up well today.
I was there in 2022 for the McMurty Speirling, it was shockingly fast, and the fan running at max made it sound like a mini jet fighter, people were gasping as it tore by.
Only 3 wet tracks in 30 years!! Not what I expected based on watching the British GP every year since then 😅
Better ratio than LeMans and Nürburgring 😂
Lord March owns a Weather manipulation machine. They even have them in vineyards in Armenia of all places.
The 1999 f1 causing a wind vortex literally sucking tree branches like a tornado is amazing
Worth noting that the VW IDR did a 39 seconds run on the Saturday quali in 2019.
That Pike's Peak Celica looks and sounds absolutely furious
@@Piface2099 look up his runs in his other car, a Toyota Tacoma. Ho-lee moley.
That Silk Cut Jaguar is, and forever will be ICONIC
ETERNALLY THANKFUL FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO!!!! AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BEGINNING OF THE FESTIVAL OF SPEED
What Day Is It?
Hello Goodwood, please this year show all the timing splits. Please show all the cars. Couldn't you create a series of highlights showing different era's. Fastest car up to 1920, Fastest car up to 1950, Fastest car up to 1970, Fastest car up to 1990, 1990 to present. Thankyou for your hardwork, I'm just some dude from Australia who really appreciates any car from any era......this is a highlight every year for me.......
Heidfeld's run in '99 is still the most spectacular. He was tonking it, and you can visibly see that. That car wanted to snap away from him constantly.
There are just so many outstanding cars driving fast. I have to go there in the near future to see this live
See Nick in 1999 unbelievable fast (first year of attending Goodwood )wouldn’t miss it for anything
now THIS is a great video. and all of them are but this one is fantastic. thanks for taking the time.
thanks for the festival, would love to see it in person. so much heritage.
Really nice UI elements in the early 2010s and those onboards were amazing. Really would like to see a return to live timing and splits on screen when these things run up the hill.
What a great course!
cool to see as time went modified everyday cars started being able to keep up with old f1
Not really tho that 41 second lap is pretty far clear of just about everything and u can see how unstable and shaky the car is with it being so bumpy
Watching the marshal encouraging Martin Brundle up the hill is a joy to behold. It's fantastic to let your excitement get the better of you sometimes. 😉
Thank you Goodwood!
The starting line man’s reaction to the McMurty is hilarious! It never gets old seeing people watch cars go that fast off the line for the first time
Nick and Justin are just insane drivers of beautiful art and sound pieces of motoring history 🙃. I look forward every year for the jaguar to run
Justin Law deserves a knighthood for services to motorsport for his efforts over the years.
That 1997 run makes me feel OLD. I remember watching Nick in F1 10 years later when I was growing up.
I can never get over the McMurty. It just looks like you're watching the video in fast forward.
i thought they fast forwarded the footage as a promotional stunt initially, definitely need to see more of this thing, much more!
That McMurtry is insane. The combo of the unbelievable speed and that wind noise is just incredibly badass. Also, shoutout to Nick Heidfeld for that 1999 run!
What McLaren did in the late 90's was the dream of all hillclimb fan: modern F1 in hillclimb!
Martin Brundle’s run was amazing to watch live (can’t believe it was 30 years ago 😳) - it was his race car and still set up for Silverstone the week before! It was visibly so much faster, violent and on edge than any of the other cars that day. Infinitely better than watching the current drivers doing donuts 🙄.
can we PLEASE have every Justin Law run!!
The only event won by F1 cars with 6 wheels (2 at the front), 6 wheels (2 at the back) and twin chassis?
All amazing racing cars😊
amazing to see the lotus 88 in action
Graham Wight totally awesome drive & pilot. Brilliant
So...
No one can beat Nick Heidfeld 3rd streak consecutive title with an old F1 car and 6 title by single driver and single manufacturer set by Justin Law! Both are different beast 🔥
You can talk about that boring record breaking car, but for me it's about the driver skillset (shown by their achievements and consistency in Goodwood fest which is Nick's and Justin's)
I never could wrap my head around nick’s record in the formula1 and never thought it could be matched. Also it blows my mind at how powerful these electric and hybrid cars have become they hold many world records now that were previously unmatched. This year 2024…there’s an electric minivan that’s been crushing everything!
Every year the crowd doubles ❤
The music on the 1996 run had me thinking I was playing cruisin world on my N64.
There's just something special about the silk cut jags. Gives me the tingles downstairs as James may would say
10:42 Wow, I had no idea that Super GT cars had been up the hill! That's a long way to ship a racecar.
@@SmallBlogV8 I remember the first time I used that car in Gran Turismo 4 and it was a beast. Very cool to see it being chucked up the hill.
I thought at the time the Solus GT was underwhelming, this just confirms that! Those group C jags are something else though, that chasm in technology and they're still quicker!
Honorable mention to the Gould GR18 for sending it so hard. Dude was driving at 100% the entire time
The P34 doing a 6 wheel drift 🤯🤯
That whole run was heart in mouth to watch on the day, but oh so cool 😎
The McMurty was so fast, it almost was a bullet, instead of a car!
@@Alue14 actually crazy how quick that thing can corner
the 3S-GTE in the celica makes the best turbo noises. That man is the KING of Pikes Peak.
The Solus GT sounded like West McLaren MP4/14! Amazing sound and it moves fast!
That Celica Pikes Peak turbo makes it sound like a Basketball game broke out during the middle of a time trial. 😂
The speed of the Speirling is both unbelievable to watch and making first time hill run fanatics speechless.
Love those Jags! Iconic
I feel like 47.3 in the wet is flying…big up
2004 Justin law clipping the inside Wall destroying the Cars side and still doing fastest lap is 🔥🔥🔥😍
The music why the music we want to hear this engines roaring
weird to see the early years of Goodwood festival of speed weren’t as packed as they are now… what a vibe the 90’s seemed to be
The Gould was pretty quick for a low-budget hillclimb specific car
8:07 I hope we will see one of the current British Hillclimb cars get invited to Goodwood in the future so we can really see what they can do.
Speirling is the quickest vehicle ON EARTH over one twisty lap. That's including all the race cars
Heidfeld tried two times in wet with slick tires, then, when finally got dry, he had grooved ones... 😂
Never forget an updated McMurtry coming last year, being over a second up on the record and then they took away the timing bc it wasn’t an official run
So many Jaaags You ❤ to see it!
They just love that XJR Group C tree ....
Watch 20+ minutes of some of the most amazing racing cars humans have ever produced, and then at the very end, along comes this McMurtry Spéirling that changes EVERYTHING. And that's only the first salvo...
interesting to see that until 2001, the fastest runs were only F1 cars
Contemporary F1 cars were banned around that time from doing out and out speed runs
@@DPW864 WIMPS!
Today's F1 would likely not better the modern specialist British Speed Hill climb cars like the Gould 59s or Alex Summers DJ Firestorm. I believe like F1 they are also excluded from timed runs at Goodwood
love the ferrari can am
Mr. Justin Law is a mad man!
18:39 That’ really impressive for a WRX that (if you close your eye on that big wing) looks fairly narrow. Almost GT4 spec like…
Was that Crofty on commentary in 2010? 😃
i hope to see the GOBSTOPPER III this year
That Volkswagen IDR is a wing with a car attached to it
Miss Neville Hay in the commentary box..the new generation really don't cut it.
The McLaren MP4/13 did a 41.6 on grooved tyres. Wonder what it would have done on proper slicks. Would be close with the McMurty.
If Nick did a 41,6 in 1999 what could be done with a well setup 2024 F1?! Or one of the last V10 F1:s. That would be interesting to see.
I swear they press fast forward for the McMurtry runs
I press fast forward whenever it comes on my screen. Snore fest
@@CrazyPanda688 OMG youre so cool! Is that the reaction you wanted? It is a great piece of engineering. Does not matter what a 12 year old on youtube thinks
@@Boeing-ER-jy9vq you’re a plane enthusiast. Opinion rejected. Wanna know something that’s not a great piece of engineering? Boeing airplanes😂
@@CrazyPanda688 Says the person with a default google generated profile. This your alt account/ rage bait account? getting a job might help you
@@CrazyPanda688 wow, what a typical old man commenting “hurr durr EVs bad”
Also the Boeing 747 is the greatest passenger plane ever built. If you’ve ever travelled overseas, you’ve been a passenger in it.
The McLaren Mp4/12 🫠🫠🫠
7:46 that pikes peak celica is fast!
I'm guessing they banned modern F1 cars for just blitzing everything else up that hill, but then came the McMurtry...
Johnny Palmer was brave damn
I want a better clip of hte 2000 run in the Tyrrel P34, that thing was sliding mad!
It looked so much better in the 90’s without the crazy amount of bales they use today
Over this short run, the electric vehicles have a big advantage.
There needs to be a class structure in place, particularly for electric vehicles.
What's the cut off age for F1 cars doing timed runs? I'm sure Oscar or Lando could come close to 41.6 if the MP4/13 was allowed to run again. What about a 2004 f1 car, maybe the Williams? Ferrari F2004?
Rod Millen in the Tacoma should be in there !
2001😱👍
Everything was better 30yrs ago!
Quick question : why is there a double spoiler on the mp4/9 ? I saw one a while ago but what was the point of installing it ?
More downforce i think
According to the F1 regs those rear wings were permitted and run on high down force circuits. Banned in '95.
@@DPW864 Ah it make sens now, thanks 🙏🏻
@@typeOwagner I think the F1 of this era had plenty of downforce no ?
@@michellambertdublablacar8356 they had indeed plenty of downforce but on the Goodwood circuit with a max speed of about 250km/h one can put more wing for more Downforce if the regulations permit. Especially if it is wet. the more the better the traction, cornering and braking off course.
Now prep that 1999 F1 with some slicks and make sure the pavement is nice and clean..
GT500車両もアタックしてたんですね!
2025 or 2026: Red Bull RB17?
Where there major changes to the track over the year?
On every run, Heidfeld could not keep that McLaren in a straight line with all his micro corrections.
Seeing & hearing these old F1 cars, just shows how much F1 has gone backwards with the excitement.
And lets not mention the Group C era cars against the current Hypercars. Just no contest.
McMurtry was McFlyin'!
it bums me out a little bit that if it so much as shows up at the festival this year everyone is already going to know who the winner is haha.
@@toodlepop in fairness, it did show up in 2023 - it just had more of an exhibition run, hence why the Solus GT won
But remember, most of those other FTD cars have to conform to a set of rules. The McMurtry does not. The Jags in particular are designed to run 24 hour endurance races.
Surely resurfacing that road knocked off about twenty seconds off people's times?
Why doesn’t this video have all the result times displayed? A shame.
Say whatever. 1999 was spetacular. Near out of limit!!!
I'm certain Rod Millen done a low 45 second pass that celica and even quicker in his tacoma
Yes, i made that point below, circa 45 secs in the Tacoma, missing off this compilation
How come they could get the sound and video to marry up 25+ years ago, but they seem to be incapable of doing it now? 😂
And now a van's won it with a 43.99 lol
Will we see a repeat of the 2023 race fixing scandal this year? Everyone saw the McMurtry going about 5 seconds faster the McLaren Solus GT, but Goodwood turned the timing clock off just before it finished because they had already decided the Solus was going to be 'fastest'.
The McMurtry did not compete in the Shootout last year, it's just a (very rapid) demo run. It wasn't entered for the Shootout. They probably just timed it to give another glimpse of its potential.
They didn't let the Mcmurty officially enter last year because there would have been no contest as everyone knew it was unbeatable. Probably won't let it compete again until something goes up there at a comparable speed.
No McLaren F1 GTR?!!
Why was Brundle so slow?
