@@rosslytle5700 when Jon Stewart first became popular, he had a strong stance against the bush administration, the war on terror, and the patriot act. He argued that the patriot act violated individual liberty. He argued against the idea that we must sacrifice some freedoms in order to protect others, rightly pointing out that every freedom you sacrifice is never returned to you and you will always be asked to sacrifice more.
Now he comes out and makes the same tyrannical authoritarian neocon argument that the Bush administration did, claiming that individual liberty requires collective action and some liberties must be sacrificed in order to protect others.
That's not true by the way. Individual liberty does not require collective action, it requires collective tolerance. It requires people NOT to use force, threats, and discrimination against others in order to force them into compliance and submission.
I guess Jon was always a bit of a propagandist. He creates a strawman to mock by finding the most ridiculous examples, laughing at how absurd they are, and then makes a calm argument to sound reasonable by comparison. That is standard propagandist tactics.
Jon has been gone a long time, and personally I'm tired of seeing blatant propagandist tactics everywhere, especially from someone who i used to think was an honest person.

    • @rosslytle5700

@@gnostic-wolf This looks like apples and oranges to me. I see where you're pointing, but I don't see the ideological inconsistency there.
I can see how the contents of your blood/health/immune system are similarly intimate and important to literal privacy and the idea of having legal rights to not be recorded and observed every literal moment of your existence and for there to be some boundaries around that. I mean after all, your blood/health is *inside* your body. You can't really get more personal than that.
The reason the Bush administration was making the arguments was over the fear that Saddam Hussein's Iraq had WMDs. The source of that information was maybe supported by real military intelligence? Or did that whole talking point just come from politicians that belonged more to the oil lobby than to their constituencies? Either way, it was false. That specific threat was imagined. Or maybe even fabricated. Stewart got it right.
In this scenario, the government has conflicting duties to protect/respect freedoms/rights and to protect public health and safely continue all the other stuff that government is infrastructure for.
The news about the threat is coming mostly from science people, right? And then the politicians are reacting to it and spinning narratives around it? At least that's what it looks like from what I can see. Is the threat real?
It's killed 5 million people across the world so far. There were people who thought 9-11 wasn't real. Info Wars, Alex Jones kinda people. 3,000 people died in that. Civilian deaths resulting from US military intervention in Iraq and Afganistan is in the 200,000 range. I don't bring these up to minimize the severity of any of it. Every 1 in those numbers is a human life.
This virus has killed 5,000,000 people. 250,000,000 people have been infected with it. The kind of people saying it's not real are Alex Jones and his friends again. They aren't good authorities on what is or isn't real. They are very ideologically consistent, though.
I think Stewart probably has this one right, too.
I feel ya on that feeling over-saturated with propaganda/advertising though. Society's got a real Mr. Poopy Butthole situation on our hands. He's real, though. He's your friend. Make sure you don't shoot him! Ooooooeeeeee! (this part of the comment has been a Rick and Morty reference. Just run for president, Jon, you'd beat any candidate in a landslide.
EDIT: Just so I don't have to repeat myself for any naysayers down below, let me just make my case here: Yes I'm aware that the idea of having a comedian, or any celebrity running for president is kind of ridiculous, and yes I know Jon himself would likely scoff at the idea. That being said, however, this country has basically become Idiocracy. People don't vote based on policy anymore, they vote based on political dynasties and cult of personalities. The next guy we get in office is going to be there because of nepotism, fame, or because they speak like a pro wrestler. So if having someone like that in office is going to be inevitable anyway due to the current state of the country, then why not put up someone who fits that bill AND knows what the Hell he's talking about? Not to mention the fact that Jon has proven time and again that he's far more than a comedian all those times he helped renew the funding for the 9/11 first responders.

The problem we have as humans is that we assume individuals can fix institutions. I think we have seen over and over again that this is not the case. We could take any particular shining star in politics over the last few decades and they have all failed.
The progressive caucus has become performative and basically hasn't passed anything or managed to block any number of horrible things that have come through Congress.
Bernie ran in 2016 and then endorsed someone who claimed a war criminal as a role model. Then he ran again and caved to throw his support behind a cynical moderate. He's done more legislatively than the progressive caucus but hasn't fixed our major institutional problems either.
We need a groundswell. We need a collective effort. We need to stop putting our faith in individuals to save us and work together to do it ourselves. Together.
If we can't do that, then we're doomed.

@@besticudcumupwith202 it’s to do with what he said because he said he was the opposite end of the political spectrum to Stewart. That means right wing, (even though Stewart is in the middle ground, but this guy probably thinks Stewart is left wing), and right wing is scrooge type capitalists. I made the comment because most people who say they’re right wing actually aren’t. Chances are they are also somewhere in the middle ground of social democracy. 70-90% of a population will always be the middle ground of social democracy or to the left of it. The literal point of the propaganda system is to con enough of those people into voting for and enabling right wing economics.
Views on the vaccine have no relation to the political spectrum. Literally nothing to do with what left, right and the middle are, apart from what can be extrapolated from the economics of those things. Indeed I can say the vast majority of the actual right wing would be pro vaccine, given it gets their profits flowing again.
And yes, the vaccine does work. No vaccine is 100%. It just needs to be 50% effective. The flu vaccine is around 50-60% or so, not the 100% you claim. These vaccines are far more effective than that, so far. Just look at the data and read some freaking scientific studies.
