I left teaching after 9 years due to being called a "marxist" and "communist" because I taught Fredrick Douglas in a history class in MARYLAND!!! if you don't know, Douglas was from.......MARYLAND!!!!! absolutely broke my heart to leave the profession I worked so hard to enter. After serving two combat deployments in the Marines I just don't connect with America anymore. Sad. Now I work in the mental health field.
It's amazing, because I studied to teach Social Studies and finding a History Teaching job became so difficult that I gave up and stuck with a different career path. Now, it appears people want to learn less and less about actual history, when it was rather muddy to begin with. People don't want to learn the reality of our past because some of it makes them uncomfortable. But being ignorant to the facts and truth is the complete opposite of how to fix that. When I hear someone on TV or in a movie say something completely historically inaccurate, even minor, I get really annoyed, but when it's serious and extremely ridiculous I get really angry. I also spent most of my life growing up in Maryland after moving up from upstate New York and remember learning all about Slavery and how it really effect our national and state's history. Thanks for spending so much time teaching the truth and facts, and serving in the Marine Corps!

The truth is that Trump and his inner circle had many connections to shady rich Russians and pro-russian Ukrainians. It's a fact no matter if the media blew it.
And I say it would occur within a 24 hour period. But at the same time, lies and invented fantasy led to the criminal nonsense in January of last year. We do not need "truth" as much as the nation needs to obtain a minimum basic education. Educated minds can handle truth. It is and always has been intentional ignorance which is the problem.
I had no clue he was doing this again. Thank you so much Jon and others like you for doing what needs to be done and bringing the truth to light for us. Selfish as hell, but I needed this in my life right now. Thank you again.
I think it was Jon himself who pointed out how the media landscape changed post-9/11, in that every news story became a critical, breaking news headline. The drama of presenting events, particularly events involving war, natural disasters, mechanical mishaps, and political intrigue have distorted our ability to differentiate between what's important, what's not, and what's being underserved. Once the corporate boards of major news networks saw the spike in viewership after the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, they knew that their round-the-clock coverage would be able to keep them on the ratings charts, all while crowing about how critical their coverage is to the public. I'm of the mind that 24/7 news in the age of digital transmission has made for a reactionary news base. I'm of the age that remembers "the evening news" when a familiar anchor would come out and read the day's events in a tone that could put Mr. Rogers to sleep. No embellishment, just the stated facts, and if it was really important, you'd maybe follow up with morning radio or the newspaper the next day, or wait for any updates coming the next evening. But now it's instantaneous. Now you have to be the first to report so that you don't lose viewers or appear to be falling behind. And every story is carried with equal measure and weight, every headline displayed in the same font, all given in the same delivery. It could be a hurricane landing on the Atlantic coast, or a plane that went down over Iowa, or a statue being removed from it's plinth, or an organized protest taking place in Brazil - all these stories are brought to the public as being critical to note. Look at what's happening now with the war in Ukraine - hardly anything domestic gets spoken about with the same intensity or prevalency. It IS important, but this hourly update routine is exhausting, because they're turning a travesty of geopolitical warfare into a spectator sport. In the same way that I listen to sports analysts going over the details of trade rumors, or game predictions, or player injuries, news anchors and the pundits they hire to come give "expert insight" are essentially doing the same thing - trying to second guess what's about to happen, or even more egregiously, declaring a victory before one has yet to surface. It's not the way people need to get informed. It's watered down entertainment for political junkies and partisans.
I agree, let’s further this conversation. When the news merged into entertainment. News shouldn’t be confused with entertainment media. 24 hrs news cycle are overwhelming and desensitize the viewer to the urgency of the topic being spoken about.
Actually, that happened with the advent of CNN, not 911. That was going on LONG before. The fact is that the news was ALWAYS biased and was never 'news', it was what three or four corporations wanted you to think. That hasn't changed. Just now in 'the economist' their headline is how 'humanitys fate is hanging on ukraine'. Thats odd that they didn't think that when Iraqis or Afghans were dying. Compare the news from Ukraine with how Iraq was reported. Hell, in Iraq they wouldn't even show soldiers coffins returning from Iraq. THAT hasn't changed from, well, EVER. Analysis of reporting from the seventies on Vietnam and Indonesia, where the US was providing arms showed just how biased the media is. And it shouldn't be a suprise, news from an empire will of course favour the empire. Romans didn't hear news critical of the Roman empire but about all the horrible things the savages did. THat of course should not be taken as any kind of comment that lets Russia off the hook for the invasion, I think the attention it gets is how it SHOULD be handled. But Iraq and Afghanistan and places where the US illegally invaded should be discussed in much the same way. To be fair, like Russia, at the time there were the largest protests ever recorded AGAINST the war. It didn't stop the war, but when governments are clearly going against the wishes of their own people should be something the media focuses on, but of course isn't going to.
Man you hit the nail on the head. On the flipside I'm 30. I grew up in the wake of 9/11 so this is all I've ever really known. I'm so appreciative of Jon Stewart for telling me that this isn't normal or healthy as I was growing up. And I think with my age group just generally speaking avoid CNN, Fox, etc. That's not inherently a good thing either, as getting your info from random posters on Twitter or 4chan isn't exactly better. It's just so frustrating and I've such a hatred for the media corporations. They created this nightmare environment where I feel like I've to take everything with boulders of salt in relentless pursuit of profit. And with photoshop technology and now deep fakes becoming more advanced and cheaper by the second, I already know I can't trust my own eyes unless I'm seeing something firsthand. I am 100% grateful for Jon Stewart. I remember when journalists reported the news rather than speculating on what the news might be. It feels like maybe 10% of the news is actually reporting, the rest is just ridiculous speculation.
They don't have many reporters left to do actual investigations themselves. They pull off the wire the work of other people and the stories hand fed to them by their "news source" (governmentaly sterilized rendition of the events) Then they chop it up and mold it to their narrative. They can then sensationalize it and manipulate the viewers into the fear driven ratings system that gets them corporate profits. All the while creating a massive divide in the country that will one day lead to conflicts between neighbors, if not an all out civil war of ideology. Welcome to the Rush Limbaugh model of modern journalism. (I give him credit since he is the one I remember from my earliest inquiries into politics back in the 90's. Maybe he didn't start it but to me he is the culprit in this model. There were other right wing radio talk show hosts doing this, but he was by far the most popular at the time)
Nowadays they speculate and sensationalise to chase ratings. On both sides, they also appeal to bias, so they are not really journalists anymore. There are a few good investigative journalists out there but they write books and intellectual columns based on evidence. Most people don’t read anything of value any more.

@@AUG_XZABER John Oliver's delivery is rancid, though. Even if he may have interesting things to talk about, whenever he tries to make things funny, he acts like a completely pompous, over-the-top clown. And John Oliver *definitely* comes off as trying *far* too hard.
I like when the news starts a story then they say they have an expert. They show the expert, who coincidentally just wrote a book about this. They plug the book and are asked a simple question that goes on for too long. Then then the shot pulls out and there is a panel of like 10 people talking over each other for the next 5 minutes.
At the end, one is left trying to figure out the answers, the way I see it, the coming generations are gonna want short vids like on Tiktok, I make fun of my daughter because she'll spend hours watching 30 sec vids, I wouldn't be surprised if news media moves to Tiktok and the such if they haven't already.

I once saw a channel that just showed random events all day. Sadly forgot what it was called. Just footage of bridges collapsing, strikes, demonstrations, war footage. There is more than enough stuff happening in the world for a 24h news cycle. But modern media always wants a 'narrative'. If their anchors cannot get some kind of 'story' from an event - no mater how big it may be - then you're most likely not going to see it. Just compare the Ukrainian war coverage with the Yemen war coverage. the first can be beautifully spun as a story of heroes. My local paper as it's own segment "What happened this night in the war' EVERY SINGLE morning. I think I have not read more than 10 articles about Yemen in the last 5 years.

Imagine if the news media actually took it upon themselves to report on issues in depth and actually discuss the nuances and complexity that controversies can have. Then again, the public doesn’t want to pay or watch that sort of thing, so I guess we are screwed
For better or for worse, a _lot_ of people are slowly moving away from watching TV-style news towards other sources. It's definitely a mixed bag because while some people will spend more time actually looking into the data on a given issues and put more time and thought into their positions, it's very easy for people who don't know any better to get swept up into the alt-right very quickly, and once you're in it can be very difficult to escape.

One of the problems is that there is never enough real "news" to fill 24 hours. There isn't enough local news to even fill 30 minutes, usually. This is even true with internet - shows (whether its TH-cam or TikTok or Facebook or whatever) have to fill time with something. But that doesn't mean a person has to watch all that crap. It really is up to the viewer to be discerning and not fill their minds with trash, just like you shouldn't load up at Burger King every day for every meal, or even eat steak or expensive desserts for every single meal.
There definitely is, that’s why you can have international/weather/sports sections. To fill in the gaps with information that may be seemingly unnecessary to disseminate on a grand scale, but a few members of the audience will appreciate.
I'm so glad Jon Stewart is giving this issue a platform. Most people will call you a conspiracy theorist talking about stuff like this, but now this might actually go mainstream
Just like MSM, it depends on how you present it. If you present it like Mike Pillow, then you'll be dismissed as a loon, but if it is objective without filling it up with noise, then you sound a bit more credible. Qanon had a bad reputation when everything they said was strictly partisan and niche to Democratic Hollywood Elites, but after finding out and defending Trump's image with Epstein, they sort of dissolved. The amount of energy they put in to uncovering Democrats, if that was applied universally and cogently, then a lot more people would've taken it seriously and not dismiss it like they do with MTG space lasers or existence. A person who is worse than MTG is Tulsi Gabbard who is smart and was liked by independents, Democrats, and Republicans. How she carries and tones things makes people listen; even if it is dangerous or misleading.
Everything that was true since Trump decided to run according to msm has been false and everything that was considered conspiracy has been truth. Biden is in the White House because real journalism was banned before the election…..see Hunter Biden’s laptop. Didn't help you much during the Obama years, in which Obama went on to bomb Pakistan, Libya, Syria, Somalia, and Yemen. Obama was as much of a liar as George W. Bush was, and Bush was a tremendous liar. If you think the US bombed Syria because "Assad is gassing his own people" or that he bombed Libya "to prevent a humanitarian crisis" - it's because people like Jon Stewart are really partisan hacks, and they will only tell you the truth when the Republican leadership is lying, not when the Democratic leadership is lying.
It’s comforting when you know you’re not being deceived like the mainstream media always is attempting to do. It’s comforting because Jon is someone we can trust. Unlike the talking heads on MSM!
@@anderseckstrand7033 You think you can trust Jon Stewart? Obama started bombing 5 new nations, and lied to start two wars. Do you know what the lies were? Can you name those 5 nations? I respected Stewart when he CORRECTLY called out the Bush administration for lying us into the Iraq War. Stewart didn't bother to do that with Obama when his administration lied us into the Syrian and Libyan war. He didn't say anything when our propaganda said "Ukraine had a revolution" - they didn't, it was a CIA coup. We know this with ABSOLUTE certainty because Victoria Nuland was recorded choosing the next "leader" of Ukraine - 3 weeks before the "Maidan revolution". Stewart is just a partisan hack. All his fake sincerity about having open discussion and talking truth to power is a facade. He's a nothing more than a shill for the democratic party no matter what crime they do. He'll criticize the republicans when they commit crimes (and he should), but never the democrats, ever. This man isn't respectable. He's a sellout just like Colbert is.

I've always watched a variety of outlets for news knowing that no one place has it all. However, after watching Viva Frei's Live Stream during the Canadian Trucker Rally I will NEVER watch again. What was reported LIVE and what was reported on the NEWS were not the same. This only made the Spin more obvious. Jon Stewart is a shining STAR of wisdom and honesty. So glad you are back!
That's not true. Was the mainstream news lying when they reported that pat king was an organizer and racist who thought white people had the strongest bloodline? Viva only gave on the ground video. He never dug deep into the organizers and people putting the event together.
Jeff Daniel's character in "The Newsroom" put it perfectly when he said that, when the CRTC mandated that all networks must provide one hour of news per day, they should have said it has to be commercial free.
Thank you for being a great voice of reason amongst the cluster f*** of news reporting in circulation nowadays. You and Russell Brand are tremendously appreciated.
Russel Brand is a guy who wants to be the one to unravel the conspiracy but is just pointing out obvious shit like "maybe the military industrial complex controls shit"
Brand is and always has been an attention seeking moron with little to no wit at all. He, like many others right now, just realized TH-cam is where it's at. I was interested when I learned about the stuff he talks on his channel, so I listened into one of his bits, sounded reasonable for a minute or so, so I turned it off and thought nothing of it. Much later I was bored out of my mind and somehow stumbled across one of his other bits. Listening in more than just a few minutes almost made me feel sick. The guy uses the arsenal of people like Stewart, Chappelle and so on, but only to present himself. Nothing he speaks of he provides depth or his own opinion for, because he has none of that. Done no research, has no opinion. The reaction he shows to the things he presents are a dead giveaway, it's Tucker Carlson-level disingenous. No disrespect for that, many more people rely on this sort of clownery to make ends meet these days (and you and at least 80 other people enjoy that sort of thing, so there's a market), but styling himself like a prophet for truth is mildly off-putting, to say the least.
I'll always remember "Summer of the Shark" where you couldn't turn on the news without hearing about shark attacks. It started with one dramatic incident that captured people's attention, but then the media glommed onto it. They reported every time someone just saw a shark, and over-hyped everything. Really played into people's fears and made it seem like shark attacks were on the rise, when in reality there were fewer shark attacks that year than average. Stuff like that is why I didn't take COVID seriously at first, until I actually read what doctors were saying. Over-hyped banalities from the news media is so dangerous, but at the same time I feel like it's so difficult to discuss it with nuance because you'll always get the damned conspiracy theorists and the far right folk saying, "see we told you libtard new media lies". Sigh.
Jon... you are like the only newscaster that I'll take the time out of my day to listen to. We need you dude. I'll go gonzo and start kicking people's ass but you sir... are doing a great job.
Good one. When watching the news, watch out for the words "could, should, might". When you hear those words, you are no longer watching news. You are being lead down a rabbit hole.
As much as I feel we alllllll could have used a little bit of John Stewart during the entire five years of the Trump era, I'm beyond thrilled that he's made a return to our lives. Not gonna lie, I was kinda hurt that he left us all to our own devices there for a while. But he's BACK! And that's what really matters!
Thank you Jon for my biggest laugh of the month. With Bill Barr's ingenious rewriting of the Mueller Report for the mainstream media now revealed, with daily recurrences of anchors and commentators reaching for the Thesaurus to cover a routine arraignment, this is funnier than ever.
The real Daily Show's still called the Daily Show. Then again, you included a far right con artist like Jordon Peterson on your channel playlist, so I shouldn't be surprised....
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Wow. You enjoy being a dingus? Agree with Jordan Peterson, or disagree with him... He's smarter than me. And 💯 smarter than you. Thanks for your opinion though.
Jon has inspired a new term which I will use as long as I live: “newsplooge”, the messy, unbecoming and arguably dissatisfying result of an overwrought, histrionic media on any given issue.
Read Reuters...nothing else compares. There isn't zero bias. That's an impossibility. But it's as good as it gets. Most news organizations get their stories from Reuters facts, and build a Dan Brown novel out of it.
Jon you really found your calling. Your leadership gives us a path to the facts and calling out the fake news. Don’t let (want a be journalist for ratings) get away with this stupidity we witness on all media.
I love you John Stewart!!! You and John Oliver are the best people in the world along at getting deep into a serious story, creating a narrative, and continuing to provide comedy with it. Thank you
Mueller's investigation was a big nothing burger that Bob himself knew would fail from the start, but he strung it out for the full term of Trump's Presidency to allow the media to cast a negative light on Trump through leaked lies. In the end, the media was left to throw a tantrum for how unfair it is for Trump wanting "to protect his Presidency". So the media is now upset Trump didn't roll over and accept all the lies they made up for years. This is a true narrative, and anyone will be furious if personally subjected to this kind of treatment for years.
Welcome back Jon! Great to see you, hilarious you highlighted the ridiculousness of our media, but also pointed out their 4am talking points being so consistent 😂
Part of the problem is the abundance of 24/7 "news" channels that are in constant need for new information and content all the freaking time. When was the last time something wasn't "breaking news?" Each agency has their own demographic, which they need to reinforce their audience (thought bubble) - which is why Fox is right-wing and the others lean left (or far-left). You know what might be neat - a source of unbiased, un-editorialized news - it would last perhaps 30 minutes each day (reporting just the facts doesn't take that long) - then we could opt-in to editorialized content if we desire or have absolutely nothing better to do. Watching a lot of those clips when they got to the "if true" part - I noticed many of them had an undeniable smile and excitement that Trump could be going to jail - if true.
I'm a journalist full-time. You're 99% right, but I'd be very hesitant to say there's any far-left cable news network in the U.S. Even MSNBC was largely skeptical of Bernie Sanders, with Chris Matthews comparing his primary victories to the Nazis conquering France and going on a rant about how "if the reds had won the cold war I would have been executed in Time Square" when people criticized him for it. There is no mainstream news network in the United States with a communist or even socialist orientation. Unfortunately our political spectrum is completely imbalanced and that's why you see Fox News expounding openly white supremacist rhetoric whereas even our "far left" networks are spooked by a social democrat from Vermont.
We got that in germany. Unbiased Media without bullsh*t. Costs tax money, cause - surprise - someone has to pay. Many germans want to abolish that to save the ~30$/Month. "We get our information on social media". *sigh*
"others lean left (or far-left)" What do you mean lol. There isn't any large scale Left media in the US. Being "pro-Democrat" isn't automatically left. These channels regularly employ ex-GOP people, and still tend to reflect the views of big business, even if to a slightly lesser (and less insane) extent as Fox News.
@@harmreductionman4474 I think we might have a different idea of where the "center" is. Fox is certainly right to far right, but I don't recall any white supremacists talk - some are pretty pro-Trump, but that's about it. I don't watch much of any of them these days since it is mostly OpEd junk. Just get a few tid bits off TH-cam and carry on with life.
Such an important message to the media which I fear will be ignored by the people that need to absorb it most - I'm so sick and tired of the media beating everything up, it's so draining, disheartening, and numbing - no wonder it's difficult to keep electorates engaged on important issues. Endless cycles of nauseatingly recycled conjecture, "expert" opinion, lies, propaganda, fear, outrage and anticipation-peddling often just built on bs or nothing new or of substance.
Honestly the entire Russia Collusion thing totally broke my brain. I'm serious. Either an absolutely massive scandal occurred in front of our noses, and nobody cared and no consequences befell any who were complicit in the scandal, or the media fear-mongered over nothing, and just made shit up like the Putin penthouse in Trump Tower Moscow. I don't know which scenario haunts me more, but every time I think about it I get angry and sad.
@@Shortbus88 There was definitely some totally made up stuff, but there was also definitely some solid evidence of collusion. It's documented in the reports. Seems to me like there was all this hype about collusion and the end of trump and then there was suddenly all this hype about it ALL being fake. Neither hype was true.
@j wallah I suggest you go do some more research. They already lied to you about the story, don't let them fool you again with the "correction". The Russia collusion story has been found to be 100% verifiable false. That's an undeniable fact. It goes well beyond the Mueller investigation. It was a complete fabrication of the DNC and Clinton campaign, in collaboration with the MSM and members of the intelligence community. The FBI admitted to knowing it was false back in 2016, and allowed investigations to go forward. Steele dossier analysts, along with sources linked to them, have been charged with lying and fabricating the whole thing.

Part of the problem is how to fund journalism without advertising, corporate donation and profit motives. How to fund journalism without sensationalism and confirmation bias to drive paying viewership. How to fund journalism out of government revenues without bias toward the current party on power. You worked in a mental health field before, too, pal.
If fast food doesn’t kill us, media overload just might!
Oh this goes back to fucking OJ and the Clarance Thomas hearings.

This is a backhanded compliment. You're almost calling him a one-trick pony (which he is not).
Wait, so the one bit he does on so called "liberal" (really NEOliberal) corporate news is his best work?
Dude, this is merely a regurgitation of all the stuff he did on TDS - and his peak TDS work was better than this.
His work on Collateralizd Debt Obligations was his AMAZING. It was so good, my economics professor used it to explain CDOs and Credit Default Swaps in college.
This is just recycling his old "corporate media cares about profits not truth" thesis on TDS (and he's 100% correct). It's great, dont get me wrong, but this isn't really a compliment the way you meant it.
He's done far better material than this imo, both since his return and TDS. This was a repetition of so many of his stellar media critiques on TDS with more current material.

I remember when journalists reported the news rather than speculating on what the news might be. It feels like maybe 10% of the news is actually reporting, the rest is just ridiculous speculation.
The press has always pushed narratives dating back to the papers printed in the original 13 colonies.
No. It's 5% news, and 95% talking heads telling you how you should feel about the news.

That's not true. Was the mainstream news lying when they reported that pat king was an organizer and racist who thought white people had the strongest bloodline?
Viva only gave on the ground video. He never dug deep into the organizers and people putting the event together.
Preserve this man at all costs.
I love Jon Stewart so much. This is amazing to see him back at what he does best. He is the hero we need right now.
John Stewart is the best of We The People.
Jeff Daniel's character in "The Newsroom" put it perfectly when he said that, when the CRTC mandated that all networks must provide one hour of news per day, they should have said it has to be commercial free.
I didn't realize I missed Jon Stewart, but we all need him. Thank you for coming back sir
Sigh.
So don't lie. Report the facts.
Damn i missed Jon Stewart... Its so good to see his political comedic commentary... Been years... Thank you.
Nobody can do it the way Jon Stewart does. Obsessed with him.
you are making his wife get red ears
Jon... you are like the only newscaster that I'll take the time out of my day to listen to. We need you dude. I'll go gonzo and start kicking people's ass but you sir... are doing a great job.
Jon is a legend, miss him on the daily show❤
Jon Stewart is a great truth teller and hilarious. Keep the truth alive for humanity and the planet and all life. 👍 👍 💖
I don't agree with his take on CRT, at least so far.
Funny but full of it.
So happy hes back. Didnt realise how much i missed the real Daily Show.
they neutered the daily show by putting trevor noah on it. the sabotage was by design.
@@emhu2594 some argued the same when jon replaced craig kilborn. Adapting to change isn’t easy for everyone
@@cavemanlawyer5608 Trevor Noah is nothing like this. He's a culture leftist not an economic leftist.
Do what you do, Jon. Thank you. Sometimes it's hard to laugh at all the crazy bs. Feels good.
Thank you
Lmao they’re deff best at creating a narrative
Was Trump gettomg a bjob behind the podium?
Mueller's investigation was a big nothing burger that Bob himself knew would fail from the start, but he strung it out for the full term of Trump's Presidency to allow the media to cast a negative light on Trump through leaked lies. In the end, the media was left to throw a tantrum for how unfair it is for Trump wanting "to protect his Presidency". So the media is now upset Trump didn't roll over and accept all the lies they made up for years. This is a true narrative, and anyone will be furious if personally subjected to this kind of treatment for years.
hes married, so....
John Oliver’s show for 2 years was basically we have to arrest Trump for crimes he didn’t commit.
Isn’t that what’s called the daily news bulletin? World News Tonight, CBS Evening News etc
Thanks for this John...the country has never needed it more.
Now imagine applying that thinking to other "bombshells" in the past 6 years. Hunter's laptop? Origin of COVID? January 6? Freedom Convoy?
There is no "either" bro. It was literally made up out of thin air. It was the greatest propaganda hit job ever perpetrated on the American people
@@Shortbus88 There was definitely some totally made up stuff, but there was also definitely some solid evidence of collusion.

I missed you Jon Stewart!!! You help me cope with things the way they are these days. Thank you 🙏
Re-watching this in March '23 and the media is still manically engaged in an "edging party" over the umpteen indictments that are "about to fall."
Jon thank you so much for doing this again. I can tell it takes its toll on you. Just look at that face.

John, there are no words to express our gratitude for speaking the truth.
Part of the problem is how to fund journalism without advertising, corporate donation and profit motives.
How to fund journalism without sensationalism and confirmation bias to drive paying viewership.
How to fund journalism out of government revenues without bias toward the current party on power.
The answer may be the second one, but we need to be education ourselves on the role and value of journalism, what is pure journalism, and be willing to pay $$$ for subscription to it enough to get decent quality without advertising and government aid.
So nearly impossible.
