The way everybody acted in this, a better twist might have been that the earth is populated by androids who think they're human. The mass suicides are a series of self-destruct signals being triggered by accident.
This was one of my favorite performances he's done in my opinion. When i was a kid, me and a couple friends would sometimes act like that to freak people out (mainly new teachers). This was before wikipedia so it took some work to memorize a bunch of random crap about a single subject like that. Managed to get some A's by acting like that during some presentations at school.
This movie had so much potential honestly... even the idea on paper, if done correctly, sounds like a chilling yet effective piece of storytelling. They could've gone in so many directions with this one, yet Shyamalan decides to take the worst way.
5:25 Central park? This is kinda of odd. "yeah, terrorists rarely goes after landmarks with lots of people" sorry, but point for Shyamallan... If i remember well, in the scene it was stablished that was some kind of chemical attack. You wouldn`t choose an open air, high ventilated place for this kinda of attack, you would choose the subway or a building.
Yeah, plus Central Park isn't a population dense area compared to, say, a skyscraper - a bomb in the lobby of a busy hotel would be a more tempting terrorist target. I do agree that this is something Shyamallan, intentionally or not, got right.
I think that was Rob Walker doing the Burns (I think that’s how you spell it, I don’t watch the Simpsons) impression. Either that or Malcolm. But that’s how good of an impression it was: you can’t tell who it actually is.
At least anything he made before Signs was actually good, but now I'm starting to wonder if, given how he writes people, he even has any daily interactions with actual humans.
Here's what Shyamalon doesn't seem to understand about creating a "quriky" character; You see, Mable is quirky, Ruby Rose is quirky. Star Butterfly is freaking quirky. But they also have other important personality traits besides there quirks. Characters like Mark Wahlberg and the hot dog guy in this movie are just awkward, bland, weirdos.
Indeed, a good quirky character, I find, is usually invested in something too, and has some deeper character moments. Take Mabel, she's quirky yes, but has family bonds she's really invested in, and that makes them more human. Same can be said for a lot of the adventure time characters, while they are often wacky, they have real emotional grounding and deeper moments that make them into fully fledged characters. We care about them because they care. At least I find I can't care about a character that doesn't care about anything.
+Dakota Nelson Mabel, Star, and Ruby! Some of my favorite female characters ever. There is also Rarity, Nora Valkyrie, Usagi Tsukino (classic anime in Japanese original/Viz redub only. The DiC one is shit, and so is the Crystal version)
+Dakota Nelson I'm not trying to defend this movie or anything but are you comparing live action movie male characters to cartoon female characters? I'm sure there are similarities in the genre but am I the only one who finds it strange to be using those characters as examples of how to do quirky characters for ALL genres, regardless of gender? I'm probably think about this the wrong way but something about the comparisons you're using just bothers me for some reason...
+AudinEcho How about then, Adams Sandler in Punch Drunk Love or perhaps Napoleon Dynamite. Those are live action films with males as leading roles who are quirky. In my opinion the formula still applies. TV shows (especially cartoons) tend to do quirky characters better because they have more time so there are more examples to pick from.
+Djinsin Let me rewrite your comment to make it sound racist..."Malcolm steals every scene where he is in!"...Get it?...because he is black!...I'm racist? What?! Noou...
That accounts for the acting but not the bonkers stories. Plus here in the UK, I went to see The Happening in its second week in cinemas. It had a full house. Admittedly we just didn't know how stupid it was going to be. It took my second viewing for everything to sink in.
While I can assure you that Europe doesn't love Shymalan, you are indeed correct, at least about the Prequels. Hayden Christensen is always horrible, but least we only have look at him and not listen to him too.
I think the reason for why Shyamalan's movies are more appreciated in Europe depends from the fact that they are almost everywhere dubbed. The Happening, dubbed in Italian, was a bit better than in original language...
I have a feeling that every single person that worked to make "The Happening"-including Shyamalan himself-had already realized it would be sh!t, so they put as minimal effort forward as humanly possible.

The new 60FPS Nostalgia Critic cam is neat. Also, jokes are absolutely on point. My favorite part is the orange obsession - I mean, where else are you going to hear "There are 600 varieties of orange" as a prelude to collapse? This is probably my favorite NC episode in awhile.

Malcolm sticking the orange in his mouth and the absolutely committed and smooth way he does it for some reason stands as one of the most hilarious moments I've ever seen in an NC video.

And people say Walhberg acting is bad in the Bayformers movies BULLSHIT ! They need to see this piece of shit first before they judge about his performance in those movies.

I actually agree with everything he says in his review. The movie is beautifully paced, and its idea of how such an event would go is strangely realistic. That being said, everything else is awesome in a funny way.
I bursted out laughing every time Malcolm was on screen. He was particularly hilarious this episode (not to say he's not hilarious other episodes, but he takes the cake this time... or rather the oranges)
The way everybody acted in this, a better twist might have been that the earth is populated by androids who think they're human. The mass suicides are a series of self-destruct signals being triggered by accident.
THAT WOULD BE AN AWESOME TWIST!
Fuck, I would buy that movie
THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AMAZING
It also would explain the incredibly terrible acting.

It is a freakily accurate Mr Burns voice.

This movie had so much potential honestly... even the idea on paper, if done correctly, sounds like a chilling yet effective piece of storytelling. They could've gone in so many directions with this one, yet Shyamalan decides to take the worst way.
Dawson Brannan I think it would've worked better as a book
Yeah. Like make the main character start to go insane. I mean, why would he talk to a plant?
Dawson Brannan IT really did if only someone else who was a great director made it
With a little tweaking and better direction, any idea can be a good one...with some exceptions. (Freddy Got Fingered, Nutcracker 3D, etc.)
Exactly..the idea of it is still pretty good and very interesting if done properly
5:25 Central park? This is kinda of odd.

I feel that you and Shyamalan have a deep and profound connection and bond.
Roger Ebert gave this film 3/4.
I actually agree with everything he says in his review. The movie is beautifully paced, and its idea of how such an event would go is strangely realistic. That being said, everything else is awesome in a funny way.
Yeah, he wasn't the best critic. Just the most iconic and well-known.
I bursted out laughing every time Malcolm was on screen. He was particularly hilarious this episode (not to say he's not hilarious other episodes, but he takes the cake this time... or rather the oranges)
Tamara: as you know
Me: if I already know why are you explaining it to me
8:29 that Avatar reference xDDD Those poor cabbages indeed!
Shyamalan ruins the Avatar too.
What? No.
How is it that the two parts of the review of The Happening haven't been rereleased as one full video yet?
It's funny when he puts the orange in his mouth. !
