- Down or Synthetic? Now that is a very popular and common question when it comes to choosing a jacket or a vest. While it is probably best to have both. A good down jacket or a nice synthetic jacket in your arsenal. There are definitely ideal conditions and situations for using each.
In this episode. We are not only going to look at the pros and cons of each. But also choosing the best form of insulation that would work best for you.
As a frugal person, synthetic is the way to go. Decathlon’s is great!
Sleeping bags as well as my cheaper single walled tent gets condensation and wets my foot-end in the mornings.
Thank you Pedroclaro for sharing that.
This was really informative, Thank You from Australia.

Glad you liked it. thank you user-qr7b6fo5k for watching. I really appreciate it.
I have a light down jacket like your red one. It is several years old and in good shape still. Crazy how warm That little thing is, especially with other layers. Take care. Enjoy this long autumn.
Plus I love how light and compressible down is. They really take the weight off your back. When stored in the pack. thank you Mnmikeoutdoors for watching. Much appreciated!
like most I have both, but you cant beat wool
great video with the cold weather approaching
Very true! It is good to have good effective clothing in your arsenal!
👍 Excellent review of these 2 insulators.
I live in South Texas and cold weather generally is accompanied by wet weather. If you can stay dry, you can generally stay warm. So, it is synthetic for me.
Great point! I am really liking that grey synthetic jacket. Got her on sale. Most of what I buy I try to find on sale. We have a store nearby called: "Sierra Trading Post". That buys over stocked gear and sells them for half the cost. Sometimes, you can really score!
@@AdventureswiththeMarine I have used their online store. Yes, very good deals can be had. “On Sale” is also my favorite way to shop. 😂😂😂
Hey, bro it's been a while. I listened to each word there. I found it every interesting and your delivery easy to follow. I've just purchased a synthetic jacket - yeah them down jackets cost. Well, good going. All the best. Mark
Wow! It is good to hear from you. I hope all is well. You have to take out a loan to buy those down jackets now-a -days. thank you Mark so much for watching.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine Yeah, good to be back. For sure over there $500 - here about £200 and more. A pleasure bro.
Great video. I like the synthetic for day to day use and when out in wet weather. I don't use my down puffy as much these days because I don't want to oil it up and have to wash it. 😆 Where I'm at it doesn't get too cold so a fleece is good enough most of the time.
I hear you. I am always carful with my down. Thank you Rodoutdoors for watching.
Thanks for explaining the DOWN related info.
Really helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you AniketMohite for watching. I really appreciate it.
Good info. Happy turkey day Marine.
My wife has a big old turkey. Sitting in the icebox. Waiting to be gobbled! Have a happy Thanksgiving.
Another well done video and some great research explained. Down booties, pants and a jacket go in my winter backpack every time. Nice looking pack by the way. What brand was it? Thanks for another informative and entertaining video. Take care, Al
That is my old ULA Catalyst. For winter time. Or shorter hikes. That is my go to pack.. Today was 64°. I don't thick I will see that temperatures till April. Thank you Al for watching.
Great explanation! Henry sighting!
That dog ever sits. Always moving! Thank you Jill Marine for watching.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine LOL I corrected my spelling! Henry is a cutie pie!
Great video! Very well done with the research and explanation. I’m partial to synthetic. I’m in a wet environment most of the time so having it still keep you warm while wet is a plus. Also, the synthetic jacket I have (Enlightened Equipment Torid Apex) there are no baffles so no drafts and is a little better in the wind. However, I had no idea that down is more durable than synthetic and synthetic loses its properties faster. Maybe I’ll rethink my choices.
I see your review on the Enlightened Equipment Torid Apex. It helped me decide on getting it. I owe you one!
@@AdventureswiththeMarineI’m glad it helped! 👍
Great video! I wish I would have thought of it first! lol.
Thank you TheNewHuntersGuide for watching. much appreciated!
First likeeee I love u videos
Thank you Josepht so much. I really appreciate it.
Hahaha I laughed seeing you sneeze at 6:34 ;)
That is a serious reaction to down!
I camp in so many different environments down just wouldn't ever work for me.
Compresses ok for me..........One jacket is all I would want to take. Price helps too. Thanks for the video..
Well said! When it comes to price. It is hard to beat a good fleece jacket. Thank you RoadDogSteve for watching. I really appreciate it.
Super video and very informative. Quick question on survival blankets that fold up into small square packets. What are they made of? How are they so warm?
Happy Thanksgiving. Semper fi my brother!
👍 use both
Good choice! Very wise!
Neither, go with wool everything. Wool provides warmth even when wet plus it wicks away moisture better than down or synthetic.
I wish I could find plus size alpaca wool especially underwear! Maybe if I keep hiking I’ll loose enough weight but sure wish they didn’t only cater up to XL
I can't say Bahhhh!!!! to that. Thank you Jhosk for watching. Much appreciated.
And it’s heavy. But I love wool, too.
Saw you had a Columbia jacket there in your mix so I wanted to ask if you've noticed much benefit to the reflective "Omni-heat" stuff they've added to the inside of some jackets. I think UnderArmour is doing something similar with their ColdGear line too. I know reflictix is being used and recommended all over the place for coozies and pads, but are these reflective layers in jackets worth going after? Thanks!
I believe it really gives you a little more warmth. Thank you Roddybrod for watching. Much appreciated!
i am going hiking in the himalays in january. i have to buy a jacket. its going to be a 7 day hike where it may get windy and have fresh snowfall should i get a sythetic jacket? Since i am from india the only two brands which we have is columbia or decat unfortunately.can you suggest me a jacket from either or which i should purchase. ideal temperature is going to be -10 in the night and negatve 5 in the day. thank you
A jacket that I use for the extreme cold temperatures is the Columbia Whirlbird. I featured it in my last video called : "The best Jacket". It is basically a two in one jacket. Which each one can be worn separate. Thank you Emmanuelmascarenhas for watching. I really appreciate it.
A comment for the algorithm.
Thank you RavenBlaze so much. Much appreciated.

Thank you Nealfry for watching. Much appreciated!
To be honest, for me, it comes down to ethical choice. I don't need animals to suffer for my choice to go hiking when there are so many good synthetic options
