      I can keep my edge when I’m overpowered by keeping the kite low, but as soon as I steer it to twelve I find it very hard to keep that edge if I’m overpowered

      So we definitely need a part 2 : perfect jump if overpowered

      @JonathanDamon-jd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      When massively overpowered don't send the kite so fast from down low to 12. Send it a little more gradually, sounds weird but it helps you get that upwind carve and go higher.

      1. Find flat water or a kicker! It's hard to retain an edge if you're going over chop, often times your pop will be messed up by a wave
      2. Spend more sessions on your bigger kites, and get used to holding down a lot of power in strong wind.
      3. Send the kite a bit more slowly so you can focus on timing your pop and going straight up rather than sending the kite too quickly and messing up your timing. In strong winds, 70-80% of a high jump is having the right timing on your pop, the wind will do the rest of the work for you.

    Awesome tips as always Steven. Since seeing this I’ve cut down on my nervous steering and just parked the kite until time to redirect. This has really cleaned up my kite control, giving much smoother/ softer and more predictable landings.”Stick to the plan” is great advice too, normally I would start some nervous steering to try to keep the kite above me if I go surprisingly high- but your advice works even better- it’s much easier to stay in control- I’m getting more comfortable with higher jumps- Thank you

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That’s great to hear John! The steering speed does have an impact on the jump height, but I think that the speed that you enter the trick with and the upwind carve at the right timing have a way bigger effect. It’s hard to say what the perfect speed is as it differs soo much from small to big kites. You’ll just have to feel it out through repetition.

    thanx Steven for another great video. I improved significally my jumps thanx to yr previous video "5 tips ...etc" This is a more detailed one... great job indeed!!!
    A small q if i understand well ....the 45degree angle to the wind... Seems to me when carving to the wind the angle is much less or i carve too much . Is that resulting in much less speed therefore less power to jump?.

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy that the videos are helping!
      Not sure if I understand your question correctly. Do you carve too much or not enough?
      If you carve more than 45 degrees upwind from a crosswind course you'll loose a lot of speed, prefect for a jump transition but not great for a high jump.
      When you carve less than 45 degrees you'll have more speed, but I think you won't reach your optimum height.

      @stevenakkersdijk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Daan, happy you liked it and get some usefull info out of it!
      Steering the kite during rotations is always a tricky one as you need to know where the kite is. Corrections you make usually end up being the wrong one...
      I usually practise a certain type of jump over and over without rotation so I know exactly what the kite is doing.

  • @Oli4potjebier
    @Oli4potjebier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    noice. Do you have any tips on what to do with the bar? I see on the video you have it sheeted out while steering the kite up. With a sheeted in bar you could steer the kite faster to 12 right? So is there room for improvement there? Sheet in -> steer up -> sheet out -> Sheet in? Or is it sheet out -> steer up -> sheet in?

    • @Oli4potjebier
      @Oli4potjebier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know if you keep it sheeted in too long you'll lose your edge. So i'm wondering if there is some sort of middle ground there.

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually keep the bar around the middle to steer the kite up and then balance between pulling down for power but not too much that I loose my edge.
      The amount of bar pull changes with the power that you have in your kite. When you're very powered you can sheet out more and when you're not very powered you can pull it in more.

    Thank you, this is another very good tutorial. One question though: Can you please elaborate on the exact timing when sending the kite up? What speed do you send it up, from where, how about the timing of edge/carve/send? You suggest not to send it fast from low, what is the best way to send it?
    Would love to see and hear your thoughts about this, thanks!

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These questions show why a perfect jump is something you can work on for a really really long time. The timing always changes unfortunately, on the big kites you need to slow it all down and on the small kites you need to speed it up. I wish there was a simple answer for it, but honestly you need to feel it. And that is something that just needs repetition.
      But in general you send your kite from 45 degrees in the following order: steer the kite up, start edging and pop off the water just before it hits 12

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What to do when the kite overflies you while in the air. It happened to me al lot while jumping when crossing the big shore break. • @stevenakkersdijk

      This is most likely because you steer your kite past 12. Try to slow down your steering and make sure it doesn’t pass 12 when popping over a wave (if they’re lower than 1,5m. Higher than that you might have to steer it a bit more.

    TY for the guidance. Clear focus points, good visuals, and feedback on pitfalls. After lots of small jumps yesterday, this video suggested that I was waiting too late to sheet in. I was successful in holding edge, and carving upwind - but losing too much speed. I actually didn't know that I was supposed to time the sheet in and pop before the kite reached 12.
    I have a question for people who are experienced in cold weather kiting. I heard that cold air temp wind is stronger than warm because cold air is denser. How do you know what kite size to choose? Yesterday may have been a tad underpowered because I wasn't sure how strong the 23 MPH wind would feel - so I went with my 9 (day 1 with dry suit, new to winter kiting). I think I would have done better jumping if I was on my 11.

      Hey Aaron.
      Awesome to hear that this video helped you out and gave a better insight to the jump timing.
      There is quite a big difference in cold and warm wind when it comes to the feel and power of the kite. Cold air is heavier and gives you more power because of that. In general you'll just have to get a feel for the wind and see what other people are riding.

    HI Steven! Thanks for this video. I've had some instances of accidental rotation when carving upwind due to a small wave hitting or a drop in the wind (which reduces pull from the kite). I've actually been injured because of a pretty bad landing after rotating which caused accidental backloop. Do you have any tips to prevent this or what to do when this happens?

    • @anotheruniverse5651
      @anotheruniverse5651 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Had the same thing at some point, and started practicing rotations, so that when it accidental happen you don´t freak out and act on muscle memory.

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      These rotations are hard to deal with, sometimes they still happen to me as well when I'm in very powered conditions and skip over a wave.
      I really like the suggestion from @anotheruniverse . If you practise some rotations you will probably feel more comfortable with rotations.
      When you do start rotating, try and focus on your bar movement. If you just keep it down and try to avoid steering input the kite should stay somewhere above you for a sort of soft landing. If you start steering to compensate there is a high chance that you steer the wrong way.

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure Andre!
      Slow speed = just before you sink in to the water without steering your kite up and down
      Medium speed = Cruising speed a speed that you feel comfortable riding
      High speed = the fastest you can still ride whilst keeping control
      The perception of these speeds changes soo much from person to person, but also between different levels. High speeds for a beginner are way slower than high speeds for an advanced rider.
      Therefor I can't really put a km/h number to it. Hope this still helps you though

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say, the 8m loops a lot better but looking at the wind speeds you would be better of with a 9m for maximum jump height. Think I would still tend more towards the 8m

    Got tips for jumps on choppy water / or wavy sea when you jump mainly with the 'wrong foot forward'? It's so hard to time cause boosting gets interrupted by the chop or a wave buttchecks.

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Riding in choppy conditions is always hard especially if you try to take off with speed. Try and ride slow so you have more time before you hit the next chop. (grabbing a bigger kite might help with this) Next to that you have to time your jump between the chop and use the small wave as a kicker. Sometimes there's just enough space to fit your board in the "valley".

    Hi Steven, I still don't understand unfortunately what is meant by park die kite. Jumping, and stopping the kite at 12 o'clock immediately after the board break? So calling the kite slightly forward immediately after the jump? I managed to reach 9 meters with a jump, but the landings still don't go well at all.

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just after your jump you try to keep your kite between 12 and 12:30 (or 12 and 11:30 when you're riding the other side) Most of the time you achieve this with a small correction on the bar (small steering input).
      Hope this helps, best of luck with your landings.

    How to avoid accidentially rotating (backrolling) when focusing on super hard carving just before takeoff?
    I ask because it always gets me and i now got a bit back to the point where i just edge instead of carving bevorr takeoff.

    • @stevenakkersdijk
      @stevenakkersdijk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When carving to the wind it's important to do a little kick with the back foot at the end of your carve. Like that you counter the backwards rotation. It's also possible that you go in to a backroll because your fin slips out during the last part of the carve and you loose your edge. If that happens it's important to look at your weight distribution on the board and maybe lean a bit more on the front foot.

    Because i always did this so far (for whatever reason 🙈) and still di struggle to get reproducible with ma jumps.

    • @stevenakkersdijk

      When you steer the kite too agressive it will fly in front of you instead of above. This results in a jump that's far, but not very high. So it's best to slow down your steering.

    Speed is the most common thing I see people failing to get. I would say you go as fast as you can control your edge and and send it.
