Just hoping that everything turns out well for Mappa & the animators especially. These schedules are brutal.
I doubt that especially if otsuka is not gonna be replaced. Both the jjk anime and the csm anime will just go on a loop and the seshimo line of animators will be binded unless if they themselves decide to leave or not work on the projects.
its because they have no growth outside of JJK & AoT. they are the disney of japan. acquiring IPs that are already popular. Thats why merch companies are eating good with Wit, A-1 & Cloverworks and their new IPs: Lycoris Recoil, Dress Up Darling, Bocchi the Rock & SpyxFamily. They are focus on lifting IPs that barely anyone knew existed
@@bryana.escaleralopezMappa makes their IPs way more popular than before they acquired them. Besides just because a studio takes a relatively unknown series and makes it popular doesn’t mean that will happen alll the time. There is much more risk with series like those instead of series like JJK where they have a fanbase already, so the only thing the studio can do at that point is go up and build up that popularity.
Honestly Mappa at this point is so popular that anything they grab at this point people are coming to watch regardless of what the series is.
Hopefully not MAPPA, but i hope the animators manage to stay afloat and find bbetter studios

Never in a million years i'd thought aot adaptating the most difficult stretch of the manga to animate would unironically be the healthiest and most stable production inside of mappa (with the info we have). and that's even considering they planned to release all of it in march 3rd. it was really a miracle they realized that this would've not work and decided to delay it, almost like the production committe turned sane for the first time in the last 3 years. not that it makes the schedule perfect, but it's wild how it's better (schedule wise) than one of their priority animes.
I really like this TH-camr he seems really informed and goes in-depth on the animation of the anime. It gets annoying when someone uninformed goes off about animation having no idea what they're talking about.
Mankoman is another TH-camr that talks about animation. He mostly does animation breakdowns .
Might I also suggest Registry. He is another TH-camr who does Animation Breakdowns along with Comparisons to the Manga. Sometimes they are two in one, sometimes separate. His upload frequency is comparatively less, but I think his videos are also equally insightful.
MAPPA making their employees sign an NDA is if not one of the worst practices in the business industry. It's really a disgusting move when you think about it.

Nah I think the NDA wasn't for hiding the work environment, it was probably against leaking production materials. The team just decided to complain nevertheless because the schedule is a wreck

I'm not gonna defend MAPPA because I believe their employees are overworked but NDAs are pretty much standard practice for the entertainment industry to prevent leaks, when I was applying in the gaming industry I had to sign an NDA in a couple companies just as part of my job application, I wasn't even hired lmao

But so far their upcoming projects in 1st dept is actually following it hopefully he didn't pick another demanding project to make everything mess again and most importantly fix the seshimo line they r the most overworked right now
Their first department is worse. Also almost every big studio is doing it but worse.
His ideal world is probably the creation of Seshimo clone. JJK and CSM NEED to be separate like how AOT are separated. Problem is there are no animators left in the industry at the required level want to join Mappa. Team Go would be an obvious choice, but way no hell they join

They already have connections to a lot of talents they just need better SCHEDULE to work on that's why I hate manabu he got all the talented people but can't provide a decent schedule to them specially seshimo line
After miso's experience with jjks2, I don't think we will see the GO team on any mappa project for a long time

That require establishing name recognition as the biggest anime studio, which Mappa has already got.
I just think he miscalculate and believe that Mappa name is still not big enough after JJK (best selling manga) and AOT (most popular modern anime), and think they need more.
Problem is he forgot human (top tier freelancer) is not just asset but a human with emotion too, and there’ll be a limit where they won’t work with Mappa anymore if he still hasn’t realize this.
Good thing staff is leaving and choosing to work with better production lines. I hope gosso also leaves after s2.

MAPPA will never learn from these mistakes. They'll continue to find animators to fill the gaps and so long as they put out shows in the allotted schedule they will continue to get more

I’m kinda excited for the last 10 episodes of JJK season 2 I heard that the schedule for these are a lot better and also are stacked. If true then I’m happy that they played this smart with the amount of time they had
Yeah, i wish it is on par to what they delivered in the first 5 eps. The flashback arc was so well animated, despite the changes in the art style. If the rumours are true, it will be great, to save the franchise.

The difference for me is that between mappa and ufotable is based on success: mappa has success in terms of jujutsu Kaisen, Vinland and others..but they always take big title mangas with high sales, which overloads their workers. They chose quantity over quality in terms of big names.
Whereas for ufotable, they picked up demon slayer because the manga itself was not as recognized and overlooked. They picked demon slayer because they knew it had potential, using time and resources that they had, the quality of the anime became their biggest jackpot. It’s not about the quantity of how many top anime’s you can make over your competitors, but it’s to bring out the potential of smaller authors stories and bringing to life. That’s what mappa is lacking, choosing big name titles and advancing them to quality animation, the animation and the quality will start to fade more in the years coming.
I think with the addition of the animators and names from hakuyu go team in ep 13 cour 2 will still look incredible, i expect a miso ep for sukuna vs jougo, obviously rumored kazuto arai and Takumi Sunakohara for ep 13 which will probably make it the most impressive action ep in s2 imo, k1ro, yoshihara, nakayama ep for mahito fight. we will probably see return of naoki miyajima and probably arifumi imai because i believe he isnt busy with other works rn so he could return for an episode. with all this talent i think cour 2 will manage to thrive. the cherry on top would he weilin zhang to appear for this project 🙏🙏 i will die in peace after that

JJK S2 was a cinematic masterpiece for those first 6 episodes. The team does great at hiding how its falling apart, and it manages to look beautiful every ep, but it's such a shame. Knowing that it could be a lot better if Manabu didn't suck is just MAPPA's motto at this point. I don't foresee the company remaining in the foreseeable future, seeing a mass exodus like SHAFT. At this point, anything that falls into their hands is bound to be subpar in one area or several, due to the simple matter of time. Studios like CloverWorks are no better with how many projects Aniplex pushes at a time, but MAPPA makes them look tame in comparison. They could be a KyoAni-tier studio if they just took on less projects, but that would mean less $$$ and we can't have that.
Yes the first 5-6 episodes were beautiful with the new director and animation style. We were already concern with this change but they were able to pull through and change our minds. Now with Shibuya I can see the people are split ones that are still sold the animation and direction are fine and those that are able to notice the shift and dip in quality from the previous Arc episodes.
Still though, nothing we can do but watch our favorite anime fall apart
Edit: Yuuji vs Choso was f 🔥 af omg! Still though you can see it required alot of animators to present such peak quality... hopefully they keep it up for the next fights
Eps 7 is still looks beautiful asf, eps 8 is where everything begin to tear apart.
With their explosive growth, hiring staff (and having one of the best in-house pays in the industry) and expanding in-house departments. They will get bankrupt if they don't do this. Also funny how you don't mention other big studios like OLM or lidenfilms that are doing the same or worse without those insane connections (that Mappa has)
@@A1000-b9s I quite literally cited another anime studio and said they’re all shit. Learn to read. MAPPA is just the worst of the bunch and the most prolific because of the amount of big name shows they take on. What they’re doing isn’t new. They’re have been quite a few anime studios of old that have done the exact same as them and gone bankrupt and/or had staff leave and make a new studio. That’s how Bugs Films was made, even, and also why so many Shafy animators are at David Pro.
@@To-To because they don't make any money from Their shows. That's how they get bankrupt. Mappa does invest in their shows more and more, so they can make money from Their shows. CLW or A-1 are a much Smaller studio but they do the same amount as Mappa (but CLW shows usually look Really good because they have some of the best APs in the industry). Tight schedule is usually very common in anime industry (because of too many shows and production committees). It's mostly about how APs handle their projects. Why would a lot of people Join Mappa or work for their shows (because It mostly makes names for them) regardless of the schedule

@@anotheryoutubeuser Not really, only Fukushi line is the one that has the passion projects and even then some of them like Frieren don't have good enough schedules(although they're currently way better than Seshimo in schedule) and have to use outsourcing. Also Madhouse aside from that line don't really pump out high quality projects compared to MAPPA where they have Hayashi line with AOT. I do agree though that Fukushi line is standing in a way more stable spot than Seshimo though but the rest of Madhouse don't have much.

The BluRay version looks worse in some cases in regards to the character designs.
"Slowly but surely falling apart." Yeaa idk about that claim, boss. With that opening i expected a more in depth and nuanced discussion about the state of the studio, but it was just things i believe most of your follower are already aware. I expected much more than the standard anituber "Mappa le evil" content.
Manabu Ohtsuka have been pretty open about his approach, said he wants to reach the point of growth that normaly took 25 years in a much shorter time, even noting he's aware that rush often leads to failure, but he think this is the only way... You can discuss why probably does he think that way.
Besides the poor work condition they currently have, are they actually progressing towards better stability like Ohtsuka promised? What are their animator salary looking like? We can also get some clues by looking at their in house growth, are they growing or leaking talents? How is their profit participation in their projects? that's also a key factor for stability that studio like KyoAni have.
I also believe there's might be some nuance to discuss between some projects that seems like true disaster "we can't give you any resource" vs projects that accepts some compromise in quality to give younger staff a chance.
We can also compare the result of Mappa's approach to other independent studio that is more traditional slowly expanding approach like White Fox, Kinema, P.A etc (a deepdive into bibury might also be interesting). Also worth discussing the approach of corporation backed studios like A1,WIT,Cygames etc are going for lately.
Again, I fully support what you are doing here, and i believe you are capable of much more, keep up the good work!
I very clearly referred to the studio's reputation amongst the average fandom "falling apart" not the studio itself. Also, the main idea behind this video was to acknowledge the visible cracks in some of the newer productions, and try to offer an explanation for the same.
This was NOT a look at MAPPA as a whole, obviously not because if it was, I would've gone into a lot of additional topics (some of which were mentioned by you). This video was a look at the major IPs and the issues faced by the same (hence the title of the video). Although an overall look at the studio does sound like an interesting topic, definitely one worth covering at some point down the line.
@@ProbablyPretentious Ok maybe I misheard the opening statement, i dont think it is very clear in the way it is said lol. but anyway, even talking reputation among average fandom nothing much i forsee will change tbh, the average standard is just that low. AoT perception will rise even more considering the better production expected for the final special. Even average reception on jigo quality i saw on MAL, reddit, twitter, youtube reaction etc were positive. JJK? Some people be mad when Gojo's pose is different than the manga, and the ghosting dimming stuff, otherwise average fans are still highly praising Mappa, especially for strong drawing moments like souta yamazaki's.
As for people more interested in the production side, I think nothing much new is offered in this video tbh, definitely would be better if you can educate people about Mappa & their place compared to the rest of the industry in depth, because i think people have heard enough about the Mappa evil greedy satan side of the story.
I decided to wait until the entire shibuya event is over before watching. Hopefully that way, the cracks wont be so noticable
The thing is that cracks aren’t noticeable if you are a casual viewer. They’re only mostly visible if you are knowledgeable about Sakuga and animation. So it doesn’t really matter if you watch it on weekly basis or binge it

I appreciate seeing someone give a real honest take on whats going on behind the scenes. Its great seeing people be super excited for JJK season 2 but the vast majority don't seem to care that the studio has pretty big internal problems to solve.

i am watching again this video today and when you mentioned how will 22nd episode look,i thought, those animators are monsters, they pulled it throgh with, props to them but i am sad also that they could not express their vision to the fullest
It's really weird how indeed the Hidden Inventory arc from jjk looked (imo) absolutely flawless, just for them to right after it to drop the ball so hard. Key moments are still good, don't get me wrong (like Gojo fighting the disaster curses), the but really seems to be a lack of polish for "run of the mill" scene, unlike in the previous arc, which even the goofiest stuff was animated amazingly.
arguably id even say that the whole Hidden Inventory arc was peak jujutsu to me, simply because of the much more fitting (and efficient) art-style used, in order to make action more fluid, and overall be a little bit more flexible with silhouttes and whatnot.
Good video, cause a lot of people, myself included, are being quite vocal about the production problems. Nice that we've gotten some explanation as to why...

Tbh as a anime watcher that has watched boruto black clover and even mha i can proudly say jjk has timesss better animation than all three combined
Boruto canon peak episodes>JJK though. Literally Momoshiki vs Naruto & Sasuke, Sasuke vs Kinshiki, Jigen vs Naruto & Sasuke, Isshiki vs Naruto are top tier. JJKs fights are animated well of course, but those Boruto ones are insane and slightly above imo.

I think the jjk art style doesn’t look unique enough for most people to recognize off model cuts. And since the compositing and colors for jjk season 2 is still really good most people will think it still looks as good as season 1. I think that is a fair trade off. Save motion for the highlights of the season. This is common for modern anime. The first seasons get amazing production and it slowly dips

Hidden Inventory Arc was so beautiful though! But yes 😞 it started to fall apart near the end and the start of Shibuya
I hope JJK will still look great troughout the rest of the season, some of inconsistencies are ok to watch (except the cricket episode, it sucks) so if they keep this level of production it will be ok.

A anime original directed by Shinichiro Watanabe named Lazrus, Bucchigiri( both have amazing schedule as per insider schedules). Rumoured CSM movie and a season 2 as Tatsuta Yoshihara is busy till 2028.
Potentially they are also working on OPM S3

Mappa is one of my favourite studios. I don't mind waiting even one month for one episode. Employees shouldn't be overworked. JJK has been amazing till now. I don't want talented animators to leave the studio and dropping the quality of this anime.
I’m really hoping something is done about this. People keep asking for csm season 2 but honesty I don’t want to see Mappa continue it. The animators really need breathing room especially after how the JJK ship has been sinking

I think you’re over exaggerating the errors in the animation quality even though it’s limited it’s not the end of the world. It still looks very consistent in its art and compositing. Also because of the tight schedule they have to put more priority towards the more important fights. I think jjk looks great but if mappa continues to have worse and worse time issues and management jjk might need to see a studio change to a good well known studio. I want to see mappa do jjk but if the team is struggling their ass off do to bad scheduling then the show will need to be handed to someone else.

Why doesn’t mappa just give away their projects to other studios. They don’t have to overload themselves with so many popular mangas and giving the advanced animations for fans expectation. As long as the story is still meaningful, it doesn’t matter the animation, what matters if the messaging of that story.
I just want to say, while I was watching hell's paradise, I didn't think the animation was bad. I don't know if the story had me too gripped to notice it, but honestly I enjoyed every bit of it and it never felt bad. I don't remember having seen a badly animated scene like the Juji vs grasshopper fight, for example. Maybe our standards are going higher than the people in anime studios can deliver. Not blaming them, of course, but the industry.

5 or 10 yrs ago I would have told you that Madhouse or Trigger is the best animation studio. But now Mappa has gotten so big and influential that they're always trying to expanding and outperform other studios. Funny how it became the very thing it swore to destroy.

Madhouse literally went bankrupt in early 2011 but was saved by being bought out. Dozens of talented directors and animators left and formed new Studio Mappa. Now Madhouse staff can't be as ambitious or creative as they once were by gambling on anime-original shows and had to play it safe by adapting from stuff with source material.
I do agree the Seshimo line is shit in their current schedule but I think you’re overplaying the flaws a little. I would call current Shibuya great but full of flaws with the episodes with more flaws 8, 12 being more on the decent/good side. At least cour 2 seems better according to a reliable leaker on twitter with stacked names next week. Also isn’t first department at Mappa pretty stable. You didn’t talk much about the lines outside of Hayashi and Seshimo but aside from Jigo, most of the projects like Maboroshi and Lazarus have good stable schedules and good talent as well. Also AOT with Part 3 and 4 have schedule more on the side of decent/good than bad which is good.
I'm not assessing JJK as an average anime, I'm looking at it as an amalgamation of the most talented animators across the entire industry, and by those standards, the flaws are glaring, to me at least. I did say they are prioritizing certain episodes, I wouldn't be surprised if Ep 13 looks absolutely stunning. I didn't mention the lines outside of hayashi and Seshimo, cuz they are the main ones that produce more than one show. Lazarus isn't out yet, and Maboroshi is a film production, I don't know if Okada will have her own line at Mappa or dip after this project, so I refrained from talking about it. I am a bit harsh on the AOT schedule cuz it's one of my favorite shows, so the upper management fucking it over is really annoying (of course things are better now, but you get the idea).
@@ProbablyPretentious Ah ok thanks for the reply, I do agree that JJK should've looked better with a decent schedule or no CSM between 0 and Season 2 but I still think the weaker episodes still look good and have some amazing moments like Yamazaki's corrections in 12. Hopefully rest of Shibuya turns out great because this part of Shibuya have some of my favorite moments in manga in general.
The talent is what will carry jujutsu kaisen, big names from the Hakuyu Go line and Seshimo line will carry this product

Saying “thank you studio mappa for a good show”, is easier than thanking each individual animator by name. Because those animators are mappa, they create the product. They are easily the best animators out there currently. They give movies level animation quality in there tv shows constantly. Plus they executives have good taste in what manga to acquire for animation. Yes the animators are over worked. Studio Giblis animators are over works under Miyazaki. Excellence requires goin the extra mile. I applaud the animators at mappa for their determination to deliver a great product. And I understand those that choose to leave the company because of the working conditions. It’s not for everyone.
Just imagine if they didn't pick up everything and anything (Hells paradise) how great the Shibuya arc would look... it should look as good as OPM 1st season

I mean the fact that there are so many problems and yet the quality is still so high compared to most anime shows you how much talent is working on these shows. Chainsaw, JJK, Vinland Saga, AOT. That's crazy. Hopefully now Hayashi and his team will be able to take a breather or help the other teams if they need it, since AOT is coming to an end. For me JJK season 2 looks great. Episode 8 was the only one where I really noticed lower quality. I really enjoyed episode 12 as well. And like you said I have no idea why you would pick up Hells Paradise when you are already working on so much else. What a waste for that manga. Hopefully it changes studio for season 2 or gets a better production. That show has so much potential.
It's straight up to refer to Vinland Saga as "WIT team" when none of the core staff are actual Wit people.

Picking up more shows doesn't even theoretically equate to more profit. Or at the very least:It doesn't equal profit in the long run.
Vinland should not be counted. It had its own team that are not from MAPPA

I do want to get the shibuya arc in the best quality and as quick as possible since its my favourite arc in the whole series but at the cost of animators health is just dumb so i have zero problem if they take the aot route and take a little break or something just my opinion tho
AOT S4 has its world expanded beyond the scope of what we knew the last 3 seasons. Shibuya in the JJK manga only ramps up the story from where season 1 left off.
It is a shame at such crucial points of their respective series that quality dips from the result of production hell. It may be my qualms as a JJK manga reader but I think JJK S2 could’ve been even greater, at least in terms of animation quality.

Mans forgot MADHOUSE did OPM, then Natsume's next two series. And now Frieren.
Just because they aren't trying to adapt every hot property doesn't mean they don't make quality work. It's not every production, but it's much more sustainable than past MADHOUSE or current MAPPA.
You know than Madhouse have a lot anime in their history. Mappa was build from old Madhouse staff. In terms of quality, Madhouse is one of the best animation studio of all time.

Yeah the pacing and direction of that fight was weird but honestly the animation was the best thing about it. The chase scene was impressive.

At this point. I prefer jujutsu in another studio like trigger or Bones. Im not gonna say Ufotable because kimetsu situation is very uncommon. Ufotable still prefer games adaptations

And no, they aren’t as bad as he is making it seem here on this video. Do these shows have dips in quality, yes. But it’s not terrible. I would say Attack on Titan had the worse dips with the CGI, but shows like Jujutsu Kaisen has not had much bad moments.

Nothing new for an animation studio. Heavy workloads and brutal schedules is everywhere in Japan, and not just in the animation industry. These stories are old, and just ger recycled again and again. Mappa will most likely still pump out the same amount of content, no matter the controversy the studio faces. Why you may ask, and it's simple; Because their productions bring in money, so HR has no reason to complain in the slightest.
They should just focus on jjk & csm🤦♂️
That makes me getting reminded on why I kind of want Chainsaw Man to animated by a different studio (*cough* *cough* WhiteFox *cough* *cough*) and ngl that I already experienced nothing but red flags with the MAPPA version of CSM once I watch it and heard what on earth happen with Hironori Tanaka in Episode 9...

Production IG isn't a heaven's gate either. Working condition at WIT is way worse than MAPPA'S, they literally had to drop Vinland saga and AOT.

Season 2 is a big downgrade from season 1 , the fact that people have to use the excuse of” these are just low priority episodes “ tells you all you need to know 😂😂. Yea the composition got better but its like they forgot what even made jjk so popular in the first place which are the fluid movement and animation and improved and extended fights . In season 1 they made it look like every fight was important.
