If one doesn't know if sim racing is something for you, consider to get the gear second hand. Often the prices will be down to 50%. Even pretty new stuff (2-3 months old) is sold for 2/3 of the original price. I got my GT-Omega wheel stand for 80€ instead of 130€.
Started out with T300RS/T3PA pedals/TH8A shifter/Wheelstand Pro all second hand for €250 (only had to buy the missing TH8A usb cable from TM) Bought an extra rim and modded it with an Acelith mod and wrapped the other in faux suede. Added 2nd hand CSL load cell pedals and a 2nd hand Oculus Rift CV1. (now I'm pretty much No VR No buy xD) Sold the lot at once (kept the upgraded pedals and VR). Bought a second hand CSW 2.5 + F1 V2 with APM. Bought the NXL racing DD stand on sale for €190. Then upgraded it with a Universal hub (and D-shape QSP rim) and SQ 1.5 shifter (on black friday sale). And a 2nd hand P100 rim for rally and some gloves. Sold the CSW 2.5 + P100 rim. Bought the CSL DD boost kit + CS magnetic shifter set of the UH. And bought a Sparco rim for Rally (but use the QSP rim for it now as the Sparco was a bit heavy) Bought a 2nd hand analog handbrake (the real converted to hall sensor, Chinese kind) Mounted my old 'racing' gaming chair on a (free) small frame with wheels to attach to the wheel stand to make a makeshift rig. Due to deals, buying/selling 2nd hand, I have a decent setup now. And if I would sell the lot now, I'd be hardly any money in, for a couple of years of enjoying it. My advice, buy 2nd hand and look out for deals. Sell your stuff when you've saved up a bit to upgrade and your current gear is still worth something. Don't start out with the cheapest stuff (below G29 or even including it) and if you do, make sure you can get it for an absolute bargain. And watch out, sim racing gear is a slippery slope! xD For instance, I would've gotten more for my CSW 2.5 if I sold it a month or 2 earlier, but less, a month or 2 later. But that would've left me without a wheelbase. With more competition and more affordable entry level direct drive wheels and better mid-range pedals, the future for beginners looks bright. If inflation and global pressures on production etc. don't persist or get worse, in a couple years there should be pretty affordable DD setups available on the 2nd hand market.
Yes, there are so many directions we can go for racing games. I have always been doing SIM racing on the PC and on the STEAM platform. One nice item besides the ones you mention in the video is using VR - many of the popular racing games now support this on the PC. This is not really a budget item or a necessity, but once you have used VR, you really don't want to go back to racing on the FLAT screen. Another visual FAD is using 3 displays for better visual driving. That gets costly also depending on display sizes. Thanks for the video.
Honestly, I would just recommend people to look for used. Get a used T300RS and tighten the belt. It's really easy to do and you are good to go. Find some used decent TLCM, Fanatec V3, DC Simracing, Simforge Mark 1 or BJ Steel pedals for upgrade and/or Playseat Challenge (or if you have more cash on hand, a used AluRig). With enough searching and bargaining I got a full Rig with Direct Drive, proper Buttonplate, Alurig & Pedals on par with the Heusinkveld Sprint for ~1000€. That's still a lot of money, but it also shows you can save money, if buying smart.
I'll tell you what's cheap: Just scored a Logitech DriveFX for 25 bucks. Set it up with 2 planks on my Ikea Poang in front of my 42 inch TV. It works excellent on X360 and PC with decent enough FFB. My potato laptop can run Rallysimfans RBR and all the great old, GT Legends, GTR2, rFactor etc. Is it anything close to a DD thing ? Hell no. Is it a blast to play and try to do clean laps ? Hell yes. And nice bonus: I can play at night in my apartment and keep the neighbours happy.
Cool video, my only issue was that in the sim racing world a 25$ sim is considered expensive, but then also they say to have any fun you have to get a 1000$ pc.
Tsrb: *mentions that if your on a low budget to get a used Logitech g27* Me, a broke engineering student: “nah imma get a broken Logitech G25 on EBay that the seller lied about working, I’ll overpay, then proceed to fix it and somehow make it work.”
I absolutely love my g920. I can hang with the best of drifters and overtake aliens on the racetrack, not only that but the aftermarket mods are insane ! Such a killer wheel tbh
how has the t248 been for you? i am trying to choose between it and the g29 and the only things stopping me from going for the t248 is the price of the stick shifter and the time it takes to recenter. of course, i've never had a ffb wheel before so the latter probably doesnt matter too much
don't forget you can get a great deal on a used wheel from someone else who is upgrading - I got my used T150 for $120. It's not amazing but it adds a ton of fun and playability to Gran Turismo
This might sound cheap but its all I can afford and its doing me well. I have a pxn v9 and its very good for what I like to do which is drifting it doesnt have force feedback but its good for me
Why is "live for speed" missing from the sim list EVERY TIME? ALWAYS... NOBODY knows it exists and I've been playing it for 15 years. Just watch "Live for Speed S2 - why i play" !
Live For Speed is brilliant. I played on that one demo track for about a decade before only a couple of years ago upgrading to S2. I still mainly drive Blackwood, but now knowing I at least gave the dev team a little bit of money for all those years of fun.
have disassembled the Thrustmaster TX wheel because I had to repair the steering wheel that was off-center and it was really very easy and inside it is much superior to the Logitech steering wheels that also repaired the steering wheel of my g27 that was cracked and I repaired it by hitting it a metal washer and it looks like new, the surprising thing is that Logitech despite having released newer models like the g923 g920 are all the same inside and they continue to manufacture them with that piece of plastic that breaks and the steering wheel loses centering
One thing you didn't mention was monitors. I get that this was a budget-focused video, but I'm slowly putting together bits and pieces to get into sim racing myself and am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I need either a big curved monitor or a three monitor setup - or, possibly, a VR headset.
Great wrap, been looking to get a bit more serious with the sim racers and this was a great guide to let me know I'm on the right track. Feeling a cockpit would be very beneficial. Keep it up 🙌
If you're a casual gamer or not sure if you'll will put a lot of time on it, I've just buy a logitech momo ffb for 5$ and Assetto Corssa ultimate on sale for 10$, and play it on the computer that I already have! It make me happy, I have fun, and I really call it Sim racing on a budget!
AC is the cheapest if you consider all DLC, but as a base title with no extra DLC RaceRoom is the cheapest (free).... but the free players are limited to 5 circuits (Portimao, Sepang, Stowe, and the fictional tracks of Lakeview Hillclimb, and RaceRoom Raceway, plus variants), and a handful of cars (Formula Jr Cup, Silhouette Concepts, Aquila CR1 Cup, Judd Hillclimb car, Saleen SR7 GT1, Prototypes 1&2).
as someone who plays on xbox, i can totally confirm that forza is pretty awkward their latest motorsport game forza motorsport 7 (although currently it is offsale) had quite a bit of rammers and (maybe it was just me, i don't know) the cars felt really slippery. i'd definetly reccomend ps4 if you want competition
I also play on Xbox and I gotta say you can also get competition here. Just try Asseto Corsa, its been lately on sale for all the time for like 8€ with all the Dlcs. I dont know on wich Xbox you are playing but on the Series X it makes a good Simulator wich runs really smooth
@@Daniel-gq6pe you completely missed the point bro, ps4 also has assetto corsa, that game doesn't matter, the only 2 star games both consoles have are gran turismo in the ps4 and forzá on the Xbox, thing is, that's all you gotta pick, the dude is saying that forza is lacking and it feels slippery so he recommends picking the ps4 instead, both consoles are similar in price so it shouldnt be much of a difference.

I've been playing on a new Logitech G920 for two days now. Totally new to any kind of sim racing or using a wheel/pedals but I bought the wheel for F1 2020 gameplay and after tweaking some settings around and adjusting the clamps properly to my desk (took a few google searches) it really is all I could ask for. As much as I wanted a more high end wheel like the T300RS I am happy with the choice I made. In a year, who knows? Maybe I regret my decision but for now I am very pleased with the G920 for a first time wheel/pedal user edit: PC
I bought my Thrustmaster TX for my Xbox Series X for €120 and for my PC I bought a Logitech G27 for €30 and on my PS4 I use a Thrustmaster 150 which I bought for €60. The g27 for PC was the best buy and is on par with a G923. The g923 is not worth buying. There is a difference between the G27 and the Thrustmaster TX but the feel and realism is better on the tx, the Tx feels better I can also use it on PC
I recently bought first wheel. I bought a tx base with t3pa pedals, ferrari 599xxevo wheel, ferrari 458 rim, wheel stand Pro. I also bought asseto corsa ultimate for 6gbp and f1 2021 for 11gbp both on sale for 80% off on the Microsoft store
Been considering getting myself a wheel, just waiting for the right one to come up. Video is a great overview covering a little of everything in a good length vid! Thanks!
Yeah, definitely wait. This era of sim racing gear is kind of lame compared to what it was a couple of years ago. Not very many mid range wheel / pedal setups at a reasonable price at the moment. I think most manufacturers are starting to look at direct drive wheel bases, and phasing out belt driven. Which is a shame, because the cost are going to continue to go up.
Thanks for the detailed guide. I grew up with the Gran Tursimo series and used a cheap non-FFB wheel and had a blast as a kid. Now I mess around in BeamNG and Forza with a gamepad, I've been meaning to get myself a proper wheel this time.
Best budget sim racing setup in 2022? A logitech formula force EX for 8 USD. (yes it has force feedback) But in all seriousness a logitech momo for around 20 USD is probably a better deal.
my QUICK guide for THE CHEAPEST sim racing is as followed : get a logitech driving force pro ( 50 ) get a table stand ( 35 ) get a nice but cheap chair ( 15 /20 ) for roughly 100 bucks you got a 900 degree wheel a stand and a chair
Dude listen these simulation racing set-ups are affordable in the prices u gave in US dollar💵 and European eur💶 and this is not cheap in South Africa it's around 6000-9000 for a simulation racing set-up
Look for a used Logitech G25 or 27 (my daughter just picked one in mint condition for just 50€ just the price just pay for the seperate shifter for the 920). I'm simming since decades (starting of course with keyboard, later with wheels without FFB) i never regret buying a used wheel you can't save more money, 1080p monitor, a midclass GPU ( adjust graphic settings to capability of GPU NOT the other way round) look for cheap steam keys (can also save lots of money) use an older Simulator and not the newest AAA-title, even older hardware will run the sim sufficiently. If budget is not an issue of course you can buy 10000 Setup that will run even the latest AAA-title in the highest settings with RT at whopping FPS, but thats not what is simming like, and of course not the topic of starting cheap. Therefore i would recommend titles like AC not ACC , because cheaper, modable and lower hardware requirements. You can still sim with a decent computer from 2012 sandybridge or bulldozer based, just having an SSD should be mandatory.
Another couple Sim games that are really good are snowrunner for offroad and live for speed for just about everything when your pc sucks. I don't have a good pc so live for speed is my assetto corsa.
We bought a PS4 so I could play GT Sport and when GT7 came out I preordered it for the PS4. I would love to experience playing with a wheel. My only question is that all I need is a wheel and pedals? They plug directly into the console? I don't need a wheel base or any other technology for the peripherals to work?

Recently got a G29 for 260$ off of Amazon and am waiting for the shifter, so far I am enjoying the sim racing experience, I enjoy the mods that asseto supports and hopefully will invest in a hand brake and cockpit (if I get extra interested and have space lol)
If you have a 3d printer and basic electronics knowledge you can 3d print a analog handbrake, mine is almost done just need to modify the 2 parts holding the potenciometer since mine is almost double the length of the one in the video.

@@almaefogo who tf is on a tight budget but has a 3d printer lol
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j having a budget doesn't mean you only have 10€ to spend, it means you have a limited amount of money to spend, for example I'm on a budget to buy a sim handbrake so it was cheaper to print and assemble one since I already have a printer, having a budget doesn't mean someone is poor or doesn't have the money it just mean that they have limited money to spend on something, the budget may be 50€ or 20000€ it just depends on what you have or are willing to spend on something.
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j also my printer was 180€ voxelab aquila, so far I upgraded it with a lot more stuff, close to 300€ I had to spend on parts and tools I needed but most don't need or have the time to thinker with it, the main difference is that before something took almost 15 hours to make I can now make it in 5 hours
@@almaefogo still don't think many have them at all, but I had no idea that there were 3d printers that cheap. Thought they were much more expensive
A lot of good looking records classics in this tutorial, I recognized almost all tracks, very good music choice
I bought my friends old G29(with h pattern) and a Walmart special gaming PC and I have zero regrets.
If one doesn't know if sim racing is something for you, consider to get the gear second hand. Often the prices will be down to 50%. Even pretty new stuff (2-3 months old) is sold for 2/3 of the original price.
I got my GT-Omega wheel stand for 80€ instead of 130€.
That's basically what I did. Bought a t500 for less than a new g920.
@@S41t4r4 Same here :)
Started out with T300RS/T3PA pedals/TH8A shifter/Wheelstand Pro all second hand for €250 (only had to buy the missing TH8A usb cable from TM)
Bought an extra rim and modded it with an Acelith mod and wrapped the other in faux suede.
Added 2nd hand CSL load cell pedals and a 2nd hand Oculus Rift CV1. (now I'm pretty much No VR No buy xD)
Sold the lot at once (kept the upgraded pedals and VR).
And bought a Sparco rim for Rally (but use the QSP rim for it now as the Sparco was a bit heavy)
Bought a 2nd hand analog handbrake (the real converted to hall sensor, Chinese kind)
Mounted my old 'racing' gaming chair on a (free) small frame with wheels to attach to the wheel stand to make a makeshift rig.
And watch out, sim racing gear is a slippery slope! xD
For instance, I would've gotten more for my CSW 2.5 if I sold it a month or 2 earlier, but less, a month or 2 later.
1:45 This man's spitting some facts I'm subscribing rn! X)
But seriously, your video was helpful and well made, helped me decide which way to go!
Just got a g923, it does the job perfect, it has updated software witch you won't notice until you play newer game. Gt7 for example
I think the cheapest but really good combo wheel-pedals is the Thrustmaster TMX wheel (200$) and the Thrustmaster T3PM pedals(100$)
Finally buying assetto corsa and this is gonna be very helpful 😄
Be sure to buy the ultimate edition,! You can get it very cheap (check Instant Gaming they most of times have very good deals on AC Ultimate)
Amazing, thought my spotify was playing bc you have bangers in the background, love em all.
Cool video, my only issue was that in the sim racing world a 25$ sim is considered expensive, but then also they say to have any fun you have to get a 1000$ pc.
If this video came out a week ago I would have had a much easier time finding a wheel
Tsrb: *mentions that if your on a low budget to get a used Logitech g27*
Me, a broke engineering student: “nah imma get a broken Logitech G25 on EBay that the seller lied about working, I’ll overpay, then proceed to fix it and somehow make it work.”
For those have more budget but fanatec too expensive, maybe wait thrustmaster's direct drive series in 2022 it should be cheaper
I absolutely love my g920. I can hang with the best of drifters and overtake aliens on the racetrack, not only that but the aftermarket mods are insane ! Such a killer wheel tbh
I was going to get the TMX, but I ended up going with the T248 (which wasn't out when this video was released.)
how has the t248 been for you? i am trying to choose between it and the g29 and the only things stopping me from going for the t248 is the price of the stick shifter and the time it takes to recenter. of course, i've never had a ffb wheel before so the latter probably doesnt matter too much
don't forget you can get a great deal on a used wheel from someone else who is upgrading - I got my used T150 for $120. It's not amazing but it adds a ton of fun and playability to Gran Turismo
Remember when Ebay had a 'wantred' section? Aaaaah those were the days.
Great video! I need a lot of advice and this has given me a good idea of what i need to get. Now i’ve got to figure out where to set it up!
After seeing the prices imma stay with my controller
Thanks for the review, the most important for me was the game area, because never was too clear about what game you can start with.
This might sound cheap but its all I can afford and its doing me well. I have a pxn v9 and its very good for what I like to do which is drifting it doesnt have force feedback but its good for me
Absolutely nothing wrong with that whatsoever. The main point is that it works, and your having fun with it! 👍
If you buy a G27 you need to make sure it's plugged into a USB2 port. It really doesn't like usb 3 and will act very erratically.
My wheel g27, it's good wheel.
The background music is from DJ Bailey’s intelligent drum & bass mix. I was just listening to that right before I watched this video.
have disassembled the Thrustmaster TX wheel because I had to repair the steering wheel that was off-center and it was really very easy and inside it is much superior to the Logitech steering wheels that also repaired the steering wheel of my g27 that was cracked and I repaired it by hitting it a metal washer and it looks like new, the surprising thing is that Logitech despite having released newer models like the g923 g920 are all the same inside and they continue to manufacture them with that piece of plastic that breaks and the steering wheel loses centering
Thank you! That was exactly the information I was looking for. Well presented and to the point.
One thing you didn't mention was monitors. I get that this was a budget-focused video, but I'm slowly putting together bits and pieces to get into sim racing myself and am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I need either a big curved monitor or a three monitor setup - or, possibly, a VR headset.
Cheers. This was hands down the best sim guide I've seen
As an old Sim Racer…… this is good advice
AC is the cheapest if you consider all DLC, but as a base title with no extra DLC RaceRoom is the cheapest (free).... but the free players are limited to 5 circuits (Portimao, Sepang, Stowe, and the fictional tracks of Lakeview Hillclimb, and RaceRoom Raceway, plus variants), and a handful of cars (Formula Jr Cup, Silhouette Concepts, Aquila CR1 Cup, Judd Hillclimb car, Saleen SR7 GT1, Prototypes 1&2).
as someone who plays on xbox, i can totally confirm that forza is pretty awkward
their latest motorsport game forza motorsport 7 (although currently it is offsale) had quite a bit of rammers and (maybe it was just me, i don't know) the cars felt really slippery. i'd definetly reccomend ps4 if you want competition
Was able to pick up the g29 with the shifter for $280, loving it
Thank you for the atmo/intelligent dnb!!!! Earned a sub from that alone!
Already own a PS5 with GT7 so I went the PSVR2 with second hand G29 and that apex stand route.
Maybe one day I’ll get a direct drive wheel, but those are very expensive at the moment
me deciding on which $100 wheel to get on amazon so decides to watch a video
the logitech a is perfect option for a budget wheel *only for $400!*
Solid video, thank you^^
Will get started on sim racing on ps4 with gran Turismo 7
I need to figure out what wheel I want to buy so I can get into sim racing. I have enough stuff to build a sort of cockpit, a Recaro seat and tools lol.
Maybe I regret my decision but for now I am very pleased with the G920 for a first time wheel/pedal user
edit: PC
How is it now? thinking of getting the logitech ones.
@@mcdavsey9910 just got one used for 200, great wheel
@Markster there is a ton of difference with G920?
just got started in racing sim due many tickets IRL, got a g923 for 200$, and saving for the cockpit and VR headset in the future!
I honestly expected this to all be much more expensive. I'm going to have to look into this some more. Thanks
Best budget simracing? Quest 2, second hand thurstmaster t150, dirt rally 1.. runs on gtx 1070
Great post . I do not know how you did not mention IRacing. It is sick.
Not exactly a budget sim
I bought my Thrustmaster TX for my Xbox Series X for €120 and for my PC I bought a Logitech G27 for €30 and on my PS4 I use a Thrustmaster 150 which I bought for €60. The g27 for PC was the best buy and is on par with a G923. The g923 is not worth buying. There is a difference between the G27 and the Thrustmaster TX but the feel and realism is better on the tx, the Tx feels better I can also use it on PC
Wreckfest is a good call. Got better physics than the last few codemasters titles as well
That background music though❤ the memories
Hey man thanks for this video. Your info was everything I needed to know. Spot on mate.
Played between AC and Project Cars. i agree that AC is the foremost choice. Driving just felt right in it.
Build my own stand from some ply wood and 4x2, I based the dimensions around my own car, works fantastic and cost me £20
I recently bought first wheel.
Just bought a G29 for $150, loving it so far! Planning my next wheel to be a Fanatec DD
That's a big leap bro
Bruh I just paid $300 for it on Best Buy 🤡
how did you get it so cheap? im trying to get into the hobby but my budget is low because i am 15
I just bought Assetto Corsa Ultimate Edition on steam and now I'm here.
Well you did it backwards. Lol.
6:37 what dose the GT stand for
my QUICK guide for THE CHEAPEST sim racing is as followed :
get a logitech driving force pro ( 50 )
get a table stand ( 35 )
get a nice but cheap chair ( 15 /20 )
for roughly 100 bucks you got a 900 degree wheel a stand and a chair
got a microsoft sidewinder wheel from 1999, paid $18 aud for the thing, good wheel
Thanks! Really really thank! I really are searching a video like this!
if u live in the uk, curry’s have some good deals with wheels and rigs right now
7:28
lmao wreckfest at 4th place?
i wouldnt call it a sim in its driving but the racing online is very competetive when setup right
Dude listen these simulation racing set-ups are affordable in the prices u gave in US dollar💵 and European eur💶 and this is not cheap in South Africa it's around 6000-9000 for a simulation racing set-up
there is also RACE ROOM that can be downloaded for free, it has good graphics and sound and some cars and tracks to start with.
I don't know who you are, but you were in my recomendations and this video is just what I've needed
You've just found one of the best Sim racing youtubers in the whole internet, enjoy!
I use a G27 and a rig made from wood and a go kart seat
We bought a PS4 so I could play GT Sport and when GT7 came out I preordered it for the PS4. I would love to experience playing with a wheel. My only question is that all I need is a wheel and pedals? They plug directly into the console? I don't need a wheel base or any other technology for the peripherals to work?
Just Upgraded from a 180 degree thrustmaster wheel to a g29 like a month ago with a stand(its a gt omega too but not a apex), handbrake and shifter i have alot of fun with it in Beamng, assetto , ets
What happens if the shifter doesn’t have enough gears as the car?
Thats what the paddle shifters are for!
That's a good question actually
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A USED G29 FOR LITERAL AGES PLEASE SIM RACING BLOKE I GET THAT YOU WANTED TO MAKE A GUIDE BUT THE TIMING COULDNT BE WORSE. I JUST FOUND A 300 DOLLAR WHEEL WITH SHIFTER AND THEN SHE ASKED FOR A DOWNPAYMENT LIKE WTF WHO PUTS A DOWN-PAYMENT ON A STEERING WHEEL. Well anyways great video as always cheers!
Yeah, it seems like scalpers are having a field day with racing wheels, now.
Honestly this also goes for recommending buying a PC in 2022. Buying a PC will be a luxury for a couple of years. 😅
Good thing about Gran Turismo is that you don't need a sim rig to he fast but it definitely helps. In my case, all I have is a controller and I'm always getting in the top 100 lap times for the daily races I really want to push but yeah, looking to get a budget wheel for the fun of it
While technically not a sim Wreckfest is about as much fun you can have with your pants on!! Regarding wheels id recommend the Thrustmaster T300...
reasonable DD wheel will cost 600usd, 130st kit with TDD controller is the cheapest DD you'll find. been using mine for 1 year and it beats Fanatec DD1 and other DD wheels i've had on the past. as we all know cheap cockpit means flex units
This was really helpful thank you
Hi That Sim Racing Bloke, could you tell me about the soundtracks you used in this video because the drum and bass in this video is awesome!
Just bought my first ever racing steering wheel. I went for Thrustmaster T-GT 2.
