Despicable Me as a franchise was basically a warning to those that wanted a Megamind sequel. Just becuase the first one is good, doesn't mean it won't go downhill. Unfortunately for some, they only learned that lesson after the Megamind franchise had been ruined.....
I agree,It started with a pretty good movie. The First one was a solid launch and was a great start for illumination, sadly they Peaked with their first film. With actually well done emotional moment,a good plot and Minions only being SIDE characters who really dont take away from the main story.
The Minions actually had an integral part in the second film because the main villain was using them for his own nefarious plan, which was using the mutant serum on them to become his indestructible army and it was his attempt to get Gru to go back into villainy and join him. Everything else after the second film is when the Minions would be used for mainly filler.
If the minions were treated like how they were in Despicable Me then people wouldn’t hate them as much. But if they want to focus on the minions more then they could if they don’t scream and be stupid all the time. As well as bond with Gru more often.
I like Despicable Me, and it genuinely IS the best Illumination movie, but why is the second one being neglected? I understand the 3rd and 4th ones are garbage, but Despicable Me 2 is still a GREAT movie, just not on par with the first.
Even though the franchise doesn't compare to this first film, I personally think it would have been a lot better (or at least, more interesting) if Gru continued to be a villain even after adopting the girls. Of course, he should ultimately do good things by the end of each film (gotta have good morals for the kids), but otherwise it would have a ton of potential.
But he can't "have good morals for the kids" if he's a villain, no matter what kind of things he would do at the end of the films, it wouldn't erase or downplay the rest of things he would have done, that's one of the reasons why he changed, and that's also one reason why I think the change, both for the kids and himself, is a good one, what they would have to do would be something that would work with that premise and idea, but they could do it like with him being a villain and everything else, there are tons of films with heroes too
If they end up making a series from this film, it would be pretty fun if it took place after the girls and before Lucy, where Gru does villainous things to make his daughters happy. The pilot could open with him going on a heist where he steels Christmas presents for them. I wouldn't mind if they retcon some stuff.

I've been on a bit of a Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness nostalgia trip on TH-cam and didn't expect it to continue in a Despicable Me review. 😆 Great review. I think I can agree with all the points here. Very fun movie. Nothing super heart-wrenching, but enough to feel meaningful and let you connect to all the characters. Love the analysis about the architecture and interior, as well as Nefario being metaphors for Gru.
I like the second one I think the third one is worse but not horrible and the fourth one is way worse but I still enjoyed it the minions movie exists but rise of gru is actually pretty good
It’s like when a band gets really fucking popular off their first album causing them to try and rush out stuff as fast possible while forgetting to make sure what their putting out sounds good
They had changed the story of the minions, there were like 3 shorts where they explained minions and they originally were clones of gru (crazy af), then changed it with the spin off. Kinda funny to think back about it
"It was accidentally destroyed maliciously" will remain one of my favourite ever movie lines. I enjoyed this movie, but will never forgive it for bringing those goddamn Minions to the world. Thank god people have stopped filling social media with "hilarious" memes of the little feckers.
I’m really glad to see others in the comment section pointing out that Despicable Me 2 isn’t that bad. And to those that bring that up, I have to say THANK YOU! 🙏 I’m getting really fed up with Despicable Me 2 getting thrown into the pile of bad Illumination films when that film actually has as much heart and passion, as well as creativity, put into it as much as the first film. I feel like DM 2 is only hated because of the trend of hating Illumination films sans the first Despicable Me and I’m calling BS on those haters’ stupid mindset.
This is why I hate people looking at new movies and going "it's just a kid's film". Just because it's targeted towards kids doesn't mean you should be sloppy because kids apparently don't know any better. And besides, the best part of growing up is watching a movie as a kid, really liking it, and then coming back to it later in life and finding out it's just as good as you remember it if not better! Recently I rewatched The Incredibles and Wall-E and I noticed so many things I didn't before as a kid, and that's what makes them so freakin' amazing today.
If you ask me, the best movies in the franchise are the original Despicable Me and the Rise of Gru. The Rise of Gru has really grown on me. I honestly think it’s the second best movie in the whole series.
Despicable Me is number one the best movie of the Illumination series. Also, I watched this movie when I was a kid. The minion moments are so funny, and it makes me and people laugh.
Illuminations now has a second billion dollar movie franchise in the Mario movie and probably other Nintendo franchises because of how popular some of them are. But there is a big difference between the Minions and Mario, and that is that Nintendo is in complete control of the movies, they even created their own movie studio to help and control everything. No matter what illuminations does, if nintendo wants to make the next movie better than the original then illuminations is forced to try to make it better, and since nintendo is a game company and game sequels are almost always better than original and nintendo's trauma with the live action mario movie that's probably exactly what they're going to do
1 felt kinda odd but entertaining nonetheless 2 felt more twisted and cornier along with haven't a faster pace 3 felt different, not terrible but a bit stale 4 was surprisingly good, I thought it would be worse, it's not horrible as they say it but it is kinda mid
Alternate title: Illumination's ONLY good film Before they realized how profitable it was to just make the most generic and inoffensive films purely to milk as much revenue as possible, they actually gave a shit with their first film. Gru actually had a proper and compelling story ark. He had to make hard decisions, he had to sacrifice things, and he had to learn from his mistakes. It was truly a really good starting point for a film studio. If they had just kept up that same mentality and actually attempted to improve their writing as they continued to release new films, we could've maybe had another beloved film studio that made films that speak to you on a deeper level. But what we got instead is a studio that just gave into temptation and deployed a golden parachute.

that movie rocks more than muscle man’s mom
Honestly 2 wasn’t too bad Mario was also good-ish and Migration was decent I guess along with Sing 2
fun fact:
there are 2 forms of "you" in german ("du" is casual and "sie" is formal, mainly used for strangers or people of higher authorities like teachers or doctors)
During the entirety of the movie, margo was talking to gru with the formal version of "you" as she saw him more of a caretaker (or atleast something close to that) but nearing the end of the movie where she trusted him more and more she starts using the casual version of "you" with him
The 2nd one had El Macho though
Dazz could you please review the movie Flow? It has no dialogue but the visuals are really good, and the creative way they narrated the story was great. It also had good reviews!
Not sure if this is saying much, but the second movie is the only Illumination movie so far that had 2 Oscar nominations! Other than that if you ask me, I personally like second movie the most as I feel it is the best one in the franchise 🙋🏻♂️
Man, some of these background music choices are great deep cuts. I've been on a bit of a Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness nostalgia trip on TH-cam and didn't expect it to continue in a Despicable Me review. 😆
Great review. I think I can agree with all the points here. Very fun movie. Nothing super heart-wrenching, but enough to feel meaningful and let you connect to all the characters. Love the analysis about the architecture and interior, as well as Nefario being metaphors for Gru.
15:14 it's a wii remote, which just adds so much charm to this bit XD
I still keep seeing some random guy's head in the logo instead of Gru
WTF Do You Mean "only not terrible" 💀💀 The Second One Exists
4:55 - -_-
I should have guessed.
10:45 - -_-
24:20 - Alright, I get it.
The reason why the first movie is good because it was the first Illumination movie and a start of a new animated company.
bros acting like 2 isn’t a masterpiece 😭
I like the second one I think the third one is worse but not horrible and the fourth one is way worse but I still enjoyed it the minions movie exists but rise of gru is actually pretty good
It’s like when a band gets really fucking popular off their first album causing them to try and rush out stuff as fast possible while forgetting to make sure what their putting out sounds good
As a wise crab once said. This movie was before Illumination realized they didn't have to try to make profits.
"This guy just stole a pyramid"

They had changed the story of the minions, there were like 3 shorts where they explained minions and they originally were clones of gru (crazy af), then changed it with the spin off. Kinda funny to think back about it
"It was accidentally destroyed maliciously" will remain one of my favourite ever movie lines. I enjoyed this movie, but will never forgive it for bringing those goddamn Minions to the world. Thank god people have stopped filling social media with "hilarious" memes of the little feckers.
The 1st one is iconic. Aswell as the 2 Spinoffs
I’m really glad to see others in the comment section pointing out that Despicable Me 2 isn’t that bad. And to those that bring that up, I have to say THANK YOU! 🙏
I’m getting really fed up with Despicable Me 2 getting thrown into the pile of bad Illumination films when that film actually has as much heart and passion, as well as creativity, put into it as much as the first film.
5:11 im just vibing to dadbattle here, dont mind me

Despicable Me is number one the best movie of the Illumination series. Also, I watched this movie when I was a kid. The minion moments are so funny, and it makes me and people laugh.
Illuminations now has a second billion dollar movie franchise in the Mario movie and probably other Nintendo franchises because of how popular some of them are.
But there is a big difference between the Minions and Mario, and that is that Nintendo is in complete control of the movies, they even created their own movie studio to help and control everything.
No matter what illuminations does, if nintendo wants to make the next movie better than the original then illuminations is forced to try to make it better, and since nintendo is a game company and game sequels are almost always better than original and nintendo's trauma with the live action mario movie that's probably exactly what they're going to do
Despicable Me 1 is great, but I don’t think the rest are terrible. DM2 and Rise of Gru were pretty decent.
Fun Fact: Half of the People who worked on Despicable Me all use to work for the late Blue Sky Studios
I have never watched a despicable me movie and gone "man this is terrible" they're all just decent watches
Should of called it: Illumination's Only NON-Terrible Movie
Opening the video with the opening title was very very cool.😗👍
1 felt kinda odd but entertaining nonetheless
2 felt more twisted and cornier along with haven't a faster pace
3 felt different, not terrible but a bit stale
4 was surprisingly good, I thought it would be worse, it's not horrible as they say it but it is kinda mid
1 and 2 were fun, 3 and 4 were just bad

I kid you not, me and my siblings just watched this yesterday afternoon.
I'm calling shenanigans. 3 was amazing.
Alternate title: Illumination's ONLY good film
Before they realized how profitable it was to just make the most generic and inoffensive films purely to milk as much revenue as possible, they actually gave a shit with their first film.
No matter what anyone thinks of the first three despicable me movies, I hope we all agree DM4 and the two Minions movies were awful
There’s nothing wrong with the way he’s dressed in the gate scene lmao
