    Awesome video, I’m never thought of Kvothe as a Marty Sue, because he has so many flaws. He seldom has his plans go the way he intends, and only comes out victorious when he is purely reacting.

      Both Mary Sue and flawed. By the end of book two he'd the best at everything, music, magic, swordsmanship, love making. But he's crap at thinking beyond himself, thinking of other peoples motives, being aware the the consequences of his actions.

    I love kvothe. I can't see him as a mary sue. Someone who becomes a thief. A murderer. A pathological liar and manipulator, not because he wants to most the time. but because he has to. Everytime he opens up even the tiniest bit it blows up in his face. Denna is a perfect example of this. She calls him a child. He wants so badly to tell her. To tell someone but he doesn't cause he's afraid of loosing her. Because she may not believe him. Or worse believe that he believes it an think hes crazy. I love kvothe because he is so deep. His inner struggles are what makes him so loveable an easy to connect with. An utterly broken person who is constantly throwing himself into danger for others even though it gets him into more trouble to do it. Like the little girl's he saves from the fake troopers and end up costing him greatly. A big part of the second book was him trying to get Denna's ring back. He almost gets himself killed at the hands of Ambrose. He even threatens Elodin to protect Auri. This is one of the only times him sticking his neck out for someone doesn't go bad. Elodin could have easily taken care of Kvothe and had him removed. But Elodin is in my opinion similar to Kvothe. That they both want to help people especially those who can't help themselves. And I really think this is why Elodin doesn't turn on Kvothe because they both are trying to help Auri. But we have also seen Elodin completely flip things on there side if he chooses. So it may very well come up again later in the 3rd book

    Kvothe is his own worst enemy. He is the architect of his own demise over and over again. His character flaws destroy multiple promising futures for himself, and his blind spots leave him isolated.
    The very same traits that he uses to survive also destroy his dreams.
    It is a kind of inverse portrayal of the famous "with great power comes great responsibility" line.
    He refuses, is too afraid, or doesn't know how to, take responsibility for his actions. He blunders forward confident he can bluff his way through life one step at a time. It often works in the short term, at the expense of the long term.
    I have never had an issue with rude, arrogant, or maudlin characters, as long as they are well written, with reasons for why they are the way they are, and consequences for their actions.
    For that reason, Kvothe never bothered me.

      My biggest problem with the Mary Sue argument is: their use of the definition of success. I actually see this story (so far) as hitting incredibly hard in most societies today; comparing it to your modern day celebrity.
      You could easily look at A List celebrities as Mary Sues. But you would ignore their sacrifice...which I think is a critical error. And by sacrifice, I mean sacrificing something that others would use for their definition of success.
      How much of a Mary Sue could a character be if they are inevitable to a tragic ending (referencing the Cthae Tree cover, which Fae plays use to signal a tragedy theme ).

    I see him as those 1 in 1000 people who are just very gifted. He has plenty of shortcomings that come with having such natural talent.
    As for the name change, when battling forces that can overpower you by knowing your true name this may have been the only way to stop them. So he made a great sacrifice and lost everything that allowed him to be so arrogant. Would be a good conclusion to his character for me.

    • @strictlyfantasy
      @strictlyfantasy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Good points. I recently read a theory that by changing his name, the Cthaeh might not be able to determine Kvothe's future anymore. Interesting to think about.

    • @TheSkiddum
      @TheSkiddum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@strictlyfantasy yeah. Another thing that I heard about was about the chandrian all talking to the Cthaeh. And them changing there names is what made them into the chandrien with there signs. And this would explain why each book begins and end with Kvothe talking about the silence. The 3rd silence witch is his specifically. It would explain why Bast is so afraid of that Silence. So afraid of it cause if anyone noticed it it would mark his master as a chandrien and make everyone want to kill him even more. My theory is there are the 7. He kills 1. Cinder and becomes the 7th when he changes his name. That skin walker specifically says something along the lines of asking weather he was a chandrien. There's really allot to point that kote may very well be one. His lock box may have taken something more than his name. It may have taken something much more important witch will kill him. effectively killing him and ending whatever influence he may have on the world. And if that's the case. He can't be a Mary sue. A man who literally becomes the monsters he is hunting. And kills himself to make sure he cant hurt those he cares about. But at the same time he's being extremely selfish. Because he can't face what hes done. Opening the door to the Fey. And letting the monsters loose on the world. Instead of facing it and stopping it.
      From my understanding this is a prequel of the actual story. My guess is someone fighting the monsters of the fey and closing the door

    I've just discovered these videos and have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the analysis into the characters and story.
    So my take on Kvothe
    I have read a number of reviews where people comment on Kvothe being a Marty Sue and have wondered if they had read the same books as me, and of course he is now Kote, a man who used to be Kvothe, but is he no longer.
    As Kote he constantly brings the readers attention to how he was arrogant and thoughtless as a teenager, but in context you can understand it, he lost his whole world as a young child, reduced to little more than an animal for so long when he rejoins society his moral compass is a bit off.
    But still in his own words He "was proud as a kicked cat"
    Kvothe was a child prodigy coming from a background of theatre and story telling, he enhanced his reputation, wanting people to pay attention to him, he is a little boy craving love and affection, but does not know what to do with it when it is offered, he truly is a tragic character. Proud, lonely, and scared of the (literal) demons from his past, he craves affection but fears telling the truth in case he is mocked. His relationships are short and shallow, but he agonises over Denna not understanding how much he feels for her, but in truth she is also damaged, their interactions are reminiscent of a courtly dance where neither dares be too informal for fear of offending the other.

      He's not even portrayed as perfect.
      His character is deeply flawed. He is arrogant, short-tempered and often woefully misjudges people. Even more, he's not the best in most of his skills. Devi has wiped the floor with him using her Alar and he was beaten up by a little Adem girl time and time again. Despite his time with Feluroan, he is still clueless about women in many aspects of relationships.
      Speaking about relationships, do you remember Denna? Heck, she is Kvothe's greatest weakness, if there ever was one.

    I want to bring something up. Kote
    I don't believe Kote is quite the broken shadow that most people believe him to be.
    First off there is a small passage from the perspective of Graham that Kote, who had been there for a year, had been more lively seeming just a month before. His eyes, very important for Kvothe's temperament, were brighter. That as well as his hair.
    I would assert that Kvothe is waiting for something as Kote. That Kvothe didn't change his name but rather altered it. Temporarily removed important aspects of it. It seems intentional that his name is the same thing but with letters removed. And as you noted Elodin told him how foolish it would be to CHANGE your name. But Kvothe, ever clever, might find another step in between changing and not changing. Make something that is the same, but different, reduced.
    Kote is waiting for something here. In hiding. And in altering his name he limited his access to his music, and other skills, sympathy, swordsmanship, etc.
    Kvothe has made a play. And to complete that play he had to become Kote. But those whom he plays against would note be fooled by a simple act or lie. He needed to make himself truly different. The loss of those things, mostly his music, has worn sorrowfully on him. He continuously becomes more drained of his old vigor. Not all at once as though some cataclysm occurred, but slowly as if sand through an hourglass.
    For example: it MIGHT not be possible to track down Kote using Kvothe's blood if he truly altered or changed his name.
    But that's just my thoughts on it.

    • @jhonnylacksville6765
      @jhonnylacksville6765 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      kote is siaru for destruction? correct me if im wrong but is that not perhaps foretelling that the name in and of itself is that of a crucible? something that is meant to be destroyed? specifically in the act of creating something new? i really like your thoughts here, as an alteration of a name is very different than purely changing it. reminds me of the quote "there is nothing more difficult, than to lie about your own name, its not possible" forgive me if thats a mis quote but i feel it represents what was said. i almost feel as if him waiting to die is kote, and he is merely waiting to become kvothe again. might be what bast meant by remind him of who he was. might actually be hard to take on a new name, or return to an old one. this is something of a mystery that has yet to be explained. not to mention he is adema rue, an actor to the core. the inn is the current stage we are viewing, and the man we knew as kvothe has set it before us. i wouldnt be too surprised if we see a flourish when the action is brought to the waystone!!!! after all he is a thief and a liar. thanks for your comment as it excites me.

    Wouldn’t call Kvothe a “Mary sue”. He’s very gifted at music, but he was raised around it and taught from an early age by great musicians. He learns to fight with the Ademere but say his abilities aren’t much better than a young child by the time he leaves, according to them. His Alar is strong for his age but Devi’s is much stronger. I think Patrick does a great job of making him seem like a gifted young man but also showing many faults and mistakes he’s made along the way. ....Rey from Star Wars, that’s a classic Mary Sue. Lol.

    Even if he describes everything exactly as they went, Kvothe is a faaaaaaaaaar cry from being a Gary Stu. Being good at multiple stuff, doesn't make you flawless. We know from the moment we read the back of the book that he was gonna be a living legend. And he is. He is a prodigy, a Man born once in a billion. But he is a fucking moron too. He fails repeatedly, he is arrogant, overconfident,he is oblivious about the opposite sex and he ends up fucking up his whole life. Being a prodigy might get boring if you have an enemy or two, but when your enemy is the whole fucking world, it get's pretty damn engaging. He has to fight his low status, his poverty, and literal deities that --spoiler alert-- he doesn't win against. He is still low class, and his enemies are alive even after the end of the story. He is not a Gary Stu, he is just overpowered. He is a living legend, that's a prerequisite. A Gary Stu doesn't only refer to the talents of a character, and even if it did, Kvothe is outclassed repeatedly in tons of subjects.

    • @KHH595
      @KHH595 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Same, I'm really not a fan of Denna at all. She wasn't so bad while they were on the trip and killed the Draccus. I started to feel for her character when she's high on resin and actually starts to open up to him a bit but then as soon as he leaves her alone she vanishes and is hanging all over some other man. I'm really hoping she gets better in Wise Man's Fear, which I just started, but I feel like she will only get worse. The saddest part is he's still pining for her years later as Kote the innkeeper.

    • @owayasomething9295
      @owayasomething9295 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@KHH595 I feel like WMF does her more justice as a character. For one, she obviously has a role to play besides simply being a love interest. But the book also both parallels and contrasts her with Kvothe. They both have deep, heavy secrets and they are both searching for answers to those secrets.
      The difference is that Denna doesn't have access to the same kinds of ressources as Kvothe, which I think is what stumps most people since Kvothe virtually has nothing. You say she is 'hanging on some other man' but she is just trying to get by. Denna obviously doesn't have family and she doesn't seem to have friends. She wasn't blessed with a mind of ramstone steel and tutored by an arcanist. She could get a job or marry someone but then she wouldn't be able to travel and find her answers. She could be with Kvothe and they could help each other, but Kvothe is a bit if an emotionally stunted idiot who can barely manage to clothe himself. He can't even begin to explain to her why the hell he might be able to help and she doesn't know she can ask.
      So yeah. Denna is complicated and Kvothe's obsession with her is very melodramatic and angsty. But I think it is to Rothfuss' credit that he has written a complicated female character who doesn't sacrifice her own agency, secrets or ambition simply because she also falls in love.
      /end rant

    • @stevenz9364
      @stevenz9364 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the point, she feels she has to work for some patron to have the life-style she deserves without feeling she totally belongs to a man, and Kvothe knows it and he pretends not to own her, but to slowly approach her, but their relationship will be even more complicated due to Denna's song. I'm still more a Devi's fan, but Denna's got more mystery and the kind of things Kvothe is more likely to be attracted to.

    • @FelineElaj
      @FelineElaj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I belive it's as intended. Denna is not supposed to be a character we love. She is a broken person with her own issues, just like Kvothe, in a sense. Their relationship is supposed to be dysfunctional and tragic. In some ways, Denna is Kvothe's greatest character flaw. I suspect his obsession with her will finally lead to his greatest failure.
      Edit: spelling.

    K I got some of my own Kvothe thoughts. Obviously Meluan Lackless is Kvothes aunt. Somehow in the ruins of Belen Kvothe finds evidence of the Lackless line being older than the line of Modeg. I’ve heard there is gonna be more Modeg in the third book. Somehow Kvothe is gonna end up king sacrifice himself to save his people I think his struggles with poverty his strong attachment to the common folk and his run ins with royalty spiking his wheel repeatedly sets up a perfect character to suddenly discover he is the king PERFECT. Don’t know the details obviously but possibly his mother had this in mind if she knew there is a door of stone on the Lackless estates she mentioned bedding down with a god the father could have been released from behind the doors of stone by Kvothes mom. Could be a melding of Fae royalty with Lackless blood?.. I cannot wait for Rothfuss to not do a George R R Martin on us.

    I am as divided on Covth as I am the chronicles themselves, the narrative itself is compelling and ambitious, the protagonist complex, but maybe a tad too competent, though certainly not a Mary Sue.
    I tend to conclude that the series itself is as spectacularly flawed as Covth himself. Bloated with Ego, yet still somehow enjoyable and relatable.
    I think Covth speaks to our own self-image. We all want to appear competent, and intelligent. We all have our reasonings for why our performance and opinions are superior to all contemporaries.
    I think history will show that book 2 should have spent more time setting up a conclusion and less time being softcore porn, but I hope the author surprises me and somehow tightly and satisfactorily wraps up the story in his third novel.

Most of all he is arrogant which in itself results in more flaws, he's overambitious, hotheaded, quick to overestimate himself, egoistic, can't often interpret a situation right etc. There are ppl in this world who are talented in many things and as long as a character is well written and not boring, why would it be a problem to have such a very talented person as your character? I find Kvothe to be very interesting and one of the reasons is because he is so talented and despite being so talented and intelligent he makes a lot of mistakes and fails.

    I never saw Kvothe as a Mary Sue because he earns everything. He is good at Sympathy? Yeah because he started learning when he was young same with the music. He was trained b the best fighters. Rand Al Thor trained with Lan for a month, maybe two tops, between the end of the first book and the beginning of the second and at the end of book two he defeats a blademaster in single combat without using the power. Nobody ever calls hima Mary Sue... Also Kvothe is deeply flawed being good at a lot of thin s doesn't mean you have no flaws. He is highly skilled but his temper gets him into way too much trouble and excepting maybe living on the streets in Tarbean and his parents dying just about everything bad that happens to him is his fault lol. If he kept his mouth shut at the end of book two instead of mouthing of to The Maer's wife he would have had everything he wanted but no.

    I don't deny that Kvothe is a very deep character, but "Gary Stu" is a very broad description of a character and can describe a villain as well as a hero. In my opinion, a person's opinion of Kvothe and "The King Killer Chronicle" mostly depends on how invested they are while reading. Is the "depth" to the story there to help hide the flaws of a fairly superficial story, written by an inexperience author, or was everything skillfully crafted by a masterful yet inexperienced author? Or is it a mix of both? To me, people see what they want to see and headcanon what they want to headcanon, and they have every right to do so. Stories are personal and depend a lot on personal interpretation, and I think "The Kingkiller Chronicle" relies on this more than most stories.

      Well, because while we can all interpret something like the pronunciation of a name the way that we would like, ultimately there is only one actual way of pronouncing it, and I would imagine the person from who's brain it sprung would be an authority on that pronunciation.
