- So Luck is a movie that exists and John Lasseter is back... Don't know who asked for that but they're going to suffer the consequences!!!

Someone who worked at Skydance Animation said “Lasseter's working style is too controlling, however that he insists on approving minor details and creates a bottleneck in the workflow. He prefers to have scripts read to him and sometimes falls asleep during those readings, only to later criticize the story for plot holes he missed while asleep. He couldn't remember what happened in the last meeting. Things would change on a whim based on what he thought he remembered." So that proves Lasseter did NOTHING to help this movie. If he’s not doing anything at Skydance then they should fire him by now! Something DISNEY refused to do for so long despite knowing what he was doing!
I think it would be interesting to see a film surrounding a character who appears happy-go-lucky and upbeat despite lack of good luck but as the film goes on it's shown more and more that their behavior is really just a cover for their true feelings and does all they can to ignore their problems and mental health, or lack thereof. That would be a decent setup I think.

Actually, John Ratzenberger did make a few uncredited voice cameos in Soul, on top of having an animated character modeled after him, so there's that.

I wish they still did the whole “from the creators of” instead of being specific. I dunno why, that’s just me
I always got the impression from Lasseter's films specifically (the ones he directed/"created") that characterization wasn't his strong suite. If you know the history of Toy Story's production, the characterization of Woody was a difficult road only aided eventually by others' input. Though honestly, at the risk of having the less shared opinion on the topic/ruining people's childhoods, Toy Story always felt like the weaker story-wise of Pixar's films to me... along with Cars, which hey, we also have Lasseter to thank for. Brad Bird and Pete Doctor did way more for that studio's vision and reputation.
Also, if you want a laugh, there is a video out there of Hayao Miyazaki visiting Pixar where Lasseter greets him with a big hug. Miyazaki looks like he's saying "please don't touch me" internally, but is polite all the same. In hindsight it makes me laugh.

I know it has a special place in peoples' hearts for whatever the reason- I say this as someone who loves Brave Little Toaster (Lasseter worked on that pre-Pixar), it didn't have the same oompf to me.

Bojack Horseman did a brilliant fuck "John Lassetter and the people rehiring him" story without outright naming them, was a great pay-off to the 'Henry Fondle' sub-plot that was both hilarious and biting with harsh satire. this was great vid btw
And on top of that, The Smiling Friends episode Mr. Frog was a great commentary on that sort of thing as well.
Such a shame really. Mostly it’s insulting cuz John didn’t really help behind the scenes. Falling sleep at meetings to flat out not showing up and then changing everything without hearing the full story.
At this point, John should probably just retire. I get the impression he only sticks around as a desperate attempt to reclaim his reputation.
It's his own fault his reputation's in a shambles, ego's partly to blame, also.

Unlucky people who didn't miss the bus, got on the bus, had the bus crash and were permanently maimed for life which resulted in their job replacing them, their spouse leaving them, their friends abandoning them and them ending up in poverty begging for change and addicted to drugs to stave off the pain: "AM I A JOKE TO YOU"
I think that her positive nature could have worked IF it was just a front. Where there is a down side where we see her exhausted by scrambling to keep herself in school, upset at losing her countless jobs and angry at being alone. Have there be moments where you see her positive nature slipping now that she doesn't have to put on a brave face for her little sister figure. Only for the brief moment where we see her give up in the beginning to once again put on that façade to cheer up the little girl. Hell even lying to her so she doesn't worry. That her life is going good but it is a lie she is losing everything behind the scenes.
Only in the end for her to realize it is gonna be okay. Being lucky or unlucky isn't what matters is how you get up and move forwards from it. Or some crap like that. That and the ending was sweet but come on Let the friggin girl get adopted by the dragon. And get a job at the unlucky tikki shack and the Leprechauns help her with school. THAT would have been super cute unconventional family ending.
Well, this company’s just assassinated themselves. And that’s just for having Lasseter.
Honestly, I’d probably not even give this movie a thought if I didn’t think “Hey, that cat is voiced by Gobber” when seeing trailers while waiting for Prehistoric Planet episodes

5:39 Yeah. The movie has a good premise. But, the end result feels off.
The main character with a bad luck are usually with something like gothic, punk rock, combative or biker like attire to match their rough life. Plus, the attire of clothing will give the character cynical and moody attitude towards life. But, deep down. The protagonist wants a something good to go their way without doing anything bad to get it.
The Bad Guys animated series did this kinda of premise better than this movie.
The Megamind movie did the character with terrible luck thing better. Tighten becoming a villain and Megamind correcting his mistakes to unintentionally being a hero.
Last note, Sisu looks more Chinese Dragon than the luck dragon. Sisu has a excellent color scheme.
The Luck Dragon color scheme seems like a common color for a "good dragon."
9:13 What? Wouldn't make more sense a particular fictional creature in mythology wanting good luck for himself or herself because they had it worst than the protagonist? Or chaotic mythology creature associated with bad luck wants revenge for having bad luck throughout their life?
Or this is a last minute idea the dragon boss being a tragic character theme again?

I'm going to feel bad for the people who ACTUALLY worked on this.
It's because of John Lasseter.
Well, people don't like Joy's character because of how selfish and bossy she was from the beginning of Inside Out. Well, we know that a main character must need flaws to be interesting and have the audience connect with them. And then they would eventually overcome their flaws as they develop. It's how it works. Also, if Sam was a bitch at first, you or the audience wouldn't like her at all. It's funny when a main character has flaws that makes them fleshed out and yet the audience already dislikes them. Guess when writing a story where the character's flaws are part of their development, it just gets the reaction out of audience. And this movie is just unlucky. 👎🏼
I don't think they should make Sam obnoxiously arrogant for no reason but maybe make her more pessimistic and angsty about how her life is terrible. Maybe make her act a little cold toward others because she's been bullied and treated like shit from so many people that she now finds it hard to trust others. Of course this is a movie for small children so maybe that's why they wanted to make her a cinnamon roll.

Since Luck's on Apple TV+, there is another movie on there I'd recommend by a more obscure studio called Cartoon Saloon: Wolfwalkers! Gorgeous animation, charming characters, a wonderful message, and NO TIES TO JOHN LASSETTER WHATSOEVER :D

If they were anything, and I mean anything at all worth even disliking him for, Skydance wouldn’t have touched him with a barge pole, and he wouldn’t be luring all the greats to his new studio. He’s signed Brad Bird, Linda Woolverton, Vicky Jensen, Nathan Greno and Alan Menken, for God’s sake. They didn’t sign on unknowingly, they signed on *because* of him. And just think, even when #MeToo was at it’s peak, there wasn’t a single criminal case bought against him and he was publicly and vocally hired into his new job almost immediately.

Skydance Animation should’ve been a safe haven for BlueSky animators who got fired right after Disney closed down their animation studio, not John Lasseter’s retirement plan.
Honestly I think the most insulting thing about my Linkedin profile is that somebody from Skydance Animation looked at it.
It would have been way better if Penny had gotten increasingly annoyed by her lack of good luck.
It is rather hard to believe that John Lasseter was one of the people who would found one of the greatest animated film studios to date. I guess it shows that some people who achieve positive things will also have a dark side as well. Good review by the way.

I watched this movie looking forward to see what a new animation studio had to offer with no knowledge that John Lasseter was involved. I was out of the movie news loop for awhile and actually had no idea. When I watched the movie I actually did like Sam's character and thought we needed more to develop the character before dropping her into the land of luck and when we were in the land of luck I thought the story was an excuse to show how it all works. Admittedly I enjoyed this movie I can't pin point exactly why but knowing all of it's problems might make me have second thoughts on it and maybe just being better than an illumination movie made me like it or something. Also I did use my free week trial so maybe it being free made me overlook all the bad aspects. Overall I enjoyed the movie thought it had a good twist with Bob and I hope Skydance can get up after this a make a better film. Competition inspires greatness and I want to see more animation studios rise to make everyone animation try a little harder to make great films.
It sounds to me like you enjoyed the movie and are now *deciding* you need to dislike it because of this TH-cam video and the general online consensus. Best to let yourself enjoy something.

It's not necessary, but if you want to you can. There's a few characters from the series that are in the movie, but they're not around long enough to get to know. The movie is amazing, I watched it the first time while eating pizza.

Honestly, this plot would work better if it was a depressed salary man who basically forgot how to be positive who was the protagonist, at least the lesson would stick better then. This character seems more like the one who would try to get him to look at the good side of things in the beginning, only for the roles to reverse in the end and he reminds her of the good in life, everything she herself tried to teach him in the beginning.
It's sad because John Lasseter was one of my favorite heroes. But because of what he did, I don't really care much about him. As for the movie Luck, it's not BAD at all but it's not GOOD either. It's just MEH.
They should have Sam to be actually very luck but she’s a bit careless and clumsy. But only thinks about all the bad stuff that happens to her.
I have high hopes for this movie but when HE show up everything falls downhill very fast. 😔

Outside of the great animation, I gotta agree that this movie wasn’t all that good. I certainly don’t hate it as much as some other people do since I’m a bit more forgiving, but overall, it’s a painfully mediocre, by-the-numbers coming-of-age flick with terrible writing and worldbuilding. Also, fuck John Misconduct. All my homies hate John Misconduct.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie is one of my favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films.
Edit: As for Luck itself, the story and characters were bland, and the animation was boring to look at it - not to mention a Disney/Pixar clone. Also, that flirting between the unicorn and the "dragon" was the cheesiest character interaction I've seen in a film.
Cars and Toy Story are 2 of my favorite movies of all time. But this, why John? Whhyyyyy?

Unproven. It's difficult to figure out, but from the sounds of it, he liked to hug women. Disney didn't immediately drop him like they have other actors who get accusations but rather allowed him to conclude his business and move on.

It felt really weird her designs trying borrow element design from Falcor from Neverending Story while Sisu designs still being a western anime asian dragon. The fur body on the character is beautiful. But, it must been a hassle to make sure it didn't look off or keeping it "realistic" when the fur is moving or soak. They should've went all out on a scaly body and fin like manes for a water dragon.
Her designs is actually good. But, it feels like Sisu came from a readaptation film of the Last Unicorn or My Little Pony than her own film.
Also, the Elsa-ified is freaking hilarious and correct what you said there. Too bad they making it were is both cool and cute at same like Toothless the Night Fury, being a fearsome and having adorable moments when expressing emotions.
