  • It can be a real struggle to get out of bed in the mornings when it is sub-zero temperatures.
    This Mitsubishi Triton feels the same way. For some time now, the customer has complained that the Mitsi just doesn’t want to start when it is cold. In fact, he has even had to jump start it on a number of occasions to get it going!
    What’s the problem? Follow along and see....

    Good job, Mark. That engine must have pretty good compression to start with only one good glow plug. But I don't have much experience with diesels I didn't know that it got that cold in Australia.

      It was minus 10 degrees C last year and in the summer we had plus 40 degrees C. So it is a great testing ground for faulty glow plugs. :)

      Hi Max, I’m having the same problem with my Triton, I have recently brought it to the dealership to get fixed three times now. They have changed the fuel filter, the glow plugs and gasket manifold on the right. They said it’s okay for it to take around 5 cranks to start on the first go in the morning when it’s cold. This doesn’t seem right to me. When the car is hot it’s fine it starts straight away. Any advice would help. Thanks.

      Hey Pascal Teles,
      I would start with the basics. That would include the battery and starter. Here are a few videos where I have had similar issues. There are quite a few Triton videos on the channel, so feel free to check them out.

      A few questions:
      Is the glow plug system working correctly? Has it been tested or just had the glow plugs replaced?
      Are there any fault codes?
      Has a full diagnostic scan of all modules been carried out?
      Has a full test of the battery, starter & alternator been carried out?
      How old is the battery?
      Are there any voltage drops from the battery to the starter motor?
      Does it blow smoke when it starts up when cold?
      How many kilometres has the engine done?
      Hopefully you can get to the bottom of this

      @@MiracleMAX thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The dealership said the did all testing and I paid for a full diagnostic scan. It does blow white smoke and the it goes away. The battery was only just replaced and they didn’t mention testing the starter or the alternator but they said think nothing is wrong with the car but I don’t agree. The car has done 160k and has full service history all done at the dealership. I have watched all of your videos it’s really helpful.

    Hi max. The same problem on my Triton hard start and can't rev above 3000 rpm. What do you think causes this?

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey value guard,
      There are many reasons why you could be having hard starting issues, including faulty glow plugs, starter issues, weak battery, incorrect compression, leaky injectors and the list goes on.
      Do you have access to a scan tool so you can provide me with some data?
      If it won't rev above 3000 RPM, this could indicate a blocked exhaust, EGR issues, blocked DPF or a faulty MAF sensor or a turbo problem.
      I hope that gives you some direction to diagnose your vehicle correctly.

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Carlos
      The battery tester is an Autool BT-360. Just search that for the one I use. There are later models, but more expensive. I like the fact that you can do a battery test, starter test and alternator test, all with the same tool. At the college where I teach, we have a much more expensive one, but as far as I am concerned, harder to use and not as efficient. I have had this one for about 2 years and never had any trouble with it.

      @@MiracleMAX Thank you! Question, My triton glow plugs were just replaced by japan compatible ones, when starting at the morning a short bunch of white smoke its observed, any idea what could cause this?

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@porrascarlos80 Hey Carlos,
      Usually white smoke indicates unburnt fuel. One other thing to consider is coolant in the combustion process? Is it losing any coolant?
      With the white smoke, several things need to be checked. Even though the glow plugs were replaced, is the ECU operating the plugs correctly? Is the turbo operating correctly? Are the intercooler and hoses airtight? Are there any vacuum leaks in the intake system? Is the EGR valve working within specs? Does the EGR valve have a blanking plate fitted?
      How many Kms has this vehicle done?
      Are the cylinder compressions within specs?
      Is there a build-up of carbon in the intake system?
      That might be a few things to consider.
      Thanks for your comments
