City Living In A Pop Top Camper

  • This little pop-top camper might not look like much from the outside, but for 22 year old Lily Kemp it's home. For her it means freedom and provides an escape from the rent trap.
With prices in Auckland City (New Zealand) going through the roof Lily spent just $1500 to buy and do up an old pop-top camper that she now lives in for a fraction of her previous rent. Best of all, she still gets to enjoy all the benefits of central city living.
She now has a space that she can truly call her own, decorate however she likes and even take away with her on holiday or if she moves.

Lily is awesome. She's not just surviving, she's living. I admire her. She's a brave 22 year old that wasn't afraid to take a chance. She did something a lot of people only talk about and she made it work. Smart, brave, and beautiful. I wish her the best. Thanks for the video.

Isn't that wonderful! I remember so well how much I struggled just to pay rent when I lived in a big expensive city - it caused so much stress and heartache throughout my younger years... but seeing these kids today who seek out alternatives to maintain their sovereignty is such an inspiration. I mean, really, who needs all that damn space?! Especially when you're just throwing away good money, money that you worked so hard for but then have to just toss it away, never having anything to show for it. No, these kids are great and they're paving the way for everyone's freedom. And, is it really that much of a sacrifice? Nope... it's the opposite... a gift... direct access to nature, simplicity and freedom! Love this!!!

goodwin1996 I hear you Goodwin. I recently bought an old - REALLY old RV that my parents have owned since 1982. They remodeled it 15 years ago and it's still in really good shape so I'm moving into it for the summer to see how it goes. People that live in campers and tiny houses LOVE living small and simply and closer to nature. So, why not, right? You can save so much money going that route... plus, it'll be yours. And nobody can take it away from you! Sometimes you can get great deals on craigslist. So, best of luck to you... I hope you find what you need.

Lily has done a fantastic job with the caravan. In the UK older caravans are often associated with damp, cramped conditions. Her home looks very cozy and she clearly has an eye for interior design in a more vintage, shabby-chic style.

I'm 70 and travelled for 7 years in a campervan it is the most amazing life. I had a 65 watt solar panel on the roof with 150amp deep cyle battery. I ran my refridgerator, TV for two hours a night in winter, a radio, computer, fan and phone charger and never ever ran out of power. At first I had a camp toilet but that is a nightware to clean out every week. Then I got a bag toilet they are the best. You put a bag in the toilet and throw away each day into a garbage bin. Don't be shocked women put soiled nappies in bins all the time and some don't tie them into a plastic bio degradable bag. I sat my solar shower on the dash board and either took it into a shower cubicle at the beach or into my tent shower room for my daily showers. I do not like to have gas inside my van. no matter how careful you are in my travels most fires and exposions are from gas. I have seen hundred of gas fires and fires from candles. In Australia there are free campsite along all highways.

People think they NEED all this extra space and worthless crap that none of us actually really NEED at all..... And you quickly realize this once you get away from it for just a bit!! As a young fella, I couldn't conceive of EVER being without a smartphone..... Then, I went without any type of cell phone at all for several months and guess what?? I did NOT miss it very much for very long!!! Humans have existed for countless thousands of years WITHOUT all these stupid gadgets.... They're fun gadgets and I like them but that's all they are and they're NOT necessary to a happy life!! In fact, they can be an obstacle to a truly happy life!!

Seeing how well she seems to be doing in her cute little caravan is really inspiring, especially as someone who wants to build a tiny house to live in. My pop up will eventually serve as a summer home in the campground I'm parked in, so seeing this really helps.

The BIGGEST question that was totally left unanswered is WHERE IS HER BATHROOM AND WHERE DOES SHE SHOWER?!!! You cannot show an example of pop-top camper living and leave out this information - it would have been nice to have been given this info as well.

Alot of campers, caravans, and tents use porto potties, you just have to empty them yourself.
Showers are easily done with solar camp showers or heated water in a bucket.
It's really not a big deal.

My neighbor hood is scary, there literally are homeless people walking the street every day. This is nice for her, but I could not do it. The price is worth having a safe environment where I do not have to worry about being killed.

+OusaKhun At least 3 people and a police officer have died on my street since 2009, I fully disagree with you about this one, there are always homeless people breaking into peoples homes and living there while they are away for extended periods of time. I bought 6 acres of land in a forest and I only have an occasional deer to worry about.

SUCH a beautiful camper! I love her whole interior decorating style! And the minimalist lifestyle seems so frugal. It would definitely be the perfect living setup for a young person who likes to spend a lot of time outside so you're not so cooped up all the time, but then you have a nice cozy space to return to for some alone time, or some friend time, or just some light reading. I really admire this girl and what she's achieved - score one for creativity!

I'm not sure why there is almost a stigmatization against small homes in western countries now. Early homesteaders in Canada lived in small cabins and were fine. Why are people being forced to live in a big house and pay a mortgage for 30 years.

To be trapped in a money system that profits only the already wealthy. Mostly. Banks love to have us enslaved to them. And in many towns it's illegal to live in a tiny house under a certain amount of square feet because then they cannot demand property taxes. In many places you cannot have a composting toilet they require you to have a flushing toilet so you need to be hooked on the town water and waste system. So many rules to take away people's freedom.

As someone who has lived in studios for years now, I can tell you that not even a few months into living in studios, i wished to have another room to be in. Advertising gigantic mansions where you could lodge fifty people as a lifetime objective is definitely a sign of material excess which serve absolutely no purpose, but while I enjoy watching those tiny house videos, I've had enough experience in small living to tell you it's not something I'd ever wish for long term. Human beings can't just be cooped up in a single room which contains everything all the time, it weighs on you in the end. The minimum should always be to have at least two rooms, I would recommend a living area and then a sleeping area with rooms that have decent proportions not to feel like the space is bearing down on you and trigger that feeling of claustrophobia. Having to pay mortgage for 30 years is certainly insane, however, and I think people should be able to afford homes that suit their needs, no matter the size.

  • @WizzRacing
    @WizzRacing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +26

The definition of insanity is doing something over and over and hoping for different results. As well as sending every dime you earn to someone else. Just to have a roof over your head for nothing in return!
She is the sane one. In a world of broke people that live day to day on credit!

It's is a great camper she has but when I watch these tiny house videos I sort of feel like is an "elephant in the room" situation, the fact that we're now showing off our sheds and tents because housing is so unaffordable, this lady should be able to live in a proper house or apartment in her own country. I take my hat off to her for making the very best of the situation however the fact she is living there and some other person down the road will have more space and money than they could ever use tells me something about our system is not working.

I LOVE it! She is very creative, artistic and has great decorative talent! This is definitely one of my favorites because of the simplicity of the pop up style caravan and what she was able to do with it and with style! I took this as a huge inspiration and went out and bought myself a 400 dollar pop-up and am now in the process of securing it (fixing a few things and finding new cabinets, etc) picking things up for it here and there in a decorative sense, getting it properly "hooked up" with water, propane, fridge, toilet/shower box (some models come with it), mine will be more DIY with compost toilet though, solar panels, generator/converter, water catchment, mini split, etc. A little at a time of course, it won't be done over night and I know this but now I know that it it WILL be done! :) I absolutely love what she did with hers and am hoping to do similar to mine. Thank you SO very much for all the inspiration your show has giving me and so many others, thank you for sharing these master pieces with us and thank you to all of the tiny house builders out there for not being afraid to "step outside of the box!" You are all truly beautiful souls. I'm going to name mine "Tardis" because she is definitely bigger on the inside!
