Genius Prince - Good anime, bad title

  • Since Realist Hero decided to throw away all logic and sense just within the first couple episodes in favour of mindnumbing fanservice, here is The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt to fill the anime nation management void. Not only does it do the nation ruling elements some justice, but it's keeps its light hearted tone all the way through. I only wish some sense went into its title which isn't a guide and I keep repeatedly reading it as raising a KINGDOM out of debt. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the review.

    The reason why anime/manga/light novel titles are getting so long is because people started getting too lazy to read the description on the back of the book, so they started putting the description as a title to catch more eyes when sitting on a display shelf

      I heard a theory is that most LNs originate from WN authors rewriting their works. For WN authors who are competing for eyes on their works, they use long, elaborate, basically-synopsis titles as a clickbait. And since everyone there is doing it, everyone follows it. The title gets inherited to the LN and then the anime from there

    Realist hero was so very disappointing, and that's keeping in mind my already low expectations due to it being an isekai. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I honestly held off from watching Genius Prince because it just sounded way too similar when someone first described it to me, and I'm glad I watched it now. It was a way better experience, and actually enjoyable!
    Realist hero doesn't even have a good reason to be an isekai in the first place, since most of the knowledge they brought with them was just proverbs that the protagonist happened to have encyclopedic knowledge of.
    Anyways, great video, thanks for reminding me that this anime exists

      Thing is, I liked the analytical way the mc in realist approached problems and that he wasn’t a super OP magical warrior. But I also feel that things went _way_ too smoothly for him, like there wasn’t a whole lot of challenge.
      But the way things happen makes sense, I mean if that MC has his encyclopedic knowledge, he would be able to use it to solve problems.

      @@kmmediafactory The problem arises from the fact that the world makes little sense in Realist Hero and the solutions that Soama provides make just as little sense. Take one of the first problems, the food shortage in that we're told the kingdom was starving or facing severe food shortages. However, we're not shown anyone starving and inconsistently we were shown fishermen throwing away food (the squids they caught) because they didn't look appealing. Then the solution Soama provides is to show certain foods are actually edible without supplying said food to the populous, I guess they're just expected to hunt these uncommon food sources (that's without the problem of showing his inner circle scoffing down food while the people starve).
      If you enjoyed Realist Hero, I'm not going to criticise you for it. I enjoy Rwby despite it being incredibly poorly written on every level. Everyone's allowed to enjoy anything and I wont berate anyone for enjoying Realist Hero.

      @kmmediafactory 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dlfarmer7601 Yes, I see what you mean. Actually, I have to confess, when I first saw it, I was a bit puzzled by his solution. It made some sense, but it was debatable on whether it could be practically applied to the entire kingdom. Plus, I think there are some very convenient things, like a species which can see microbes? Eh, that threw me off.
      I did enjoy it, and I appreciate you for the discussion, but there were definitely some poor points.

    Thanks for shining a light on this series (and thanks for calling out Realist Hero, a show which goes 'full isekai' about five times over in its first season). It's good, though not perfect
    Pros:
    -Wein and Ninym are excellent main characters. Ninym is the perfect foil to keep Wein in check and keep him sympathetic even as he delights in causing problems
    -The show keeps a reasonable cast size of well-developed characters rather than overloading you with generic waifus
    -Things don't always go Wein's way. It's so nice to see an isekai protagonist (I know it's not isekai but it's clearly designed to appeal to the isekai market) who can't just solve every problem in front of him with his crazy powers
    -They bring up some interesting ideas about the nature of power and Wein's personal philosophies. Remains to be seen whether they do interesting things with this or whether it's just window dressing
    Cons:
    -While not the full generic isekai world (protagonist is from the world, no demi-humans and no significant magic that I remember), it's still got a lot of that going on
    -Lots of big problems tend to be resolved quickly and conveniently, which can make things feel unsatisfying or like deus ex machina. While Wein's diplomacy often backfires, his battle plans always seem to work perfectly.
    -In standard isekai fashion, the story meanders from arc to arc without a clear idea of where it's all going.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I would agree with most of the pros, though I would add that most of the comedy is well done and that I don't quite remember Genius Prince going into Wien's personal philosophies beyond that one speech he made with Zeno. As for the cons you mentioned, I think the world is just a generic medieval world as there's nothing that stands out at all (which might be more damning). I guess that makes it easier for the anime to explore, which admittedly they do quite well. I agree with the other two cons, though the satisfaction the viewer can get at the end of an arc would be diminished if he fails in battle. Could have solved this if they had a battle mid arc in which Wien fails.

    • @pfeilspitze
      @pfeilspitze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Meandering between arcs is more a light novel disease than an isekai disease, really. Every 3-4 episodes is usually a new novel, usually with no planned end for the series in sight.

    • @VivioSaf
      @VivioSaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't actually have a problem with any of your opinions. Just one thing on your arguments that struck a nerve with me ...
      "Demi-human", "Magic", "God/Goddess blessing", "Hero" and "Demon Lord", those are fantasy elements, not necessarily "Isekai". It just so happen that Post-SAO "isekai" are too lazy to use any other setting.
      (I'd also say that "RPG stats window", although came to be with "video game Isekai", are perfectly usable in non-isekai stories, thus, aren't necessarily a isekai element)
      Note: Not really a problem with your arguments. I'm just too annoyed with people equating Fantasy with Isekai. And also with the authors, who think putting "hero summoning" and "another world reincarnation" is everything needed to have a "Isekai Story".

    Many anime these days do have long titles and I can think of good, mediocre and bad ones.
    I found "What do You do in the End of the World... Bla bla bla" to have a compelling story but I can't even remember the title.
    "I've been killing Slimes Past 300 years... Something" is not bad, not good but it's fun to watch.
    The problem is how can I recommend good anime or warn people of bad ones if I don't even remember the damn TITLE! Maybe they should make a memorable Title and then put a subtitle, ex. Re:Zero - Starting life from another World Commonly known as *Re:Zero*.
    WHY CAN'T THEY DO THAT?

      @pallingtontheshrike6374 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      because that's not how you get views on the web novel sites i _guess_ (???????)
      maybe it's because the sites don't have good adv search functions [tag search, tag exclusion, etc] or something, though i could swear syosetu had tags...
      the shortening of konosuba is a fan thing iirc, as is MuTen [mushoku tensei] and the various names for isekai'd slime [tensura/slimesekai/slime isekai]
      korean names and slightly-more-self-respecting chinese ones tend to be better about this. [and garbage chinese ones occasionally have short title anyways just to piss you off when using that rule of thumb XP]
      for japanese stuff i find that # of phrases/clauses in (main) title is inversely proportional to maximum quality

    Regarding the 30,000 people thing, it is definitely rushed, yeah - but in the source material I recall it going into far greater detail with how exactly Falanya (With Wein, Lowellmina) leveraged the citizens assembly to act in defense of the city; it was written more as if a quasi-militia was organized, while also heavily betting on the somewhat rational decision that any army that decided to attack or impede the flow of refugees would force the others to unite in retaliation - at which point, the army attacking or attempting to stop the civilians would be out of position. It was a bit awkward, and maybe I'm pulling some mental gymnastics here to make it work in my mind, but I don't feel like that part was in any serious way stupid.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem is how to convince an entire population to go along with this plan. Even though it's via their own governing assembly, how do they tell their citizens to march out of defensive walls towards several armies that want to attack. From the citizens perspective, they'll be abandoning their homes to march out to their doom all because a foreign little girl said so. It's certainly possible that it was better handled in the source material, however, the anime must stand up by itself and the way it's presented makes is poorly written. I absolutely like Genius Prince but it isn't flawless.

    I like how half the examples (fire force and my hero Academia) weren't even the fan service you despise. Fire force.... yeah, her "lucky" letcher power is basically a joke of that stereotype and is part of her character mainly being emotional distant from co-workers and self deprecating because her "power" makes any interaction with men into a hassle at best. As for the My hero Academia, that scene in particular was just Mineta being pervy only to have his expectations utterly destroyed when the girls showed up in almost full body swimsuits thus subverting (and deservedly so) his plan.
    Though the other two, you got a point there.

    • @Zarastro54

      The fan service having a flimsy in universe explanation still makes it fan service dude. The lucky letcher thing is just an excuse to get her naked in every scene that she’s in to the point where she’s an active hindrance in combat. MHA is full of fan service even outside that example, but the fantasy of a character is still fan service because we can see and “ogle” at the fantasy.

      that being said, In the last few episodes we learned that he has a lot of raw strengh but lacks technique and expierence, wich is a nice twist on the whole overpowered MC thing to get him a bit more grounded again.
      It also feels like its an isekai just for the sake of being an isekai, you could cut the isekai part away and just let him start with no memory of his past and nothing would change, the isekai theme plays no role in the plot or his character.
      Also i highly suspect it started as a fan fic of Overlord with the idea of “what if he was good all the time, like his hero alter ego momonga?“ and i dont know how to feel about that >.

    You have great ideas and ways of presenting them. I suspect you will grow to be quite a large anime TH-camr if you can fix some of your production problems.
    To start, your audio problem is the biggest one. Your microphone is not the greatest, being very muddy, especially in low frequencies. And since your voice is very deep, the microphone makes it very hard to understand what you are saying. Add on the idea that there is a large American population that is interested in anime, having any sort of shortcomings in the audio department will make it that much harder to understand you (accents aren't hard to understand once one has gotten used to them, but not all Americans are used to a British accent).
    The background music in this video is very loosely defined as background music. It is too loud in the video. Also, the background visual seemed odd, feeling like a Windows Vista background.
    I am not very well versed many other areas regarding TH-cam production and making good videos, but I can tell that you do have the most important part, interesting content. Now you just need to develop the other parts of your TH-cam game and I suspect you'll find the growth you probably desire. In regards to this video, I really like what you've said about Genius Prince. I very much enjoy these kingdom builder-type shows like Dr. Stone or Maoyu (even though Maoyu was meh) and watching another like that would be fun!

      Thanks for the feedback, I really do appreciate it in all my work (really helps my craft). The microphone is definetly the main problem. I've ordered some soundproofing which should help a little but I'll see what I can do about the mic itself (actually bought a new one on Ebay but I don't think it's even better than the webcam mic I was using). I tend to rush what I say when reading my scripts so I'll work on that too. I'll sort out the background music for future videos as well, probably is too loud. As for the background visual, I'll stick to it for now until I can sort out the other issues and once I find an appropiate animation that wouldn't be too distracting.
      I'm very glad you enjoyed the video and especially the points I raised.

    Maybe i should give it ago again, but the first two episodes bored me so much, all it showed was a guy that is good at everything he touches and the parts that would have added some tension were either left out or cut down, it gave the vibe that it is another anime that doesnt understand pacing and wants to run as quickly through the plot as possible.
    The world also felt really shallow (and dear good was the world map ugly, not part of my Judgment, but i need to say it).
    Realist hero was ok for me because i very much expected a kinda slice of life-ish focusud thing from the art design and did get exactly what i expected while genius prince gave me alderarmin on the sky vibes (the whole lazy genius thing) and is not at all able to pull up to that expectation wich maybe was a reason i dropped it so quickly.

      It definitely didn't have grand stakes or tension, as in I didn’t expect any of the good guys to get killed or them to horribly lose. Still the light hearted tone was consistent and almost all the strategies were well done.
      A few other smart anime that delve into economics/politics:
      Spice and wolf (combing economics and romance, and surprisingly making it work). Apothecary Diaries (shows incredible nuance and differing relationships between the factions of the Chinese inner palace).
      Alderamin on the Sky (one of my favourite anime with incredible intelligence put into the battles. Alas it only has one season and wont ever get another).
      High school prodigies might be the only other anime that invented the light bulb in an other world (as well as all other modern inventions including anti air missiles, power stations, cars and basically anything else). Unlike Dr stone however, High school prodigies is a horribly made show in every level of the word while disregarding every possible meaning that could make it any good. "what the hell is with the series that have entire sentences as a title"? This will be an intense over-simplification of the trend but to make it as short as possible,
    This is a marketing thing, that only happens in light novels. It happened because of a couple unrelated reasons all piling up at once:
    - companies learned that longer titles sold more books, because of some bad statistical analysis, so their poorly thought out solution was to stuff as many words as possible into a title. This began as a bad corporate decision, but before long the actual writers got into it too, and started competing for the most cumbersome and ridiculous title they could, full well knowing how stupid it was.
    - Light Novels were becoming so incredibly similar to one another that they increasingly had to spell out their gimmick in the title just to get people to pick up the damn thing, let alone actually read it. This led to sentence-length titles becoming the norm, if only by sheer necessity.
    - The fans found those titles kinda funny... You know, back before the market was saturated with them.
    - Now that the market is saturated with sentence length titles, it's become kinda hard to sell a light novel with, you know, a normal title, since it's now suddenly outside the norm.
    And you know, a load of other factors. It was one of those "perfect storm" things, where something really stupid came into being purely because of the timing of it all. And now we're kinda stuck with it, since it's here.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    While I like Genius Prince, it definitely has its problems. For example, Wien is a textbook example of probably my least favorite MC trope ever: Uber Talented but Lazy. Dude is some kinda prodigy, as the name suggests, but all he wants to do is fuck around. His entire goal is literally to get rid of the kingdom so he can fuck around more. And this is contrasted by his assistant Ninym, who reached her position through hard work and diligence.
    Then there's the romance. Despite the general plot being about Wien ending up in a political marriage, this anime is not a harem, and he doesn't really like any of the possible princesses he can marry. Instead, he is pretty clearly in love with Ninym and she is also in love with him. BUT, marrying her would cause a lot of problems, namely that she comes from a "lower class" race and it wouldn't benefit the kingdom in any way. In fact, he and Ninym's goals are the opposite. He wants to ditch the kingdom, she wants to help it as much as possible. So much so, that when Wien's sister makes a comment about them liking each other, Ninym literally says she will kill herself if Wien marries her, despite it being what both of them want. So now we have this pointless angst between the two characters and it doesn't add anything to the story because it's based entirely on flaws of the two characters. Ninym won't agree because she's too hardheaded about what's good for the kingdom. Wien won't agree because he's too lazy to step up and make it work without a political marriage.

    • @VivioSaf
      @VivioSaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may be taking too many assumptions to reach this conclusion, but ...
      To me, it looked like that scene implied that, the reason they got together in the first place, was related to whatever is her objective (I assume he promised to do something about the situation of her people), and him abandoning his standing to marry her, would mean he given up on that.
      Also ... his "I wan't to ditch this country" talk, feels like that trope where the nonsense the mc talks now and then actually has a deeper meaning from their past.

    • @Zarastro54
      @Zarastro54 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    By the way, Realist Hero doesn't condone slavery. To say slaves, er, existing therefore means a series condones slavery is kind of an objectively bad take. It's like saying Attack on Titan is an inherently fascist work because... Some characters, mostly bad guys, happen to be fascist. You know, in spite of the text explicitly defining this ideology as bad, even when believed in by a supporting hero.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But in Realist Hero, Soama not only allows slavery in his kingdom but makes it far more profitable, even going out of his way to make slave owners public servants. He is the king, he has total control over his kingdom and can tell everyone not to own slaves anymore. In the same season he brutally murdered a dozen officials for being yes men so he has extraordinary powers and no rival force that can change them. He already has the support of a couple duchies and many other nobles so he has the power plus he won the kingdom's own civil war in the first season so his rule is now completely undisputed. He can end slavery in a heartbeat without any danger of resistance
      Also the slaves would be picking cotton as we learned in the first episode, that crop is the kingdom's main export so there's that. Only a handful of slaves will be educated and thanks to Soama more people will be brought into slavery as it's suddenly become very profitable.
      By making the slave owners public servants gives them authority and will make it really difficult for Soama to speak out against them in the future.
      I suspect this was added just to make Soama look good and possibly add another type of fanservice to the mix without actually considering the ramifications of it.

    • @Zarastro54
      @Zarastro54 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d say it’s not as bad as Shield Hero, which actually has written into it magical mechanics that make slavery beneficial and desirable to have even more than emancipating (xp sharing) and now up to *three* cute girls willingly becoming his slave in whole or in part for that very reason.
