Although cool, I feel the 60fps AI smoothing here kind of ruins it. Here we have uneven frames, blurryness, stutters introduced by the algorythm. It's a bad idea to try and make up frames where they don't exist and I hate seeing this effect on modern TVs
I was just about to comment the same thing. But thankfully that won't be needed x) But that blurryness is the biggest problem for me. But it might be because that AI smoothing. Or those frames what you were talking about. But I think someone will get this 60FPS version right very soon. And Upscaling old videos is almost never a good idea. Specially when it make far away objects and faces hard to see when all the details concentrate on 1 messy spot. But I didn't see that here. I think.
While this definitely looks cool, as someone who is schooled in the art of traditional hand drawn animation I have to say I definitely prefer the original 12-24 fps. Animation looses a little bit of life when it's smoothed out for 60 fps. Same can be said when they lessen frames for cost-effectiveness in stuff like filmation cartoons. Not to mention the awful stutters and glitches the AI makes. Honestly 24 fps by a human is the way to go. Just watch Roger Rabbits animation quality and you can see what I mean. Anyway that's my long boring comment. I'm gonna go back to drawing the same picture a million times over.
@Korin Tower I think you're being a little harsh this is just TH-cam. If you're such a purist you should just watch everything on 35mm celluloid film stock and write your comments to the editor of your local newspaper.
I agree with you except for the part when you said it looks cool. I think frame interpolation and other AI animation or whatever just looks bad and janky. There was a scene from the DBS Broly movie that someone used frame interpolation to stretch the animation to 60 fps from the standard 24 fps, and man it was the most jarring, disgusting video I've ever seen in terms of animation quality. Don't get me wrong, 60 fps does technically look better than 24 fps, but only when it's naturally drawn and animated that way. Hand drawn and animated will always be superior to any AI upscale technique
This is actually closer to how the cells were originally colored. While the Sega CD version has the darker colors, but a lower frame rate and missing scenes, the other versions have the full FMV, but the colors are a bit washed out.
Ah yes, my addiction for the past few months. Unnecessarily upscaling crap into 4k and/or 60fps. There's just something addicting about it despite not coming out great sometimes. I remember upscaling the commercials found in Sonic Jam, alongside two variations of the Honey Nut Cheerios x Sonic commercial and it took a month to finish.
My amateur animator's eyeballs picked up some timing issues in the inbetweens added to bump it up to 60fps. Too smooth in some places, too jittery in others. Also I can see some really gnarly compression artifacts when Sonic curled up to hit the ramp rolling at the end.
ngl, i dont think this intro needs any sort of 4k 60fps treatment, its animated on like 12-24 fps so it can look snappy and convey sonics speed and the way the environments are drawn, you cant really make it 4k
Fuck AI learning and all that. The OG version is still the best. Hand crafted, hand made. Edit : That may be overly harsh haha, it's cool you spent time trying stays. There is a 720p version on TH-cam that is perfect though.
It would be better if somebody did in-betweens rather than interpolating the footage. And yes i know that in-betweens take a lot of time but that's generally the point.
The backgrounds do look better almost like it was remastered from the original negatives...but the 60 FPS removes some of the charm of 2D animation-there is this special kind of movement that comes from 24 FPS from a piece of 2D animation (especially here where it’s meant to replicate an old 80s anime-in which the OVA tried to replicate this in the same way) just can’t be replaced-its cool seeing it in 60 FPS though. BUT WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THE COLOR OF SONIC IN THIS CUTSCENE! He was a slightly desaturated light blue-now it’s a darker blue and with his saturation brought up! Hell the colors even look too clean like somebody colored over him again instead of just remastering what’s there- like they tried to fix something that didn’t need fixing- I don’t know what happened there but that’s the deal breaker why this isn’t the definitive way to watch this for me. Seriously it reminds me of those times when people redo a practical effect with a CGI one-even if the practical effect isn’t great-it has a charm that can never be replicated-and the way Sonics colors weren’t quite what they were in the games or in later animations gave this cutscene a unique look that shouldn’t be messed with.
dude this isnt 60 FPS, without ruining it. most old anime like stuff like pokemon intentionally doesnt have high fps for a reason it makes it look nicer. and not to mention this stuff was not built for ai upscaling cause you can tell if you pause on some frames everything just morphs into a mess
What do I mean? Well the backgrounds are more detailed almost like it’s the original negatives...but the color on sonic got completely changed which ruins the look of the original cutscene making it look too clean and making sonic more dark blue and saturating him too much
