I use rinseless washes most of the time with the occasional full monty. The reason, though, is my particular circumstances. I'm old and I do a low mileage - about 50 miles a week. Using rinseless is kinder on the ageing skeleton and also my car is never that dirty. A weekly rinseless keeps the car looking fresh, is easy to do and, if you are careful, doesn't scratch. Good video - look forward to the comparisons in the rinseless shoot out!

Rinseless washing has been a game changer for me, mainly in the garage. I use one which has surfactants in it. However it doesn't get in the cracks or the wheels and wheel wells all that well, and it needs help with road film, so it can't replace my pressure washer. But I really like how it doesn't cause water drips for hours out of the mirrors, trunk, and grilles...

Rinseless and waterless wash are two very different products. You’re using rinseless wash in this video from what I can tell. Waterless wash is in a spray bottle and you wipe it off with a microfiber. Waterless washing is great for small jobs, door jams, bugs on the hood, etc. but I would never use waterless wash to do an entire vehicle because it would cost too much. For rinseless washing give Dyi detail v2 rinseless wash a try. It’s the best one I have used for cleaning power.

I use rinseless in winter when i have no real access to a hose, i usually pre rinse at a pay and spray to get salt and sand off, then do a rinseless wash at home and dry with my towel. Our state uses tons of salt on the roads, so it's important for me to keep the salt from eating my poor rocker panrls even more!

I've got a little 10l bucket set up all the time ready to go with some brushes, a sponge, a bottle of wheel cleaner, some rinseless concentrate and a pump sprayer. This is my grab and go quick clean setup. For car shows I can easily just throw it in the boot and give the car a wash down when I get there. In an ideal world I will find a petrol station jet wash to give it a quick blast first.

I like it for a quick detail at work in the car yard. Cars get washed 3 times a week to keep them in a presentable state.
If I know a customer is coming in for a test drive, will give a quick touch up, to get it looking the best it can without grabbing all the gear out the shed. 2 mins and it’s there.
With over 30 cars to take care of daily, if you’re washing them all, it’s time consuming and labour intensive. Some days just a moist microfibre is enough to remove the fallout. Yards on a main road with 50000 passing vehicles a day so dust, fumes and road grime mist if it rains plus a bird that’s attracted to the shiny cars.

Rinsless is king. Since i live in an apartament and have a communal garage (and some whining stupid neighbours who don't like anything - even air moving around) i have water and electricty in there so i can do all my detailing work except a full jet wash (if i wanted to i could but again, i don't want any whining from the neighbours as they suck - any contact with them just is painfull xD). I do ninja washing, go at night and do a rinsless, it takes me over 40 min with wheels and crevices (they are key in rinsless to not overlook dirt hidden there) then i dry and voila! I have the cleanest car around. Man ppl need to stop hating on that method, it's just another washing method, chill people and find something else to stress about. Also the newer rinsless like DIY Rinsless in my opinion do shift grease a little as i use it around the house especially in the kitchen on the countertops and it cleans good. I used ONR and Mckeys but they don't clean nearly as good as the newer ones and streak a lot wich i hate. Once a month or two even i do a normal full eq wash at my mothers house with all the bells and whistles, i found that this regime keeps me invested into detailing and not burning to fast, i like the whole art of it, but man it's sometimes SUPER hard work and you can loose interest and will to do it if you want a weekly wash, Rinsless saved me as my cars are well kept and kept the detailing bug alive. I love it and will never let it go. Never.

When I use ONR, I use Bilt Hamber touchless in a pump sprayer before hand and a wheel cleaner, then rinse with a hose. Then I use a battery powered sprayer with the pick up put in the rinseless bucket solution and spray over the car before going over it with the rinseless wash with a Rag Company ultra soft sponge, seems a to be a safe way for me on a black car. No matter what kind of wash i do though my soft black honda paint swirls anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks Jon. Always a topic that divides opinion. I only use rinseless wash products for the contact wash as I feel they are safer than traditional shampoo and water at the drying stage. I think it’s always a case of choosing your pre wash based on how dirty the car is. It may be a spray of the rinseless at the usual dilution, it may be a pressure washer and snow foam. I base my decision on the wheels. If they need a full clean then the pressure washer should be coming out.

I try to give my rinseless wash (ADS Hero) maximum amount of chances of cleaning. I've got a Marolex pump sprayer (way less pumps for more output- very efficient). Soak out all the panels and let it dwell to really give the product a chance but not let it dry. There are some amazing new rinseless products out in the last 2 to 3 months, Yvan Lacros mentioned that there are some more advanced surfactants our that play better with the other ingredients and do a better job in their newest iteration of DIY Detail rinseless wash. Rinseless washing is soo cheap to use 4ml to a litre, that it's gives your other products a break, saving you money in turn. I pressure wash once a month, depending on dirt levels. But use common sense. The newer rinseless washes will clean your wash media without having the need to rub it against the grit guard in your bucket. Also leaving a nice slickness level behind is good to have also. I also use Labocosmetica Idrosave for the protection it leaves behind and the slickness is unparalleled. DIY Detail version 2 uses these newer surfactants and ingredients, hence why I asked Yvan to send you a bottle John to try. Hopefully you've got it? 👍

I typically use what is now starting to be called a "hybrid wash" method. BH Touch-Less or a citrus prewash (when required) followed by foaming on whatever slightly active car shampoo I have handy, then pressure wash that off. Then I quickly apply a presoak of rinseless wash with another foam cannon (most of them don't foam but that doesn't really matter...this just gets it on the surface quickly). After that I pull my car back into the garage to do a rinseless contact wash to knock off that final bit of traffic film that the prewash didn't take care of.
I have a few reasons for doing it this way.
    1. I have extremely hard water and full southern exposure in my driveway. Using this method gives me plenty of time to do a thorough and relaxing wash without having to worry about water spots.
    2. I live in Minnesota (northern United States) where it is too cold to bucket wash outside for at least 6 months of the year. I do however have a hot water supply to my pressure washer in my heated garage. Combined with the southern exposure in my driveway, I can usually do the prewash outside in the driveway as long as it is above 10F (about -12C) and the sun is shining...without creating a skating rink. If its colder than that, I can pressure wash inside my garage...I just prefer to not make it that humid in there.
Using this method lets me work in a non-rushed and comfortable manner, and I have never gotten any scratching or marring. Of course if the car is just lightly dusty, I just soak it down with rinseless and then get to washing.

So I have a pressure washer, a hose, and a foam canon. But I always go back to rinse-less washing. It’s such a time saver and effective. If a car is too dirty, or muddy I bring out the pressure washer, and then follow up my contact wash with rinse-less. Rinse-less is superior compared to waterless in my opinion. They are not the same thing. You can still rinse the car beforehand! People dont understand this.

I hear ‘lubrication’ a lot in detailing videos and marketing but know a little bit about how lubrication works, I don’t believe the ‘slimy’ feel you get between your fingers means anything and don’t believe you can lubricate a point load a bit of grit or sand… it would be interesting to here what a tribologist would say John. I think there’s a misunderstanding in using this product. It’s not a waterless product.
A better way to understand it is less rinsing, instead of no rinsing. You can still use a pressure washer before. Especially in the winter.
A good method is to pre soak the entire car with the diluted solution using a pump sprayer.
This stuff can even dry on your car with no problem. It will reactivate as soon as it gets wet or in contact with a damp towel.
After pre soaking you can rinse it off with a pressure washer if you’d like. It will help “detach” the dirt from the car. Or just start your contact wash with it.
You can even add it to your traditional two buckets method in the rinse bucket. It will help encapsulate the dirt from your microfiber towels and rinse them better.

Nice vid John, it's interesting that yes rinseless wash has it plus/ minus.
I don't have the time or energy to wash my car and does need it but has done for 6+ months, life gets in the way so a rinseless wash would be be a quicker alt to getting everything out setting it all up, clearing a day in the calendar making sure the weather is forgiving etc etc...
But does using using a pressure washer do harm that you don't see more than good. Getting water in to the nooks and crevices that you can't get dry that could cause rust over a long time? This would be only really be a problem if you wash every week with a pressure washer every time.... is too clean a good or bad thing

Jon, apologies if you've answered this before but what are your thoughts on spray vs foam applications? By that I mean, I seem to get better results with BH TL as my pre-wash when I use it through a pump sprayer rather than applying it through a lance like a traditional snow foam. This extends to when I'm using products on wheels too, i.e. applying via a trigger sprayer rather than a IK foamer. It could make for an interesting video topic for you, because surely 'foam' is just the product in air bubbles? that's all foam is, so less of the product is actually making contact with the surface? (on a microscopic level I mean) Where as a spray is the liquid applied to the surface? I think the industry adopted 'snow foam' 20 years ago and just stuck with it

For loose dirt & dust though, I find that water works pretty well, and I'd be very interested if anyone had the time to do a long term comparison - e.g - use water on one half of the car, and a waterless/rinseless solution on the other. See if there's much of a difference in effort required, and the amount of marring, over time.

You should view it a less rinsing, not no rinsing.
If you use it as it should, it’s safer than a normal shampoo wash.

My friend, I will answer your question. I almost exclusively use rinse less.
For bird bombs the best solution is a rinseless solution diluted 16:1 (16 parts of water, 1 part of rinseless).
You spray the area and put a paper towel on top and wet it. Let it soak for about 5 minutes. The paper has to be wet, covering the affected area.
Then you remove the paper, spray some more and clean it with a rinseless dampend towel.
      16:1 is quick detailed dilution
      256:1 is normal cleaning dilution

Stopped using ONR on it's own, dirt just gets moved around and left on the paint. The finish is poor and for an extra 30 minutes of my time I can clean the car far better than one noodle moved around in the same dirty water. I do add it to shampoos randomly and it also works decently on upvc.

Me personally, i just thoroughly clean, then ceramic coat/spray ceramic wax a car, then rinse it well. When it gets dirty, wash with car shampoo/dash of dish soap if its filthy. Nothing really fancy. Then blow dry and use ceramic detailer.
Ideally a high end show car would be ppf and then ppf ceramic coated to reduce work.
For non ppf cars, just reduce touching and scratching. Coat well, then rinse mostly. Once filthy, wash thoroughly and reapply hydrophobic ceramics/polymers.
Tldr Waterless wash seems like a scam. Rinsing with plain water and then drying does just as much with less scratching!

Honesty is good, but a few minutes of spraying with a NON PRESSURE WASHER, would get rid of more dirt. As someone who has been detailing cars for over 30 years, i hate when i see anyone using a pressure washer. They do not do anything but cause seal blowby. Why use a pressure washer when a normal hose end sprayer works just as well without seal blowby? If your car is coated a PRESSURE WASHER is a detriment, not a benefit, since it removes wax, ceramic, and BLOWS BY SEALS, without cleaning any better than normal loose hose ends. Cars have soft rubber seals and for decades i've wondered why people would ever use a pressure washer on a car. Unless from a distance, which accomplishes the same thing as a normal nozzle/hose end valve.
