I think, alcohol is too normalized in some places/countries. What's really miserable is to see jobless alcoholics linger in the streets or to lose a loved one to a drunk driving incident, etc. I'm not on board with Erdogan giving religious ideology as justification for his hard stance. But I think, considering the negative effects excessive alcohol consumption can have on people's lives and on society as a whole, maybe a harder stance against alcohol and tobacco might not be an intrinsically bad idea.

Still, it seems like half of Turkey is living in European, so it's not irrelevant for Europeans, in which direction Turkey is changing. Turkey is militarily a very strategically important located country and has so far acted as a buffer to the more dangerous muslim countries and Europe. It's very concerning for all of Europe, that Erdogan prefers an Iranian like state rather than a modern secular democracy. Turkey is moving further away from Europe and closer to Iran every day. That's why we follow Turkey closely!
