I'm slightly doubtful that US has one identity. Being on several states, I believe that's more a outcome of brilliant cultural marketing than anything else. On the ground, that's not exactly the case.
The U.S. has only one identity? First I’ve heard of that, and I’m American. Personally, I think there’s at least a 40% chance that America ends this decade as three separate countries.
America innovates China replicates Europe regulates Europe needs to seriously trim its bureaucracy. Nothing stifles growth and innovation like excessive bureaucracy and regulations.
The 2008 finance crisis happened because of lack of regulation. Maybe you benefitted from the crisis, but millions didn't. Europe represents a more humane governance while in the US it is just survival of the fittest.

Globalization is not dying, this is just a pullback, which will certainly bring some dose of realism to the ideals of total opennes that prevailed in the early 2000's.
Globalisation was always flawed. the system was designed to make a very few billionaires even richer. These individuals do not have any national loyalties. They make their money by taking a cut from global trade. Manufacturing in poor countries, with poor environmental regulation, and selling to the rich countries. This moves wealth around the world.

@@xoagig That's where you're mistaken. US already won the cold war, it no longer wants to play world police. It's asking everybody to bolster their own defense spending. It's becoming more isolationist, more populist.
@@pugilist102 The vast majority of Americans do not give a damn about policing the world. The hawkist foreign policies are dictated by a small group of politicians and they are increasingly unpopular.
NGL, the EU should decouple dependency on ANY other major power. We NEED our own sovereignty, we NEED to be more united with each other, we NEED a common defense policy and military (we're not enemies, a unified defence force would be more effective and efficient, reducing cost while increasing power) , and above all we NEED technological sovereignty and even leadership in key industries: we need our own effective aerospace technology, quantum computing, semiconductor technology, AI and robotics. As for leadership we absolutely MUST become the global leaders in next gen medical technology, specifically regenerative medicine, bionics, gene therapy and stem cell treatments. If we don't we will be granting dependency of our healthcare systems to entities abroad that will cause them to crash, especially if an outside fore has access to serious breakthrougs like anti-aging cures, disabillity solutions or cures for autoimmune diseases.
But culturally European countries are conformist society’s where new ideas are pushed down and eventually out. People bring their ideas to the US because in the US if you have a good idea they say “ok go for it”.
@@-Nobody-1 Is the Us like that though? don't get me wrong, it once was like that: an ambitious country willing to put massive funds into long term and wildly risky R&D megaprojects that gave us modern aerospace tech and semiconductors. But the moment the cold war ended it stopped that practice. All of it's funds have been squeezed into immediate gains, resulting into the "this meeting could have been an Email" syndrome that is now plaguing it. It is why china has caught up to the Us despite it initially having a 30 year lead in the 90's that had it continued to push after the fall of hte USSR it would have early bionics and anti-aging products in the market already. And it's showing no signs of wanting to return to that model becuase it's current trajectory makes a lot of money for the few who basically own it. The EU, for all this time, remained dormant, counting that it did not have to push on its own and let the US take risks. This has to change ASAP. the good news is the EU, for all of its flaws, has a more robust public spending mindset than the US that still understands long term planning and also has some benefits due to its unique nature. Namely it has pockets where you'd need no major legal changes to perform R&D in stem cells. For example such research is legal in Greece, the EU could Set up shop and do a biotech "Appollo program" where it uses those more permissible members as the springboard to fast track major advancements. Keep in mind, cracking the cure for aging can reduce healthcare costs by more than 60% (because the real disease is aging behind many of the problems we're treating) and solve the demographic crisis in one shot. Not to mention that such technologies would rake in trillions for the EU. And that's just when talking about basic anti-aging and restoraation bionics. This quickly will snowball into augmentation, cosmetics and other technologies. In short a leadership in this field is the ultimate soft power and economic move we could do.
Europe is in reality a bunch of competitive nations who have fought wars for dominance of the various nationalities. France, Germany and UK feel they ought to lead and they will not accept leadership of the other.
Also part of the reason US Companies are valued more than the EU companies is to do with tax free investments in the USA like the 401k And other tax efficient investment methods. This needs to change in EU countries. Especially due to the insane property prices in some EU countries like Ireland .
US stocks are mostly pulled forward by FAMG. Technology monopolies... Sorry, but the American economic system is definitely not worthy of emulation... 0.2% of the people own 1/3 of everything. 9.8% of the people own the second 1/3 and the last third is owned by 90% of the people. And it keeps getting worse to the detriment of the 90% working majority. The corrupt, excuse me lobbied government only works for the corporations. Ordinary people are often one paycheck away from losing the roof over their heads. Just a little thing like a broken leg is enough...Young people have no chance to buy their own home even if they have 2-3 jobs, because the price of real estate has skyrocketed in recent years. These young people are worse off than their parents for the first time in history. Despite all the technology and automation. The system in America is sick and I don't want the EU to be the same.
The whole world is sinking. All dogmatic fanaticism lead to collapse. It will not be different with capitalism. The problem is that this time its a global fanaticism not a local fanaticism.
Trump would be more than happy to shut all US bases in Europe. Then he'd give a wink and a nod to Putin and say, "do what you want". And, for good measure, he'd put 100% tariffs on all European exports, just to twist the knife.
Soooo blaming Trump is a part of the problem..hmm how about the EU focuses on protecting their own country and start putting in an effort rather than continuing to depend on the US. Americans are tired of foreign countries not playing their part and some of these trade policies are ridiculous. Step up and protect your country rather than worrying about upsetting peoples feelings.

The problem is it compounds one successful highly valuable innovation leads to more capital investment in more ways to improve the value of that capital investment or it springs out into new investments in new highly profitable ventures and hard to replicate technology and products. That’s where the true high value creation is and European Economies falling clearly behind in these important sectors, industry’s and markets

I don't think so, but as an American I hope so. The world needs a prosperous Democratic Europe. Unfortunately, decades of bad policy is coming to home to roost.
@@account-369 Europe has been a bastion of democratic, economic and political stability for decades. This has helped to facilitate our current “liberal order”. Meaning global capital trade, specialized education, free exchange of ideas and rule of law. This, along with international organizations has resulted the explosion of civil liberties and economic prosperity around the world in last few decades. If Europe were to collapse politically and or economically, this current order could be upended. Disrupting global supply chains, military alliances, and threaten civil liberties. The vacuum left behind could be filled by ill-liberal interests, and a global economic and military conflict could spark to gain control. The current way the world is organized is predicated on inter-country dependence using international law to facilitate this. This way, countries and organizations have a economic interest in the success of other countries and organizations. Rather than how things used to be where countries fought bloody wars for territory and resources. If Europe’s influence in the current international economic-political system decreases/evaporates, then the current system, along with the period of relative stability, could be end. So basically “the world needs a prosperous democratic Europe” if you believe in basic liberalism. That being, political democracy, a free market economy, civil liberties and the rule of law.
Focus on innovation, less welfare, deregulation, and smart energy policies for indipendence(nuclear base with 70% renewables). It also takes a change in culture cause Europe lacks private venture capital availability.
It’s easy to just say focus on innovation, but for the EU government that is an elusive goal. Hard concrete action could be requirement for EU countries to start on the digitalization of government services. That will speed up the bureaucracy and help companies become more effective, efficient and by extension more competitive because they have more time to spend on innovation and business growth.
The European Union will only thrive if Europeans are prioritized instead of being disenfranchised and demoralized meanwhile outsiders are given immense benefits paid for by Europeans. And if that doesn't happen, buckle your seatbelts.
The Big boss is complaining that Europeans don't buy U.S. cars. Hasn't it occurred to him, being a businessman, that the problem lies in the product itself?
Trade is as much about politics as it is about products. The logic often goes: if we buy goods worth 10 units from you, we expect you to buy goods worth 15 units from us in return. This reciprocity shapes trade negotiations, and currently, the U.S. holds a stronger negotiating position over the EU.

They are correct about the internal market. It does'nt really exist. For instance: in my country, The Netherlands, many products are heavily taxed. So much so that almost a third of the country goes to Germany or Belgium to fill up their cars, buy cigarettes, furniture, medicine and cheaper foodstuffs. So, we have an internal market in the sense that we can travel without problems across the border. There are many royal family members in Europe. Should they be responsible for funding the collapse of their people's finances and suffering in their lands ?
Democracy, true freedom and peace are our biggest strength. Europe has endured many wars, pandemics and natural desasters. Still it has remained an isle of stability in the world. We need to remain calm, believe in ourselfs and our common values, so wr will endure again. Europe is more resiliant than any autocratic maniac regime attempting to accomplish world dominance. Such systems are inherrently unstable, because people will never want to live there.
The graphs are wrong..as they say, lies lies and statistics. EU shouldn’t try to copy USA or beat her at her own game. There are numerous significant values that are human values and not reflected in the traditional numbers like gdp, that EU has that are way above USA’s. Those values are the source of competitive advantage for EU. Don’t imitate, innovate.
It's not populism and it's not 'political instability'. It's democracy: people are rejecting the EU and it's barrage of costs and regulations, they're exhausted and impoverished, and now I'm hearing talk of appropriating private savings?
This may be unpopular. We need to cut ties (or bonds, to be more accurate) with the USA and reconcile with Russia and start some serious cooperation with them to rebuild our economies and rebuild to be industrial powerhouse that we were (Russia included) 100 years ago.
It is actually quite obvious that Europe needs to have its own sovereignty in media channels and social media. Where is our own indigenous Meta, X, Alphabet (Google n etc) , Microsoft, or US-funded MSM? Just never forget that "he who pays the piper, calls the tune". Make sure that DW, BBC, et al, are fully sovereign; by making sure they are Europe entities which are fully funded by true Europeans (not dual citizens).
Europe should have its own companies providing some of those services. Owned and operated mostly by Europeans. Yes you can buy shares of Alphabet or Meta and be entitled to some of the profit but its not just about the profit. Its also about the revenue which is distributed among its management, emoployees and contractors which are mostly US citizens and companies. And all very well paid. Many of those companies do not have any technology that we could not replicate. They only have market share because they were first. And to those that say that if EU does some hard steps on that front then US will retaliate and ban export of german cars or french wine or whatever. They can not because its a digital product versus physical product. They can not all of a sudden make millions of cars or bottles of wine just by installing a new server.
By all means ----get cracking on that! Of course, you have been spending all available European money for investment on global warming delusions instead... Are you willing to give that up? And aren't government regulators going to swot such upstarts down before they become an actual challenge to bureaucratic power?
I hate to say it but US corporations have evicerated income streams which paid taxes such as newspapers, advertising and rent. These are not problems for China which nurtured its own copies. US tariffs are a opportunity to equally block these tech giants in favour of locally grown corporations.
THAT NO ONE, literally no single person in the commenta address the giant elephant in the room is staggering: the frickin war on behalf of USA with your most important strategic trading partner: Russia. This unnecessary war will divide the Europeans and it is helping the USA getting rid of it's most potent competitor the EU in the western hemisphere and be the only denominator of western position. Too bad that while doing that, and losing at it, Russia got closer to China and both become extremly competitive.
Of course we need to take care of economic health, but competitive capitalism does not necessarily take care of social issues. USA is a prime example of this even if they’re the country with the nicest numbers, a large portion of its population can barely afford rent and food while working a full time job. Not saying we should go full communist, but when economist are saying we should be investing more in big companies, we should listen, but with caution. Yes we need to create jobs and increasingly need to be self sufficient as the world closes up. But we don’t have to be the richest in the world, to me, this is not the fundamental value in europe. Rather to have free education, good welfare systems, healthy democracies (more of an ambition at this point), peace, relative economic equality (at least in parts of europe) and so on…

In reality, the US would prefer a thriving Europe.

I don't think so, but as an American I hope so. The world needs a prosperous Democratic Europe. Unfortunately, decades of bad policy is coming to home to roost.

why the world needs prosperous democratic europe? can you elaborate?

That's not freedom. Making society owned by a few private players, like the US or Argentina are, is an oligarchy, a kind of autocracy. It leads to the opposite of freedom.
Europe is a total bureaucratic joke. Anybody incorporating or investing there is wasting time and ressources.

UK was the second biggest economy in the EU. Brexit probably also contributed somewhat to the decline of the EU economy, which although UK was never in the Schengen area, would be reflected in the euro.
I dont think EU ever bothered to ponder why the UK chose to leave. Instead, they started cancelling the UK.
😂😂
Brexit was the beginning!!
"You gotta pay your bills". That coming from someone who uses insolvency laws to get away with not paying his debts. And people clap. That's the level of intelligence of a Trump supporter.
Finally someone in their right mind😮🎉
Do remember that America needs Europe more than the other way round
It's a bit nuanced. They depend on each other in many ways for example trade, investment, innovation. As far as security of course the US has the military that can assure security against the likes of China and Russia so I would be cautious to say one needs the other more then visa versa.
It does not look good. Mr Donohoe makes good arguments, but if the EU enforces more rapid and dramatic change and integration on the member states that will only result in more brexits.
We are falling behind in modern markets. Our strengths in machinery, cars, aircraft, high end engineering and so on are now more easily done by others. De-industrialisation is now understood as a bad thing but we are collectively incapable of change.
It might be time to admit the EU should be trade and not much else. Its' that of federalism, and the populace won't accept that. Some states will fail, some will succeed.
BS. The only lithography equipment needed by all semi-conductor companies in the world is developed as result of the cooperation of EU industries lead by the Dutch ASML. Each machine costs 300 million and the new generation will cost ~500 million. There is no country in the world, who can beat this Dutch lead EU development. US; South Korean and Taiwanese companies beg to get the first new machines, to produce 1 nm semi conductors.
You can’t expect the same leaders that got you into the financial crisis you face to get you out from under the crisis they created. Being innovatory constipated is stifling growth. Fresh ideas and faces are needed.
Well if EU wants to hug socialism then yep, bye ....

It feels like I have been listening to the same kind of stories for decades now. Any economic problem is a crisis, and we are all going to starve on the streets in the near future.
And any economic wind fall is a boom or a growth miracle.

The EU is done. Join the Belt and Road and get some stuff done.
Just to let you know some countries already part of it.
But if you live near the border, you're living costs are lower compaired to living in Amsterdam, Rotterdam etc.
This disgruntles many people but our government does'nt listen. They broke their own promises they made before the elections.
EU will unfortunately sink itself...and maybe blame Trump for it. Or whoever conveniant at the time
Europe without unity cannot survive 😊
Europe is doomed. This outlook should've been acted upon 10 years ago.
Having said that if EU unites further and invests heavily in tertiary Education/innovation, so That it would end up having copy cats of Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Waymo(robotaxis), OpenAI(llms), Intel(Semiconductor design and manufacturing) in European ground (essential for independence) (funnily enough Europeans contribute almost nothing to the aforementioned high-tech, high-paying sectors) like the Chinese have, it might have a chance at being competitive in the Future.
(I don't see it happening but I might be a pessimist)
The fact that you have ASML alone negates "almost not contributing", you wouldn't have advanced semiconductors if it wasn't for it
@@SimonTmtein some way he is right ,you are currently using a US social media platform right now which it is youtube, when you search anything online you are using Google which it is an US company ,when you use a laptop you are either using an American or Asian laptop or PC ,if you are using window for your PC or laptop you are using an American OS, and if you are using a MacBook you are using an American company device ,your phone is also American or Asian ,all your social media’s are American or Asian ,Europe is heavily dependent on the US specifically and the fact that you don’t realise is baffling .
The current generation in Europe is paying the bills for the previous generation. Good life cannot last more than 3 generations.
It's not the EU that is 35 trillions in debt, it's the USA.
The value of the € doesn't depend on being the international trade currency, the USD does.
We are all doomed, nothing matters. It will all end in tears pretty soon.
The more I hear the "experts" the more I want the EU to end. Remove the obligatory lead recycling law from circuit board producers in EU and you'll see innovation. You've got the law so that you'll protect from internal European competition 5-6 fossils of companies like Phillips that produces almost everything in China.
It's the other way round. The US has more investment because the ECB is having policies that sends our money to the US. It's the inability to save and to gain proper interests that makes the investment flight out of Europe not the other way round. You basically ask that we should strip the savings out of Europeans so that we can fund "innovation" of few oligarchs.
Bring UK back into the single market & secure a defence pact, invite Canada to join the single market, bring Iceland & Norway into the EU, bring Greenland back into the EU (& maybe guide them into independence), secure trade deals with India & China, leave the US where it is.

make Europe great again. MEGA!
Here in Canada we're looking for a better dance partner than the US. Maybe we can come together with a new economic union?
No you aren’t. Stay quiet
European Union is a great thing. Unfortunately, the Union has 27 countries with different mindsets, different languages, and different histories...
Don't like Trump , but its what Europe needs to wake up
It's not populism and it's not 'political instability'.
Call it Pravda and ban and arrest commenters and dissent and discussion. Wow great plan!
Of course EU could survive, if EU is not under the skirts of US.

Too bad that while doing that, and losing at it, Russia got closer to China and both become extremly competitive.
The EU should join the United States and become the 52nd state.

No. Very bad idea.
Rather to have free education, good welfare systems, healthy democracies (more of an ambition at this point), peace, relative economic equality (at least in parts of europe) and so on…
The problem is not in us, is with the ones that don't want the same as us, or simply don't want us to strive! I think you know who I am talking about here, in both ways...
