  • Grateful Greyhounds hosted its annual Fall Ball fundraiser at Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon, NY. Proceeds went to helping ex-racing greyhounds with broken bones, medical expenses and elder dog care. The highlight of the day was the adoption process, as 26 ex-racers, fresh off of the track, arrived in a dog hauler ready to find forever homes.

    What a great event. So lovely to see people come to adopt a greyhound. It's done completely different in Britain. I have a rescue greyhound lurcher. He is adorable. So easy going and a couch potato!

      +Barbra Depierro Very loving dogs. Always looking for warm places to tuck their snouts into :) For those who love a gentle, affectionate dog, these are among the very best.

    I live in the mid-west of the United States and owned a Whippet, which is the same type of dog as a Greyhound (Greyhounds are large, Whippets are mid-sized, Italian Greyhounds are small). I have also owned a number of breeds of other dogs and the Whippet really stole my heart, he was the sweetest dog. I have either met or spoken to other owners and they all say the same thing, this breed is very gentle and loving. People tend to think this breed only race around but that is actually not the case. Give these dogs a little running around time daily and they want to be a couch potato since they are sprinters NOT long distance runners.
    I do suggest getting a winter coat for this breed since they don't have an under coat. The good part of this is these dogs don't tend to smell and don't need trimming as most dogs but the bad part is they get cold easy.

      I had a Whippet he just recently passed away and I am now going to rescue a Greyhound. My Whippet stole my heart too and I miss him everyday. They're all really good dogs.

    What a wonderful organization you are. I’m glad Florida voted to do away with this nonsense (Greyhound Racing) in the recent midterm elections. No animal should be exploited for human entertainment or gambling purposes. They’ve got the most loving faces!

    • @momtoty
      @momtoty ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @timslater566 If it wasn't for racing, there would be no retire racers to adopt. Greyhounds aren't exploited. They are doing what they want to do, race. The only ones exploiting greyhounds are the anti-racing activist groups that use them for their donations for their lavish vacations by telling many lies about how they are treated, ect. There is nothing wrong with racing. The greyhounds love it or they wouldn't do it. They get the best care and love from their handler. They MUST be 100% healthy to be able to race or they are pulled from the race. The worst thing FL did was to approve amendment 13 to close all tracks. The people of FL were duped by the activists in believing the lies. In other words, the people from FL were very stupid. Now with only 2 remaining tracks open in the USA, there is a big shortage of retired racers and a big waiting list at the adoption groups of people waiting to adopt a greyhound. Many groups are getting greyhounds from IR and the UK to fill the demand. Some groups are even getting Galgos and Podencos from Spain for people to adopt.

      @@momtoty …..thanks so much for explaining this. I wasn’t aware that they were being treated well by the owners. I will agree with you about the people of Florida ‘being stupid’. That’s why, when I retire the end of this year, I’m relocating out west. Maybe one day I’ll have a Greyhound of my own. 😁

    Isn't this unusual to take a do directly from the track to be adopted? Other places take them to the vet first then to be groomed and often to a foster family before they are put up for adoption.

      After the Fall Ball, they are taken to the vet and all their shots are updated and they are fixed. When you adopt a hound, they are up-to-date on everything. My husband and I have adopted two racing greyhounds who have since passed, and we recently adopted two galgos, who are just lovely. Lisa Sallie of Grateful Greyhounds does wonderful work.
